The architect‘s office, Abcarius & Burns, has produced one of their most
minimalistic, futuristic, airy buildings in the street parallel to Linien-
strasse famous for its art scene at house number 12. Right next to a large
number of studios and shops that are meant to be coming, the restrained
building characterised by its clear-cut shapes, large areas of glass and
airy construction offers ideal conditions for displaying expressive works.
The young gallery owner, Natalie Viaux, has made use of this building
and in the rooms on the first floor and in the basement has opened a new
chapter in the Berlin art landscape with the second branch of her fashion
photography gallery.
Das Architekten-Büro Abcarius & Burns hat in der Parallelstraße der für
ihre Kunstszene berühmten Linienstraße unter der Hausnummer 12 einen
ihrer minimalistischen, futuristischen und leichten Bauten realisiert. In di-
rekter Nachbarschaft zu einer Vielzahl an Ateliers und angesagten Shops
bietet das von klaren Formen, großen Glasflächen und luftigen Strukturen
geprägte und zurückhaltende Gebäude ideale Voraussetzungen zur Präsen-
tation expressiver Werke. Die junge Galeristin Natalie Viaux hat sich diese
Strukturen zunutze gemacht und in den Räumlichkeiten im Erd- und Unter-
geschoss mit der zweiten Niederlassung ihrer Galerie für Modefotografie ein
neues Kapitel der Berliner Kunstlandschaft eröffnet.
Thousands and thousands of photos rush through the specialist maga-
zines and publications. A short-lived glance at the sometimes breathtak-
ingly beautiful, intelligent compositions and the inevitable end as waste
paper are normally the stages in the short life cycle of these works of art.
For a long time the status of fashion photography was not clear. Many
still consider it today to be a pure product of the advertising and news-
paper industry, but an increasing number of collectors, art and fashion
fans, private individuals and professionals see it differently. Fashion pho-
tography is normally commissioned photography. But the more freedom
the photographer has, the nearer the result comes to art.
Unzählige Fotostrecken rauschen monatlich durch die einschlägigen Ma-
gazine und Publikationen. Ein schnelllebiger Blick auf zum Teil atembe-
raubend schöne und intelligente Kompositionen und ein unumgängliches
Ende im Altpapier sind in der Regel die Stationen im kurzen Lebenszyklus
dieser Kunstwerke. Lang war der Status der Modefotografie ungeklärt.
Viele halten sie noch heute für ein reines Produkt der Werbe- und Zei-
tungswirtschaft, doch eine zunehmende Zahl von Sammlern, Kunst- und
Modeinteressierten, Privatpersonen und Professionals sieht das anders.
Modefotografie ist zwar in der Regel Auftragsfotografie. Aber je größer
die Freiheit des Fotografen, desto näher kommt das Ergebnis auch der
Kunst.
The majority of readers flick through it, enjoy it and throw it away. Others
fall in love and would like nothing more than to be in possession of one
of their favourite pictures. Before the Galerie Viaux was opened there
was almost no opportunity to buy contemporary fashion photographs.
Viaux‘s personal passion for fashion photography inspired the former
MTV editor to create a forum for this art form. And since 2003 she has
been the first and only gallery owner in Germany to offer fashion photog-
raphers the opportunity to display their published works and interested
collectors the opportunity to buy limited editions of the Newtons of to-
morrow still at reasonable prices.
Das Gros der Leserschaft blättert, genießt und wirft weg. Andere verlie-
ben sich und wünschen sich nichts mehr, als in den Besitz eines von ih-
nen favorisierten Bildes zu kommen. Bis zur Eröffnung der Galerie Viaux
gab es indes kaum eine Möglichkeit, zeitgenössische Modefotografie zu
kaufen. Viauxs persönliche Leidenschaft für Modefotografie inspirierte
die ehemalige MTV-Redakteurin dazu, ein Forum für diese Kunstform zu
schaffen. Und seit 2003 bietet sie nun als erste und einzige Galeristin
in Deutschland Modefotografen die Gelegenheit, ihre publizierten Werke
auszustellen, und interessierten Sammlern, die Newtons von morgen in
limitierter Edition und zu noch erschwinglichen Preisen zu kaufen.
On display are large format, high quality prints of particular personalities and
themes. Because obviously the gallery doesn‘t display any product illustrations.
Particular attention is paid to the fact that they are special productions that ide-
ally tell a story. Some of the photographers who have exhibited here and thus
whose photos can be obtained from the gallery are international great names
such as Philippe Cometti, Robert Nettarp, Stefano Galuzzi, but also newcomers
and up-and-coming talents such as Alexander Gnädiger or Jean Francois Carly,
whose realistic and at the same time charmingly beautiful, multi-faceted set-
tings we are allowed to feature with the kind permission of the gallery and the
artists on the following pages.
Ausgestellt werden großformatige, hochwertige Abzüge besonderer Per-
sönlichkeiten und Motive. Denn natürlich stellt die Galerie keine Produkt-
abbildungen aus. Es wird darauf geachtet, dass es sich um besondere In-
