Love of singing draws 100<br />
Around 100 young singers have<br />
been putthrough their paces at<br />
the Mid Canterbury Summer<br />
Singing School.<br />
The week longsinging school,<br />
now in its21st year, ended with<br />
two impressivepublic concerts<br />
at the event centre.<br />
The iconic summer school<br />
drew singersfrom the<br />
Canterbury region and divided<br />
them into two sections junior<br />
andseniors.<br />
Singing school director Jo<br />
Castelow saidthoseattending<br />
had alove of singingand<br />
musicaltheatre.<br />
They had sangamix of<br />
familiarsongs and other less<br />
knownsongs from thelikes of<br />
SpringAwakening and Coco.<br />
Juniors had tackled complex<br />
songsfrom Frozen2,while<br />
seniors were tested withsome<br />
trickymedleys.<br />
Mrs Castelow said many of<br />
the 50 seniors had attended<br />
previoussingingschools.<br />
Themusical repertoire also<br />
includedpieces fromMoulin<br />
Rouge the Musical andHarriet<br />
Tubman, an impressivemedley<br />
of songs by Elton Johnand the<br />
classic LedZeppelin tune<br />
Stairway to Heaven.<br />
Mrs Castelow saidjuniors<br />
had impressed with twopart<br />
harmonies, while seniorshad<br />
pulled off four to sixpart<br />
harmonies.<br />
Singingschool alumni Julia<br />
Bell was the guest<br />
choreographerthis yearand<br />
shared her stagecraft and<br />
movement knowledgewith<br />
singers.<br />
Other alumniwill be invited<br />
to choreograph at future<br />
singing schools.<br />
Mrs Castelow said anumber<br />
of singing school alumni had<br />
gone on to furtherstudies and<br />
she enjoyedkeeping in touch<br />
withthem.<br />

All of the memberspushed<br />
themselves past their comfort<br />
zone andcompletedthings<br />
with the support and<br />
encouragement of other<br />
members.<br />
The lasttime unit members<br />
tackledthe testingcoursewas<br />
