Here are some ofMarshfield’s best spots for outdoor recreation.DISC GOLF Marshfield is home tosome of the best places in the region for thispopular sport. New to disc golf? It’s played ina similar fashion to regular golf, but insteadof striking a small white ball with a club, youtoss a flying disc, and your target is a basket,rather than a hole.North Wood County Park is a pleasantplace for anyone to visit. Located on theYellow River, the park features two lakes,including one with a swimming beach. It alsohas a popular 99-site campground and animpressive 225-foot suspension bridge thatconnects to winding paths and helps visitorstake in views of two scenic dams. Disc golferswill find 18 challenging holes on a course thatflanks the river’s west bank. The park is locatedabout 13 miles south of downtown Marshfield.Another good bet for disc golf in townis Braem Park, a tranquil 40-acre park innortheast Marshfield. There’s something foreveryone in this park—it’s home to horseshoepits, a skate park, playground equipment forthe kids and tennis and pickleball courts. Thepark’s 18-hole disc golf course is located in apicturesque tract of woods.WINTER FUN The Marshfield Areahas some outstanding options for winterrecreation. When the snow flies, PowersBluff in Arpin is a must-visit destination.This 160-acre county park, located about 14miles southeast of downtown Marshfield, is18 | 2021 Visitors Guideone of the region’s best spots for winter fun.The park features three downhill skiing andsnowboarding trails and four tubing runs. Trailsfor cross-country skiing and snowshoeing arealso located at the park.Cross-country skiers can find additionaltrails at the Marshfield School Forest SkiTrail, which is open to the public. The heavilywooded trails include some steep stretchesappropriate for advanced skiers. A lodge witha large fireplace and restrooms is open toskiers on weekends.NATURAL AREAS Nature lovers willfind expansive wild places near Marshfield. Asweeping landscape of wetlands, forests andgrasslands can be found just 20 miles east ofMarshfield. The George W. Mead WildlifeArea is a 33,000-acre protected area that ishome an abundance of wildlife, including atleast 270 species of birds. The wildlife area isin a valley of the Little Eau Pleine River andoffers rich opportunities for hiking, biking,hunting, trapping, pet walking, jogging andbirdwatching. More than 80 miles of trailsand numerous parking areas provide visitorsan easy way to take in scenic views of thesurrounding landscape. Smoky Hill Road is agood drive that will allow you to see birds andother wildlife from the comfort of your car,with several parking and viewing areas locatedalong the road.North of Marshfield, McMillan Marshis another place for nature lovers who arelooking for a tranquil escape. The 6,500-acre property is located at the headwatersof the Little Eau Pleine River. Trails from aparking area take hikers and birdwatchersthrough wooded areas and past beautifulmarshlands. To reach the marsh, followCounty Highway E north out of Marshfield,turn left on Mann Road, then right onMeadow Avenue.RECREATION TRAILS Bikers, runnersand walkers will find lots of great trail optionsin and near Marshfield. The WildwoodConnector Trail is a paved 3-mile path runningfrom Wildwood Park through the heart ofMarshfield north to McMillan Marsh. The trailis fairly flat, making it good for families withkids. At the end of the Wildwood ConnectorTrail, you can continue on the unpavedMcMillan Marsh Trail, a 5.5-mile route that’sopen seasonally for biking (May 31-Aug. 31).Wildwood Park, home to about 3 miles ofpaved and granite trails (including a web oftrails that will take you into a wooded tract),is a natural oasis. Nature lovers will also find apleasant mile-long trail and another 1.5 milesof unpaved trails that surround a pond atHamus Nature Preserve. The 32-acre naturepreserve is located on Marshfield’s north side.Hikers looking for a longer route canexplore the 7-mile Berkhahn Hiking Trail,located in the George W. Mead Wildlifearea. The gravel trail closes seasonally(Sept. 1-Dec. 10).Veterans Parkway Trail is one of thelonger paved trails in town, running nearly4 miles from downtown to a parking areaon the south side of the city. Also on thesouth side of Marshfield, the Mill CreekTrail is a pleasant, paved trail that travelsnearly 3 miles in and around the Mill CreekBusiness Park. In Weber Park, a 37-acrecity park, you’ll find an additional 1.5 milesof unpaved trails. The park can be accessedat the corner of Holly Avenue and the endof West 5th Street.

Offering over 80 miles of hiking trails, biketrails, and recreational opportunities, Mead can truly offer visitors a one-ononenatureVexperience.NORTH WOOD COUNTY PARK7500 Park Lane, Arpin, WI715-421-8422 co.wood.wi.usLocated 13 miles south of downtown Marshfield, via Highway 73 and 80,on County Road A. The 172-acre park is situated on the banks of the YellowRiver. Two small artificial lakes created by dams on the river and a smallVpine-wooded island provide scenic beauty for the entire area. One of themain attractions of the park is the 225 foot suspension bridge over theriver. Other attractions include a disc golf course, stone shelter, and beacharea.
