The program prepares trainees to test for a Texas Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) and is designed to lead graduates to immediate employment within the transportation industry after four weeks of hands-on training. Brush Up Your Skills <strong>TSTC</strong>’s Professional Driving Academy provides hands-on, technical training to provide you with practical experience needed to take your CDL tests. The program is performance-based, with no required prerequisite courses or certifications. The Professional Driving Academy consists of the following two courses: • Commercial Driver’s License Written Skills (Professional Driving Academy Prerequisite TCVOP 10CE). • Fundamental Driving Skills (Professional Truck Driving Academy I CVOP-1013). <strong>TSTC</strong> is currently taking applications for the Professional Driving Academy. Prospective students are asked to return this packet of information to <strong>TSTC</strong>. At that point, payment must be made in full at least three days before the class start date. Prerequisites • Pass a drug test. • Hold a current Class C driver’s license, without warrants or pending criminal charges. • Must hold a valid U.S. Social Security card. • Be authorized to work in the U.S. • Be at least 18 years of age. • Pass Department of Transportation physical. Exam Admission Requirements • Possess a valid driver’s license. • Be at least 18 years of age. • Provide a copy of drug test. • Provide a medical examiner’s certificate. Certificate • Payment for the course. • Provide driving record. • Attend mandatory pre-course. Training Schedule and Location The <strong>TSTC</strong> Professional Driving Academy holds classes at the <strong>TSTC</strong> campus in Abilene, with additional classes held as needed at the Sweetwater and Brownwood campuses. All classes are offered Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. A Promising Job Outlook The nationwide job market for professional truck drivers continues to grow. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Texas leads the nation in the number of heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers. The number is expected to grow 17 percent by 2026, according to O*Net OnLine. <strong>TSTC</strong>’s technical instruction and hands-on training in commercial driving give trainees the skills necessary to begin a well-paying and rewarding career.
