EDITORIAL
The German capital is reinventing itself.
Living in Berlin promises variety and inspiration. Old and new meet in stark
contrast to each other and nowhere else are highly polished luxury and the raw
reality of the street so close together as they are here. Berlin is marked by change
and the inhabitants are just as dynamic and unique as the city. The Mitte (Centre)
district embodies a concentrated expression of this energy.
Mitte is more unconventional than New York, more laid-back than Paris and sun-
nier than London. And for me at least, this part of the city symbolises concentrat-
ed creativity, style and British composure. Mitte is a multi-faceted conglomerate
of ideas and visions that have been put into practice, in great architecture, art,
culture and the best entertainment. Aladdin‘s caves of shopping such as Galerie
Lafayette, international designer brand flagship stores and more than 150 galler-
ies await their customers here and more and more creative people from all over
the world and from all walks of life are discovering Mitte to be a real hot spot for
trends in fashion, design and lifestyle.
In this book, we would like to give you a snapshot of this unique part of Berlin to
show you what makes Mitte so attractive as a place to live. We have conducted
interviews with people who are realising their dreams here. We have looked behind
the facades of old ruins, researched a whole range of unusual things for you and
chosen pictures that embody the style and awareness of life in Mitte for us. But
don‘t worry, we haven‘t given everything away. There are still lots of hidden places
to discover and new ones are coming up – because Berlin has a future. Perhaps
even yours.
Have lots of fun reading and discovering!
BaCk to Future
Two Berlin bakery products are still as popular as ever: the common Schrippe (long
bread roll) and the delicious yeast cake with fruit and crumble topping. But although
Berlin is teeming with bakeries and pseudo bakeries, you can hardly get either of
them in the original quality anywhere. The Balzer bakery in Sophienstrasse is the
best possible place to drop anchor. Here everything is still baked by hand and with
genuine ingredients to age-old family recipes. This bedrock of Berlin baking art has
been going since 1928 and the founder‘s daughter, Traudel Balzer (73), is still not
tired of fulfilling the wishes of her happy customers. Three cheers for Mrs. Balzer!
Andreas Murkudis describes himself somewhat unglamorously as a “retailer”,
although many in the industry are jealous of the academic fashion designer for his
sense of aesthetics. But restraint is his watchword. Nothing is strident, striking or
superficial. In his two showrooms you are more likely to find timeless design with
the highest quality of manufacture. Exquisite books published by Revolver are on e15
brand jeans. This creative mixture of fashion, art and design go down so well that
London and New York are already sitting up and taking notice.
If only Berlin was blessed with as much of everything as it is with parks .... this one
is a small green oasis that is looking for its own sort: the “Friedhofspark Pap-
pelallee”. Almost as hidden as the private parks in London, in the lively heart of
Prenzlau Berg, this former cemetery was turned into a public park in 1995. Today
it is considered an idyllic island of calm for many inhabitants of the district. Shady
trees, well-tended flower beds, individual restored grave stones, lawns and seats
make the facility which, 160 years ago was only worth 400 thalers to a landowner,
into a priceless piece of big city quality of life.
D Pappelallee 5- · Friedhofspark Pappelallee

Everybody knows the fairy tale “1001 nights” but “The world of 1001 wines”, the
Günter & Reno Jünemann, Meike Böhme and Gisela Seppeler have one thing in com-
a camel hair slipper that really packs a punch. In Honecker‘s day the DDR slipper was
worn on the feet of every East German father and was sought-after contraband for
West Berliners. Today it is a classic. The women are going different ways and designing
elegant models that remind you of ballerinas or slippers that must once have served as
that the “parquet polishers” are sent even as far as America and Japan today.
Very suspicious. After a business dinner my host wanted
to take me off to experience Berlin night life. But other
than expected, we didn‘t head for a cocktail bar or disco-
theque but arrived at the door of a completely innocent-
looking house. We rang the bell and the door opened and
after going down a few steps in a normal hallway, we found
ourselves in the Münzsalon, an old flat converted into a
beautiful club. Lots of different sorts of people, electronic
sounds, a lively, but not exuberant atmosphere and a pleas-
ant background noise of conversations greeted us.
After we‘d put our things in the cloakroom, we soon found
a pleasant spot where we could see all that was going on and whiled away some
time there. It isn‘t crowded. But unlike in bars nothing strikes me as unpleasant
here. The furnishings are modern and complement the classical style of stucco and
double doors. The lighting is pleasant and the service courteous. After the first few
swigs I at last have time to look at the other guests more closely. They look like
the adverts. Musicians perhaps, or in the media, television. Creative people. Berlin
bohemians but nice.
you can quickly start up a conversation and it can even be finished without any
problems without constantly being jostled or having to shout at the top of your
voice because the music is too loud.
Admittedly, I think the unisex toilets take some getting used to. But apart from this
small thing the Münzsalon has really widened my horizons and is definitely an in-
spired alternative to spending the evening in the hotel bar or in front of the televi-
sion at home.
For a handful of shrimps. When I got an invitation from a major watch manufac-
turer to the elite China Club Berlin at the Brandenburg Gate, I didn‘t hesitate. Since
it was founded in 2003, the club, located in a building at the back of the Adlon Hotel
has been the place to go for Berlin high society. You only become a member by
recommendation and paying a membership fee of an unknown amount. As could
be expected from an invitation from a luxury brand, the evening began with pink
champagne as an entrée. The atmosphere of the two-storey club has a somewhat
gloomy, outdated effect on me. But this matches the target group exactly, antiques,
fine wood floors, carvings. When I look round for a second time I am struck by all
the paintings on the walls. The works are a mixture of different epochs, styles and
techniques and all refer to China. Each one of them and above all the dialogue that
takes place between them before the viewer‘s eyes is entertaining and fascinating.
Meanwhile, the evening follows a traditional pattern: Introduction (with canapés),
aperitifs, seated dinner. What could the organiser have chosen as more suitable
Konversation gegeben. Man kommt also schnell ins Gespräch
Entree. Das Ambiente des zweistöckigen Clubs wirkt auf
mich etwas düster und altbacken. Was ja aber durchaus zur
than Chinese food? The meal, I must confess, is magnifi-
cent. The people on my table are disconcerting. Just like
on a package tour the plates are laden with the most obvi-
ous delicacies. Anyone who buys a watch for more than
EUR 50,000 can surely treat themselves to shrimps?
With the obligatory drink and cigar the evening draws to a
close. You wonder whether there‘s a conclusion?
The creators have succeeded in making a harmonious
atmosphere that is thoroughly stimulating and cosy. The
furnishings are exclusive. The service leaves nothing to be
desired. But the elite sanctimoniousness around the club
and the associated social territorial behaviour are not really
to my taste. I doubt that I would ever become a member
here. Because I think just like Groucho Marx: “I wouldn‘t
dream of belonging to a club that would accept me as a
member.”

Romann Fehrentz is a very busy man. Apart from an exceptionally
good dental practice, he actually runs the Braun-
Fehrentz interior studio that doesn‘t only specialise in bathrooms.
And as if that were not enough to do in a day, he
recently opened a Japanese style soup restaurant, the artistically designed Susuru. What
drives this man and what links him to Berlin? We met Romann on a very hot, sunny day,
to get to the bottom of these questions.
INTERVIEW Stephan Burkoff PORTRAIT Christian Brox FOTO Ludger Paffrath
Is there something that links the things that you do?
What motivates me and what I really enjoy doing is creat-
ing situations so that they work and can be used perfectly.
It doesn‘t matter whether it‘s my dental practice, a build-
ing to be constructed or a restaurant. At the beginning of
projects I always ask myself the same question: What do
the customers really need? How do others do it and what
do I want to do better?
Why have you just opened a restaurant for Japanese
food?
I‘ve always been fascinated by the idea of a coffee shop.
A high table, at which many people sit next to each other.
Where people who don‘t know each other at all can talk to
each other but don‘t have to and where you can easily get
a quick drink and have a snack. And with the incidentally
very healthy, fresh Japanese food that we offer, we have
found a very simple, quick, varied, easily-digestible cuisine
for this basic idea that is in keeping with the times. Freshly
prepared soups with noodles – that‘s our idea of fast food.
But obviously the restaurant should also express my inter-
est in perfection and my aesthetic demands, i.e. our ability
as fitters.
Do you think that a multi-faceted life such as yours
would be possible in any city other than Berlin?
It would be difficult. Unlike other cities there is still scope here
for new ideas and above all there are also places to build to
bring these ideas to fruition. In both cases, with the interior
studio and with the restaurant, there were hardly any direct
competitors here in Mitte. This is a unique situation in itself.
MuLTITAsK KInG
But not the only reason for choosing this location?
No. We also had to ask ourselves where our customers were living. Where do people
with very great interest in creative, high-quality bathrooms live who also have the
financial means to buy these particular tasteful items? Who uses the sort of things
that we make with Susuru and BraunFehrentz and where are the creative people and
implementers that we need as disseminators for our projects? Well, these people now
live and work in Mitte.
Is there anything you haven‘t got here?
A really good baker. Anything you can get from high street chains is not worth
talking about both in terms of shop design and also the product. People don‘t re-
ally want to go into them but there‘s really no other option. That could be my next
project. But before, if everything falls into place, I am going to open another bath-
room studio this year, a shop just dealing in goods from one Italian manufacturer, in
the historic WMF building on Leipziger Strasse.
What do you tell your international customers about Berlin?
I, personally, travel a lot. And I find that Berlin is actually the leading city in Europe
and has the most opportunities for the future. Berlin has such a terrifically creative
potential. You can see it seething inMitte and new buildings are going up all the
time. Today, there may still be something of Berlin in some places. But Rosenthaler
Strasse has shown what it is going to be like. Where once there were only small
shops selling trashy goods, international brands with their high-quality flagship
stores have now become established there. I think that this will be a pattern for
Berlin and above all for Mitte.

andere und was will ich besser machen?
viele Leute nebeneinander sitzen.
In beiden Fällen, beim
Projekte brauchen? Tja, und diese Menschen wohnen und ar-
beiten nun mal heute in Mitte.
Gibt es etwas, was dir hier fehlt?
Ein wirklich guter Bäcker. Alles, was man so an Ketten ange-
dukt her indiskutabel.
Was erzählst du deiner internationalen Kundschaft über
Berlin?
SUSURU (to sip in Japanese) Freshly cooked
from the best ingredients, quickly and easily
– Japanese soup. Fast food à la Romann
Fehrentz is served in bowls and can either be
eaten at the counter or in elegant seating.

LITTLE italy
Berlin‘s most famous weekly market in Kollwitzplatz
TEXT Katja Mollenhauer FOTO Christian Thomas
A market that was only set up six years ago in Kollwitzplatz brings
a little bit of Italian joie de vivre to the centre of Berlin. For that
reason it has long been famous beyond the district, city and even
country borders.
If you ask people living near the Kollwitzplatz what they
would no longer do without in their neighbourhood, then
the Kollwitz market is often one of the first answers they
give. Many like it because they can buy healthy food eas-
ily and quickly, for others it is a fixed part of their Satur-
day routine and still others like to wander up and down
the market stalls once or twice and perhaps meet one of
the many famous people who are supposed to go there.
Alfred Biolek, Maybritt Illner, Jürgen Trittin, they all live
very close and shop here. Even people visiting from out-
side normally wander round the colourful weekly market.
You can get things here that beat the average range in the surrounding supermar-
kets by miles in terms of quality and choice. Where else can you find home made mini
tarts, French sausage specialities or fresh pasta with rocket salad and pine nuts?
Not to mention the five or six varieties of potatoes on what is probably, at some 50
metres, the longest fruit and vegetable stall in the whole of Berlin. There is a large
cheese stall, various butchers with organic meat and sausage products from the area,
a stall selling the legendary Lindner butter, fresh fish, seasonal specialities such as
curly kale, pressed juices and all sorts of delicacies such as oysters, liquorice, salmon
and caviar. Many people find inspiration for the next evening meal, new friends or a
love of cooking for life here.
Wo findet man schon hausgemachte Minitörtchen,
viar. So manch einer findet hier eine Anregung
fürs nächste Abendessen, neue Freunde oder
eine kulinarische Liebe fürs Leben.
There are different sorts of people there depending on the weather and the time: In the
early morning the real shoppers with jute shopping baskets buying their daily needs. At
around midday families and couples who are combining a pleasant walk with a short visit.
And from then on a colourful mixture of people who value the flair and atmosphere of the
market and enjoy being entertained by the good-natured stallholders who ply their wares
at the tops of their voices, have little chats and many tasty morsels to try which they hand
out with a smile. The Kollwitz market has style and contains more than you expect from a
traditional weekly market. Apart from the shopping, relaxation and entertainment.
You‘ve hardly reached the first stall on Saturday morning when, like everyone else, your
pace slows down. Relaxed and satisfied faces everywhere. No frenetic city atmosphere all
around. It is quite a cosy atmosphere, an oasis of
contemplation that fascinates people. To the left
you catch the perfume and the splendour of fresh
lavender and to the right the tasteful flower ar-
rangements of an experienced, well-equipped flo-
rist. Her motto today: What goes with sunflowers?
The result: an enchanting bouquet with delicate,
salmon-coloured roses and lots of greenery. Next
door the Italian grandma with her grandchildren
cannot decide whether it should be the Tuscany
oatcakes or the Tyrolean farm-baked bread and

to sit down in one of the many surrounding cafes to sip a latte macchiato, to enjoy the sight
of more or less wide-awake faces scurrying around everywhere and admit to yourself: “The
»It´s about Fashion«,
says the gallery owner, Natalie Viaux,
and sells the Vogue on the wall.
The architect‘s office, Abcarius & Burns, has produced one of their most
minimalistic, futuristic, airy buildings in the street parallel to Linien-
strasse famous for its art scene at house number 12. Right next to a large
number of studios and shops that are meant to be coming, the restrained
building characterised by its clear-cut shapes, large areas of glass and
airy construction offers ideal conditions for displaying expressive works.
The young gallery owner, Natalie Viaux, has made use of this building
and in the rooms on the first floor and in the basement has opened a new
chapter in the Berlin art landscape with the second branch of her fashion
photography gallery.
Thousands and thousands of photos rush through the specialist maga-
zines and publications. A short-lived glance at the sometimes breathtak-
ingly beautiful, intelligent compositions and the inevitable end as waste
paper are normally the stages in the short life cycle of these works of art.
For a long time the status of fashion photography was not clear. Many
still consider it today to be a pure product of the advertising and news-
paper industry, but an increasing number of collectors, art and fashion
fans, private individuals and professionals see it differently. Fashion pho-
tography is normally commissioned photography. But the more freedom
the photographer has, the nearer the result comes to art.
Kunst.
The majority of readers flick through it, enjoy it and throw it away. Others
fall in love and would like nothing more than to be in possession of one
of their favourite pictures. Before the Galerie Viaux was opened there
was almost no opportunity to buy contemporary fashion photographs.
Viaux‘s personal passion for fashion photography inspired the former
MTV editor to create a forum for this art form. And since 2003 she has
been the first and only gallery owner in Germany to offer fashion photog-
raphers the opportunity to display their published works and interested
collectors the opportunity to buy limited editions of the Newtons of to-
morrow still at reasonable prices.
On display are large format, high quality prints of particular personalities and
themes. Because obviously the gallery doesn‘t display any product illustrations.
Particular attention is paid to the fact that they are special productions that ide-
ally tell a story. Some of the photographers who have exhibited here and thus
whose photos can be obtained from the gallery are international great names
such as Philippe Cometti, Robert Nettarp, Stefano Galuzzi, but also newcomers
and up-and-coming talents such as Alexander Gnädiger or Jean Francois Carly,
whose realistic and at the same time charmingly beautiful, multi-faceted set-
tings we are allowed to feature with the kind permission of the gallery and the
artists on the following pages.
Ausgestellt werden großformatige, hochwertige Abzüge besonderer Per-
Rainer Bormann was born in the Berliner Charité, grew up in
Germany and Tunisia, studied in Paris at the Institut d’Études
Politiques and started a career as an investment banker in
London. Since the age of ten, he has moved home a scarcelycredible
19 times! His travels ultimately took him back to his home city where he exchanged
the trade with shares for something much more substantial.
INTERVIEW Stephan Burkoff PORTRAIT & FOTO Christian Brox
In the midst of a career in investment banking, you sud-
denly decided to become a real estate developer - can
you tell us why?
I had already worked with shares for many years and I simply re-
alised at some point in time that it wasn‘t really fulfilling. On the
other hand, I had the opportunity to learn a lot about the Asian
capital markets and they have major interests in real estate.
Real estate also interested me personally and it wasn‘t so far
removed from what I had been doing. Real estate has something
that you can grasp - and it lasts - and through real estate you can
play an active part in shaping the lives of others and that in turn
makes it a part of the social structure. That‘s a good thing on the
one hand, but it also involves a lot of responsibility as well.
How do you handle this responsibility?
Well, there are the social and ecological aspects of course. We
also want to create something special, something that com-
municates with its environment and makes people happy.
That‘s why we work with some of the world‘s best architects.
What does this specifically mean as far as your projects
are concerned?
We don‘t see real estate development as a fast cosmetic job
and a quick sell-off of objects, quite the opposite, in fact. We
are interested in retaining our developed objects or at least
part of them ourselves. The fact that we renounce exit strate-
gies naturally brings with it a more durable treatment of exist-
ing substances and a more exact analysis of objects and sites.
That‘s why we decided to focus our main Berlin projects in
Prenzlauer Berg and the Centre - two locations in which we
see a lot of potential which we would like to promote.
ThE DEVELOPER
In Mitte you‘re realising one of your favourite projects as we speak - the
“Fehrbelliner”. What are your aims here?
In the case of the “Fehrbelliner”, we‘re developing a standard which doesn‘t as yet exist
in Berlin. In close cooperation with the architect Eike Becker, we have succeeded in mak-
ing dreams come true - dreams that we‘ve had for a long time now.
We asked ourselves: What has always been lacking?
What did we always want to realise in a project? A roof garden with a view of the whole
of Berlin? We have it. Can we grow fruit there? Yes, we can. In Berlin you must have the
confidence to dream. The city needs that: the courageous implementation of big ideas.
What’s your personal image of Berlin?
Well, Berlin is of course my home town. I feel at home here. But apart from that, Berlin
has for me a dynamic zest which I haven‘t felt in any other city – and it springs from
many sources. Firstly, because Berlin is emerging from a crisis and when you overcome
a crisis, there is always pent-up energy released; and then there‘s the city‘s special his-
tory, which is also responsible for bringing a multitude of young, creative persons here
- and they‘re providing a tangible drive.
As a meeting place, you suggested Haus Cumberland on the Kurfürstendamm in
West Berlin. What links do you have with this building?
Haus Cumberland is one of the largest and most important undeveloped real estate
projects in Berlin. As CEO of Orco Germany I‘m delighted that we were able to acquire
this unique object, after a long and difficult bidding process.
Why were you so interested in this house?
It was built in 1911 by Robert Leibnitz as a luxury boarding house, but it went bankrupt
soon afterwards. Since 1936, this magnificent building has been home to many gov-
ernmental departments, the last one being the Regional Tax Department. Today the
building is in a kind of “Sleeping Beauty” trancelike state. Much of the old and beautiful
has been preserved however - and then there‘s its location in the direct vicinity of Gucci,
Chanel and other luxury businesses and its almost unbelievable
size of 30,000 square meters - all this makes the Haus Cumber-
land a really exciting and extremely important project for us.
The Haus Cumberland will give Berlin a whole fresh momen-
tum. That‘s what I find so wonderful about Berlin - it continually
finds itself anew.
What, in your opinion, is the difference between Berlin and
other European cities?
If you want to set something in motion in London or Paris, you
have to belong to the right clubs and societies. In Berlin, you
just don‘t have bogged-down structures like that. About a third
of the population has changed since the wall came down and
that‘s why Berlin is above all trademarked by a generous trans-
parency. If you have ideas here, and you go to someone and
speak frankly about them, you‘ll be met with frankness.
Immobilienentwickler entschieden, verraten Sie uns, warum?
Many original details from the time of the founder have been preserved in the
Haus Cumberland on the Kurfürstendamm in West Berlin and today these help to
shape the representative style of this property.
Andererseits
Mr. Bormann, thank you for talking to us.
In
Berlin muss man sich trauen zu träumen. Das braucht die Stadt: große Ideen mutig
umgesetzt.
vorgeschlagen. Was verbindet Sie mit diesem Haus?
enprojekte in Berlin.
Weshalb waren Sie gerade an diesem Haus so interessiert?
wichtigen Projekt. Das Haus Cumberland wird den Berliner Wes-
ten ganz neue Impulse geben.
Will man in London oder Paris etwas bewegen, muss man
den richtigen Clubs und Tischrunden angehören. In Berlin
Tower in Warsaw, which architect Daniel
Libeskind designed for his home town. With 45
storeys and a height of 92 meters, this building
will be a landmark in Poland‘s capital city.
There is scope here for an individual to fulfil his life‘s dreams which is
not possible in any other city. A new part of Berlin arises with each of these
dreams that becomes a reality.
Berlin offers unique opportunities to realise unconventional
building projects. Its big city composition and the stock of
substantial old buildings makes the Mitte district first and
foremost an inspiring area with scope to develop trendset-
ting living concepts. If there were still individual or alterna-
tive living and working space models at the beginning of the
90‘s, the Mitte district of the 21st century is driving the trend
to more quality. And luxury. With the “Fehrbelliner” devel-
opment we have a project that will set the benchmark for
international architecture and design quality.
A refuge of contrasts is going up behind the traditional
Wilhelmina front-facing houses screened by Fehrbelliner
Strasse. The contrast between elegant houses and moribund
industrial architecture is sharpened by new amorphous ar-
chitecture. A large number of products is arising from the
contrasts of buildings: Flats, Lofts, Townhouses, Penthouses
– all for sale in five different styles or fitted out to your own
individual design. But only in exchange for a great deal of
money. But the return for the high investment is all sorts of
luxuries: There will be a whole range of features and services
on the roof spaces, open areas and spaces that are being
created – from allotments on the roof to the exclusive spa
and wellness area.

“For me, the ´Fehrbelliner´ Townhouse is a place for the whole family: with the
smell of rosemary and freshly-baked rolls, the sound of table places being laid and
voices from the garden - it feels just like Sunday in the country.” Eike Becker
The residential concept of the Townhouse is geared to cosmopolitan families with
children - families who value the quality of life in Mitte and want a home of their
own. As the owner of a “Fehrbelliner” Townhouse, you‘ll have your own garden,
parking facilities with direct access to your house and your own large roof terrace.
Living and kitchen areas are separated from the private sleeping, working and bath-
room areas - all distributed over three storeys. The Townhouse thus offers each
family member privacy and enough space in generous, open spaces.

Flats
fLATs
“This is contemporary living in traditional style. In a ´Fehrbelliner´ Flat, high rooms
and large windows create an impression of airiness and open spaces. Add to that
an interesting view of the luxuriantly planted street – big city life par excellence.”
Eike Becker
The Flat style - a true gem for lovers of contemporary originality. It symbolises the
invigorating, characteristic style of Berlin residential culture and at the same time
the quiet old-world charm of the original. With its extremely variable distribution of
space, the flat offers you starting points for flexible planning options and enough
room for generous living designs. The flat‘s various residential models make it is
ideal for singles, couples or the smaller family. Open-plan or closed-type kitchens
and ceiling heights of up to 3.35 m provide you with your own personal freedom in
the heart of the city.
LOfTs
“The lofts give you bricks that evoke the memories of a hard past, steel beams and
cast-iron supports, crackling fires and lots of room to be with your thoughts.” Eike
Becker
The Fehrbellliner Lofts are as different as human beings themselves can be. The
most diverse situations life can bring can all find a home here. Thus the Lofts offer
different designs for the space that meet the most varied demands. The Lofts offer
the greatest amount of individual freedom because of the excellent way the space
is divided up and the great flexibility. A valuable added extra to the loft flat: an al-
lotment garden up on the roof, where you can enjoy the Berlin air and sunshine at
any time of day.

“For me living in a ´Fehrbelliner´ Penthouse means: opening the doors, going out
on to the terrace and feeling a summer breeze on your skin – just at the moment
when the city melts into an endless number of lights and reflections and the day
quietly passes into night.” Eike Becker
The Penthouse gives you pure, unadulterated luxury. The 360° all-round view from
the roof terrace alone, with the whole of Berlin sprawling below gives you the impression
of floating. Large glass areas on the 6th storey provide a feeling of spatial
freedom and a view in three different directions. The private sleeping, work and
bathroom areas are situated on the lower level of the penthouse – above that you
have the living and kitchen areas. A fireplace provides the “I’m home” touch.

spa & wellNess
An exciting day in the city calls for physical and mental rest. “Fehrbelliner” residents
don‘t need to set foot out of the door to do this. There is a spacious fitness and wellness
area in the basement for rest and relaxation. The spa has a heated 20 metre indoor
pool with integral child area, three saunas (1 Finnish, 2 steam baths) and a gym. A mas-
you can take the lift directly to a sun deck to end the evening with the sunset and enjoy
the sublime view over the city.
Contemporary living doesn‘t only include state-of-the-art architecture, design and
service but also correspondingly progressive ways of dealing with environmental
resources. A modern CHP unit with increased use of the primary energy used
provides the “Fehrbelliner” complex with heat and hot water. An energy-saving
method of building and insulation further reduce energy losses. In order to save
our most important resource, drinking water, an ecological waste water system
feeds the sanitary facilities with waste and rain water. The roof is partially planted
which is good for the climatic conditions in the building. Parts of the plot are not
sealed so that rainwater can flow off naturally.
Zeitgemäßes Wohnen beinhaltet neben State-Of-The-Art-Architektur, Design und
die Stadt zu genießen.
Even if Mitte were not so full of beautiful parks, there is nothing better than your own
private piece of green in the city. Therefore, 23 allotments have been integrated into the
space on the roofs of the “Fehrbelliner” building complex. A unique idea in Berlin that has
only been a feature in New York or London up till now. These roof gardens, whether they
are used for growing fruit and vegetables or as small, green oases, provide a breathtaking
view over the roofs of the city.
Jany Tempel is a genuine Berlin type. When the wall came
down, the acting career of the true West Berliner began in
the East of the city. Today she has two children and lives in a
chic roof apartment not far from Kollwitzplatz. As her particular creative mixture of acting,
producing, script writing and photography finds its expression in Berlin, she kindly talked
to us in the beautiful Veteranenpark.
INTERVIEW Stephan Burkoff FOTO Konstantin Tempel
Is the united city of Berlin as inspiring today if you‘ve known it for years?
Yes, for me, this energy can be felt everywhere more and more every day. It can
also be small things. For example, I still remember the first time I saw a sofa outside
a cafe on Kastanienalle. These are things that only really happened in Berlin. Small
things but significant for the city and its character.
What influence do such experiences have on your creative work?
In this, I feel like a medium that receives influences, evaluates them, processes them
and converts them into output again. In the case of the sofa, for example, it could
be that in a role as an actress, I am trying to convert this specific feeling of freedom
that leads to putting a sofa on the street. I also think that any creative person would
do that.
But today you‘re known more as an author, director and photographer rather than an
actress. What is the difference between working in front of and behind the camera?
As an actress you can always be attacked directly. Criticism always has a very strong
effect on you personally. For example, if someone says, you‘re too fat, that‘s a very
personal matter. But if you talk to somebody else about an idea for a film or a photo
and receive negative feedback, you can always say that you just had different opin-
ions. It‘s less trying and doesn‘t hurt so much.
What projects do you have on the go at the moment?
I‘ve just finished shooting my cinema debut as a director with my fabulous producer,
Martin Lehwald. Its working title is “Die Grossen Lügen” (The big lies). It is a story
about the hope for love. A hope that always ultimately dies and also that when you
always just try to pursue your dreams without realising that things can change too,
you can quite soon come a cropper. Incidentally, we made the film here in this dis-
trict. And also the story has a lot to do with life in Berlin.
In what way?
Not least because of the protagonist who leads a typical Berlin life within her social
circle and works in a boarding kennel, tries to make her dreams come true and
makes her way through life with her best friend, a long-serving waitress. The link to
Berlin emerges in the film because of a particular, architectural view. It matters to
me to show details, colours, moods, particular viewpoints – all these are my way of
showing this district as it actually is, poetic, beautiful and
sometimes even genuinely melancholic.
What makes Berlin stand out for you as a place where
you can create?
Above all the dynamics, the distinctive talent for improvi-
sation and the idealism that can be found here. A low
budget project such as our film, for example, can actually
only come to fruition if you have the chance to access pro-
duction resources, locations etc. quickly, easily and with-
out a lot of bureaucracy and without always having to get
your cheque book out. In Berlin it‘s simply very easy to find
people who are ready to co-operate with projects even if
there‘s nothing in it for them and also to look for uncon-
ventional ways.
What makes Berlin stand out for you as a city to live in?
Berlin is my home. And I think that unlike other cities, here
you have the opportunity to come into contact with other
people very quickly. If you go into a cafe here, people are
sitting all over the place with their laptops on the tables
– each of them alone and at first glance somewhat lonely
– but often it‘s enough to have a hole in your trousers in
the same place, to smile about it and perhaps shortly get
into a conversation. What makes Berlin, and above all Mitte,
for me is, therefore, not least the openness of its inhabit-
ants.
delt.
All portraits were done by a photographer
who is on exceptionally intimate terms with
Jany, her ten year old son, Konstantin. We
don‘t only think they are well done, but they
are also a good example of genetics.
Leben in Berlin.
Inwiefern?

All sorts of people meet in the new open air
restaurant in the Ballhaus courtyard. Here sit 21st
century patrons surrounded by crumbling house facades and graffiti eating Neopolitan
stone over pizzas, a microcosm of the Mitte district.
If a trademark has emerged from Berlin‘s massive rate of building in the last few
years, it is the masterly combination of old and new. We only have to think of the Re-
ichstag dome or the old Kaisersaal in the modern Sony Centre. The two experienced
event organisers, Christian Schulz (35) and David Regehr (37), also had this maxim in
mind when they took over the most famous and oldest Ballhaus in the city eighteen
months ago.
Many people feared that converting the legendary “Clärchens Ballhaus” into a
soulless, trendy night spot would end almost 100 years of tradition, but the two
young men have succeeded in creating an appealing synthesis between the as-
sets of the past and modern ideas. Above all there turns out to be a charming
contrast in the new open air restaurant outside the traditional house. The patrons
sit in their 21st century clothes, in the candlelight, surrounded by the crumbling
house facades, graffiti, old garages and the oleander bushes in full bloom, eating
Neapolitan stone oven pizzas served by waiters dressed
in 20‘s style clothes.
In the Ballhaus itself the good old times can be felt even
more strongly: Original tables, chairs and bars from 1913
make it very easy for you to imagine the great parties of
the wild 20‘s. But even this has been given a bit more piza-
zz. Currently the 20‘s events only happen at the weekend.
On the other days many different, young customers whirl
around the floor to the rhythms of swing, jive or the tango.
As an alternative to the increasing number of new minimal-
istic bars, cafes and dance bars, perhaps old-fashioned flair
is, today, chic enough for the new Mitte district.
ART In MITTE
The area around Linienstrasse has been an Eldorado for art collectors since the fall of the Berlin Wall. All
kinds of paintings, sculptures, installations and photography can be found in more than 150 galleries.
We visited three favourites and summarised the rest, which are no less interesting, in alphabetical order.
GALERIE EIGEN + ArT
The gallery owner, Gerd Harry Lybke, started
small: first of all in Leipzig (1983) and then in
Berlin (1992). He was the first person to open
a gallery in what is today the art mecca – Berlin-Mitte.
Today Eigen + Art is one of the global
players. It is mainly the artists Neo Rauch,
Rosa Loy, Tilo Baumgärtel and Tim Eitel from
the famous “New Leipzig School” that today
shape the international reputation of Eigen
+ Art. Apart from the plastic arts there are
also photograph and installation exhibitions
to visit.
C/O Berlin is currently one of the most popular
places to go in the Mitte gallery area. With its pho-
French film star, Isabelle Huppert,” are big sellers.
As well as exhibitions, C/O Berlin runs a varied
accompanying programme with lectures, guided
GALERIE FAHNEMANN
For 25 years the gallery owner, Clemens Fahnemann,
has had a good feel for abstract modern
art. Under his guidance artists such as
Hans Hartung, Raimund Girke or Imi Knoebel
have become stars of the art world. With this
success behind him, junior manager, Jonas
Fahnemann, started up another spin off. Using
the same exhibition rooms, the Fahnemann
junior project was established as an address
that was just as well known for young up-andcoming
artists. Amongst others the German,
Jorinde Voigt, the Brazilian, Lina Kim, and the
American, Frances Scholz, had well-attended
exhibitions.
Mit diesem Erfolg im Rücken hat Juniorchef
Jonas Fahnemann einen zweiten Ableger ins
Leben gerufen. Die gleichen Ausstellungsräume
Mr. Becker, you worked for Norman Foster and richard rogers in London before
you set up your office in Berlin. What brought you to Berlin of all places? Was it
the euphoria of reunification?
Not only German reunification but also the expansion of the EU turned a great deal
of things upside down. To experience these revolutions right in the epicentre of
developments, i.e. in Berlin, was, and still is, real living. This openness and inspira-
tion magically attracts creative people. The city is full of wonderful people ... and in
Berlin there‘s still lots of room for something new.
When you embark on your projects you establish that you will keep trying to
find new architectural solutions, even with such supposedly conventional build-
ing projects as building flats.
Our clients and ourselves are constantly looking for better schemes and designs
that find expression in creations full of character. It‘s only with better solutions that
you can stand out from the run-of-the-mill.
How important is innovation for you?
I think, basically, that we can improve people‘s lives by what we do. That is our great
motivation. Here my idea of innovation goes beyond pure innovation of design or
technology and aims at solutions in terms of content. What matters to us is nothing
less than new ideas for urban life.
In what way?
Whether we‘re building offices or residential accommodation, we maintain that
more and more we are creating buildings with a village feel. Where earlier it took
hundreds of years for a village to evolve, today they are being built in a few years. In
spite of that they have a social life and a feeling of community. People feel at ease
with each other and with the architecture surrounding them.
Is there a secret recipe for this?
No. It can only be created if you give a lot of serious thought to what people really need.
Where do people get together, where can they meet each other, where can they share in
other people‘s lives but also where can they retreat to, where can they live their private lives,
where can they work in peace? All our projects take just these questions into account.
ThE ARChITECT
Eike Becker and his partner, Helge Schmidt, run one of the
most successful architects‘ offices in Europe. A large number
of prizes, awards and exhibitions document the success of
Eike Becker_Architekten. With the “Fehrbelliner” Höfen, Eike
Becker is realising his personal dream project. In an interview
he revealed what architecture must achieve today and how you manage to create an
environment where people will also feel at home tomorrow.
INTERVIEW stephan Burkoff PORTRAIT Christian Brox
How do you think the relationship between living, lei-
sure and work will actually develop in future and how
will you react to this in your projects?
We are experiencing more and more the merging of these
different environments. This can be seen already very clear-
ly today particularly with work and home life. One reason for
this is that work today has a different status from what it
had a few years ago. Today people are trying to create more
personal space and to link all areas of their life as sensibly
and inspirationally as possible. In our latest project in Ber-
lin, the “Fehrbelliner” complex, we have the best conditions
for such a modern way of life. Living in a one room 34 m 2
apartment, working from a 400 m 2 house with a view over
Berlin, very high ceilings, large bathrooms, a combination of
a hotel and home – we have developed 80 different types
of residential accommodation suitable for the most varied
requirements with lots of space to sit and think on your own.
Because the people living in the “Fehrbelliner” complex will
be as diverse and varied as Berlin is.
beitet, bevor Sie in Berlin Ihr Büro gründeten. Was brachte Sie ausgerechnet
Genau diese Fragen durchziehen all unsere Projekte.
