CHRISTMAS AROUND 

THE WORLD 

Christmas Around the World began in 1942 as a salute to 

American Allies in World War II. The tribute consisted of 

one strong symbol: a single tree, decorated by volunteers 

whose native countries were allies with the U.S. This year, 

the Museum’s 45-foot Grand Tree takes center stage in 

the Rotunda with 30,000 lights, 1,000 ornaments and the 

Peanuts Gang. It’s surrounded by more than 50 smaller 

trees beautifully decorated by volunteers from Chicago’s 

ethnic communities to represent their various cultures 

and holiday traditions. Stroll through the trees, enjoy 

intermittent falling “snow” and savor the performances 

on the Holiday Stage. Daily performances are listed on 

pages 6–7 of this guide. 

HOLIDAYS OF LIGHT 

In 1994, Holidays of Light was added to MSI’s beloved 

holiday exhibition featuring non-Christian celebrations 

including Chinese New Year, Diwali, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, 

and Visakha Puja Day. Today, this multicultural display 

continues to showcase holidays that celebrate light 

and enlightenment.

Explore the 50-year creative legacy of famed 

cartoonist Charles Schulz and his beloved Peanuts 

gang in Charlie Brown and the Great Exhibit. Schulz 

researched, wrote, designed, and drew each Peanuts 

comic strip, revolutionizing the cartoon world and 

charming 355 million readers. 

Through original 

art, memorabilia 

and fun activities 

for the family, 

you’ll relive 

Schulz’s unique 

brand of wit and 

wisdom; discover how characters like Charlie Brown, 

Snoopy and Lucy were developed over decades; 

and view a recreation of Schulz’s California studio. 

Enter the recreation of Snoopy’s doghouse to see 

the eclectic belongings of this unique dog. And kids 

will have a chance to exercise their own Schulz-like 

creativity with activities like making animations for 

a zoetrope, tapping out a tune on Schroeder’s piano 

or donning a Joe Cool costume.
