WELCOME TO MARSHFIELD

welcome

WELCOME TO MARSHFIELD!

Thank you for visiting Marshfield! I invite

you to come experience everything our city has

to offer.

Marshfield is a place of optimism and is

looking forward in 2021. As we all know,

2020 was a challenging

year for so many and

travel was likely not a

priority for your family.

Understandably, we saw

fewer visitors. During this

time our city businesses

and leaders prepared to

welcome you back this

year (when you are ready

to travel). As I’m sure

you know Marshfield is a

community where we make health and safety

a priority, as our state-of-the-art Marshfield

Medical Center proves every day.

Our hotels, attractions, shopping and

restaurant businesses, and event organizers

have made significant changes to their

operations and protocol to ensure visitors’

protected health and safety, while maintaining

the same warm, inviting service. As you return

to Marshfield, you’ll find plenty of ways to

spend your time. Bring the whole family to

the new Vandehey Waters Outdoor

Aquatic Center (built upon the

previous Hefko Pool) with other

family-friendly onsite activities

opening this summer.

Our downtown welcomes you

to the new Discovery Education

Station, an environmental, science,

and arts education experience for all

ages that promotes the healthy care

of ourselves and our planet. You’re

sure to learn something new and

have fun doing it! Another exciting addition is

a newly built Egyptian-themed escape room at

Escape Room Marshfield, aptly named Tomb.

Wenzel Family Plaza is also back in full swing

this year with exciting plans and activities, plus a

wonderful, wintry offering: for the first time ever,

Ice Skating at the Plaza! We are also very proud

to introduce visitors to the new Hilton Hampton

Inn & Suites (opening 2021) an excellent

addition to Marshfield’s hotel portfolio.

There has never been a better time to

discover what makes Marshfield Made

New. We are a some-what secluded, proud

community that embraces our rural roots,

and yet also have lots of modern, big-city

highlights in our attractions, dining, and

boutique shopping. When you are ready

to roam, don’t settle for a typical tourist

trap – try something new and different, and

experience authentic Wisconsin hospitality

here in Marshfield. We’re ready for you.

Road Trip Inspiration

Take a virtual tour of Marshfield

Many of us have fond memories of road trips

with our families. Mom and Dad usually chose

the destination for us, but no matter where

your folks brought you or what you had hoped

to do or see, one thing could make or break the

success of your trip (and keep everyone smiling,

even when sharing the backseat of the car with

your siblings): preparation.

Packing is unavoidable, but what is just as

vital as your long checklist of must-brings is

preparing to spend

your trip time the way

you want.

Visit Marshfield

is here for you to

guide you in the

right direction to

ensure that you

create memories with

friends and families for years to come. Enjoy

a nostalgic meal that tastes just like homecooked

(or drink an old-fashioned, while you’re

at it) or experience a new hotspot in Marshfield

that you never expected to find.

There’s no better time plan a getaway to

refresh your spirits!

Take a virtual tour of Marshfield, via

visitmarshfield.com, where you can:

• Browse a variety of hotels & motels

• Search for new (or new-to-you) treasures

at local shops and antique stores

• Find an attraction to marvel at, like familyfriendly

larger-than-life Jurustic Park

• Tantalize your taste buds with a

preview of Marshfield’s restaurants

• Crowd-source some advice on your

stops from the Best of Marshfield

survey awards

• Plan a family outing to one (or more)

of Marshfield’s biggest festivals

And remember, whatever you see and do,

share it with us using #marshfieldmadenew.

MARSHFIELD MADE NEW

Marshfield Made New

We’re Ready for You!

I think everybody is ready for 2021 and

with our ever-changing world many things

will be different or new. That is why we are

showcasing how Marshfield is evolving and

growing as Marshfield Made New.

First, let’s dive deeper into what makes

Marshfield a great place to live, work, and play.

Marshfield is a bright star in the medical field,

and the well-known Marshfield Clinic Health

System and Marshfield Medical Center serves

the local community and thousands of visitors

with cutting-edge research, treatments,

and compassionate care. Marshfield also has

strong roots in agriculture, with local artisans

making some of the finest cheese, dairy

products, and other foods that are enjoyed all

around the world. We are also an important

transportation hub as we were founded on

the railroads, receiving the moniker of “The

Hub City,” and are home to one of the largest

trucking companies in the Midwest, Roehl

Transportation, Inc.

So why do visitors come to Marshfield to

have a good time? Marshfield is an off-thebeaten

path destination that celebrates all

the best things rural areas have to offer, while

pampering you with modern amenities for you

stay. You’ll be able to get away from the hustle

and bustle, and traffic drain typical of metro

areas, and take time to unwind and enjoy the

simpler things in life. Come to our restaurants

for a pint of locally brewed beer and nibble on

a savory cheese plate while catching up with

friends you haven’t seen in a while. Or spend

a day reconnecting with nature as you take a

hike on pleasant paths, maybe spotting some

herons and cranes (without the constant,

6 | 2021 Visitors Guide

distracting alerts or email notifications on your

phone). You can also reunite and make lasting

memories with your family by taking a trip

over to Wildwood Zoo or be regaled with zany

stories of the larger-than-life creatures found

at Jurustic Park.

So now you know more about Marshfield

– but what is Marshfield Made New?

Marshfield Made New is all about how we

pay homage to our

rich, storied history

while embracing

and planning for a

vibrant future. The

past is still everpresent,

whether

you’re finding new

treasures in specialty

antique stores

or following our

Downtown Jurustic

Trail, a brand-new,

fantastical tour of

rusted, sculpture masterpieces

created by Clyde Wynia. These

art pieces begin with the ordinary;

old scissors, garden clippers, and

forgotten tractors become creatures

that engage and expand the imagination of all,

big and small.

Marshfield is being transformed by the

building of new facilities to support our city’s

prosperous future. Two exciting examples

are coming in 2021: the Vandehey Waters

Outdoor Aquatic Center opening this summer

and the Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton,

opening this spring.

Generations of families in Marshfield have

cooled off on hot summer days at Hefko Pool

over the decades and created lasting memories.

Now the new Vandehey Waters (built on the

same site) will create future memories of

summer fun. This state-of-the-art outdoor

complex features recreational elements for

kids of all ages: multiple water slides, a climbing

wall, a current channel and a lap and recreation

pool for a full day of fun in the water. Back on

land, you can also pick up a game of basketball,

eat a snack or two at

the full concession

stand, have the

convenience of family

changing rooms with

private changing

stalls, and enjoy the

use of a reservable

shelter, party room,

grassy area, shade

structures, and plenty

of lounge chairs.

It’s the perfect way

to keep the kids

entertained while soaking

up the sun.

After a day full of

activities in Marshfield,

you’ll have a fresh place to

rest your head at the brand new Hampton Inn

& Suites by Hilton, conveniently located near

the Marshfield Medical Center at 400 W.

Upham Street. The hotel will have 86 rooms,

featuring 24 studio suites, an exercise room,

and an indoor heated pool. Travelers can count

on this popular and often requested Hilton

brand hotel, the first of its kind in Marshfield,

to provide quality service and comfort.

New-to-you additions from the previous

year include the multi-million-dollar

expansion of the Marshfield Clinic Health System

YMCA and the construction of the Marshfield

High School’s Kenneth & Ardyce Heiting

Community Stadium. The stadium seats about

4,000 spectators and has already hosted new

large football, track and soccer events with more

to come this year. Be sure to also check out how

Wildwood Zoo grew with the expanded Floyd

& Pat Hamus Cougar Exhibit and Marshfield

Zoological Society Welcome Center, located at

the center of the zoo, near star residents Kodiak

bears Munsey and Boda.

We are excited about all the ways Marshfield is,

and continues to be, Marshfield Made New.

We are embracing the optimism and spirit of

Marshfield Made New to guide us forward in the

future here at Visit Marshfield. We are looking

forward to welcoming you as you make plans

to experience and revel in the joys of travel in

2021. Remember, Marshfield is always a place

that preserves the past, breathes life into it, and

makes it new through care. We care about making

Marshfield a destination you will love traveling to

again and again!

Visit us—there’s always something new for you

to discover!

JURUSTIC TRAIL

Discover art on the

Downtown Jurustic Trail

Thousands of visitors come to experience

the whimsy of Jurustic Park each year. This

amazing metal sculpture park, located just

north of Marshfield,

is surrounded by a

mystical forested

area, and even has an

enchanting Hobbit

House. But what

many people don’t

know is that some

of the artist Clyde

Wynia’s creatures

have escaped and have

hidden in Downtown

Marshfield. To help you find these zany

creatures and discover some of Marshfield’s

hidden gems for dining and shopping, we

have created the Downtown Jurustic Trail.

*This tour clocks in at just under 1.5

miles. Most people walking at a leisurely

pace will take about 30-45 minutes to

complete it (but we encourage you to

stop and enjoy the sculptures, shopping

opportunities, delicious dining options, and

fun attractions along the way!)

1. Kick off your adventure at home

base: the Marshfield Area Chamber of

Commerce and Industry (MACCI) & Visit

Marshfield office

building. This is

a great place to

grab a copy of the

official Marshfield

Visitor guide, if you

don’t already have

one (also available

at visitmarshfield.

com/visitor-guide)

and to enjoy

ample parking

and a variety of

great restaurants

nearby if you’d like fuel up before hitting

the Downtown Jurustic Trail. It’s here that

you’ll meet Tillie, the first creature who,

very slowly and steadily, made a new home

amongst the rusty reeds.

2. Take the trail north on Central

Avenue, which Marshfield locals have

dubbed “Main Street.” You’ll pass by

Strohman Park, a beautifully landscaped

firefighter memorial. Nestled near the

10 | 2021 Visitors Guide

towering structure of the Chestnut Center

for the Arts are two more creatures, who

like to say “whooo,” “mew,” and play a tune

or two on a stringed instrument. While

you’re here, check out the Chestnut’s

offerings, including calendar of events,

pottery studio, art class schedule, or art

exhibitions displayed in their gallery.

3. Delightful detour: follow the

trail back to Central Avenue by way of

the Wenzel Family Plaza. Depending

on the time of day at the plaza, you’re

likely to see children running through

their water feature, morning people

stretching on Yoga mats, a food truck

feeding folk during the afternoon lunch

rush, or live concerts and other entertaining

events happening most weekends. If

you’re looking to satisfy your sweet tooth

before moving on, stop in at the 2 ½

Cups Cupcakery and Bakeshop. At the

spot marked #3 on your map you’ll find a

towering, metal turtle.

4. Continue along the paved walking/

biking trail on East Veteran’s Parkway. You

will pass by the Everett Roehl Marshfield

Public Library and the Marshfield Veterans

Memorial, showcasing paintings by local

artists and a flag display, honoring heroes

from the Marshfield area. Look up to see

the largest, fire-breathing,

winged creature on the

tour trail (this fantastical

fellow flew in to guard

our fair city and hasn’t

left since!). Snap a selfie

with this scaly friend

(#marshfieldmadenew),

turn around, and head

back to Central Avenue,

where you’ll pass the

Royal Tokyo Restaurant,

housed in a historic train

depot, and is a known as

a popular dinner spot for

Teppanyaki style group

meals and the place to go

for family celebrations.

5. Turn down Central

Avenue for more popular restaurants and

shopping options, and make your way

down to your next destination, Hardacre

Park. Named after an influential mayor

known for her leadership, you’ll find rusty

creatures that swam to Marshfield during

a great flood, probably thousands of years

ago. You can also pull up a bench and view

a painted timeline of Marshfield’s pasts

and milestones in the surrounding murals.

Next-door is a Marshfield staple, Crabby

Dave’s, known to have one of the best

brandy old fashions in town.

6. Meander down a few more

short blocks to Nutz Deep II, one of

Marshfield‘s most popular restaurants and

watering holes (with a wacky name, and

seriously good burgers). The creatures

here are some of the newest that just

escaped Jurustic Park. Be careful - they

may not be as used to close,

human interaction as some

of the other creatures on

the tour.

7. Cross Central Avenue

to find your final stop,

the Blue Heron Brewpub,

another great place to grab

lunch or dinner. You’ll love

the modern, gastropub

atmosphere in this former ice

cream factory building. After

finding all the creatures in the

Heron, kick back and relax

(maybe while enjoying a pint),

and you’ll find yourself back

at the start of your journey.

Be a good anthropologist

and report your findings

on the downtown trail back to us, so that

creator Clyde from Jurustic Park can help

track down these rusty creatures and try to

return them to his park!

WENZEL FAMILY PLAZA

Wenzel Family Plaza

keeps on truckin’ with

family events //////

The Wenzel Family Plaza is

Marshfield’s year-round community

square and event hub located in the

heart of downtown.

The plaza embraced fun in the

snow with Cabin Fever Fest last

February, which encouraged the

community to get out and enjoy

winter in Wisconsin! The event

featured bonfires, s’mores, a cocoa

& beer bar, and kids fun run with one

goal: warm up those winter blues.

The plaza’s summer season kicked

off with the push of a button, turning

on the ever-popular water feature.

All summer, delighted children beat

the heat by running and jumping

through bursting jets of water, again,

again, and again.

Wenzel Family Plaza also brought

back the tradition of hosting Food

Truck Fridays in the plaza last

year, offering people a chance to

experience a meal or snack alfresco:

• Paninis and house made chips

by Stone Press

• Sliders, pork nachos, quesadillas

& more from Munch a Bunch

• Donut holes, elephant ears,

deep fried cream puffs at Geno’s

BakeShoppe

The plaza has also become a place

of gathering for peace of mind.

On Saturdays, the ever-popular

Yoga in the Plaza events filled the

grassy grounds with yoga mats and

attendees wanting to stretch away

stress and achieve some morning

Zen. Even in less-than-ideal

temperatures, yogis from all around

participated.

The Wenzel Family Plaza has

won over the favor of travelers and

citizens alike. After celebrating

its first year, it won Best Public

Improvement Project through the

Wisconsin Economic Development

Corporation and won a 2019 Great

Places Wisconsin award by the

American Planning Association

Wisconsin chapter. The Wenzel

Family Plaza also gained national

notoriety during the Marshfield

episode of the PBS show “Around

the Corner with John McGivern,”

which aired spring of 2020.

The Wenzel Family Plaza’s

programming promises to expand

its offerings of family-centric fun

for 2021 with an exciting new event

this winter: Ice Skating in the Plaza!

For more information on this and

more upcoming Wenzel Family Plaza

events, go to visitmarshfield.com.

OUTDOOR RECREATION

outdoor recreation

The Marshfield Area is home to gorgeous

parks, trails and outdoor green spaces that

are ideal for those who like to get moving,

whether that means a round of disc golf, a

downhill tubing run, a scenic hike or a ride

on a tranquil bike path. Here are some of

Marshfield’s best spots for outdoor recreation.

DISC GOLF Marshfield is home to

some of the best places in the region for this

popular sport. New to disc golf? It’s played in

a similar fashion to regular golf, but instead

of striking a small white ball with a club, you

toss a flying disc, and your target is a basket,

rather than a hole.

North Wood County Park is a pleasant

place for anyone to visit. Located on the

Yellow River, the park features two lakes,

including one with a swimming beach. It also

has a popular 99-site campground and an

impressive 225-foot suspension bridge that

connects to winding paths and helps visitors

take in views of two scenic dams. Disc golfers

will find 18 challenging holes on a course that

flanks the river’s west bank. The park is located

about 13 miles south of downtown Marshfield.

Another good bet for disc golf in town

is Braem Park, a tranquil 40-acre park in

northeast Marshfield. There’s something for

everyone in this park—it’s home to horseshoe

pits, a skate park, playground equipment for

the kids and tennis and pickleball courts. The

park’s 18-hole disc golf course is located in a

picturesque tract of woods.

WINTER FUN The Marshfield Area

has some outstanding options for winter

recreation. When the snow flies, Powers

Bluff in Arpin is a must-visit destination.

This 160-acre county park, located about 14

miles southeast of downtown Marshfield, is

18 | 2021 Visitors Guide

one of the region’s best spots for winter fun.

The park features three downhill skiing and

snowboarding trails and four tubing runs. Trails

for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are

also located at the park.

Cross-country skiers can find additional

trails at the Marshfield School Forest Ski

Trail, which is open to the public. The heavily

wooded trails include some steep stretches

appropriate for advanced skiers. A lodge with

a large fireplace and restrooms is open to

skiers on weekends.

NATURAL AREAS Nature lovers will

find expansive wild places near Marshfield. A

sweeping landscape of wetlands, forests and

grasslands can be found just 20 miles east of

Marshfield. The George W. Mead Wildlife

Area is a 33,000-acre protected area that is

home an abundance of wildlife, including at

least 270 species of birds. The wildlife area is

in a valley of the Little Eau Pleine River and

offers rich opportunities for hiking, biking,

hunting, trapping, pet walking, jogging and

birdwatching. More than 80 miles of trails

and numerous parking areas provide visitors

an easy way to take in scenic views of the

surrounding landscape. Smoky Hill Road is a

good drive that will allow you to see birds and

other wildlife from the comfort of your car,

with several parking and viewing areas located

along the road.

North of Marshfield, McMillan Marsh

is another place for nature lovers who are

looking for a tranquil escape. The 6,500-

acre property is located at the headwaters

of the Little Eau Pleine River. Trails from a

parking area take hikers and birdwatchers

through wooded areas and past beautiful

marshlands. To reach the marsh, follow

County Highway E north out of Marshfield,

turn left on Mann Road, then right on

Meadow Avenue.

RECREATION TRAILS Bikers, runners

and walkers will find lots of great trail options

in and near Marshfield. The Wildwood

Connector Trail is a paved 3-mile path running

from Wildwood Park through the heart of

Marshfield north to McMillan Marsh. The trail

is fairly flat, making it good for families with

kids. At the end of the Wildwood Connector

Trail, you can continue on the unpaved

McMillan Marsh Trail, a 5.5-mile route that’s

open seasonally for biking (May 31-Aug. 31).

Wildwood Park, home to about 3 miles of

paved and granite trails (including a web of

trails that will take you into a wooded tract),

is a natural oasis. Nature lovers will also find a

pleasant mile-long trail and another 1.5 miles

of unpaved trails that surround a pond at

Hamus Nature Preserve. The 32-acre nature

preserve is located on Marshfield’s north side.

Hikers looking for a longer route can

explore the 7-mile Berkhahn Hiking Trail,

located in the George W. Mead Wildlife

area. The gravel trail closes seasonally

(Sept. 1-Dec. 10).

Veterans Parkway Trail is one of the

longer paved trails in town, running nearly

4 miles from downtown to a parking area

on the south side of the city. Also on the

south side of Marshfield, the Mill Creek

Trail is a pleasant, paved trail that travels

nearly 3 miles in and around the Mill Creek

Business Park. In Weber Park, a 37-acre

city park, you’ll find an additional 1.5 miles

of unpaved trails. The park can be accessed

at the corner of Holly Avenue and the end

of West 5th Street.

OUTDOORS & ATV TRAILS

Wood County

continues support

of UTV routes amid

industry boom //////

Author, Power Pac Equipment & Motorsports

Getting outdoors has never been sexier.

Amidst a global pandemic keeping folks

closer to home and “Instagram syndrome”

where capturing adventurous, beautiful

photos is king, outdoor industries have

grown exponentially in the last year. UTV

and ATV trail riding is one of the hottest

outdoor trends and Wood County continues

to cater to the pastime’s growth in Central

Wisconsin to the benefit of local economies.

Wood County is announcing 25 miles

of additional routes that will officially

open in the spring of 2021. This comes

on the heels of two very productive years

of opening routes for the county. In June

2019, 49 miles of new UTV/ATV routes

were opened, followed by 10 new ATV/

UTV campsites in Pittsville’s Dexter Park

and more than $400,000 in grants that

funded route and trail maintenance.

“The new routes demonstrate Wood

County’s commitment to growing off-road

Looking to get in on the UTV

trend? There are a number of

things to consider. Kyle Skoug,

Powersports Salesman for Power

Pac, asks his customers: “What do

you want to do with your vehicle?”

HERE’S HIS TIPS:

• SPEED/TRAIL RIDING:

If speed and adventure is the name

of your game, then consider the

Polaris RZR® or Yamaha YXZ®.

Built for off-road performance and

designed for width-restricted trails,

the RZR and YXZ are for the rider

looking to insert some high-speed

adventure into his/her life.

tourism,” says Jake Hahn, Chairman,

Highway, Infrastructure and Recreation

Committee. “Our neighboring counties are

generating a lot of tourism dollars and with

the economic environment being what it is,

we can’t afford not to do it. Jackson County

generates $12 million dollars of economic

activity with their route and trail system.

That’s the kind of shot in the arm that will

allow local bars and restaurants to keep

their doors open.”

The new Wood County routes were

strategically designed to connect to existing

mainline routes and trails, thereby linking

to adjacent counties. The goal: bring new

visitors and dollars through the area.

“A study from the County Highway

and Planning Departments estimated the

economic impact of the new routes to be

around $355 to $427 per visiting rider,”

says Matt McLean, Executive Director,

Visit Marshfield. “Not only are these

CHOOSING THE RIGHT UTV

Power Pac

powerpacequipment.com

• WORK OR LEISURE: Need

a workhorse to help with yardwork

or a campground runner? The

Polaris Ranger is a king in this

space. The Kawasaki Mule and

John Deere Gator are also great

work or leisure machines. Looking

for a more economical version? The

Ranger 500 or the Kawasaki Mule

PRO-FX are both worth a look.

• I WANT IT ALL: If you are

looking for work and play – chores

and trail riding – the Polaris

General XP or Yamaha Wolverine

RMAX are great options. With

towing performance, a dump

box, touch screen and great

ground clearance and suspension,

you can get your work done

AND dominate the toughest

trail. Kawasaki Teryx® is a more

economical option here and still

has a 783 cc engine and dumpbox.

• PASSENGER ROOM:

Think through how many

passengers you want

your side-by-side to

accommodate. Models have

2, 3, 4 or 6-seat options.

• TECH: Brands offer GPS

touch screens that you can

add to your unit which can

make navigating trails a lot

easier. The software allows

you to plan trips, track and

share rides and log service.

• MAKE IT YOURS: You can

customize your machine in a

number of ways.

- Rims and tires: Think

about where you will be

riding. Most factory tires are

made for off-road riding so,

developments a great asset for riders, but

they will invigorate local businesses by

increasing traffic from an under-tapped

group of visitors and consumers.”

A 2011 case study of the Cheese

County Trail in southern Wisconsin found

that the total combined spending of all

trail users exceeded $15 million during the

12-month study. 86% of that amount was

from non-local trail users.

“These aren’t small numbers,” says Mandy

Witt, co-owner of Power Pac. “This type

of tourism will do real things for our local

economy and Central Wisconsin can no

longer be seen as a ‘drive through’ area on

the way to the Northwoods. We applaud

Wood County for seeing this vision and

we’ll do everything we can to assist in this

strategic growth for our local communities.

We are currently working to help open

more local townships and hope they see the

benefits in action.”

OTHER THINGS

TO CONSIDER:

if you are planning to ride on

more compact gravel routes

or roads, consider radial tires.

- Bells and whistles: Other

add on’s include sound

systems, cab upgrades,

storage, gun racks,

coolers, heat and even air

conditioning.

- Seasonal needs: Don’t

forget to ask about cab, plow

or track packages for your

machine.

CITY MAP OF MARSHFIELD

WILDWOOD ZOO

There’s lots to see and do

at Wildwood Zoo //////

There’s lots to see and do at Wildwood

Zoo, with interactive exhibits sure to

delight visitors and the zoo’s animal

population. The zoo’s latest improvements

feature a spacious Cougar Exhibit and

Welcome Center. The

natural habitat cougar

exhibit proudly bears the

names of locals Floyd

and Pat Hamus, whose

generous donation to the

project helped make the

expansion possible. The

cougar siblings, Star and

Thunder, love this upgrade

to their home which boasts nearly ten

times the size of their previous space. The

large viewing windows from the Welcome

Center into the exhibit provide an up-close

look at the cougars’ handling area. This

gives visitors the opportunity to see the

cougars interact with the zookeeper behind

the scenes and during feeding times.

A main part of Wildwood Zoo’s

mission is to educate the public on

wildlife and its environment. Featured

prominently in the Welcome Center is

a new, interactive, hands-on water table

experience. Kids can don a raincoat and

manipulate the table to rain and learn

about the importance of water quality as

it undergoes evaporation, transpiration,

precipitation, and condensation during

00

Feet

its life cycle. Familiar spots and local

landmarks are also built into the table,

like the World’s Largest Round Barn and

the baseball fields at the Steve J. Miller

Recreation area. A separate, interactive,

electric display also teaches kids about

the scientific wonders of power. The

Welcome Center also features small

animals such as common chuckwalla, grey

tree frogs, hognose snakes, ornate box

turtles, and tiger salamanders. Visitors

will also be happy to find new ADA

compliant restrooms for comfort and

convenience in the building.

Make sure you check out the monarch

butterfly exhibit, a display curated by local

residents Melissa and James Gwiazda and

features a monarch butterfly mural that’s

become a popular spot for photo ops (it’s

near the Bear Woods pond).

Finally, no zoo trek is complete without

a visit to twin Kodiak bears Munsey and

Boda, the stars of the zoo. The thousandpound

bears are still young at heart and

love to play—they wrestle, swim and

simply have fun. Kids love the

15-foot wide glass viewing

windows along with plenty of

shade, while the bears love

splashing in the recirculating

pools, and crossing the

covered bridge to explore an

acre of enrichment grounds

in Bear Woods, which gives

them room to roam and play.

Make it a fun-packed summer day of

outdoor fun with a visit to Wildwood Zoo,

a playground break at Wildwood Park,

a splash-filled or tranquil dip at nearby

Vandehey Waters Outdoor Aquatic

Center, and end the day with an ice cream

treat at Hub City Ice Cream Company (all

within a half mile).

GRANITE & QUARTZ

We receive five-star reviews from our customers at The Granite Shop. We take

pride in providing our customers with quality work for each project.

AROUND THE CORNER

Marshfield featured on public television

Check out the Marshfield episode of

“Around the Corner with John McGivern,”

a PBS Wisconsin series that spotlights

Wisconsin’s unique towns and neighborhoods.

McGivern visited some of our top businesses

and attractions and learned what makes our

community special.

Wildwood Zoo is a major attraction for visitors

to Marshfield and was one of the key stops for

the crew. During an interview with Zookeeper

Steve Burns, McGivern learned about the story

of star zoo residents, Kodiak bears Munsey and

Boda. The two bears arrived in Marshfield in

2015 and are very rare because they are two

of only three bears of their species in the lower

48 states. Munsey and Boda are living large as

themselves. They have one of the largest exhibits

you would ever see in a zoo, with over 48,000

square feet of natural surroundings and a viewing

area. These big boys need every inch of space

they have, topping the scales and weighing in at

well over 1,000 pounds each.

The episode also shows off the amazing

monarch butterfly display, which educates the

public on their life cycle from egg to caterpillar

to cocoon, and beyond on the butterflies’ release

and migration. The local experts, the Gwiazda

family, curate this incredible exhibit.

In addition to a tour around Wildwood Zoo,

the episode also includes stops and exclusive

interviews at Jurustic Park, Wenzel Family

Plaza, Nasonville Dairy, The Kitchen Table,

Weinbrenner Shoe Company, Marshfield

Furniture, Marshfield Medical Center, 2 ½ Cups

Cupcakery and Bakeshop, and notable residents

Chris and Erin Howard.

This Emmy Award winning show also includes

a short history of each community told by wellknown

Milwaukee historian, John Gurda. Radio

host and John’s brother, Mike McGivern, tells

us what prep sport is popular in each town they

visit. The episode has already racked up over

10,000 views on YouTube.

Serving up local dairy

deliciousness //////

Marshfield is in the heart of dairy country,

and there are so many delicious varieties to

experience here. From farm-fresh cheeses

to cool and creamy frozen delights, a foodloving

traveler can “milk it” for all it’s worth!

Here are some ideas to get you “moo-ving”

in the right direction.

NASONVILLE DAIRY (10898 Hwy

10 West, Marshfield) Located right outside

Marshfield, this dairy store is a must-visit.

Nasonville Dairy has been around for 150

years, and it offers a big selection of specialty

cheeses, including 10-year aged cheddar and

their oh-so-spicy Scorpion Cheddar. With

multiple Wisconsin Master Cheesemakers at

Nasonville Dairy, you know you’ll get quality

cheese varieties to enjoy and share.

WEBER’S FARM STORE (9706 County

Road H, Marshfield) This dairy store is a

Marshfield institution, offering high-quality

dairy products since 1904. It’s the place to

go for unique or classic cheese varieties, ice

cream and local butter. There’s a drive-up

window for your convenience, where you can

pick up ice cream treats for the whole family

or stock up on your favorite variety of milk.

Enjoy choosing from an expansive selection

of cheeses or just grab a bag of squeaky

cheese curds to snack on. Weber’s is a local

favorite—it won Best Shop for Gifts in the

2019 Best of Marshfield poll.

MELODY GARDENS RESTAURANT

(1200 S. Oak Avenue, Marshfield) A

Marshfield classic, Melody Gardens is the

perfect place to take the kids for homemade

ice cream (by the cone or by the quart)!

Special occasion coming up? They’ve got you

covered with their decadent homemade ice

cream cakes. Want something savory? You can

also order for breakfast, lunch, or supper.

HUB CITY ICE CREAM CO. (1610 S.

Central Avenue, Marshfield) This Central

Avenue establishment is the place to visit on

a warm Marshfield day (or any day you need

something sweet). It dishes up 24 flavors of

Chocolate Shoppe ice cream and makes its

waffle cones in house every day. Hub City

Ice Cream Company also serves sundaes,

floats, shakes, malts, slushies and more—a

refreshing treat after a look at the animals at

Wildwood Park & Zoo, conveniently located a

few blocks away.

Over 125 Years in the Making

Nasonville Dairy is located right outside of

Marshfield, in Central Wisconsin, where local

cheesemakers have produced traditional

Wisconsin cheeses on the same site for over 125

years. Today we buy milk from 180 farm

families and convert that into more than

100,000 pounds of exceptional cheese each day.

We are committed to support local dairy farmers

and use fresh milk from our neighbors' farms to

make Nasonville's award-winning cheeses.

A Foodie Getaway //////

Marshfield’s dining scene has changed

a lot in recent years, and there’s a lot for

food lovers to discover. New restaurants are

popping up throughout the city and longtime

spots are delivering new menu items while

still serving up all the classics. Exploring

this culinary bounty is a tasty excuse for a

getaway, and it’s

easy to find some

of the best food

in town—just visit

the establishments

that are Best of

Marshfield winners.

These places

received top honors

in this annual survey

voted on by locals.

Pack your bags and bring an appetite!

Friday dinner—There’s perhaps no dining

tradition more celebrated in Wisconsin than

the Friday night fish fry. Nutz Deep II, a

Marshfield institution with a colorful name,

draws rave reviews for its food, and its fish

fry has won the hearts of locals–in 2020 it

was voted Best Fish Fry. Not into fish? The

restaurant’s signature burgers are also amazing.

After dinner, relax in your hotel. Looking

for a comfortable unique place to stay with

a full menu of amenities? Hotel Marshfield

won Best Hotel/Motel in 2020. Another

great bet: The Holiday Inn & Conference

Center, which is home to the renovated

restaurant, The Rivers.

Saturday breakfast—The Kitchen Table

has been serving up hearty, homemade

breakfasts for more than four decades. The

restaurant won the 2019 Best Breakfast

award, and this is a place to go for all the

classics—buttermilk pancakes, hash browns,

omelets and bacon. Don’t worry–

they’ll be sure to keep the hot

coffee flowing.

Saturday lunch—Spice things

up with a trip to El Mezcal. This

Mexican restaurant delivers southof-the-border

classics with flair,

winning both Best Ethnic Restaurant

and Best Outdoor Dining in 2020.

The restaurant’s daily lunch specials

include tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas,

burritos and more. Dive into the

complimentary chips and salsa (and

get some queso blanco) while you

review the full menu.

After lunch, head to these must-see

foodie shops: Weber’s Farm Store and 2½

Cups Cupcakery & Bakeshop. Weber’s

won Best Shop for Gifts in 2019 and

sells an extensive line of cheese that’s

produced at this fifth-generation dairy.

Their selection includes lots of favorites,

like 11-year aged cheddar and

merlot Parmesan. 2½ Cups

– Cupcakery & Bakeshop,

located in the Downtown

Historic District will have

your mouth watering with

gourmet cupcakes and other

sweet treats.

Saturday dinner—Wind

down with a little Marshfield

comfort food. According to

the latest Best of Marshfield survey, the

place to go is MoJo’s Pasta House & Cajun

Cook Shack. This fast-casual family-owned

eatery makes their Cajun and Italian

entrees from scratch, fresh and to order.

Try their Pasta Jambalaya, served with

tender chicken, andouille sausage and Gulf

pan-seared shrimp.

Sunday breakfast—

Head to the

Lumberyard Bar & Grill.

The restaurant serves

hearty breakfasts,

including a bacon

cheeseburger-stuffed

French toast. If

you arrive late, the

lunch menu does

not disappoint. The

Lumberyard serves up

flatbreads that are out

of this world.

Pet-friendly travel spots

in the Marshfield area

There’s no need to leave your best friend

at home when you visit Marshfield. The city

welcomes travelers with four

legs with friendly lodging,

attractions, parks and events

that will get everyone’s tail

wagging. Here’s a guide to

visiting Marshfield with your

furry friend.

A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP

Need a place to stay that the

whole family can enjoy? You’re

in luck: Marshfield is home to

hotels that are happy to welcome

pets. You’ll find plenty of creature

comforts and a relaxing stay—fall

asleep counting sheep (or perhaps enjoy some

dreams of chasing them). Hotel Marshfield,

2700 S. Central Ave., offers special pet-friendly

rooms and services—your pooch will know

they’re at the right hotel when

they spot the water bowl in

the lobby. Quality Inn, 114 E.

Upham St., has pet-friendly

rooms, food and water

for your pup in the lobby,

and an area outside where

pets can answer the call of

nature. Check with individual

properties for the latest rates,

policies and pet fees.

ICE CREAM FOR ALL

Who doesn’t love an ice cream cone? Treat

the whole family to a scoop or two of the cold

stuff. Hub City Ice Cream Company (1610 S.

Central Ave., open seasonally) has everyone

covered. Those who arrive on two legs can

enjoy delicious Chocolate Shoppe flavors like

Zanzibar Chocolate and Ultimate Oreo. While

those flavors contain chocolate (sorry

Fido), Hub City has every doggy diet

covered: Just order a “pup cone.” The

shop has outdoor seating and is close to

sidewalks and trails good for a stroll if

you need to leash up and walk off a few

calories.

ROOM TO RUN After a long car

trip, everyone needs to stretch their

legs. Head to Paws N’ Play Dog Park, an

expansive 4.5-acre dog park that welcome

visitors who need a place to run and sniff.

The fenced, grassy park includes separate

areas for small and large pooches and is

open to all non-aggressive dogs that are current on

vaccinations. The park is located on the northwest

corner of 21st Street and S. Peach Ave. on the

Central Wisconsin State Fairgrounds. The park is

run by dog-loving volunteers;

small donations to help offset

maintenance are welcomed.

A GOOD READ If

you left your pets at home

but are missing a little

companionship, you might

find a furry friend in the

aisles—or windows—of

Thimbleberry Books, 166 S.

Central Ave. Friendly cats

roam this charming bookstore,

keeping watch over a vast selection of new and

used books, all at affordable prices.

BEST OF SHOW Dogs take center stage

every summer at the Marshfield Fairgrounds.

Whether you’re an exhibitor or a fan, you won’t

want to miss the Marshfield Area Kennel Club

Dog Show. More than 100 breeds participate

in this annual event—everything from Afghan

hounds to Welsh corgis. Dogs and their

handlers take to the ring and face off in various

categories, including junior showmanship,

obedience and rally obedience. Pooches from

throughout the region compete to see who’s

the top dog. Woof!
