ANNUAL REPORT

MESSAGE FROM

THE HEADMISTRESS

Dear Sacred Heart Community,

As we prepared our 2019-2020 Annual

Report, we were continuing to adjust to

the Coronavirus Pandemic that stunned

the world in the second half of the

2019-2020 Academic Year. “Ongoing”

best describes our diligent approach to

keeping our community safe.

On Saturday, June 13, 2020, we held

impressively creative graduation

ceremonies in the Patricia Donnelly

Courtyard. Absorbing the moment

before beginning, I stood in the

middle of that empty space looking

up at our graduates with their families

in the windows of the surrounding

classrooms similar to skyboxes

at an arena, and I thought of the

preparation they received for a future

we cannot begin to imagine. Filled

with pride in them and in all of their

teachers through the years, a few tears

slipped down my cheeks. One at a

time, members of the Class of 2020

entered the courtyard in full cap and

gown to be lauded for their various

contributions to our community - be

it service, faith, leadership, artistic

or athletic talent, and/or academic

accomplishments. Even with the

many challenges of the pandemic,

our faculty, staff, administration, and

Board of Governors are dedicated

to providing a quality and relational

Sacred Heart education for our

students.

It is important in this Annual Report to

celebrate the whole 2019-20 academic

year, not only the final life-altering

months. It was the year we submitted a

proposal for a community solar project

and won the right to develop a triplewin

for bursary students, our academic

program, and the environment! We

rebuilt, insulated, clad, and painted

the south wall of our historic building

- a major and important undertaking

that will last for years to come. Our

senior boys soccer team earned a trip

to the Provincial championship where

they took the title! We celebrated the

overachievement of our Dare to Be

Campaign which raised $6.3 million. Sr.

Suzanne Cooke, RSCJ led our annual

employee retreat that focused on our

Sacred Heart mission in today’s world.

And when the reality of “today’s world”

1

SACRED HEART SCHOOL OF HALIFAX ANNUAL REPORT 2019-20

radically shifted on March 13th, we

became the first school in Nova Scotia

to announce that as a precautionary

health measure we would shift to

remote learning. Consistent with our

mission, our teachers and parents

worked together; we super-charged

our innovative use of technology for

learning, and through the surreal

COVID19 experience in the spring

of 2020, we remained focused on

those constant, certain, unchanging

elements of faith, hope, and love that

frame our purpose and call us to a

relational approach to education.

We are deeply grateful to all of you -

our faculty, staff and administrators,

Board and committee members,

students and alums, parents and

grandparents, parents of alums, RSCJ,

and friends! You are true to the values

we hold dear. This Annual Report

demonstrates that we go forward -

united in prayer, gratitude, and love.

Be well, and may God bless you,

Sr. Anne Wachter, RSCJ

Headmistress

MESSAGE FROM

THE CHAIR,

BOARD OF GOVERNORS

It is my pleasure to present my report

on the work of the Board of Governors

for the school year 2019-2020.

Our Board provides insight, oversight

and foresight. This year, we dedicated

time at meetings to learn from a

panel of senior school students who

spoke about what makes Sacred

Heart different and special to them, a

presentation by our Principals on the

Portrait of a Sacred Heart Teacher, and

a team of teachers took us through a

simulation of differentiated instruction.

During our fall retreat we benefited

from a generative discussion on

long-range opportunities and risks as

we seek to fully embrace our Sacred

Heart Goals; we did not, however,

anticipate a global pandemic that

would cripple the economy and

require distance learning for almost

three months.

In October, along with our

Headmistress, Sr. Anne Wachter,

RSCJ, I attended the CAIS Heads’ and

Chairs’ Conference in Niagara, Ontario

and the Sacred Heart Network Fall

Membership and Trustee Conference

in St. Louis, MO.

Canadian Accredited

Independent Schools (CAIS)

Following our thorough CAIS external

review in November 2018, full CAIS

accreditation was renewed. We

received many commendations and

the recommendations put forward

closely align with the strategic direction

of the Board and our operational

priorities. Some of our follow-up reports

were submitted early, allowing us to

streamline those slated for 2020-2021.

Network of Sacred Heart

Schools

Through the Sacred Heart Commission

on Goals process (SHCOG), Network

schools like ours are accountable

to the Society of the Sacred Heart.

In February, our Board had the

unique opportunity for a roundtable

discussion with members of the RSCJ

Provincial Team during their visit to the

RSCJ in Halifax. At our Board retreat,

Campus Minister Moira Schrader

gave a summary introduction to a

new publication called Sacred Heart

Educators: An Orientation to Mission.

SACRED HEART SCHOOL OF HALIFAX ANNUAL REPORT 2019-20

This resource will guide our Board

and school community in our ongoing

process of education to mission. And

on a related note, we took advantage

of a Board development opportunity

hosted by Trustees of Convent of the

Sacred Heart in New York City on the

topic: Catholic-Independent/Sacred

Heart identity/issues of catholicity,

diversity, inclusion, equity. Attending

from our Board were Chuck Ford,

Michael Simms, Gordon Cooper,

Sr. Kathleen Conan, RSCJ, and Joe

Ciancaglini. They were joined by

Director of Advancement Miriam

Regan and Elementary Principal

Stephen Tugwell. Every 15 years,

the Goals and Criteria are reviewed;

SHCOG led this process for the

Religious of the Sacred Heart and

Network schools with the expectation

of publishing new Criteria in June

2020. We participated in this, and

due to the pandemic, this process

will be completed during the 2020-21

academic year.

Dare to Be Campaign

On October 10, 2019 we celebrated the

success of our Dare to Be Campaign

which raised over $6.3 million to

provide tuition assistance, program

enhancement, unity with the Network,

and campus renovations. This was

possible because of our incredibly

generous community and we are

grateful to our dedicated Campaign

Cabinet. On behalf of the Board I share

our heartfelt thanks to our Honorary

Co-Chairs, Margaret and David

Fountain, Co-Chairs, Robert Barbara,

Lois Dyer Mann, and Veronica Lawen,

and Cabinet Members, Kim McCrea,

Anna Stuart, Angela Surrette, Sr. Anne

Wachter, RSCJ, Miriam Regan, and

Renée Fournier.

Facilities Committee of the

Board

Our major project this year was to

restore the back wall of our historic

1850 building. We swiftly addressed

new water quality guidelines with

testing and filters. Our Board adopted

a new Risk Management Policy,

operationally the Director of Finance

and Administration shepherded

a comprehensive ongoing risk

assessment and review process,

and the Director of Facilities and IT

revamped the Occupational Health

and Safety process, including a full

campus safety audit.

In November we learned that our

bid to the Nova Scotia Solar for

Community Buildings Pilot Program

administered by the Nova Scotia

Department of Energy and Mines was

accepted. Our Board voted to support

involvement in this program allowing

the school to generate power and sell

it to Nova Scotia Power for a fixed price

over the next 20 years. The revenue

generated from this project will go

to support tuition assistance. Thanks

to donations from the Religious of

the Sacred Heart and an alumna, the

installation of solar panels will begin in

the summer of 2020. This is a concrete

way to live forward the call of Laudato

Si, spur innovative education projects,

and financially support students at the

same time. We will continue to seek

donations to fully fund this unique

20-year initiative.

Finance Committee of the

Board

The School received a clean financial

audit for the fiscal year ending June

30, 2019. The Finance Committee

continued to share their expertise

with Sheryl Penny, Director of

Finance and Administration in the

ongoing oversight of the School’s

investment portfolio, three-year

financial forecast, monitoring of

enrollment and issues related to the

global pandemic. The Committee

welcomed Marie Reyes, Admissions

Director and Renée Fournier, Director

of Marketing and Communications

to present on local and international

enrollment and marketing initiatives,

and the Committee benefitted from

a thoughtful session on responsible

investing.

Nominating and Governance

Committee of the Board

The Nominating and Governance

Committee prepared the slate of

Board and Committee members for

2020-21, reviewed the cycle of Board

policies, reviewed the Board By-laws

in light of the Act of Incorporation, and

revised the Harassment Policy. Valuing

4

diversity, the Terms of Reference

for the Nominating and Governance

Committee were adjusted to ensure it

is addressed each year. As noted, this

Committee developed a Board Risk

Management Policy and also created a

Volunteer Expense Policy. Preliminary

planning has begun for the 2020-21

Board Retreat. The bi-annual Board

self-evaluation will be conducted

before the end of this academic year.

Planning Committee of the

Board

The Planning Committee continued

to track and report twice annually

on Strategic Plan progress and

the SHCOG Action Plan, and this

Committee shepherded the responses

to our CAIS recommendations.

Suggestions have been put forward

to the Board for consideration of

the timing and development of the

School’s next Strategic Plan.

New Committee of the Board

Focuses on Community

Engagement

As proposed last year, we have

begun to develop a new Committee

of the Board to focus on community

engagement. The vision is for a small

core Committee to be nimble in nature

in order to address certain projects

designated by the Board. Under the

guidance of the Nominating and

Governance Committee, the Terms

of Reference are in process. Work of

this Committee has begun with a few

Board members assisting with the

fund-raising for the Solar Panel Project

and providing support to Marie Reyes,

Admissions Director, on the Strategic

Enrollment Management Plan.

Barat Academy

The Board made a strategic decision

to name our Grades 7-12 girls’ program

after our founder, St. Madeleine Sophie

Barat. Beginning in 2020-21, Barat

Academy of the Sacred Heart will be

used. All in our school community

will honour Sophie Barat’s courage,

strength, vision, and wisdom.

COVID-19 Pandemic

An extraordinary Board meeting was

held with the full Leadership Team

on March 13, 2020 to address the

emerging global pandemic. The Board

supported the recommendation of

management to suspend on-campus

classes for two weeks following

the March Break. A Board Advisory

Committee was formed. Nonnegotiables

became the foundational

principles for discussions and

decisions regarding the operation of

SHSH in September 2020.

Our School’s 2019-20 theme proved

prophetic: Be Curious, Seek Truth,

Take Action. There are no established

best practices for addressing a global

pandemic on the scale of what we are

experiencing with COVID-19. We have

to be curious and creative in almost

every aspect of daily life and in our

strategic outlook. We must address

the many uncertainties by seeking

underlying truths. We have had to act -

our teachers pivoted their methods of

teaching so that Sacred Heart students

could continue learning from home.

Within two weeks of the extraordinary

meeting, our return to having classes

on campus became ‘indefinite’ and

as our world grapples with the many

consequences of this pandemic, we

give thanks for our strong community

and Goals that keep us focused on

what matters most.

In Closing

Special mention is owed to Patricia

Nichols as Recording Secretary

of the Board for her outstanding

service to the School, Board, and

the Committees. I would also like to

express my sincere appreciation for

the School’s Leadership Team for their

tireless dedication and efforts to deal

with the pandemic. What extraordinary

leadership and resolve they have

shown us!

Most importantly, I want to single

out our teachers who have done a

remarkable job navigating our children

and community through the pandemic.

They have led us through this strange

new world of distance learning, and we

are so grateful to them.

Respectfully submitted,

Chuck Ford, Chair

This academic year was one of the most memorable in our long and

storied history. It was a great year, and in many ways it was the most

difficult one ever - it started with a hurricane in the first full week of

school (who will ever forget the dangling crane in downtown Halifax?)

and ended with a global pandemic that required remote learning for months. However, good things can come from

adversity. We learned how to make distance learning successful, that our students are resilient, our teachers’ passion

and dedication knows no bounds, that our community is always there for one another, and that the world will always

need students who want to make a difference. Below are some of the highlights from this unprecedented year.

An Incredible and Daring Community Effort!

In 2015 we dared our community to be part of our School's

visionary future through an ambitious $6M Dare to Be Capital

Campaign. The Campaign was an extension of our motto -

Verax Tum Audax - which calls on us to Dare to be True - and

so we dared to envision an even stronger future based on

three pillars of Campus, Access, and Learn.

Thanks to two incredible lead donations of $1,000,000 each

from Susan & Jon Bekkers and Margaret & David Fountain,

and the generosity of so many in our community, we finished

the Campaign by raising over $6,300,000. As a result of this

success, Sacred Heart now has a new unified entrance, an

incredibly fun and safe playground and front circle area

devoted to our kids, increased Bursary funding to make it

financially accessible for more students who want a Sacred

Heart education, and a program that now includes a robust

campus ministry program, focus on differentiated instruction,

and innovative teaching advancements. In progress are a

serious gender study and global programming.

This success would not have been possible without our

incredible volunteer Cabinet, including our Honorary Co-Chairs,

Margaret and David Fountain; our Co-Chairs Veronica Lawen,

Lois Dyer Mann, and Robert Barbara; and Cabinet Members

Kim McCrea, Angela Surrette, and Anna Stuart. We cannot

thank them enough for their dedication, effort, and passion.

It's an exciting future for Sacred Heart School of Halifax thanks

to our generous donors who dared to be! From the bottom of

our hearts, thank you.

SACRED HEART SCHOOL OF HALIFAX ANNUAL REPORT 2019-20

Our Theme in Action

The School’s theme for the 2019-20 year was “Be

Curious. Seek Truth. Take Action.” It was a call to our

community, but especially to our students, to take the

time and to make the effort to understand the world

around them, to ask questions and search out facts, and

to advocate for justice and to spread hope. This year, we

lived our theme in many ways, some of them were quiet,

and some were especially loud.

Global Climate Strike

Senior School faculty and students joined in solidarity

with thousands in Halifax and hundreds of thousands

around the world as part of the Global Climate Strike.

With signs made from recycled materials, strong voices,

and great passion, we took action.

Understanding the Political

System

In advance of the 2019 federal election, Sacred Heart

took part in Student Vote 2019, a national program that

encourages students to better understand civics and the

electoral process in our country. As part of our curriculum,

and through this initiative, political parties were invited to

speak to our students about their platforms and answer

questions about the political process.

Action, Justice, Hope

We are never far from an organization in need, or a cause

that deserves action given that it’s ingrained in our DNA

(Goal 3 - Social Awareness that Impels to Action). This year

was no exception, with traditional events and activities like

the Terry Fox Run that supports cancer research through the

Terry Fox Foundation, The Salvation Army Angel Tree, food

drives for Feed Nova Scotia, a bake sale and colour day led

by the GSA in support of the Rainbow Refugees Association

of Nova Scotia, and a drive by the Elementary School Social

Action Club on behalf of their charity of choice The Heart

and Stroke Foundation. This year there were also special

efforts to support the wildlife affected by the devastating

wildfires in Australia - our Elementary School Craft Club

spent hours sewing joey pouches, bat burritos, blankets, and

other animal wraps that were all shipped to Australia. And,

in the Senior School, our Grade 9 girls joined forces to make

dozens of customized wheelchair lap-blankets to warm the

laps and hearts of the veterans at Camp Hill.

A Greener Future

In 2019, we partnered with Robb Apold, SHSH Parent and

President of Natural Forces Solar, on a proposal to design,

build, and install a solar photovoltaic (PV) array on the roof of

the School as part of the Nova Scotia Solar for Community

Buildings Pilot Program administered by the Nova Scotia

Department of Energy and Mines in partnership with Clean

Nova Scotia. In November, we got the exciting news that

we were one of the winning bids! The win meant that once

built, the project would be able to sell the PV electricity

we generate directly to Nova Scotia Power at a generous

20-year fixed-price contract. It is a three-fold win for the

School: environmental sustainability, academic content

for classrooms, and revenue generation to support our

Bursary Program. As Sr. Wachter noted, “Our 170-year

history includes a great deal of innovation, and this project

is certainly an innovative way for Sacred Heart School of

Halifax to be part of the environmental change our students

and community are seeking.” Thanks to early fundraising

success, including a kick-off donation from alumna Debbie

Coles ‘76, we are well on our way to implementing a much

greener future.

A Global Pandemic Changes

Our Course

No one could have predicted that the COVID-19 global

pandemic would essentially shut the world down. When

we started our 2020 March Break on March 9th, we didn’t

realize that it would be the last time we would physically

be together for the remainder of the academic year. It

was shocking and scary, and required not just us, but

everyone around the world, to face a very different reality.

New concepts like self-isolation, social distancing, Zoom,

quarantine, and personal protective equipment - or PPE as

it became known - became part of our everyday lexicon. At

Sacred Heart, upon returning from March Break, we shifted

from an in-person experience to remote learning at home.

Of course it was not without its hiccups, particularly in the

beginning, but thanks to the dedication and perseverance of

our teachers, and the patience and good will of our students

and families, we stayed the course with our curriculum

outcomes in place and a commitment to maintaining our

relational approach even from a distance. We were also

reminded how important it is to support and rely on our

community in times of crisis.

SACRED HEART SCHOOL OF HALIFAX ANNUAL REPORT 2019-20

The Pandemic Class of 2020

It’s safe to say that our graduating class of 2020 had one of

the most memorable graduating experiences in our history.

As June approached and the pandemic still raged, we faced

a prospect that many other schools around the world also

grappled with - how to honour the graduates and celebrate

their accomplishments during such an important time in their

lives. Our graduates wanted to be together in some way,

and with a brilliant idea from Vice Principal Pinches that was

developed collaboratively by a host of people, we created

a socially-distanced ceremony for our graduates and their

"family bubbles". It turned out to be a most remarkable and

beautiful ceremony, where each graduate received special

recognition along with their diploma. We were even able, with

a little photoshop magic, to create the all-important class

photos that will be an enduring memory for our graduates

and their families. Yes, it was a challenging end to their

high school careers, but this year’s graduates now share a

connection to one of history’s most pivotal moments and as

a result have a new appreciation for resiliency, determination,

and social awareness.

10

PARENTS' GUILD

The Parents’ Guild, Sacred Heart’s incredible group of

volunteer parents, had a very busy year up to the start of the

COVID-19 pandemic, and even after. Keith Bourne started

his two-year tenure as President with four priorities for the

Parents' Guild:

a) Building Community

b) Fundraising

c) Delivering the Hot Lunch Program

d) Modernizing Governance

With those four priorities in place, and through hard

work, determination, and collaboration, the Parents' Guild

undertook a significant number of activities this year. One of

the most important was the introduction of the New Family

Welcome Program in which current SHSH families hosted

new families in small social gatherings at the start of the

year. This program was an excellent way for new students

to meet classmates, and new families to get to know their

fellow community members. The Parents' Guild also hosted

a slew of other events, including the Ice Cream Social, a

November Parent Social, the CAIS Speaker Series, a January

Bingo Night, and the traditional Pancake Supper on Shrove

Tuesday. They also coordinated very successful fundraisers

including the Christmas Fair, the Hot Lunch Program, and

toque sales.

The Parents’ Guild also undertook a constitutional review

to implement a number of changes including a number of

new role changes and additions, executive member term

extensions, recognition of the Director of Advancement role,

and the addition of electronic records.

As circumstances dictated, the Parents’ Guild ended

the year with a number of their events moving to online

platforms, including the year-end AGM and Volunteer

Appreciation. And yet, community spirit, fundraising totals,

and participation levels were as strong as ever.

ALUMNAE &

ALUMNI

ASSOCIATION

SACRED HEART SCHOOL OF HALIFAX ANNUAL REPORT 2019-20

The past year has been a time of

change and adaptation for the Alumnae

& Alumni Association. The Association

has been implementing changes from

the last AGM, including the decision

to hold fewer meetings and return to

a subcommittee format. We were able

to hold the Second Annual Blood Drive

in November, and hosted the annual

Christmas Wine and Cheese, which

saw many new faces come back to

the School for the first time in years.

However, with the restrictions due to

Covid-19, we had to adapt the way we

do things including the Spring Alumnae

and Alumni Day, which was put on hold

until next year while other activities

went to a virtual format.

It was also decided that since this is a

period of uncertainty, President Ashley

Lowe would stay on as President for the

year and general nominations would

remain on hold until the pandemic is

behind us.

While we are not having in-person

events, we will still be hard at work

as an Association. The Constitution

dictates that every five years it must be

re-evaluated and, if need be, edited

to reflect current needs. That five year

mark is upon us, and as a result, we will

be striking a small subcommittee to go

through the Constitution to see if any

changes need to be made to reflect

our ‘new normal’. Amendments may

be required, and if so, we will inform

members. These changes will be voted

on at the next AGM.

We continue to have an active social

media presence on Facebook, LinkedIn,

and on the School’s website where we

will keep you updated and share Stories

from the Heart. We encourage you to

reach out if there is anything that you

want to share. Now, more than ever, it’s

important to maintain our connections.

in 1985 when the school was incorporated by an Act of the Legislature

of Nova Scotia. The school's auditor is the accounting firm of KPMG.

Global Pandemic: In March 2020, the outbreak of the novel strain

of coronavirus, specifically identified as "COVID-19" was classified

as a global pandemic, which has resulted in governments enacting

emergency measures to combat the spread of the virus.

The measures enacted impacted various areas of revenue and

expenditures for the school. In March 2020 the school moved to an

online learning platform for the remainder of the 2019/2020 school

year.

REVENUE

Tuition revenue represents 91% of the total funds collected by the

school. The remainder is derived from many sources including

supervision, interest, service charges, donations, gifts and many other

such activities.

EXPENDITURES

The school segregates expenditures into three major categories.

Academic items represent 77% of expenses, while building

maintenance represents 9%. Administration and all other items total

14%. Approximately 74% of total expenditures is in salary costs.

CAPITAL ASSETS EXPENDITURES

As noted on the financial statement the school spends significant

resources to renew its capital infrastructure

ASSETS

The school building is leased from The Ladies of The Sacred Heart

at Halifax under a long-term lease agreement. Additions to the

building, including the College Street wing, and Fountain Academy of

the Sacred Heart, and all equipment are paid for and recorded in the

financial statements of the School.

The school has an investment portfolio created from many sources of

which the majority is held for specific purposes. The investment fund

is managed by BMO Nesbitt Burns using guidelines set by the Board.

LIABILITIES & NET ASSETS

Due to the timing of the financial statements and the due date for

re-enrollment deposits, the school receives a portion of tuition

payments prior to the start of the new fiscal year. Those deposits are

included under Liabilities - Advance payment of educational fees.

RESTRICTED FUNDS

Many assets in the investment fund have been donated for various

purposes, including bursaries and scholarships. The value of these

investments is included in Net Assets & Unexpended amountsdesignated

purposes.

FUNDRAISING

This year’s fundraising efforts were on track during the first half of the year,

but played out differently thanks to the pandemic. There were two major

differentiators this year: the cancellation of the annual Bursary Dinner &

Auction and the introduction of the COVID Relief Fund for Sacred Heart

families who were affected by the pandemic. Of course our community rose

to the occasion and through incredible acts of generosity we were able to

maintain a strong level of giving this year. Profound thanks to all those who

made donations and who continued to demonstrate our communal strength.
