IRISH CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS

Starting with our cover, St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York in the

hearts of most Irish Americans at Christmas. It is a symbol of triumph

over adversity and a great tribute to our forefathers who built it.

Next we look back at O'Brien's on Wilshire in Santa Monica, always a

treat at Christmas! Another tradition throughout Ireland and for Irish

and Irish Americans everywhere, a visit to a pub for Christmas Cheer

of the human and the libations variety. We can look ahead to next

Christmas and we can hope and pray that our cherished pubs will be

back to business as it once was.

THE WREN BOY and St Stephen's Day Tradition in Ireland.. See

page 8

Neolithic NEWGRANGE & the Winter Solstice there are the oldest

traditions in the world by far...5000 plus years. Story on page 12

Finally, another repeat of the past: AN IRISH CHRISTMAS will be

LIVESTREAMED this year...See page 27

One of the other fondly remembered Irish Traditions

that we love is the charming custom of placing a lit

candle in the window. This is a very common sight

today but the symbolism is lost for most people. The

candle signified to a weary Joseph and Mary and by

proxy anyone lost, hungry or cold that the occupants

would feed and shelter them. It has ancient roots back

to early Christian Centuries in Ireland and like Samhain

traditions, the bedrock of America's fascination with

Halloween, the custom was brought to our shores by

Irish immigrants. This one is reminiscent of the Irish

American and American custom too. I've been told by

Irish friends that this was very big throughout Ireland

from the 1950s to 70s but not so much now.

Some historians and storytellers also claim that during

the Penal Times, that's as far back as Cromwell, in

Ireland; Catholic priests were forbidden to perform

Mass so the candle acted as a covert signal that the

occupier was a Catholic believer and that mass could

be held on the premises

ANCIENT TRADITIONS HANDED DOWN

FOR CENTURIES

Today, many if not most homes in Ireland display a

Christmas crib, which contains Mary, Joseph, and the

baby Jesus as well as shepherds and animals. This was

not always so but the practice dates back as far as the

Ninth Century when Churches, Monasteries and

Convents would have elaborate Nativity Scenes to help

educate the public about the story of Christmas and

Christ's humble birth. Wealthy merchants started the

practice of having a Creche at their home.

Mistletoe has been very popular in Ireland as a

Winter/Christmas decoration since Pagan Times. The

Middle Ages was the period when Mistletoe started to

become associated with Kissing and being hung in

doorways. The custom is much more popular in

Ireland than the US and it is pretty hard to miss getting

a few kisses through the 12 Days! of Christmas!

Nollaig na mBan. 'Wom en's Christ m as' also known as

Old Christ m as and more commonly known as the

Feast of the Epiphany, celebrated twelve days after

Christ m as Day, January 6 is the day that the Magi

reached the Christ-child in Bethlehem and so the

origin of Christmas gift giving among Christians.

In Ireland there is a different take on the day...it is a day

off for the ladies in the family, Mothers especially and

the housework and cooking chores were to be carried

out by the boys and men. Over the years, many a tale

of semi disaster and great humor have been told in

Pubs over the antics of well meaning males carrying on

the tradition!

In Catholic Ireland, this was also a Holy Day and also a

day throughout the Middle Ages through the Victorian

Age for TWELFTH NIGHT Celebrat ions!

In the Middle Ages throughout parts of Europe and in

particular England so the custom could well have

spread to Ireland, Nobility and their servants would

switch roles during the Christmas Season.

This might be the origin of the custom in Ireland.

MIDNIGHT MASS and CHRISTMAS MUSIC

One of the most common Christmas traditions in

Ireland is to attend Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve

or Christmas Morning. Every other denomination

has well attended Yuletide services too. Christmas

carols are sung at these ceremonies. Singing is

second nature to the Irish so Christmas Carols are

sung by thousands of voices through- out the land

at every Christmas Service. Exception- ally

good choirs abound too at churches of every

denomination and almost every Catholic parish; they

all take great pride in having a splendid Christmas Eve

or Christmas Morning Program.

Caroling from door to door is also still practiced and a

lot of neighbors organize a chorus and have a lot of

fun as a dram or two is offered as a reward for the

song!

Irish Christmas Traditions

The Wren Boys and

St. Stephen's Day

St Stephen's Day, December 26 is one of nine

official Holidays in Ireland. In Northern Ireland and

throughout the United Kingdom, the day is also

known as Boxing Day,

also an official Holiday.

The Feast Day of St. Stephen commemorates the

first Christian Martyr.

He was stoned to death by an angry mob under the

direction and urging of Saul of Tarsus, who later

became St. Paul.

In Ireland, the day after Christmas is a common day

for visiting friends and family

and hosting neighbors and family. In Ireland, in some

districts, the gentry would have

a kind of open house and offer food to the neighbors.

We have also heard of open houses at

some parishes but we have no written source for

that. We do know the custom of visiting and being

called upon by relatives and friends was very

common throughout Ireland and is carried on to this

day.

The open house custom the day after Christmas

extended

to Irish-America and is still fairly common in Texas

and

the Southern US.

The Wren Boys are also a prominent fixture in Irish

lore on

St. Stephen's Day. The practice of a group of singing

boys going around from house to house on St.

Stephen's Day

was a long held tradition in Ireland for hundreds of

years.

The wren, the wren, the king of all

birds,

On Saint Stephen's Day was caught in

the furze.

Up with the kettle and down with the

pan,

Pray give us a penny to bury the wren.

...Traditional Irish Verse

Saint Stephen, First Christian Martyr

Sometimes the boys would go around in costumes,

or deck themselves in straw and blackface. In 1840,

the Mayor of Cork issued a proclamation against the

signing processions of boys on the grounds of the

cruelty inflicted on the hapless wren.

The two most common reasons for the custom are

both Irish Legends. The first is that it was a wren who

inadvertently

gave away the hiding place of the aforementioned St.

Stephen, the early Christian martyr.

The second legend of the origin of the custom goes

back about 1100 hundred years to the Norse

invasions. A group of native Irish were going to

counter attack a Norse stronghold and

their hiding place was given away by a wren who

pecked on a drum that had some crumbs of bread

dropped upon it.

In both versions of the legends, the boys seek

revenge on the wren for its betrayal.

For better or for worse, only in the past 30 to 40 years

this custom fading from popular culture in Ireland.

Says a spokesperson for OPW. This year, ?everyone will

be able to experience this wonderful phenomenon from

any location around the world?. Viewers in the US and

around the world will be able to see the Solstice online.

The event will be live-streamed from within the

Chamber on from December 20 by Irelands Office of

Public Works (OPW).OPW.IE LINK The traditional

gathering for the Winter Solstice at the Neolithic

Passage Tomb on December 21 was cancelled this year

due to Covid-19 pandemics. The Irish Government and

local officials are urging people to stay away and the

facility is closed and guarded from over zealous

solstice fans.

The winter solstice officially occurs at 5:02 a.m. ET

Monday in the United States, marking the

astronomical beginning of winter and the moment at

which the sun?s rays are directly over the Tropic of

Capricorn, USA Today reported. It also marks the

Northern Hemisphere.

The winter solstice varies from year to year and can

fall anywhere from Dec. 20-23, but Dec. 20 and Dec.

21 are statistically the most common dates on which

it occurs.

This year, the solstice coincides with another special

astronomical event: A rare planetary alignment will

allow Jupiter and Saturn to appear closer together in

the Monday evening sky than they have in nearly

eight centuries, and the phenomenon will not

happen again till next until 2080. Because the Earth

orbits the sun tilted on its axis ? instead of perfectly

upright solstice means the Northern

Hemisphere leans away from the sun on this day,

resulting in the

least amount of direct sunlight received in a single

day all year, while the Southern Hemisphere will

enjoy its lengthiest sun-filled day, the Post reported.

By the way, The word ?solstice? is rooted in the Latin

word solstitium, meaning ?sun standing still.?

KERRY IRISH PRODUCTIONS KEEPING

THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS ALIVE

Streaming AN IRISH CHRISTMAS and Releasing a

new A KERRY CHRISTMAS CD have been the

resplendent answer to the woes brought on by The

Pandemic. California's Kerry Irish Productions has

been working quietly and with much determination

over the past months. The company has taken time

to consider new projects and new directions that

have led to a new choral cd ?A Kerry Christ m as, a

US-Ireland collaboration with The Kerry School of

Music and Performing Arts, re-scheduling tours,

updating the company website, setting up an

on-line shop and working with a development team

on Celtic Wings - a new company show. It has been

a very busy creative time! Added to that is an

invitation from Lobero Theatre, Santa Barbara and

Clark Center, Arroyo Grande to present an on-line

presentation of highlights from An Irish Christmas!

The presentation, originally prepared for PBS and

shown in various states as part of PBS?autumn

pledge drives will be presented at Clark Center

under their Wint er Dat e Night Series.
