RULES & RECOMMENDATIONS
When not specified by law, fully shielded luminaires
should be used for regular exterior illumination. Fully
shielded luminaires are constructed and installed in
such a manner that all light emitted by the luminaire, either
directly from the lamp or a diffusing element, or indirectly
by reflection or refraction from any part of the luminaire,
is projected below the horizontal plane through
the luminaire’s lowest light-emitting parts. Following is a
(non-comprehensive) graphic glossary of unacceptable
and acceptable Luminaires for outdoor lighting.
The PHA-ARB recognizes that exterior lighting has an
important effect in creating the right nighttime environment.
The use of outdoor lighting that does not exceed
the recommended levels promotes safety, security and
enjoyment of the properties while helping to protect the
natural environment and conserve energy.
The use of the maritime zone and beach areas at Palmas
del Mar is regulated by US Fish & Wildlife Service
(UFWS) and the Puerto Rico Department of Natural &
Environmental Resources (PR-DNER) under the Endangered
Species Act of 1973, as amended, Title 50 of
the Code of Federal Regulations, Parts 13 and 17, the
DNR Regulation 4860, the PR Law 218 of 2008, known as
the Law of the Program for the Control and Prevention
of Light Pollution, the USFWS Incidental Take Permit
TE85455B-0 originally issued to Palmas del Mar on October
1, 2003, as amended, the Palmas del Mar Habitat
Conservation Plan, September 28, 1999, as amended,
and the Humacao Municipality Public Ordinance No. 31,
October 24, 2010.
Exterior lighting for remodeling or new construction
projects shall comply with these laws and regulations for
the protection the endangered species Hawksbill and
Leatherback sea turtles that nests in the coastal areas of
Palmas del Mar and provide for civil and criminal penalties
for failure to comply with conditions.
The USFWS Incidental Take Permit issued to Palmas
del Mar implements the Palmas del Mar Habitat Conservation
Plan (HCP) for the endangered species protection
requirements contained in the laws and regulations. The
HCP lays out in detail how activities will be conducted
along our coastal areas from a residential, development,
maintenance, security, and recreational perspective.
Beach security patrols enforce compliance with HCP.

Specifically, for the Beachfront Properties the following lighting design regulation that must be followed
to protect the Sea Turtle Habitat during the construction and use and to ensure compliance with the PHA
Habitat Conservation Plan and federal and state regulations:
1. Exterior Lighting Fixtures shall be low pressure sodium
luminaries with 100 watts maximum output, or
equivalent compact fluorescent or LED luminaries
with similar color rendering. Light sources shall be
shielded from view.
2. Keep Permanent Light Sources from directly, indirectly,
or cumulatively illuminating the beach such
that distinct shadows could be cast on the beach on
a moonless night.
3. Use the lowest wattage possible to accomplish the
lighting task of providing safety and security.
4. Use directional luminaries directed down and away
from the beach. Use shields on luminaries to reduce
up light to prevent light from reaching the beach.
5. Use low, louvered bollard fixtures rather than pole
mounted luminaries, where possible.
6. Position luminaries to take advantage of potential
light shields such as walls, buildings, vegetation, etc.
7. Use motion detector switches for safety and security
lights.
8. Plant landscape vegetation as a lighting buffer where

use in nesting areas of sea turtles and
leatherbacks because the light they emit
is AMBER color (that is the shade of light
that the federal government approves
under these circumstances) and prevents
them from becoming disoriented when
they go to lay their eggs in the coasts.
In the same way, they do not confuse the
hatchlings when they go back to the sea.

9. Design and locate parking areas and roadways to
minimize vehicle headlights from directly or indirectly
illuminating the beach.
10. Always restrict vehicles from the beach, other than
security and/or emergency vehicles. Train personnel
using security and emergency vehicles to identify and
avoid nests.
11. Design and locate interior fixtures that will reduce
lights spillage from within ocean-facing rooms.
12. Use interior curtains and/or shutters to reduce light
trespass from interior spaces to the outdoors.
13. Use full cutoff luminaires, low reflectance surfaces
and low angle spotlights where appropriate.
The guiding principles for the best management practices
are Keep it Low, Keep it Long, and Keep it Shielded.
These principles form the basis of all Sea Turtle Friendly
Lighting, and if light does illuminate the beach, they ensure
that it minimizes disruption to nesting turtles and
hatching behavior.
Keep it Low
Mount the fixture as low as possible to minimize light
trespass and use the lowest amount of light (lumens)
needed for the task.
Keep it Long
Use long wavelength light sources (Amber and Red) in
the appropriate lighting wavelength, 580 nm and above.
Keep it Shielded
Fully shield the light so bulbs and/or glowing lenses are
not visible from the beach.

The long awaited Tennis Bar & Grill opened its doors
recently in one of the worst times to open a business
but with a huge success. Volea, the new Bar & Grill at
our Palmas Athletic Club Tennis Center is being welcomed,
not only by the PAC members & tennis players,
but from all the community. This is a magic place,
where you can sit and watch a tennis match or simply

been perfect for these times of Covid and the Volea
administrator have been very good about following the
Executive Order and the health protocols. This is definitely
good news for our community. Fernando José
Rivera, the chef, comes with years of experience and a
very successful background in the restaurant business.
We learned that Ferando has always been passionate
about cooking ever since he was a young boy, helping
his grandmother in the kitchen creating dishes. After
working in restaurants in Puerto Rico, he began his
studies in 2004 at Johnson & Wales University in Rhode
Island. Upon graduation in 2009, Fernando José began
his journey working in restaurants around the world in
such places as Singapore, Bangkok, and Spain, where
he worked at the famous restaurant Ramiros in Valladolid.
Upon his return to Puerto Rico, Fernando realized
his longtime dream of opening his first restaurant, Bistro
606, in Miramar. In 2013, Fernando opened De la
Vida Restobar in La Placita. As executive chef and administrator,
Fernando has made De la Vida Restobar
one of the most recognized and visited culinary establishments

Hi, my name is Luis Rivera Flores,
Assistant Coach and new member
of the PAC Tennis Center’s
team of Coaches. First of all, I am
grateful for the amazing coaches
and members of PAC and the
opportunity of becoming a Junior
Tennis Pro here in Palmas del Mar.
I have lived in Palmas almost my
entire life, a unique and amazing
community, since I was a little boy
I wondered if I could become a
tennis pro or even play College
tennis, and just about 3 months
ago, I decided to give it another
shot after almost 2 years of not
being able to play. I called Coach William Brown, my
first and actual tennis instructor, to schedule a private
lesson, at the end of the lesson I was thinking about my
path forward, William told me “keep coming, if you are
committed we could develop a plan to get you playing
your best tennis once again, don’t give up”. Right
now, as Coach William said I am in the path to
play college tennis in Sacred Heart University
in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and every day I
become a better player, taking it one
day at a time and enjoying my time
in the court. We encourage everybody,
member or non-member of
PAC to pass by the tennis center and
watch the amazing Tennis Environment
that we, as a team, are building. There are different programs
available, from Red Ball for little kids, Green Ball
for Intermediate players, Yellow ball for Advanced players,
Cardio tennis for Adults, and scheduled private or
group lessons are available for everyone Just pass by
our Tennis Center, and be part of our tennis community,

In April of 2020 a diverse group of professionals came across each other on social media. Each
one had been analyzing different data sets related to the progression of COVID-19 in Puerto Rico.
They started sharing data and collaborating, and by early June they came together as “Task Force Ciudadano”
(in English, “Citizen’s Task Force”) and started publishing their data through a dedicated
Facebook page (taskforceciudadanopr). Six months later they still publish their data every day, and
now run a dedicated website (www.taskforceciudadano.com) and an Instagram account (taskforceciudadano).
Amazingly, they are all volunteers: they receive no funds and get no pay, even though
they have collectively invested to date over 10,000 hours in keeping us informed.
The Citizen’s Task Force does not have a Board of Directors, but is headed by an Editorial Board
composed by original collaborators Bill Burleson (who is a retired logistics manager), Francisco
Colón-Ramírez (an attorney who first studied economics), Dr. Ricardo Jaén (a podriatrist), Dr. Heriberto
Martínez (who has a Ph.D. in chemistry), and Israel Meléndez, an engineer who created the
Covímetro or Covimeter, an innovative metric that measures the changes in the rate of growth of
confirmed cases (and which has been independently validated by epidemiologists, as a tool similar
to “R(t)” but much more straightforward and therefore much more reliable). Dr. Pedro Bustillo, a
physician at the Radiation Therapy and Cancer Institute in Humacao, and Dr. Humberto Lugo, a pediatric
surgeon, also contribute in sharing and publishing data and articles. Many others have also
assisted or contributed along the way. The Covímetro in turn was incorporated into the “Coviboard”,
a risk scoreboard first created by Bill Burleson along with Francisco Colón. The Coviboard incorporates
the Covímetro, positivity, infection rate, and ICU occupation, and gives an overall score. The
Coviboard also reports whether each metric is on the rise, stable or on the fall, and along with the
overall score grades the overall outlook as well. The Coviboard has been shared with the Puerto Rico
Department of Health and the Puerto Rico Public Health Trust (“PRPHT”), and while the PRPHT has
its own similar model which it publishes weekly, the Coviboard is published daily. Moreover, the
Coviboard is the only risk scoring model that not only reports trends, but also scores the duration of
the trend (because decreasing for two weeks straight is much more significant that decreasing for
only three days straight).
With close to 50,000 followers on Facebook, the Citizen’s Task Force is keenly aware of the trust
the public has bestowed on them. Their allegiance is to the data and the science, regardless of
the direction it points in. Their objective is to inform the public of what is really going on, without
nerve-wracking headlines, and help the government navigate the pandemic while protecting the
public health system. They accomplish this in two ways: one, by closely monitoring testing data,
which allows them to anticipate hospital resource (namely ICU) usage, and two, by continuously
spreading the word on the three key measures we can all follow to reduce viral transmission
and disease severity: 1) by using facial masks correctly (using masks without valves,
which do not filter exhalations and therefore do protect those around the wearer,
and making sure they cover the nose, which has a high concentration of ACE2
receptors which are a main gateway for the virus); 2) by maintaining social
distancing, and 3) frequent washing of the hands.
They are all motivated by their love for Puerto Rico, and they are yet
another example of citizens stepping up when a job needs to be done.

As I write this article I
think of the 1,771,329 persons
who died due to COVID-19 as of December 28,
2020 in the world and the 334,361 who died in the United
States. Our generation never thought that this could
happen when there are so many advances in Medicine
that have allowed for the cure of cancers, prolonging
lives, preserving senses such as vision and hearing and
utilizing mechanical devices as joints. The magnitude
of the pandemic prompted several Nations to provide

billions of dollars to develop vaccines and tens of thousands
of individuals all around the planet volunteered
to serve as study cases to ensure the vaccines would be
approved by the responsible agencies in different countries
in record times. We cannot rely on age, race, ethnicity
or even location to decide who will get sick, who will
die and who will recover. The whole world is involved
in vaccination campaigns trying to stop the pandemic
caused by a virus of which we still have a lot to learn and
which continues to mutate and has now a more infectious
strain. The only country that decided to go for the
“herd immunity” has admitted this was a mistake. All this
happened in less than one year…
Every person can use masks, maintain distance from
others and wash and disinfect hands frequently. These
simple measures that may save the life of a relative, a
friend and even an unknown individual Doing unto others
is also valuing their lives as we value ours and without
health, nothing else in life can be fully enjoyed. Working
together we can overcome any obstacle regardless
of its magnitude. Your support and understanding as
we surge forward to bring about important changes and

5G and Fiber Optic Arrive at Palmas del Mar
Dr Sandra Gracia, President of Palmas del Mar Homeowners
Association (PHA) and Mr. Nelson Morales, President
of Digital Assets and Pedro Martinez President of FM
Technology Group signed a contract agreement that will
bring fiber optic and 5G service to the entire community
of Palmas del mar in Humacao, Puerto Rico.
“Since last year PHA has been working hard to bring to
Palmas much needed 5 G technology and fiber optic service
to every home in our community”, said Antonio Maldonado,
PHA Executive Director. This technology being
claimed by our residents and commercial establishments
for years, will speed up communications to 10 times faster
compared to current LTE 4G Network and the current
service thru coaxial cables. Such an advance will unleash
new programs and uses in all areas of communications including
telephone, TV and internet, HD video and mobile
virtual reality with the best and safest technology available
while keeping up with the architectural design guidelines
of the Palmas del Mar community.
For this project Digital Assets is teaming up with FM
Technology Group for this project and have chosen ACS
Contractor, a subsidiary of FM Tech, as the contractor
general for the project. ACS has vast experience in the
installation of fiber optics throughout Puerto Rico. With
the installation of a fiber optic network throughout Palmas
COMMUNITY-WIDE STANDARDS
The Palmas del Mar Homeowners Association (PHA)
Deed of Restrictive Covenants, which apply to every property
within the community of Palmas del Mar, requires that
every owner maintains its property, dwelling unit, residential
lot, commercial unit or commercial lot including landscaping
and improvements in a manner consistent with
the community-wide standards and all applicable laws,
covenants, architectural guidelines, use permits, rules
and regulations. Failure to comply with such requirements
may result in fines imposed by PHA. Additionally,
the Restrictive Covenants stipulate that owners are liable
for any PHA expense related to any maintenance, repair,
or replacement rendered necessary by his act, neglect or
carelessness or by the negligence of any member of his
family, guests, employees, agents or lessees.
As authorized by the PHA Covenants, PHA imposes fines
for violations of community-wide standards and restrictions.
Fines range from $100 to $2,000 depending on
the type of violation, lack of response to previous notifications
of violations or fines and frequency of violation.
Violations include, among others, unkept or lack of maintenance
to patios or lots, lack of property maintenance

will have another alternative for internet access at
unimaginable speeds, and for Cable TV Service including
the typical favorites and local channels. For businesses,
homeschooling and remote working the new fiber optic

we have noticed an increase in residents
taking their dogs with them
while walking and exercising particularly
along the beach. Although
this is a positive trend from a family
enjoyment perspective during the
pandemic, it is generating other

of life perspective as in some instances
residents are allowing their
dogs to run loose and are failing to
pick up their excrement after dogs
perform their biological necessities.
The Restrictive Covenants that govern
the community of Palmas del
Mar specifically state that, “...dogs
shall not be permitted to run loose
and their owners shall be responsible
for cleaning after their pets". It
further authorizes PHA to impose
penalties and fines to violators of
this restriction.
In view of this situation, in collaboration
with many sectors of

important to you but also have become
favorite items among thieves
that may be roaming around you
when you least expect them. Therefore,
whether parked in your office
building, at the shopping mall or at
your home:
our community, we have initiated
a special awareness and education
campaign asking our residents for
your cooperation to set the example
on this matter for the good of
our entire community. In addition,
to asking our people for compliance
and cooperation in this initiative,
PHA has installed at strategic
places throughout our community,
signs and special dog feces deposit
receptacles to further facilitate the
implementation of this program. .

trash be deposited in containers
kept in underground receptacles
or in areas not visible from public
view. Trash collection services will
pick-up the containers from your
underground receptacles or from
your storage areas outside of your
home. If your storage area is inside
your garage, service people are restricted
from going into your property;
therefore, you must bring out
your containers on the same pickup
morning. There is no need for
you to pull trash-bags out of your
containers. Once your trash is taken
away, it is your responsibility
to clean up any items left behind
and to place the containers back
in their respective storage areas or

My husband and I visited Puerto Rico several times
before we made the leap to move. My mother was born
on the island so I grew up with a love for the beauty and
rich culture. Puerto Rico is alluring: the blue turquoise
waters, the uncrowded beaches, the incredible shrimp
mofono and passion fruit mojitos, and the warmth of the
people make it a very special place in the Caribbean.
We explored several communities from Rincon to
Condado looking for the right place to put down roots.
However, when we arrived in Palmas Del Mar, saw the
beautiful gardens, pools, and families happily buzzing
around on their golf carts, we immediately felt a sense of
peace. We loved the idea of walking down to the beach
from our house and dreamt of keeping a boat in the harbor
one day. This was a place we could envision raising
our newborn son.
Palmas is a safe bubble that feels like home with fun
adventures to waterfalls and local restaurants just outside
our gates. What ultimately sealed the deal for us
was getting invited to backyard party and being welcomed
in by an incredible community of people who
loved living here. Belonging to a group of people who
truly care about each other was exactly what we wanted
to be a part of. It’s the kind of community where if your
car breaks down, three people will offer to pick you up.
It’s truly unparalleled.
Now our days are spent going on hikes with friends,
snorkeling, playing pickleball, meeting up for play dates
in the forest or park, or Friday Fun Days at the Beach

Club. Our son, now two years old, has so many children
his age to play with and we’re never lacking in fun

Every morning I watch the sunrise glow pink over the
ocean from my home and I wouldn’t have it any other
way. We’re happier here than we’ve been anywhere
else and know our love affair with Palmas will last a long

The tendency
calls for simple
and clean lines
with intelligent
kitchen
equipments,
less is more is
definitely the
name of the
game.
In modern times, the distribution of a house’s interior has changed. For
years, the tendency is to create open spaces in which public areas connect
without obstructions. The kitchen has become the home’s heart. This very
important space that we dream about must be organized,
functional and esthetic.
The first step to attain a kitchen that we love is to
have a good design. A drawing that includes measurements
and specifications is vital. From there,
you must pay attention to maintaining the required
space between cabinets, between appliances, and
allowing space for circulation.
On occasion, changing the placement of appliances
or the sink is necessary to optimize functionality
and esthetics. For example, if the space allows for it,
we can create a wall of cabinets from floor to ceiling
where smaller appliances like toasters, blenders, and
friers can be stored. This design becomes the action
plan. It will contain the finalized version of all its components.
There are various alternatives for the cabinets. If their construction is entrusted
to an experienced carpenter or cabinetmaker, they are usually fabricated
from laminated PVC panels (high density is recommended). You can
find acrylic laminates in diverse textures, matte or glossy, and colors ranging
from white to neutral to black. This new technology of laminating creates the
appearance of paint. If they are prefabricated in Europe or USA, their composition
is mainly water-repellent panels (medium density fibreboard) with
one or more layers of paint giving them an impeccable finished look. In both
cases, we should aspire to have high quality rails that close with minimum
effort, drawers that hide inside the other, open completely for easy access
and possess internal sections for cutlery and other kitchen tools, well as as
illumination on the aerial cabinets, among other features for comfort.
There is also a new tendency to combine dark and light cabinets for contrast.
The use of wood finishes, dark or light, on strategic places adds a
rich texture giving it a warming and organic touch that is preferred in modern
interior design. At the same time, the all-white traditional kitchen is still
sought after due to its fresh feel especially in beach environments. Another
aspect in demand is the absence of exposed handles to achieve a clean,
simple design where form is favored over embellishment. It is substituted by
a space between doors and drawers, where you can place a hidden or recessed
handle to open and close them. This recessed handle can be selected in
a contrasting tone if you would like to use it as a decorative element, or in a
similar tone if you want it to be disguised.
As you keep working on the design, you must consider the new appliances
to be installed. Oftentimes the design must be altered to allow space for this
new marvel in technology that is offered by modern appliances; it will depend
on the owners and their needs. If they are people that are passionate
about cooking and they like to create elaborate dishes, or if on the contrary,
their use is simple, if there are a few people living in the house or if it’s a big

For some time, we’ve had the option of black appliances for those daring
owners that prefer the nonconventional. Regarding the countertops and the
backsplash, granite was king for a long time. Nowadays, quartz is preferred
because it has options without movement, without streaks, as well as options
with separate streaks simulating elegant calacatta marble; clients can

choose between different levels of gloss. Another, more novel option is (porcelanato)
epoxy resin countertops offering maximum hardness and resistance
to stains, they do not lose their shine, and can also have a matte finish. If the
space permits, an island or peninsula with a protruding countertop to accommodate
stools for fast meals is desired.
If for different reasons the client chooses to not build a new kitchen, a partial
remodel is recommended. If cabinets are in good condition, they can be painted
a different color. If the doors and fronts of the shelves have a traditional
style, the client can choose to update them by installing smoother, modern
doors. Changing older appliances to new, technologically advanced models
can make a huge difference. The same goes for countertops and backsplashes.
Adding illumination, through dropped ceilings (fascia), changing lamps
or adding LED strips under aerial cabinets gabinetes aereos will complete this
fast transformation.

The intention of having a new kitchen with all the modern
updates triggered a complete remodel of this home in
Sabanera at Dorado. The space was extended to house
the new and spacious kitchen. In it we can see the “High
End” appliances, some of them hidden by cabinet paneling.
The refrigerator, freezer and dishwasher are models
designed for this purpose. The design played around
a load column that became an opportunity instead of
an obstacle. The sink’s row was placed on the wall that
leads to the exterior allowing for the backsplash and the
space from the aerial cabinet to the ceiling to be glass,
letting in natural light and offering a view of the landscape.
Next to the kitchen, the family created a dinette
or informal dining area that also connects to the Family
Room, facilitating the family’s flow through their home.
On this example we can see the change of a kitchen
while maintaining its original essence. The space is
lightened by the white cabinets. A cabinet wall was
built to hide small appliances. The refrigerator was
moved allowing for more space on the sink’s row and
the countertops. The dishwasher is hidden behind cabinet
paneling. Illumination was optimized by the addition
of an LED strip under the aerial cabinets. Dropped
ceilings were installed to close the space between the
cabinets and the ceiling, a space that had no particular
function. Different colored countertops are combined,
some white and some black, to achieve a harmonious
contrast of neutral colors. A warming touch is achieved
by the wood finish on the island furniture. Along with
the esthetic change of this clean, modern design, the
biggest reward is having comfortable cabinets that are
organized, and easy to pull drawers to arrange all the
necessary elements.

at home in Palmas is a key mission of
the Palmas Ladies Community Club
(PLCC). Are you eager to meet your
neighbors, develop new friendships,
learn more about Palmas, have some

been actively helping new full-time
residents and long-term visitors to
do exactly that by combining social
events, cultural outings, and charitable
work over our 30-year history.
We are a diverse group of women of
all ages from Puerto Rico, the States
and other countries who have chosen
Palmas as home or home away
from home. We welcome everyone’s
energy, creativity and in participation
organizing special interest groups
and activities and finding more ways
to help make life fun and meaningful
in Palmas.
Providing help to our Puerto Rican
neighbors through a variety of
charitable work has always been
an important mission of our group.
Among the organizations we help
support with food, clothing, and
money are a women’s shelter started
more than 25 years ago by one of our
members, a shelter for abused children,
an orphanage, Casa de Ronald
McDonald, and an “angel” living in
Buena Vista who helps homeless
and less fortunate individuals and
families in the Humacao area. We
also assist local churches including
The Palmas Community Church with
their efforts to feed those in need
during the holidays, and the Palmas
Animal Welfare (PAWS). In addition
to some new fundraising plans, our
annual food drive, “Fill a Bag-Feed
a Belly”, will be coming up in the
spring. With Pandemic restrictions
limiting our fundraising efforts this
year, monetary donations are more
important than ever, but with new
ideas and an abundance of energy
from our “Group Members”, our
work will continue.

and welcome new members! You

I met John Lee Dumas & Kate Erickson a long time after I met
their house. Four years ago, I was looking for a house for the
magazine cover and suddenly, on one of my walks, I ran into
a house that had caught my attention for a while, a very modern
and stylish house with a magnificent view. I immediately
started the investigation on who was the owner and got
his phone number. I then called him and immediately we
clicked. He then told me he was not in Puerto Rico and
was not going to be for two or three months. I was disappointed
because I needed the photos for the edition I was
working on and couldn’t wait that long. I then asked him
if at least I can take photos on the house facade and the
outdoors. But he told me: No! You can go inside and take
all the photos you want and immediately he gave me the
name and number of the person that was taking care of
the house in his absence, he called him and good enough
I got my photos for the cover and for a special report. This
was the October 2016 edition. But the story doesn’t end
there, for that edition I used stock photography models
since they were not home, and I always like a human face
on the cover. Well... what a surprise I had when I finally
met him and found out that the model of the stock photo
I had chosen looked very similar to John, at the point
that, when he published the cover photo on his Facebook
page many friends from the States thought it was him. The
problem was... that Kate didn’t look like the stock photo model and
that created some confusion!! It was so funny!!
Since then we became friends, I met his and her parents and got to
know them better. They are truly a wonderful and fun couple. Not
to mention Goss, the new member of the family…an adorable Goldendoodle.
Thank you Kate & John for being my models and thank you for your
friendship and for being part of our Palmas community. s

Beach tennis, the fastest growing
sport in USA, has arrived at
Palmas and is growing exponentially
as regular clinics have continued
to introduce basic and advanced
technique, scoring, rules,
etiquette and all things related.
It is a fun and awesome workout
that has proven to be safe during
this pandemic, given that measures
are taken to observe distancing
and lack of contact.

Drive through Halloween
As part of the no contact protocol but with the intention of compensating for
the physical estrangement between students and teachers due to the pandemic
and the remote study situation, the Palmas Academy faculty organized a Halloween
drive-through parade where the teachers and school principals in disguise
offered little bags of sweets to the students, who were also dressed up. It was
nice to see the children’s faces when they saw their teachers! Also, to see the
emotion of the teachers to see their students again in person. If you want something,

Hoping that everybody is well and healthy, since the
last time that we saw each other through my debut article
in Live & Life. Hoping that this new year brings us health,
peace and love. The editor of L&L, my sister, encouraged
me to write another article about golf, taking in consideration
that she already decided that the section “From the
Pangolas” was going to be a recurrent column to keep
the golfing community abreast of golf news and golf topics
of general interest.
With the Coronavirus pandemic, our lives have gone
through a rearrangement in all aspects, including the way
we play golf. PAC has established the strictest protocols
for its members and guests so they can enjoy golf in the
safest way possible and keep everyone healthy.
During these last months I have noticed an increase of
Juniors practicing and playing in Palmas; our sport is outdoors,
with little physical contact, you are out in contact
with nature, so it is probably the safest sport to practice
these days in the pandemic.
Juniors always have been a staple of our club taking in
consideration that our resident Pro, Eduardito Figueroa
is committed to the development of our future golfers.
At least 10 Palmas juniors participated in the 2020 Junior
Winter Classic on the 28th & 29th of December on the
Flamboyan Course with great showings.
I raised two boys, one of them pursued the game until
groomed course. Plus, it teaches you courtesy, keeping
quiet while you wait your turn to play.
Golfers are the only athletes that usually root for their
opponent and will celebrate good shots, and more when
you know how difficult some shots are. At the end of a
round you take your hats off and say, “Well played”.
Golf can be a very lonely sport and incredibly stressful
when you decide to play competitive and more when you
are young. You are responsible for the shot’s outcomes,
and at the same time it is extremely rewarding when you
have a positive outcome, it is your accomplishment alone.
Usually you do not have teammates, only when you play
for your school or college teams.
I may be prejudice but I really believe golf is one of the
best sports for kids to take on, the younger the better.
There are many choices out there…but golf is a great
choice that offers a lot of benefits for kids.
Other than school, kids make new friends out on the
golf course learning a new sport with others that have the
same interest. Sometimes, these are friends that last a lifetime.
When you are committed to a sport, you need to invest
time in order to be successful. For kids, being a competitive
golfer teaches them how to prioritize, and sometimes
that means not being able to hang out with friends because
of training or resting up for a tournament. These
are life skills they take into adulthood! I used to love to
hear my youngest son, the golfer, tell his friends, that he
could not go out that night to hang out because he had
a tournament the next day or had practice early the next
morning.
Experiencing the highs and lows of the game can help
kids stay positive and focused on the current shot, “One
shot at a time” forget what happened before and do not
worry about what is going to happen later, just stay in
the present, in order to succeed during a tournament
and finish strong. This is vital for adulthood, when
studying in school, starting a career and making/
learning from life decisions. Play it as it lays, just
like real life.
Golf is a fair sport that gives the same opportunity
to all kids no matter their size, is not like
other sports that you have to a certain height or
size to be able to excel, in golf the size is measured
from the shoulders up. This gives kids from
all sizes the opportunity to play competitive golf and
a good shot to get a scholarship in a good College or
University and even a shot to the PGA or LPGA like our
Rafa Campos and Mari Fe Torres. I know of a lot of kids
that have taken advantage of this and have been able to
go to college for free doing what they love to do.
So, Mom and Dad see your money spent in classes, golf
summer camps, equipment and those long walks following
your kids in tournaments, was time and money well
spent that can save you a lot of money in the long run, in
college tuition.

his teenage years and today he is still a decent golfer that
plays frequently, the oldest one decided to pursue swimming
and he swam competitive until college.
I tried to direct both of my sons towards golf because
I am a golfer and I saw the opportunity to spend quality
time with them on the golf course; it worked in
part because my wife and I divided our time between
swimming meets and PRGA golf tournaments.
In the end it worked beautifully, both of
my sons are very disciplined in taking care of
their bodies and health, by way of being avid
runners and visiting the gym on a regular basis.
Mission accomplished!!!

Palmarina Club!
During the past months, we noticed the Palmarina
Club Condominium has been carrying out a remodeling
and restoration of the areas that were badly affected by
Hurricane Maria.
“As part of the improvements, the affected cement
plaster was corrected, the roofs were sealed, and the
Spanish tiles replaced. The buildings were completely
primed and painted with new colors and we are currently
working on the implementation of the new gardens
and landscaping. The restoration project was excellently
done by Jorge “Yoyo” Rivera, an extraordinary contractor,
and a Palmas del Mar resident,” said Jesus E. (Nesty)
Delgado.
The Palmarina Club Board of Directors has been extremely
energetic and is focusing on giving the condominium
an elegant new image and a refreshing appearance.
The selection of the colors and the new logo was
a joint effort between the members of the Board and
were submitted to the ARB for its approval. The design
of the new gardens is the creation of Chriss Pennock and
George Mulligan and was the product of long hours of
dialogue and study between them and the Board members.
“The new colors, our new logo and the landscaping
will give a fresh and renewed appearance to our common
areas and the complex in general. We want our residents
to fully enjoy our condo, we want to enhance their
contact with nature and promote the use of our common
areas in a safe way. We have been very cautious in
the design of our improvements and in the selection of
the new image that we want Palmarina Club to have. We
want to maintain the elegance and optimal conditions
that we have achieved in Palmarina, so we will keep a
constant maintenance and improvements program that
will help us achieve that goal,” said Jesus E. (Nesty) Delgado,
Chairman of the Board of Directors.
“Palmarina Club has one of the most beautiful and
largest pools in Palmas del Mar, and when you add to
the equation the kids’ pool, the gazebo area, our patios
and play areas, our potable water cistern and the electric
generator for the common areas, we end up with a great
living experience which we enjoy with a high sense of
community. In that same spirit of friendship and community,
at the beginning of our Christmas season a group of
neighbors have come together to decorate Palmarina.
We have to thank Limarie Reyes and Rafael Miranda for
their dedication and effort during the Christmas decoration
process,” said José Rivera, Vice President of the
Board of Directors.

distance from Palmanova Plaza, the Varadero and the
Pescadería, and right in front of the inner Marina. The
condo is composed of 27 exclusive villas with 3 and 4
bedrooms, each one with 2 parking spaces assigned. All

it is extremely safe, and it is a splendid place for raising

Palmas shares adoption stories

Palmas del Mar hosted a beautiful activity titled “Families
that are Born from the Heart”. It was an activity
aimed at parents who are in the middle of the adoption
process. As part of the activity testimonies were shared,
such as Jennifer Valentín’s, a teacher at Palmas Academy
who, after 12 years of marriage, decided to adopt. Jennifer
tells me, “My husband and I had always thought of
having two biological children and adopting a child, but
God did not want it that way.” After trying for 11 years,
they decided to change their plans and adopt first. “The
day we received the call, I was overwhelmed with emotion.
It was a spectacular day; we went and spent all the
money from a gift certificate that I had received on clothes
and toys for the baby,” Juan Antonio Rivera Rivera,
Jennifer’s husband, recalled. She added with a broken
voice, that the day they went to pick the baby up was
really exciting. Funny enough, while getting everything
ready at home before her daughter’s arrival, she broke
her foot so that day she went with her husband to bring
the baby to the new home, she had a black and swollen
foot. Sofia (not her real name to protect her identity) was
1 and half years old, now she is two years old and she is
an adorable and happy girl whom we had the opportunity
to meet at the activity. A girl who was given
a second chance at life (as well as Jennifer and
Juan Antonio) to have a happy life. “I have to
give credit to the Department of the Family and
the social worker Damaris de la Cruz who took
us by the hand throughout the process and still
today gives us support in the challenges we face
on this journey,” Jennifer assured us and urged
the couples who are in the process of adoption
to give up. “The process is long and sometimes
tedious yet it’s very nice and comforting when Sofia
calls us “Mom and Dad”; it is a feeling like no
other.” Juan Antonio apologized to the Department
of the Family for having distrusted them and
having first tried to adopt in the US, Latin America
and even in Russia and China. “The social workers
and the staff of the Department have been really
extraordinary, and the support has been unconditional;
they have been and continue to be with us
on this path.”
As part of the activity there were other exciting testimonies
such as that of a woman who first adopted a
9-year-old boy and then her 14-year-old sister because
his special request for his birthday and Christmas was
to spend time with his older sister until he finally asked
his adoptive parents to adopt her as well…which they
did. And so the afternoon was filled with stories from
the heart as is the motto of the adoption program ...
“families that are born from the heart.”
And as if this were not enough, the activity culminated
with a heartbreaking video of dozens of adolescent
children asking to be adopted. These phrases were
repeated over and over again amongst the dozens of
children featured:
“I would like to have a family”
“I want parents who love me”
“I want to have a home”
“I want a family that loves me and adopts me,
my sister and my brother”
“A family that when I get home
from school asks me how I’m doing”
“I want to have a happy family, a real family”
“I’m looking for a family, because
my family didn’t love me, that’s why
I’m waiting for you!”
“I wish I could have a mom and dad;
I think that’s important”
“I want a family that loves
me and treats me well.”
“I want a family to help me”
“I want a family to take me
for walks and take care of me.”
Thank God I had a mask and
shield that absorbed and concealed
my tears. And today, as
I am writing this article, I find
myself crying again, this time
sitting in front of the computer.
And it is too sad to see
children asking for love. “To
date, 103 children have been
adopted in Puerto Rico, but
there are 176 children waiting
to be adopted. So, if you are
considering adopting, call

said Awilda Laboy, director of the Humacao Family Department.
You will not be alone; I saw the commitment
of these social workers and I felt the love with which
they work. The truth is that sometimes we speak without
knowing! The good people outnumber the ones that
are not! s

For 2021...
Set Intentions Instead
of Resolutions

2020 is long gone. We have welcomed
the new year. So, what now?
We have all fallen victim to the
endless list of nearly impossible-to-achieve
new year’s resolutions
only to realize by June that we haven’t
stuck to any of them. My new
year’s resolutions have often looked
like this: get my bikini body ready for
Summer, read five books, take two
continuing education courses, learn
a new skill, get a new hobby, reconnect
with family members, spend
quality time with my significant other,
complain less, argue less… and the
list goes on. There is nothing wrong
with setting goals, but we often end
up disappointed in ourselves when
we are unable to achieve most of
them. The thing about goals is that
you must hold yourself accountable.
Setting realistic, achievable, measurable
goals, and setting deadlines
while holding yourself accountable
to them is the key to success. Start
by thinking about what you want,
describe and define it in the simplest
terms possible, divide it into sections,
think about what you need to be able
to achieve it, and set deadlines. Let’s
take complain less as an example.
This goal is so broad that you probably
won’t know where to start. Think
about what is going on in your life,
reflect on why you are complaining.
Is there a need that is not being fulfilled?
Are you feeling neglected, rejected,
ignored? Do you need more
help? Are you asking for help when
you need it? These questions are
extremely important in the process
of setting an achievable goal. Maybe
your complaints are telling you
something you have not seen clearly.
A more realistic goal could be: set
a date for weekly (bi-weekly, or even
monthly) conversations with significant
other and/or family to connect
and talk about our achievements, our
needs, and dividing chores.
Now, let’s examine a simpler goal:
read five books. Think about where
the number five came from. Why five?
Why not two or three? What kinds of
books do I enjoy reading? Why haven’t
I been able to complete a book
before? Do I have enough time? What
am I spending more time on? Is it
something important? Can I take time
away from it? Could I make time? Life
gets complicated. Our families, work,
school, friends, and taking care of our
health takes time and effort, and oftentimes,
the moments we have left
we want to spend curled up in front
of the TV, drinking a cup of coffee, tea
or wine. Setting clearly defined, realistic,
short-term goals with deadlines
could be the key to achieving some
of those resolutions you have been
writing year after year.
What if you try setting intentions
for the year instead?
Scrolling through my social media
platforms, I saw a meme with random
letters and some hidden words
(like a word search type of thing), and
the caption read: First four words you
see are your focus for 2021. My words
were: Creation, Connection, Gratitude
and Love. I usually don’t pay
much attention to these things but
for some reason, mainly curiosity, I
did what it asked, and I was pleasantly
surprised. I thought to myself: Instead
of creating another long list of resolutions
(aka disappointments), why not
set an intention for the year? I could
take these four words and make them

into a sort of “mantra” for the year.
Creation, Connection, Love and Gratitude.
These are powerful words and,
if you think about it, they encompass
most of my usual resolutions. I decided
to think about these words every
day of the year and find ways to incorporate
them into my routine.
What do these words mean for you?
How can you Create, Connect (to others
and with yourself), Be Grateful and
Love every day? What other words
can you choose as your intentions?
COVID-19 has certainly changed
our lives and our routines. We have
lost a lot: lives, jobs, important events,
trips, and almost our sanity. A lot of us
are struggling with depression, anxiety,
and burnout. Only some of us are
getting help.
Social media platforms are flooded
with recommendations about how
to cope with the stresses of COVID,
how to stay connected without being
physically present, how to be OK
with not being OK. Along with them,
pressures to exercise more at home,
eat clean, write that novel, be productive,
take a class, learn a new skill,
while dealing with grief, loss, anxiety,
economic problems, relationship
problems, family problems, homeschooling…
and the list goes on. It is
no surprise that most of us are having
a tough time dealing with all at the
same time. Being mom, dad, daughter,
son, sibling, personal chef, maid,
teacher, dog trainer, friend, and support
system, while working full time.
Living in paradise, however, has
helped us retain some sanity through
all of this. If you haven’t, go out and
take advantage of the access to the
beach, hiking trails, delicious restaurants,
beautiful sunrises, and Puerto
Rico’s amazing weather. It is a scientific
fact that exercise and connecting
with nature (while connecting to
yourself) are some of the best natural
antidepressants you can get. Taking
time to focus on those intentions
you set while practicing mindfulness
and meditation (there are some great
apps you can use like Calm and Headspace)
can do wonders for your overall
wellbeing. Incorporating ground-
ing, journaling and gratitude into
your daily routine are just a few things
you can do to help alleviate some of
the pressures of this new reality.
Here’s an example of how you can
do this: try meditating for at least
five minutes when you wake up, think
about the things you are grateful
for this morning (whether it be your
health, your job, your family or simply
waking up to see another day) and set
an intention for the day (e.g. be present,
be patient, be kind). Go about
your day. Whenever you start feeling
disconnected, stressed, or impatient
take a few minutes to practice grounding.
Try going for a walk, even if it’s a
short one. If you can’t at the moment,
try looking out the window. Use your
five senses to pay complete attention
to 5 things you can see, 4 things you
can hear, 3 things you can smell, 2
things you can touch and 1 thing you
can taste. It is natural for your mind
to wander during this exercise. If you
get distracted by something or even
your own thoughts, acknowledge the
distraction and try focusing on the exercise
again. Continue your day. Take
some time to exercise; go for a walk,
run, hike, bike ride or even running
after your toddler would do. Be mindful
while you are eating. Use all your
senses while cooking and enjoying
your meal. Observe and describe the
color, the smells, the tastes; take time
to savor it (even if it is just a ham and
cheese sandwich). When you have finished
your day, take a bath and practice
mindfulness by focusing on how
the water and soap feels on your skin;
try focusing your complete attention
and breathing deeply to let out all of
the stress of the day. Visualize stress
leaving your body with every exhalation.
Right before bed, take 5 minutes
(or however long you feel like) to write
on your journal. Anything, the first
thing that comes to mind. Take time
to reflect on what you are grateful for
today (even if it’s not snapping at your
children or significant other). And if
you feel like it, meditate for a while
before going to sleep.

and search for the help you need.
Maybe that should be your goal for
the new year.
Fortunately, nothing lasts forever.
Emotions and thoughts are transient,
even pandemics are transient. 2020 is
over and 2021 promises a new beginning.
Take advantage of the paradise
you have chosen to live in. Set your
intentions, take a walk, breathe in and
let it all out. And if you need to, ask
for help. There is always someone

When using
the services of
a contractor

Risks and duties of the owner of a
construction project when using the services of a contractor
On June 1, 2020, the Governor of Puerto Rico,
Hon. Wanda Vázquez-Garced, signed into law Puerto
Rico’s new Civil Code which is now in effect. For
those that are in the real estate and residential and
commercial construction business, it is important to
understand a very important provision in the New
Civil Code that regulates some of the risk regarding
construction projects and improvements in residences
and/or commercial projects.
Many of you remember the provision in the P.R.
Civil Code under Article 1489 that reads as follows:
Article 1489. Action against the owner by people
who put work and materials in a job adjusted by the
contractor. Those who put their work and materials
in a job adjusted upwards by the contractor have no
action against the owner of it except for the amount
that the owner owes the contractor when the claim
is made.
Now, in the New Civil Code 2020 this article and/or
provision is found at the end of Article 1374:
Article 1374.- Obligations of the principal.
The principal is obliged to: (a) pay the price of the
job; (b) provide the necessary collaboration so that
the job can be carried out; and (c) receive the job,
when it has been carried out as agreed. Those who
put their work and materials in a job for a lump sum,
have an action against the client up to the amount
that the client owes the contractor when the claim is
made.
Similar to Article 1489, Article 1374 recognizes a
direct action against the owner of a job up to the
amount that he owes “to the contractor” on the date
on which the claim is made. This action can be ex-
ercised by workers, suppliers (of materials), subcontractors,
and third parties who have provided their
services in said job. Article 1374 constitutes an exception
to the general principle of the efficient relativity
of contracts, which postulates that these have effect
only between the grantors and their successors in title,
without altering the nature of the main obligation
between the owner and the contractor.
Article 1374 is created for reasons of equity and in
order to avoid injustices, so that the owner of a job
and the contractor do not conspire to not pay third
parties who contributed their work and supplied materials
or services in the execution of the job.
The application of Article 1374 occurs in the event
that the services
of a contractor
are hired to carry
out an improvement
or construction
in the
home and this
contractor uses
his employees,
subcontracts
to third parties,
and uses the
materials of the suppliers to carry out the jobs
that were contracted to him. However, he decides
not to pay them.
Article 1374 provides workers, subcontractors and
third parties a direct action against the owner of the
job for the amount that the contractor owes them at
the time of the claim, provided that the owner has
not previously paid the amount claimed and has a
balance left, receivable from the contractor.
The Supreme Court of Puerto Rico has recognized
that the third party to whom the contractor has not
paid does not have to show that the contractor does
not have money to respond before the claim is made
directly to the owner of the job. In addition, third
parties become direct creditors of the owner with a
mere claim (a simple letter) addressed to the owner
of the job.
After receiving a payment claim from a third party,
the owner of the job must retain the claimed
payment and may deduct it from the outstanding
amounts due to the contractor, since making the
payment after having been notified of the claim will
oblige the owner to pay the amount to the third party,
even if he has paid the contractor. In addition, if
there is a dispute between the contractor and the
third party regarding the amount claimed, the owner
must record in the courts the amount claimed.
The contracting owner of a job must exercise prudence
and good judgment when hiring who will provide
a service for the execution of an improvement
or work in his home. It is recommended that the contractor’s
history, financial capacity, and claims history
be studied prior to hiring. In addition, regardless of
how simple you think your project and/or improvement
is, it is very important that before any partial
payment is made, to request from the Contractor a
sworn certification and/or affidavit that the Contractor
does not owe monies to employees, subcontractors,
suppliers and/or any other third parties who
may have contributed in some way to your project.
Furthermore, before making the final payment at the
end of the job, the owner must make sure to request
a certification from the contractor through an affidavit
in which he certifies that he has paid all those who
supplied him with labor, materials or services in said
job.

The new BEACH TENNIS court at the BEACH CLUB
Palmas Athletic Club has been hard at work making our tennis center
the top racket sports venue in the Caribbean. Tennis courts are being
resurfaced on a rotating basis. A new hitting wall is being installed
and one major enhancement at the Tennis Center will be the addition
of 4 to 6 new pickleball courts. Pickleball has taken off in Palmas Del
Mar. The Palmas Pickleball Club with over 80 members has been vital
to bringing this sport to Palmas Del Mar. Currently playing at the
courts at Via Franca, Palmas Pickleball club has achieved equipment
sponsorships, brought lighting to the Via Franca courts and more. The
new courts at the Tennis Center will be a welcome addition helping to
further grow pickleball in Palmas and allow us to attract tournaments
to Palmas Del Mar. And a sand Beach tennis Club court has being implemented.
Speaking of paddle sports, beach tennis is growing
steadfastly as not only regular clinics have been offered
throughout the past months, but enthusiastic Palmeños
have acquired and regularly set up their Beach tennis
court systems and play in the area where the old Beach
Bohio used to be. PAC has installed a beach
tennis court at the Beach Club. We look
forward to offering beach tennis clinics
in 2021.

Projects addressing Sargassum Challenges in Palmas del Mar
Sargassum is a floating seaweed that in the open ocean provides an essential
habitat for fishes, crabs, sea turtles, among other species. However,
since 2011, large accumulations of Sargassum on the Puerto Rico’s coast
have become a challenge for managers and citizens with socio-economic
impacts to the coastal communities. These accumulations are restricting
access to boat ramps and beaches, deteriorating the quality of tourism
services, and impacting the coastal ecosystems dynamics. Limited management
strategies or plans exist for Puerto Rico to manage the increase
in Sargassum beach landings despite documented increases in landings
and environmental, public health, and economic impacts.
In response to these challenges, the Sea Grant Puerto Rico Program of
the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez (UPRM) is sponsoring a 2-year
project to address various priorities including: 1) improving scientific
understanding of Sargassum, 2) strengthen and integrate new and existing
Sargassum monitoring programs, and improve their predictive
capabilities, 3) improve stakeholder communications, develop best
management practices and increase understanding of the socioeconomic
and ecological impacts of Sargassum. Two priority sites have been selected
for this project, Palmas del Mar, Humacao, and La Parguera, Lajas.
Dr. William J. Hernández, a researcher from the UPRM, will be leading
this Sea Grant project in collaboration with Mariana León Pérez, a PhD
Candidate at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and other researchers.
“This project is focused on providing baseline information to address the
Sargassum issue in Puerto Rico and with special focus on applications
to management, assessing socioeconomic impacts, and providing best
management practices”, stated Dr. Hernández. Additional goals include
improving aerial observations using drones, monitoring water quality to
measure physico-chemical (dissolved oxygen, pH, and light attenuation)
parameters once the Sargassum reaches nearshore environments, and
sharing the products and information developed for this project through
workshops, webinars, web mapping applications and other distribution
channels. Current efforts are underway to finalize the installation of water
quality loggers and high-resolution cameras to monitor Sargassum in La
Parguera and Palmas del Mar. Dr. Hernández continued, “The support and
collaboration of the community are key to make this a successful project”.
Parallel with this effort, León Pérez is actively working on her dissertation
to assess the vulnerability of Palmas del Mar and La Parguera communities
to Sargassum arrivals. Currently, she is analyzing satellite imagery
to understand the dynamics of Sargassum accumulations in the coast.
This year, she will also be conducting a series of participatory exercises
with the communities to assess the social, economic and environmental
impacts of Sargassum arrivals, as well to identify barrier and opportunities
for the implementation of mitigation actions.
Luis Crespo, PHA biologist, was monitoring air quality in five points
around the Harbor (see attached image). It consisted in measurements
of the two mains gases that are produced during decomposition of Sargassum,
hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and ammonia (NH3). The hydrogen
sulfide is the gas that produce the bad odor like rotten eggs and both
gases in high concentrations are harmful to human health. PHA acquired
specialized and very sensitive equipment that measure both gases in air.
Wind velocity was also measured because it may affect concentration
and dispersal of gases. The data was collected from May to 1st week of
June once a week. Data showed that values for both gases was under or
below the maximum value establish by OSHA as safe for humans. Only
Monitoring points around Palmas Harbour
one value for ammonia was in the critical value and was due to drugging
work performed by a contractor in the flushing channel of the harbor at
moment of data collection. Data was not collected during July because
the instrument needs to be calibrated again in that month. This data is
not conclusive because more data during all the Sargassum influx must
be collected. We have an agreement with a Professor and 2 students from
UPR Humacao- Marine Science Department to take the samples, but due
to Covid 19 Pandemic they were unable to do the monitoring, hopefully
they will do it in 2021. “All these projects will provide science-backed information
for understanding the impacts of Sargassum in Palmas del Mar
and to implement mitigation measures with more chances of success”,
concluded León Pérez.

With this edition we kick off
a new year full of hope. I
think that 2021 will hardly be
able to surpass 2020 in tragedies
and calamities; and
thank God we did not have
a hurricane this past year! It
was a year of great trials and
challenges; of much pain for
all of us because even if you
have not lost a loved one or
have been ill, the collective anguish of that possibility is
seen and felt. We are all more vulnerable and sensitive.
As much as we want the fear of getting seriously ill or
having a loved one get sick and die would go away,
it is always present, no matter how positive we are. It
has been very painful to be away from my daughter
except on a few occasions when we social distance and
wear a mask, mostly because she cares about me since
I am part of that “high-risk population” (well, old lady,
period!). But I worry about her too because young people
are not exempt, many have become infected and
even have died. I try to stay calm, but I am terrified
that something might happen to her--Canceled! And
of course, there are always people who live alienated
from the reality of the pandemic. But, despite all this
tragedy, we cannot complain because I cannot think of
any better place to spend a pandemic than in Palmas
del Mar. In Palmas we have space, clean air, sea, forests,
and walking trails, recreational spaces, and many
restaurants that have served us well. We are also grateful
to Palmas Market, which has always been open and
well-stocked; to Candelero Pharmacy and ECONO for
their delivery service; to many of our Palmeños doctors
who have attended emergencies even in their homes;
also, to our Beauty Salon, Aracelis Salon; to our security
guards and to our Palmas Homeowners office that has
kept on offering services uninterrupted. Despite everything
that is happening, we cannot complain! Let’s
hope that this year we will finally see the light at the
end of the tunnel, but in the meantime, we have to
keep wearing masks and keep our distance until most
of the population is vaccinated. We’re in this together
and together we’ll get through it!
