People in the town of Bouar,
in western Central African
Republic (CAR), have been
living in fear since the end of
December, when the town became
one of the theatres for the latest
cycle of violence in the country. A
coalition of armed groups and the
government, supported by its
international allies, are clashing.
The situation is particularly
critical for the thousands of people
who have fled their homes to take
refuge in several religious sites and
plots of land in the city, which is
located nearly 150 kilometres from
the border with Cameroon.
“I don’t know where to go
because the rebels have set up their
base in my neighbourhood,”
explains Rolande, a young
displaced woman. “It’s very
difficult to live here with my baby
who is just one month old.”
“We sleep outside in the cold
without a mosquito net,” she adds.
“My child is sick, but I can’t take
him to the hospital because of the
insecurity and I don’t have money
to pay for the treatment.”
Intense fighting in populated
areas leads people to flee
Medics and Police appeal to the
public to Stay At Home
Continued from Page 1<
· With Covid-19 now spreading
50%-70% faster than at its peak,
workers on the frontline are
pleading with the public to act
like they have the virus and stay
at home, except for absolutely
essential activities.
· In joint effort, Doctors and the
Police are encouraging people
not to bend the rules to help stop
the spread of Covid-19 and
reduce the pressure on the NHS.
· Around a third of people with
Covid-19 have no symptoms,
and more than 1 in 30 people are
infected with the virus in certain
parts of the country, so bending
the rules could be fatal.
· A new NHS infographic has been
released featuring Dr Ranj Singh
explaining the infection rate of
the new Covid-19 variant and
emphasising why we all need to
stay home.
The new, highly contagious
Covid-19 variant is spreading fast -
50% to 70% faster than the variant
in 2020 - leading to increased
pressure on a strained NHS and
more deaths. The R-number has
risen to 1.3 in many parts of the
country, compared to 0.9 at last
year’s peak, placing the country into
a health emergency.
Medics and the Police are calling
on the public to not be complacent
and to stop the spread by sticking to
the rules which are ‘crucial’ if the
country is to successfully ease
pressure on the NHS and minimise
the number of Covid-19 deaths. Any
deviation of the rules could be fatal
to others.
With a third of people having no
symptoms when carrying the virus,
the message is clear from the
frontline workers - we all must act
like we have the virus and
understand that bending the rules
leads to the virus spreading, which
puts a huge amount of pressure on
an already stretched NHS.
A new short infographic film has
been developed with NERVTAG
data and released to demonstrate
how quickly the new Covid-19
variant spreads. The film
demonstrates how in some parts of
the country 1 in 30 people are
infected with the virus, so bending
the rules could be fatal, for example:
o In a street with just a couple of
hundred people living on it, at
least 6 people could have Covid-
19.
o On the average person’s social
media account, 11 of their
followers could have the virus.
o At a full Wembley Stadium, that
would be equivalent to 3,000
fans.
The film is narrated by TV and
NHS medic Dr Ranj Singh and will
run across PR and social media in
England.
As a plea to the nation, Dr Ranj
said: “Please don’t risk contracting
or passing on the virus and stay
home as much as possible. I know it
is tough and we are bored with the
guidelines, but on behalf of my
colleagues in the NHS, please stay
at home. I can see it in my hospital,
staff are struggling to cope with the
amount of care needed to be given
to more and more patients suffering
from this terribly debilitating virus.
“If you are going out to exercise,
please do so as locally as possible,
you have to go to the shops, go
alone, wear a face mask when
indoors and wash your hands before
and afterwards. We all need to be
vigilant.”
The message is clear: stay at
home. However, if you do have to
go outside you must:
o keep two metres away from
everyone
o wear a face mask covering the
nose and mouth when indoors
o keep washing your hands
If you have to go to the shops, go
alone and limit the trips, someone in
your supermarket who has pushed
the same trolley or held the same
basket is likely to have Covid-19.
If you have to exercise outdoors,
exercise locally and never exercise
with more than one person from
Whilst the vast majority of the
public have supported this huge
national effort and followed the
rules, the actions of a few people
who are ignoring or bending the
rules is putting everyone at risk and
placing further pressure on doctors,
nurses and NHS staff across the
country.
Chair of the National Police
Chiefs’ Council, Martin Hewitt,
said: “We are at the most dangerous
stage of this pandemic and each of
us has a personal responsibility to
do everything we can to stop the
spread of Coronavirus.
“The easiest way to keep our
family and friends safe is to stay at
home. If you have to go out ask
yourself if your journey is essential,
and if it is, then think about the
safest possible way to do that to
minimise contact with others.
“Whilst the vast majority of us
follow the rules and stay at home,
police officers will be visible in
communities tackling those who are
not playing their part. We will not
hesitate to issue fines to those
deliberately breaching the
regulations with no regard for the
safety of others.”
The vaccine gives us hope for the
future but rising infection rates and
deaths requires all of our action
now. The situation is serious for
everyone. We all need to play our
amid fear and growing needs
Continued from Page 1<
following the violent fighting on 9 and
17 January.
Displaced people in Bouar living amid fear and growing needs
of Bouar is quite strategic for the
parties to the conflict. On 9 January,
armed groups gathered together as the
new rebel coalition, Coalition des
Patriotes pour le Changement (CPC),
attacked positions of the Central
African Armed Forces (FACA) and the
United Nations Peacekeeping Mission
(MINUSCA) in the town. The clashes
were intense and took place in
densely-populated areas of Bouar.
Violent fighting broke out again on 17
January.
Since then, more than 8,000 people,
including many families and young
children, have been forced to leave
their homes. Nearly half of them are
currently living in the city’s former
cathedral, the largest of the six
makeshift camps for displaced people,
where Médecins Sans Frontières
(MSF) has just started emergency
activities.
MSF providing water and
sanitation, medical care and support
“It is total destitution. The living
conditions in the sites hosting
internally displaced people are
deplorable, particularly due to the lack
of sufficient access to water,” says
Tristan Le Lonquer, MSF Head of
Mission in CAR. “The water network
is no longer functional and the few
wells accessible in the town are not
enough to meet the needs of all the
displaced, so there is a real water
shortage.”
MSF is setting up water points,
building showers and latrines and
installing mobile clinics to provide
basic health care to all displaced
people in need. Since the start of our
activities, in addition to the 20,000
litres of water provided per day, our
teams have carried out 672
consultations in all displaced people’s
sites and referred seven people
requiring further medical care to
hospital. We have distributed basic
necessities kits (non-food items) to
250 families.
MSF is also providing ongoing
support to local medical structures,
particularly in the operating block of
Bouar hospital, where we treated, in
collaboration with the Ministry of
Health, a total of nine war-wounded
Coordinated humanitarian
response needed to meet urgent,
growing needs
The thousands of displaced people,
who fled the fighting and the growing
insecurity as the rebels advance, are
now caught between the need to get
away from danger and the need to
keep an eye on their property and
fields.
Those who have decided to stay are
victims of enforced disappearances,
robbery and extortion by armed men
who now control part of the city. This
violence has not spared the
humanitarian organisations and
infrastructures which have been the
object of numerous lootings and have
therefore had to reduce or suspend
their activities while the needs are
increasing.
The displaced people of Bouar are
facing a growing crisis, and an
effective and coordinated
humanitarian response is urgently
needed.
Health
COVID-19 motivates 7 in 10
Black adults to get healthier
JANUARY 27 - FEBRUARY 9 2020
TheTrumpet
Page7
Arecent England-wide survey revealed
over 90% of Black adults have made the
decision to make healthy changes in
2021, with 7 in 10 saying that they are motivated
to make these changes due to coronavirus.
In addition, the survey found that 36% of
those surveyed said they wanted to adopt a
healthier lifestyle for their children/grandchildren,
whilst 29% wanted to improve their health for
their partner. The data also revealed the most
common things people want to do differently in
the new year are exercising more (60%) and eating
more healthily (58%).
Currently over 73% of Black adults are
overweight or obese, putting them at greater risk
of becoming seriously ill from diseases including
cancer, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
Despite the latest coronavirus restrictions,
there are still lots of ways for people to make these
healthier choices and Public Health England’s
Better Health campaign encourages and supports
adults in taking small steps towards a healthier
lifestyle – whether it’s losing weight or getting
more active.
The Better Health website offers a wide range
of free NHS approved tools and tips to manage
weight loss such as the NHS Weight Loss Plan,
BMI Calculator, Easy Meals App, or to get more
active such as Active 10 and the Couch to 5k
programme.
The Better Health campaign also works in
partnership with a number of weight management
and physical activity partners who are providing
both free and exclusive discounted offers.
Professor Kevin Fenton, London Regional
Director at Public Health England, said: “In spite
of the stresses and challenges we are facing as a
result of COVID-19, it’s especially heartening to
see that more people than ever are motivated to
make positive changes and adopt a healthier
lifestyle this new year.
“The Better Health website has plenty of
healthy eating and physical activity tools, ranging
from the NHS 12 Week Weight Loss Plan to the
Couch to 5k programme, which helps users set
achievable goals to improve their overall health
and wellbeing.”
Dr Sandra Isibor, Nottinghamshire based GP
and Obesity and weight loss management
specialist said: “2020 has been a particularly
challenging year for the Black community, and
now more than ever is a good time for us all to
pause, take a breath and reflect upon what we
consume both physically and mentally to support
our overall wellbeing.
The Better Health website has a wealth of
advice that can help boost our health, whether
that’s losing weight, getting active or looking
after our mental health. The best thing is - it’s
free and easy to use, with lots of tips and tools
that you can put into practice at your own pace.”
Carl, 40, from Sheffield says: “During the
previous lockdown, starting up a new charity was
rewarding but tough, however all this new work
meant I was not able to take as much care of
myself. I would get more fast food being out on
the road a lot and didn’t realise I had put weight on
during that time. To be able to help kick start my
weight loss in 2021, I am trying to find alternative
foods that I can eat – and plan on using the Easy
Meals app to help with this.”
PHE are working with (Black) healthcare
professionals and other experts to ensure the
campaign guidance and tools are culturally
compatible with members of the community, as
findings also revealed around 32% of Black adults
said finding relevant information and tools to help
guide better physical health is a big challenge.
Opinion
Be bold and cut out entitlement, no
one owes us anything
By NJ Ayuk
In 2021, most opportunities in the
energy sector and in business in general
will go to those who show up and
negotiate better deals and get involved in
making African resources work for us.
Forget handouts, foreign aid and
government handouts.
As I wrote in the second edition of
Billions at Play: The Future of African
Energy and Doing Deals, in 2021, young
African dealmakers, negotiators and
lawyers will have to embrace a new
mindset to win. They will have to mobilize
their resources and advocate for important
principles of personal responsibility,
smaller government, lower taxes, free
markets, personal liberty, and the rule of
law.
In 2021, African gas projects are going
to be in the news. Companies will push to
get them going, from Mozambique to
Nigeria and from Equatorial Guinea to
Tanzania.
If some extremists have their way, none
of these projects should happen and our
people should be left in the dark. Question
we must also ask is how Africans are going
to participate when it comes to jobs and
contracts. In 2021, we cannot be
bystanders. We all can’t afford to.
Africa’s economic recovery from
Covid-19 and our global significance in the
era of energy transition and attacks on our
energy sector must be driven by the talent
and entrepreneurship of its people.
Our continent is still struggling when it
comes to establishing democratic and trade
institutions, we must push for more
democracy. Democracy isn’t perfect but it
is the best of all political practices and we
must embrace it.
I have a few words of advice for this
generation, for Africa’s young attorneys,
entrepreneurs, rising stars and dealmakers:
Never lose sight of the significance of
your work.
By negotiating effectively for African
businesses and governments, you can play
a huge role in transforming the lives of
hundreds of thousands of Africans. Few
things in life are more satisfying.
I am proud of the law group I have
built, but I consider the work I have done to
get justice for and empower African
individuals, businesses, and communities
among my greatest successes.
I am the first to advise many young
people to avoid feeling entitled to anything.
No one owes you or us anything. We have
to earn it. Our approach and success in oil
and gas negotiations stem from our deep
preparation and mindset. More of that is
needed in 2021.
I have stated many times: you succeed
when you look for mentors and let them
mentor you. It’s important to have
someone who is promoting you when you
Advice to next generation of Africans - Be bold and cut out entitlement
are not in the room. Next, be stubbornly
loyal. Don’t try to pull a fast one because
you know more than others! Further,
embrace your trials and shortcomings for
they teach you to be a better person and
lawyer.
I have seen too many young lawyers or
rising stars who get a chance to be on a
podium, and then tend to spend more time
being celebrities than being around
colleagues or supervisors.
Many so-called celebrities have not
earned a deal and completed one, so avoid
having a big head. For me, if you have not
closed a deal and are not making money,
you need to keep your philosophies to
yourself. It is crucial to have a strong focus
on building your skills because clients and
business partners really want you to be
good at what you do. Your writing, critical
thinking, commercial mindset and in-depth
industry skills cannot hurt you. Most
clients want to know who is working on
their deals, and they do not care about your
race or nationality. They want to know you
are qualified and can get the job done.
When you finally get a deal done and
you get your first bonus or check, do not
fall in the trap of buying that fancy car or
getting into fast life. You will get broke so
quickly. Spend wisely even when you think
you have arrived where you need to be.
Always think there is more and stay
hungry. Look at the Texas oil boys, they are
always hungry. They wear their cowboy
boots and continue searching for the next
big discovery.
Hashtags do not pay the bills. Get off
your phone.
Get offline, social media is nice but it
isn’t everything, we have seen people who
prefer to sit on their phone even during
business meetings rather than engage on
real business. How do want a deal when
you are busy on your whatsapp group
chats? Why have a meeting with someone
when you will be on your phone while they
are talking? Get out of the room and take
the call or send a message. If you decide to
work on your Instagram while talking to
me, I walk you out of my office or end the
meeting. When you don’t get the job or the
contract, don’t be so quick on blaming the
“White Man” or Racism.
I know this will get the young
generation annoyed, but its real. We need
to start having a post-covid mindset and
know we will have to engage again. I am
not crazy about Zoom meetings, but we
have to do it. Business is not about who
had the best tweet two hours ago or who
does the best hooting and hollering. Get
down on the ground and make money. Do
not believe those who tell you money is
bad. We know it is bad being broke and we
hate being broke. You should never
apologise for working hard and making
money. To do that, you must be focused
and yes, get off your phone.
Commit to work. Pay your dues.
Your time to shine will come.
Always ask yourself, “Am I adding value
to the firm or the company?” Don’t think
you are in the firm to be the Labour Union
representative or the head of diversity.
Do not walk around the firm or even a
negotiation with arrogance or give off a
sense that you are entitled, or that your
opinion matters on every subject. You are
not owed anything. It is important not to
cry over discrimination on every issue,
whether it is sexism, racism, or
xenophobia.
You beat them with excellence and
success. We see it every day and you will
be surprised it comes from the same
liberals who claim to love all humans and
want to save the world. They will love to
Opinion
JANUARY 27 - FEBRUARY 9 2020 TheTrumpet
Marwa will do a great job at NDLEA
Page11
For those of us in the Diaspora, there
is need for absolute caution on how
we yield our platforms for some
felonious elements who masquerade as
business or political leaders to do some
hatchet jobs either intentionally or
inadvertently.
I say this regarding a post on
Facebook by a fellow Ibadan-man based
in the USA. The post came 24 hours after
the newly appointed Chairman/CEO of
NDLEA, Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa
took over at the anti-drug law
enforcement agency - when he read the
riot act to drug barons and traffickers that
with him in the saddle, they will have the
NDLEA to contend with if they do not
stop their illicit trade.
Mohammed Buba Marwa
That is typical of Marwa with
hindsight on what he did with ‘Operation
Saki’ and ‘Operation Sweep’ against
criminal elements as Military
Administrator in Borno and Lagos States,
respectively.
The Facebook post to me is
suspicious, more so that it is laden with
falsehood and fiction. It is a known fact
that Marwa was harassed by former
President Obasanjo, using the EFCC
when he wanted to vie for the Presidency
in 2006/2007. And that was where it all
ended. But to claim he forfeited
properties in Europe and America is
ridiculous. I will like such evidence
produced if there was anything like
that. This could only have happened
under a plea bargain or upon prosecution.
And from my enquiries so far, nothing
like that happened, as I even got to know
he was later exonerated by the same
agency after no infraction was established
against him. Otherwise, he could have
been prosecuted long ago. We have also
read of many such previous plea bargains
in the public domain as EFCC usually
makes it public. None of such was made
public by EFCC to date.
I have gone this far, to urge our fellow
Diasporans that we should only yield our
platforms to facts-based narratives rather
than deriding our reputation and
presenting ourselves as pensionaries.
For a man who worked for two years
along with others to develop a blueprint
on how to end drug abuse in Nigeria as
Chairman, Presidential Advisory
Committee for the Elimination of Drug
Abuse, PACEDA, I do not think anyone
is more qualified for the task of
repositioning NDLEA as him. For a twotime
Governor to accept such a task
By Akintokunbo A Adejumo
akinadejum@aol.com
should be commended rather
than the unnecessary attacks.
I have followed Gen. Marwa’s
trajectory of public service as Military
Attaché, Nigerian Embassy, Washington
DC, USA, and Defence Attaché, United
Nations, New York, as well as Nigeria’s
former Ambassador to South Africa and
the Kingdoms of Lesotho and Swaziland.
In addition to being Military
Administrator in Borno and Lagos States,
his records of performance anywhere he
goes has been excellent. As such, we
should give him all the support and
cooperation needed to succeed in his
assignment.
My take and opinion, ONLY!
Be bold and cut out entitlement, no
one owes us anything
Continued from Page 10<
patronize you and put you in your place. I
have experienced it myself. I just work
harder, and success follows.
You must understand that building a
successful practice or business calls for
something not taught in law school or
business school or any school: the ability
to hustle and deliver on deals. I have
always had run-ins with young lawyers
because I can be a tough, goal-oriented
taskmaster. I have a fierce sense of urgency
that many others don’t share.
Working for Centurion is not for the
naïve or the fainthearted - we don’t tolerate
young lawyers viewing Centurion as
merely a job. Everyone has to give their
maximum effort all the time.
The truth is, I am harder on myself. I
am never satisfied, and I just believe I can
win bigger and do the deal better. The most
important outcome for me is to have people
around me achieve more than they ever
thought they could.
Lean in and take the heat for your
client or causes you believe in, and for
Africa
In 2021, you will have to visible, be
vocal in defending the African energy
sector from those that want to end it and
you must capitalize on the opportunities
that you see. One of the key things you
must do in 2021, is take the heat for your
clients. I have never had a problem being
called an ambulance-chaser in the past.
Today, I am that ambulance that is being
chased and many know I will always stand
with them and I built a strategy of taking
the heat for them. Don’t let them push on
your client or kill your issue. Develop a
thick skin and let them hit you. If I can’t
take the heat, I have no business being in
the kitchen.
I have been pushed, been kicked,
sometimes been spat on, lied on,
demonized, talked about and even derided
in the media. It does not bother me one bit,
I always know I am going to outlast my
detractors or competition. In 2020, we
made more money than any other year with
Centurion Plus, our latest on-demand
service. I have also been invited to meet
with Presidents, Ministers, CEO’s and even
Royals. But I never lost my way.
Never take your eyes off the prize. Be
patient, play chess, keep smiling, be ready
to take a punch and definitely hit back and
do it harder. Maybe a combination of Jabs,
Uppercuts and Hooks. That’s going to be
you in 2021. It‘s going to be a fight to stay
alive, stay employed, stay in business, stay
relevant and stay sane when everything and
everyone around you is going crazy.
You are going to be tested. They are going
to come after you. sometimes even your
own friends and those who laugh with you
then stab you in the back. You will be
called a traitor to most of your liberal elitist
friends who feel entitled, drink latte with
soy or almond milk. They sometimes
cannot believe that this kid who was their
darling and their best boo does not buy into
their tree hugging, cry me a river ideology.
You and I will have to believe and fight for
Africa first, against energy poverty, and for
personal responsibility, free markets,
limited government and yes we must not
be ashamed of being people of faith.
The wisdom and advice my law school
mentor and professor - John Radsan, who
used to serve as the CIA’s assistant general
counsel and Ron Walters shared with me
hold true for you today: each one of us has
a mandate to use our education and skills to
impact communities and to promote
economic growth and empowerment.
So, yes, seek career success and prosperity
in 2021. But, in the end, choose to do good:
use your skills to make sure that every day,
Africans receive their fair share of the
benefits the continent’s natural resources
can provide.
‘Protect them no longer’ - murder
victim’s family appeals
Page13
The family of a man shot dead in
Shepherd’s Bush seven months ago
are appealing for anyone with
information about his murder to come
forward.
Alexander Kareem was fatally shot at
00:40hrs on Monday, 8 June 2020 as he
walked along Askew Road, W12. The 20-
year-old had just left a shop and was
heading to a friend’s house. His death is
believed to have been a case of mistaken
identity.
Seven months on, detectives are
reissuing CCTV of a white Range Rover
which was found burned out on Ascott
Avenue just 25 minutes after the first call
to police. A vast trawl of CCTV has taken
place to track its movement across London,
but officers still want to hear from anyone
who knows anything about its
movements on the night of the murder or
before.
They are also keen to hear from anyone
with any other information, no matter how
minor, that may help advance their
investigation.
The independent charity Crimestoppers
is offering a £10,000 reward for
information that leads to the arrest of the
person or people responsible for
Alexander’s murder.
Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Jolley,
from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command
(Homicide), said: “The investigation
continues at great pace. We still believe the
answers to a lot of the questions are linked
to the white Range Rover in the CCTV
we’re reissuing today.
“We are determined to find those
responsible for this terrible crime which
resulted in Alexander tragically losing his
life. We are working to find the answers for
his family who have been left devastated by
his loss.
“If you know anything, no matter how
small or insignificant you think it is, please
come forward. If you do not wish to speak
to police, call Crimestoppers which is 100
per cent anonymous.
“We are sure there are people out there
who know what happened. The start of a
new year offers a chance for you to get that
information off your chest. Make the call.”
Alexander’s family have released the
following statement: “The grief we
continue to feel for the loss of our
Alexander is immeasurable. Our hearts
have been broken. Every day that goes by
that we do not know who did this to him is
unbearable.
“Alexander was a caring and loving boy
who had his life tragically cut short by
being in the wrong place, at the wrong time.
He was like any other young boy who liked
to hang out with his friends, play on his
computer and work on his passion which
was IT.
“March will mark Alexander’s 21st
birthday, a day that would have been full of
celebration to mark the wonderful, kind and
intelligent young man he was.
“We are asking you to come forward
with any information you may have, we
need answers for us to start to heal. The
perpetrators are using the silence of the
public as protection against the
consequences of their hideous and
unspeakable crime.
“Please, protect them no longer. Pick up
the phone and do the right thing for
Alexander, his friends and for us, his
family.”
Anyone with information is urged to
call police on 101 quoting the reference
anonymously, by calling Crimestoppers on
Police e-fit officer to retire after 15 years
ALondon Metropolitan (Met) Police
officer whose artistic talents have
helped solve some of the Met’s
most serious crimes is set to retire at the end
of March after 15 years in the organisation.
PC Tony Barnes transferred to the Met
from Essex Police in 2006 and has been the
force’s only e-fit operator since 2013.
Here he talks about his experiences, the
cases that will always stay with him and
why e-fits remain a vital investigative tool.
“I like to tell people one of two things
about me. Either that I’m the most
published artist in the Evening Standard or
that I’m the only police officer in London
who’s paid to draw pictures all day long.
Both are true I think, although Banksy gets
his fair share of column space.
Whatever I tell people, I know that I
have been incredibly lucky to do something
at work that I love doing. Not only can I use
my natural creative talents but I get to meet
very interesting people. I joined up as a PC
but when I saw this opportunity, I knew it
was right for me and that’s proved exactly
right.
Over the years I have carried out
interviews in every London borough and
interviewed at least two thousand people
from a variety of backgrounds. They all had
one thing in common though. They had
either been the victim of, or witness to a
crime. Some of them, very serious indeed.
This is something that is often forgotten
by the press. I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t
laughed at some of the e-fits I have seen
over the years. I bet you have as well. The
truth is that every e-fit that you see in the
press or on TV is not the vision of the
police officer or police staff member. It is
what the witness has described to those
officers. Sure the artistic skills of some of
the composite artists may be lacking at
times, but that image only appears for
public consumption if the witness says
there is a likeness to the suspect.
I have pride in all the images that I have
helped create over the years, even if some
very old images look unrealistic by today’s
standards. Of course not all e-fit images
lead to an arrest but lots have, including the
conviction of Derry McCann who
committed a rape in Victoria Park on the
same day that he later got married. He was
sentenced to life in prison.
People sometimes ask whether e-fits are
still needed today, given the extent of
CCTV and other technology. And while it’s
of course true that these things have
diminished the need for e-fits in some
ways, there are always criminals who lurk
in the shadows and manage to evade any
cameras. That’s where we come in and why
I think there will always be a place for what
we do.
That leads me on nicely to the future.
Four new officers have been given the
national training accreditation in e-fit, and
are currently being taught about all things
in the composite image world by a very
strict teacher (me).
As for me? I’m off to the countryside in
a floppy hat and smock to paint until the
sun goes down.”
they have maintained since the
rankings were first launched 17
years ago.
“It’s difficult to get to the top, but
it’s just as complicated to stay
there,” says Nigeria goalkeeper
Chiamaka Nnadozie, explaining the
challenge facing her side to
FIFA.com. “You become the team
to beat, the one everybody wants to
knock off the throne. For us, we owe
it to ourselves to stay at the top. That
means never taking our dominant
position for granted, and obviously
never stopping working hard.”
Nnadozie has good reason to
remain prudent. No African side
reached further than Nigeria at the
FIFA Women’s World Cup France
2019, but after their Round of 16
exit, they then failed to qualify for
the Women’s Olympic Football
Chiamaka Nnadozie - Staying calm
Chiamaka Nnadozie
Tournament at Tokyo 2020. Their
hopes were ultimately dashed by
Côte d’Ivoire, who edged through
despite being unable to beat the
Super Falcons in a pair of draws (0-
0, 1-1). “It happens,” says
Nnadozie. “We know that the level
of competition keeps getting
tougher, but we won’t let up.”
The youngster is clearly blessed
with a strong character. She needs it
too, given the importance of her role
in the team at just 19 years of age.
“I’d be lying to you if I said there’s
no pressure,” she adds. “I have a lot
of it, but I’ve learned how to deal
with it. The key is to stay calm and
keep your composure. You need to
keep a cool head whatever happens
and never panic. Staying calm
allows you to get out of any
situation.”
Her predictions for The Best
FIFA Men’s and Women’s
Goalkeepers
“For the men’s award, I’m a huge
fan of Manuel Neuer, so he’s my
favourite. For the women, in my
opinion it comes down to a duel
between Sarah Bouhaddi and Alyssa
Naeher. I don’t have a preference,
but for me those two are the best
women’s goalkeepers in the world.”
Already an impressive CV
That approach has served her
well so far, Nnadozie having first
announced her talent at the FIFA U-
20 Women’s World Cup France
2018. She then followed that up
with convincing performances at
France 2019 and even set a new
record, becoming the youngest
goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet at a
Women’s World Cup when she
helped Nigeria defeat Korea
Republic 2-0 at the age of 18 and
186 days.
“That was something that meant
a lot to me,” says Nnadozie. “Before
that, I didn’t even think I’d make it
into the squad of 23 players. So, to
take part in that World Cup, to play
and then to keep a clean sheet… it
was one dream coming true after
another. It looks great on a CV! And
it gives me encouragement. It makes
me want to go even further.”
In the meantime, Nnadozie’s
ability has already taken her back to
France, where she is getting to grips
with the French top flight – “a
tough, competitive championship
that’s undoubtedly one of the best in
the world”. Wearing the gloves for
Paris FC, the teenager is now
enjoying life in the capital. “Paris is
extraordinary,” she says. “Of course,
I’ve explored its streets, the Eiffel
Tower, the Arc de Triomphe. I’m
very happy to be living here.”
The only down side is being so
far from her family, though that too
is a challenge Nnadozie has taken in
her stride. “It’s very difficult, but
that’s just part of my job. I have to
concentrate on my future.” Indeed,
and not least since she herself
represents the future of the Super
Falcons.
