GenderThe NAP process provides anunprecedented opportunity toreduce vulnerability to climatechange while also redressingsocial and gender inequalities. Torealize this potential, a genderresponsiveapproach to the NAPprocess is needed.KEY RESOURCEAdvancing Gender-ResponsiveClimate Action ThroughNational Adaptation Plan(NAP) ProcessesWHERE WE SUPPORTED WORK ON THIS THEMEIN 2019-2020Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Republic of MarshallIslandsHIGHLIGHTS FROM OUR SUPPORT• Began rolling out the Toolkit for a Gender-Responsive Process to Formulate and ImplementNAPs, including through a virtual learning sessionon gender-responsive NAP processes.• Provided ongoing technical assistance to thegovernments of Côte d’Ivoire and the Republicof the Marshall Islands to integrate genderconsiderations into their NAP processes andbroader climate policies.• Helped to facilitate a series of regional workshopsorganized by the UNFCCC Gender Team onintegrating gender into national climate actions.WHAT WE’RE LEARNING• NAP-focused gender analysis provides decisionmakers with knowledge they can act on—countriessuch as Kiribati and Madagascar have activelyintegrated the recommendations in their NAPprocesses.• Gender considerations need ongoing focus ascountries turn their attention to implementingadaptation actions—how these actions areimplemented makes all the difference in realizinggender-equitable benefits.OUR CALL TO ACTIONThe enhanced Gender Action Plan under the UNFCCCcreates a strong mandate for gender-responsiveclimate action—NAP processes are a key opportunityto make this a reality by bringing together genderand climate change actors to co-create adaptationsolutions that work for everyone.NAP Global Network 2019–2020 Progress Report | 31
