Athletes off to Colgate Games<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong> youngstersare<br />
primed and ready to compete at<br />
the 43rdannualColgate Games,<br />
the country’s largest junior<br />
athletics competition.<br />
Sometwenty athletesfrom<br />
the <strong>Ashburton</strong>AthleticsClub<br />
will competeatthe South<br />
Island event in Nelson,which<br />
starts tomorrow. The North<br />
Island equivalent was held last<br />
weekend.<br />
Close to 900athletes from71<br />
clubs will run, throwand jump<br />
atthe threedayevent at the<br />
Saxton Field Sports Complex.<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong>Athletics Club<br />
spokesperson AlanaPeck said<br />
club athleteshad enjoyed a<br />
great seasonsofar.<br />
The club had 94 juniors, aged<br />
from eight to 13 years, and 20<br />
would make the trip north to<br />
compete in up to five events<br />
each.<br />
Thoseevents includedshot<br />
put, discus, long jump, high<br />
jump and running events<br />
rangingfrom60m to 1500m,<br />
said Mrs Peck.<br />
Theclub also had six relay<br />
teams entered, includingtwo<br />
medley teams that would<br />
feature two 100m runners, a<br />
200m runner, 400m runner and<br />
800m runner.<br />

for asocialcompetition starting<br />
on February9.<br />
Thecompetition will run<br />
every Tuesday night for a<br />
minimumofsix weeks andis<br />
aimed at regular and new<br />
players to the sport.<br />
Each business team will<br />
consist of three individuals,<br />
one of whichislikely to have<br />
played squash before. Each<br />
team canhave alist of substo<br />
call upon as well.<br />
Therewill be threequickfire<br />
matchesagainst opposing<br />
business team playerseach<br />
weekand competitors willbe<br />
graded accordingtoability to<br />
ensure games are evenly<br />
matched.<br />
The cost of ateam is $120 and<br />
entries closeonFebruary 2.<br />

Busy schedule ahead for rowers<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong> College rowers have<br />
been training hard in<br />
preparation for five regattas<br />
lined up over the next nine<br />
weeks.<br />
Around 25 rowers will<br />
compete at the Canterbury<br />
ChampionshipsatLake<br />
Ruataniwha, near Twizel this<br />
weekend. Two weeks later the<br />
South Island Club<br />
championships willbeheldat<br />
the same venue and then Lake<br />
Hood will host the Canterbury<br />
Juniorregatta at the end of<br />
February.<br />
The racing continues in early<br />
March with the three day South<br />
Island Secondary Schools<br />
Championshipsand wraps up<br />
with the pinnacle regatta, the<br />
NZ Secondary Schools event<br />
(Maadi) at Lake Karapiro,<br />
Cambridgetwo weeks later.<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong> College rowers<br />
have steppeduptraining over<br />
the holiday break doing up to<br />
six morning sessions andtwo<br />
evening sessions aweek.<br />
Training is on the water in the<br />
mornings and focused on land<br />
fitnessinthe afternoons.<br />
The team is coached by<br />
Justin Wall andhas been<br />
fundraising tomeet the costs of<br />
travelling to Maadi.<br />
