Re-Imagining Corporate
Wellness for Virtual Teams:
Work from Home, Play Together
The first luncheon of the 2021 new year was kicked off with an
interactive Young Professional Luncheon, featuring Dr. Jacob
Weiss! He started and ended the luncheon by showing off his
talent, starting with playing bells and ending with juggling
lighted bowling pins!
Dr. Weiss describes laughter as the shortest distance between
two people and he had the attendees laughing a lot throughout
this luncheon. He used multiple backgrounds, music,
energy, and activities to be interactive through this virtual
event. He normally would be in-person teaching all kinds of
groups about how to incorporate corporate wellness into their
day to day. Just like everyone else, he has adjusted to virtually
teaching through this pandemic. To do so, he requested that
we each bring two socks to the luncheon.

Recapping last month’s Luncheon with Dr. Jacob Weiss
Wellness is not something that you just get, it
something that you get better at and it takes time
to add or change your lifestyle, something you
have to practice at. For example, the juggling we
all did, we may not have all been great at it, but
that's the point! When the ball drops, let it, it is
part of the learning process. Don't be negative
when you can't do something right away, pick the
ball back up and keep going, continue to practice
it. It is key to your corporate wellness to be able
to catch yourself and stop yourself from thinking
negatively and start asking yourself if you have
practiced or could learn to do it another way
instead.
Dr. Jacob Weiss left us with the reminder to
incorporate laughter and play into our everyday
practice. It is a great brain break! It is also helpful
because you will then carry that
energy forward the rest of your
day which will improve your
overall wellness, company
wellness, and organizational
wellness!
“Going local does not mean walling off the outside world. It means nurturing locally owned businesses
that use local resources sustainably, employs local workers at decent wages, and serve primarily local
consumers. It means becoming more self-sufficient and less dependent on imports. Control moves from
the boardrooms of distant corporations and back into the community where it belongs.” – Michael H.
Shuman, author of the book Going Local.
Rekindling An Old Fla
or Lighting A New One.
As young professionals working to advance their
careers while juggling the joys of homeownership and
trying to keep family first, free time is hard to come by.
In the event you do find yourself with some free time,
there may be obstacles (i.e. global pandemics) preventing
you from spending it on activities you enjoy.
I wish I could blame Covid-19 on the fact that I have not
kept up with my hobbies of the past, which include
tennis, running and cycling. The truth is other priorities
(family as the primary) came to the forefront and I
experienced a little burnout. As a result, I was happy to
let these hobbies phase out of my life.
However, I recently had a conversation with a colleague
the other day and was asked what I do for fun outside of
work. I’m sure many of you have been asked this same
question. I found myself answering with these long lost
hobbies of mine, even though it has been years since I
participated in them.
I’ve recently convinced myself that making time for
these hobbies doesn’t have to come at the expense of
family or work. I can play tennis with a customer or
co-worker. I can go to the driving range with the family. I
can strap in the little ones for a bike ride or run. Combining
activities that I enjoy with family and work time is
one of my resolutions for 2021. In addition, I am trying
to be more willing to explore new activities and hobbies.
If Covid-19 has taught us anything, it is that the lines
between personal and work life are more blurry than
ever…so we might as well embrace it.
