The heightof the first and second floors was 3,150 millimeters, and the stages for the large and small hallswere located underground to suppress the building height. Furthermore, the small hall was onthe residential side to be in harmony with the surrounding environment. The low floor heightof 3,150 millimeters encouraged upward and downward movement of visitors and increasedinteraction density. By reviving the former civic center car entranceway as a “plaza” surroundedby trees, it became possible to recreate the bustling activity of people.JURY CITATION: This project is a good example of saving the budget by controlling thedimension and managing the internal space. The opinion that the project execution budgetcan save 20% - 30% of the budget by reducing the unnecessary size and that the violence ofmonumental buildings can be avoided through the overbearing size is persuasive. The lowfloor height encourages upward and downward movement and increases interaction density.62

HONORABLEMENTIONB-4Jetavana BuddhistTemplePublic Amenity:Social and CulturalBuildingsArchitect:Hyeung Nam Lim / Studio GAONLocation:Chuncheon-si, KoreaThe temple was designed and planned to accommodate a modern lifestyle, embracing the oldways and Buddhist doctrines. The underlying spirit and design foundation of the Center wasto restore the essential Buddhist spirit that Sakyamuni had discoursed on and preached aboutwhile sitting in Jetavana. Brick, which symbolizes the remains of Jetavana, was an obviouschoice as the building material. However, the frames were constructed as a concrete structureoverlaid with bricks. Considering the existing layout of traditional temple buildings, the pathpassing inward through the Iljumun Gate was designed to curve three times, following theoriginal elevation of the site topography.JURY CITATION: Following the idea that the form of religion has changed only because ofhistorical situations and circumstances of the time when the religion was settled, the architectchose to design the Buddhist temple in the most modern way, using bricks and steel bars. The rethinking of the relationship between religions and modernity leads to a very interestingperspective of religious architecture design.63
