Open to students entering 9th to 12th grades
Students chose a morning and an afternoon studio for each two-week session from the classes listed below.
MORNING STUDIOS
FIGURE DRAWING & PORTRAITS
9:45 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
This workshop is based on the idea that the human figure is
a gift to the artist. Working from pre-recorded videos and still
images of clothed models, as well as portrait studies of yourself,
you will investigate portraiture and the figure using an array of
drawing materials. You will learn the facets of drawing the figure
by exploring proportion, form, gesture and composition. Portrait
studies are designed to give students a deeper understanding
of human expression. This is an important class for students
looking to enhance a college admissions portfolio! Previous
observational drawing experience is required.
PHOTOGRAPHY ESSENTIALS
9:45 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
Learn the fundamental building blocks of creating a great
photo through an emphasis on light, composition, color, and
tonality. This class will include hands-on shooting assignments
that will introduce digital photography techniques using your
smartphone, as well as an opportunity to work with alternative
photography processes at home. You will learn to skillfully edit
your photos using mobile photo editing apps, and how to best
save and share your images. You will also explore making
photographic images without the use of a camera, using
photo-sensitive materials to create exciting cyanotypes and
lumen prints. Appropriate for all artistic levels.
THE ART OF PUNK
9:45 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
Punk rock gave rise to an art movement that has come to
influence design, fashion, and visual culture around the world.
Through DIY (do-it-yourself) processes adapted for the online
format, students will explore the history and context of this
distinctive aesthetic by way of zine-making, collage and
independent publishing. Students will discover the integral role
that DIY media production played in punk, feminism, and other
anti-establishment movements and learn about some of the
most significant producers working within this realm. Beginning
with the Adobe Creative Suite and incorporating methods on
and off the computer, students will develop skills in typography
and design and digital to analog production methods. This
workshop encourages a spirit of inclusion, collaboration and
self-expression. Appropriate for all artistic levels.
PAINTING AND PROCESS
9:45 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
Learn a variety of playful and academic painting processes
that have been around since the Renaissance and explore
painting with alternative everyday materials. Students will
be introduced to historic and contemporary artworks that
demonstrate how the history of painting and its processes
and materials are relevant today. Spark new ideas about
painting as you learn how to create your own paints and
pigments from household items, such as spices and eggs,
using methods that have existed for centuries. This class
will introduce the formal elements of composition, color and
form through observational painting and demonstrations of
techniques that are foundational to all painting processes.
Appropriate for all artistic levels.
GRAPHIC DESIGN FOUNDATIONS
9:45 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
Graphic design is applied to everything visual, from road
signs to board games. This workshop will introduce the
process of using digital tools to create and combine
symbols, images and text to visually communicate ideas
and messages. By integrating digital photography,
typography and your own illustrations, you’ll explore
fundamental methods and principles. Projects utilize
Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop and develop technical
skills and aesthetic understanding.
