Pregnancy, babies and the road to becoming… 

2020 MCI National Champion 

Since the age of 7 when I first sat on a pony I was hooked. If 

you would have told me that 20 years later, I would have ridden 

for Great Britain, competed around Europe and forged a 

successful career as a rider and trainer, I would not have 

believed you. I am now a wife, mother of 2 beautiful girls, a 

wife, a cook, a gardener, a very OCD cleaner and a groom 

and all this whilst balancing my own horse and professional 

career as a trainer. Below is just a little snippet of how my life 

has been over the last year since my second child was born. 

From the moment I found out I was pregnant with Rosalina, I 

was determined to keep fit but by being as sensible as 

possible. I was only riding my own horse Gido who is completely 

bulletproof and as safe as horses come. Seven months into the 

pregnancy, I managed to finish my music regional 

qualifications for Novice and Elementary which was a huge 

relief as it was my last chance before the birth in 8 weeks' time! 

The judge even said in her comments "I hope your baby will 

like dressage" which I will keep to show Rosalina one day. The 

toughest part of competing whilst 7 months pregnant is 

managing the simple things that we take for granted - getting 

changed, fitting into your jodhpurs, not busting out the jacket 

and not needing the toilet every 10 minutes! It was a case of 

having to borrow riding boots, jods and jackets to fit my 

ever-expanding waistline and get me through the day. Oh, the 

glamour! 

After Rosalina was born, I was back on the horse and feeling 

great despite a painful episiotomy only 12 days previously. My 

husband and many others still say I was barking mad! 

I listened to my body and built up sensibly and slowly. In a funny 

sort of way, it was quite handy that Gido had lost his fitness, 

so this gave us the natural opportunity to get our fitness back 

together. 

When we felt ready, I decided to go to a practice show at my 

local venue Keysoe, just two weeks before the regionals. The 

trouble with wanting to compete and to have time to yourself 

when you have a newborn, is well, that they do not allow you 

any time to do this! It was a rather funny juggling act trying to 

get Gido ready, squeezing into my rather tight jacket and 

boots, express milk to keep Rosa fed and then not forgetting 

to put my nipple pads on to keep any resemblance of dignity 

I had left! Luckily, my in-laws came to help me and made the 

whole experience manageable. I could not have done it 

without them that's for sure! 

The regionals had arrived and I felt as good as possible given 

the little time I had after giving birth. Unfortunately, the first 

test did not go so well. Gido was unusually tense, and very 

wired. It was his first big event indoors which took him out of 

his comfort zone. All in all, I think it was a little overwhelming 

for him. We shook ourselves off, refocused, and went back 3 

days later to Addington for the Novice freestyle. The boy felt 

great and I just knew the test flowed and felt magical. I had 

an amazing feeling coming down the centre line in Medium 

trot when the lovely judge stood up and with the biggest smile 

on her face. 

After a tense wait it was confirmed that we had won. It really 

is what dreams are made of and one of my most wonderful 

memories holding my 12 week old baby, with my amazing 

supportive family watching me in the prize giving. 

The very next day after competition I had to call the ambulance 

for my mum as her back went into spasm with a slipped disc. 

She ended up being in the hospital for a long 8 weeks. During 

this time whilst visiting mum in the London hospital, our little 

Rosa also got admitted to the UCL hospital with breathing 

difficulties and diagnosed with a very bad case of Bronchiolitis. 


After a long week we were finally allowed home and slowly got 

back into the swing of things. 

March 2020 the world went into lockdown. I must admit I 

cannot complain at all. Being extremely lucky having the horses 

on site at my Mum and Dads lovely home which is literally across 

the road from our own house. Myself and my husband Alex got 

into a lovely rhythm of keeping fit, homeschooling our 4 year 

old Bella, training hard with Gido and enjoying some quality 

family life. 

It was announced in the summer that the Nationals would go 

ahead in August. Me and our lovely 'super groom’ Amy, loaded 

up and headed to Hartbury. Anyone there will vouch for how 

bad the weather was! The night before we were rocking in the 

horse lorry and woken up by the sideways rain. The actual test 

did not have the best of starts with Gido breaking into canter 

in our first medium trot, however I tried to put this behind us 

and focus on the rest. All things considered I was pretty 

pleased. We ended up coming 8th out of an extremely 

competitive class with 70%. 

Our next focus was the MCI national show. Having competed 

internationally on 2 occasions with the MCI family, I was super 

excited to catch up with everyone. You could not meet a 

friendlier bunch of people in a show environment. Gido was 

on fire in a couple of his tests pulling out a PB of 74% in his 

elementary/medium helping us to take the overall title of 

National Golega Champion. It was the best way to finish the 

competitive year considering how many challenges we had 

had to overcome. 

As always I am extremely grateful for all the support from my 

family, but most importantly my mum, dad and husband Alex. 

Its is true to say that I do this extremely addictive and wonderful 

sport on an absolute shoestring, which makes these special 

times all the sweeter. My trainer, Lisa Hopkins is a huge part of 

my success and her eye for detail is to be admired. I am 

supported massively by my 2 sponsors EK9B who supply all my 

clothing and Brockhurst Limousin (Pedigree Cattle Breeders) 

who have supported me for a number of years enabling me to 

try and achieve my dreams. 

The next couple of years I plan to train and compete Gido to 

hopefully PSG (only if we break the back of the flying changes 

anytime soon), continue my work with my training livery (the 

lovely Sofia and BB), raising my girls and my work as trainer. 

Once Rosa starts preschool. I plan to search for my next ride 

and open my last stable for another training livery. I am excited 

to hopefully one day reach my long-standing dream of riding 

at Grand Prix Level but for now I am extremely lucky with the 

position I am in. 

I'm not going to lie, this year has been a constant juggling act 

tearing me to all different places,as it has for so many of us. I 

take my hat off to all mums out there trying to juggle it all - you 

are all heroes in my eyes. Organization, early 

starts, steely determination and above all else, 

a passion for our wonderful horses are all the 

quality that keep us crazy horsey lot going!

New Affordable Event Horse 

Ownership Syndicate 

Eventing enthusiasts can own a share in an exciting young 

event horse ridden by Laura Collett for just £65.00 

The Event Horse Owners Syndicate has unveiled its first 

affordable event horse syndicate with Laura Collett! Eventing 

enthusiasts can now buy a share in an exciting new young 

event horse sourced by Laura Collett and imported from 

Germany by the Event Horse Owners Syndicate (EHOS) for just

an athletic five-year-old gelding sourced by Laura from Peter 

Thomsen’s performance horse operation in Northern Germany,

POLEWORK 

TO STRENGTHEN AND ENGAGE THE CORE

As we start 2021 with restrictions in place, 

we can set our sights to spending more time 

in the saddle. Leisure and competition 

horses alike are all athletes; they all have a 

job to do requiring a certain level of fitness. 

It is our responsibility as owners and riders 

to ensure our horses are fit enough for the 

level of work we expect them to carry out, 

focusing on the musculoskeletal system as 

well as the cardiovascular system. 

The core consists of the spinal muscles, the 

abdominal muscles and the pelvic floor 

muscles. Collectively, these three muscle 

groups work to support the horse’s back and 

keep it straight and strong - this is 

important as the muscles must be correctly 

developed and conditioned to enable the 

horse to comfortably carry the rider and 

achieve the level of performance 

expected. By having a strong core, 

the horse can control the joints and 

therefore prevent the risk of stress 

related injuries to tendons, 

ligaments and the joints themselves. 

Factors like age and conformation 

can play a part in core stability. For 

instance, older horses may have less 

core stability than a younger horse 

due to the ligaments connecting 

the bones together stretching with 

age, making it more difficult for the 

muscles to contract. For example, 

a veteran horse with weak, 

unconditioned core muscles could 

eventually develop a swayed back. 

A horse with certain conformational 

faults such as a long back will need 

extra care taken to ensure the core muscles 

are kept strong to overcome the downward 

gravitational pull on the gut. It is therefore 

vital to focus on core strength when working 

on a fitness regime, keeping the horse as 

comfortable as possible, for as long as 

possible. 

When engaged correctly, the horse uses 

core strength to transfer the weight into the 

hind quarters, driving the energy forwards 

from behind and lifting and lightening the 

forehand allowing for a softer feel into the 

contact and the rider’s hands. 

As well as regular sports/deep tissue 

massage and chiropractic therapies 

keeping the horse’s musculoskeletal system 

and biomechanics working how they should, 

pole work is a fantastic way to help activate 

the core muscles, fitten the horse and flex the 

joints. 

Regular pole work improves rhythm, balance 

and suppleness and assists with the 

lengthening of the stride. 

Before commencing pole work, the horse 

must be fully warmed up to prevent any injury 

from occurring. This type of work is strenuous 

to unfit horses and ponies, so if you’re 

bringing them back in to work after a break, 

please start by only walking over the poles 

and gradually build up to trot before finally 

introducing canter poles over several weeks. 

Each exercise must be carried out equally on 

both reins, to ensure an even buildup of 

muscles. 

There are many exercises available using a 

various quantity of poles. Probably the most 

common set up would be to place three or 

more poles parallel to each other either on 

the floor or raised a few centimeters, spaced 

at approximate distances of 90cm for walk, 

1.25m for trot and 3m for canter, although 

these measurements may need altering 

depending on the individual horse’s length of 

stride. 

By varying the exercises and using different 

layouts, we can provide mental stimulation 

for the horse, keeping them interested in their 

work and eager to perform well. 

SCATTER POLES 

The poles are scattered on the floor without 

measuring the distances, creating odd 

angles and distances between each pole. 

This exercise can be ridden over in walk and 

trot or performed in hand. 

The irregular pole placement will encourage 

the horse to lower the head to have a look at 

the poles and therefore naturally work in to 

a long and low frame. The rider’s job is to 

aim for the middle of the poles, and keep the 

contact soft, allowing the horse to stretch 

down and work out for themselves, where to 

place the hooves. 


TRIPOD POLES 

Training 

A versatile layout with several different exercises available. 

The first is a simple walk/halt transition exercise. The rider 

picks up a circle, aiming for the center of each pole, and asks 

for a halt for a few seconds whilst riding over each pole. By 

halting over the pole, the rider encourages the horse to think 

about their spatial awareness. This is a good exercise for the 

rider to check their aids for accuracy, making this exercise 

beneficial when preparing for a dressage test. 

Secondly, it is also a good exercise to encourage the rider to 

think about turns and accuracy in preparation of jumping is to 

establish a circle, but ride over alternate poles, covering each 

pole at least twice. This exercise helps the horse to develop a 

correct bend around the rider’s inside leg and helps the horse 

to lift through the shoulder and work through from behind. The 

closer together the poles are, the more challenging and 

demanding this exercise is. 

ZIG ZAG POLES 

Three different exercises can be 

performed with this layout. 

Firstly, similar to the scatter poles, a 

straight line can be ridden through the 

middle of the poles. This works as a good 

warm up exercise before moving on to the 

following two exercises. 

With the aim of improving the 

maintenance of impulsion through turns, 

circles and bends, the horse and rider 

start on the right rein, go over the first 

pole, and immediately circle round to the 

right, looping back to the second pole. 

Once the rider has gone over the second 

pole, the rider then circles to the left, 

looping round to the third pole, repeating 

the exercise until all poles have been 

ridden over. 

Thirdly, the points of the zig zag can be 

ridden over in a serpentine pattern, 

focusing on accuracy when turning and 

ensuring that the rider is on the correct 

line for jumping.
