Initial Research
INITIAL RESEARCH
In my initial research I explored different aesthetic and functional problems that arose with coat
stand (how people hang coats, how they interact with them). I then created 3 different mood boards
and corresponding ideations for each board, narrowing my theme down to a simple and minimal japanese
design, targeting brands such as Muji and Mjolk. The environment I want this coat stand to live
is a small condo or loft for a young adult living alone or as a couple as well as fashion forward. This
coat stand would be multi-functional and flat packed. For aesthetics I wanted a light coloured wood
with a simple geometric structure.

FINALIZED RESEARCH
In my refined research I carried out my initial theme direction. I decided to take inspiration from
traditional japanese room dividers because they are a flat packed design that are used to change up
the layout of a home and make a small space look more dynamic and large. It also ties into the
japanese simple design that I was going for. By combining this concept with a coat stand I came up
with a solution that allowed the coats to act as the room divider (allowing the user to decide how
much space is divided). For my prototyping direction I chose the middle concept.

MASS PRODUCTION PLAN
Kōto Kabe is a coat stand that is easy to reproduce. It is made of white
ash, a sturdy hardwood that is easy to get and is on the cheaper end of
most hardwoods. It has 3 hollow silver rods and hardware that are
inexpensive. Its dimensions are simple and use manufacturing
processes that are straight forward (drilling straight holes, installing
butt hinges, cutting half lap joints, etc. ). This coat stand will be
available pre-installed and flat packed, saving money on packaging
and shipping costs. This makes it easy for the client and/or consumer
to transport and set up.
