BEQUIA SUNSHINE SCHOOL AUCTION
With regret, due to COVID19, we announce the postponement
of the 2021 Sunshine School Annual Auction.
The Auction is essential for raising the bulk of our annual
operating funds each year and without the income from it,
the school’s financial position will be in a worrying situation.
We are therefore appealing to all of our very generous supporters
who over the years have bid at and/or donated items to the auction,
to continue to show their valued support for the school
by considering making a cash donation.
If you would like to donate, even a small amount
will be of great help, please do so via the following options:
Visit the Donations Page on the Action Bequia website
and specify donation to the Sunshine School in the drop-down box.
https://www.actionbequia.org/donatetoothernow.php
OR
Send a cheque in any currency to the Sunshine School
PO BOX 90 BQ, Bequia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Kind regards on behalf of The Sunshine School
STRENGTHENING OF THE ENFORCEMENT OF PUBLIC
HEALTH MEASURES
St. Vincent and the Grenadines on February 4, 2021 reported one hundred and three
(103) new COVID-19 cases from samples collected between January 21 st and
February 3 rd . These new cases were detected through the testing of contacts of
known positives, routine screening and testing of persons with flu symptoms. Many
of the cases are clustered in families and small social groups including patrons of
gambling sheds and rum shops. There are now one thousand and twenty-one (1021)
local cases of COVID-19. Four hundred and ninety-four (494) of these cases are
contacts of known positives, while one hundred and seventy-seven (177) are persons
who presented with flu-like symptoms and tested positive for COVID-19. Fortyseven
(47) persons have been found to be positive for COVID-19 during exit
screening. The laboratory forms of three hundred and three (303) persons who tested
positive had no record of the reason for testing and may have been part of random
screening. While there are many new clusters of cases, this pattern of transmission
is consistent with community spread.
A review of the COVID-19 cases since December 16, 2020 revealed that the
positivity rate for COVID-19 testing dramatically increased from 6.6% on January
11 th to 15.7% on January 21 st, 16.6% on January 28 th and 15.3% on January 30 th .
Testing on samples taken on February 1 st and 2 nd so far gives incidence rates of 2.7%
and 3.2%. Given the incubation period of 14 days, increases in these rates due to
spread which occurred around January 28 are anticipated in the coming days.
1
continued on following page…
A significant proportion of the cases recorded from testing done between January
20 th and 28 th came from the Georgetown health district, specifically Sandy Bay, and
the Chateaubelair health district.
In view of the increased risk of spread of COVID-19 in indoor locations where
masks use and physical distancing are reduced, the following additional measures
under the Public Health Act of 2020 have been recommended and statutory rules and
orders are currently being drafted for a ticketing system in support of their
enforcement:
1. The mandatory use of masks in all public transportation vehicles.
2. All public vehicles may only transport a maximum of half their permitted
number of passengers. (A 20-seater van will be allowed to transport 10
persons inclusive of the driver and conductor.)
3. No indoor dining in eating establishments. Only take away service will be
allowed for indoor restaurants. Outdoor dinning with adequate spacing is
permitted.
4. Enforcement of all components of the mass gathering protocol with particular
emphasis on indoor gatherings at places of entertainment such as bars,
gambling sheds and rum shops.
5. Mandatory masks in all public establishments and private establishments to
which the public has access.
These measures will commence with the publication of the Statutory Rules and
Orders specific to the ticketing system to be implemented. This publication is
anticipated to occur between today Friday, February 5 and Monday, February 8,
2021. These measures will be in place for four weeks in the first instance.
SVG GETS ALLOCATION OF COVID VACCINE
St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados and several Eastern Caribbean Countries who signed
agreements with the COVAX Facility have been informed of the indicative allocation of COVID-
19 vaccines. St. Vincent and The Grenadines’ allocation is for 45,600 indicative doses of
AstraZeneca.
This means that St. Vincent and the Grenadines can expect to receive the COVID-19 vaccine(s)
over the coming few weeks. The vaccines are the first of the assigned doses to satisfy COVAX’s
agreement with this country.
The COVAX facility has advised that vaccines will be delivered effective mid to late February
with 357, 600 doses of the AstraZeneca AZD1222 vaccine, to Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda,
Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The
allocation was determined by the World Health Organization (WHO) panel of experts and GAVI
taking a big step towards equal access to COVID-19 vaccines.
The main objective of this allocation is for countries to begin vaccinating their priority populations
as quickly as possible.
Minister of Health St Clair Prince says this development is: “a significant boost in our fight against
the disease and the safety of the population, a transformative complement to the measures already 1
in place in our COVID-19 response.”
Chief Medical Officer Dr Simone Keizer-Beache notes that: “The allocation of 45,600
AstraZeneca COVID vaccines to SVG with 25% being available in the first quarter, is an extremely
important development in our battle to control the spread of COVID-19 in SVG and to return to
some level of normalcy.
“Our strategy was always aimed at keeping the virus out of SVG for as long possible until a
vaccine became available. We will now move to rapidly but safely vaccinate sufficient of our
population to allow for the protection of all of the population,” Keizer Beache adds.
The CMO explains that: “Even as we await the actual receipt of these vaccines from Covax, we
are cognizant of the need to procure additional vaccines to adequately implement phase I of our
national vaccination introduction and deployment plan.”
A release from PAHO states that the COVAX Facility has managed to secure significant doses of
vaccines from various manufacturers. In addition, these are authorized or very close to being
authorized by WHO Emergency Use Listing (EUL). Because EUL has yet to be granted by WHO
in respect of this vaccine, the Facility has for now only provided an indicative number of doses,
covering the next two quarters.
The next steps to access the allocation include countries having the necessary indemnity and
liability frameworks, including the required legislative framework in place where necessary, in
order to complete an agreement directly with AstraZeneca.
