What a year 

A year ago Pennywise, like 

many other businesses, was 

racing towards Christmas 

and the pre-planned two 

week vacation – our annual 

recoup and regroup time. 

Little did we know how 

much ‘rest’ was ahead for us. 

After sliding into 2020 – 

the year of clarity – and like 

most New Years anticipating 

great and joyous opportunities 

and adventures ahead, 

2020 started gently, kindly 

and predictably. 

Then COVID hit, as you all 

know. Many of us small business 

we were smacked upside 

the head out of nowhere... and 

we ground to a halt. One day 

we had customers and clients, 

the next day we did not. That 

chain reaction saw Pennywise 

close down for 8 weeks. 

In preparation for reopening 

with smaller overhead we 

moved from our downtown 

location to my basement. In 

the summer we were nice and 

cool, and we have invested in 

down-filled slippers for onsite 

staff for the fall and winter season. 

We still have 4 employees 

working from home. 

We are cruising into this 

2nd wave of COVID less 

naive. We know better how to 

protect ourselves and others 

from catching the virus with 

a few simple precautions... 

we eat healthy, stay active, 

wear a mask, wash our hands 

and keep our distance. Keep 

our bubbles small (work and 

home) and abstain from large 

social gatherings. We will do 

whatever we can to help minimize 

this very real threat to 

society, our economy and the 

health care system. 

Because of you, our donators/readers, 

who chipped 

in when cash flow was low - 

and advertisers who jumped 

back into the paper when we 

resurfaced, we are still here 

and have laid nobody off! The 

provincial and federal incentives 

have been helpful for 

businesses and for citizens. 

I am most thankful for my 

staff. We are a lean group, 

each person responsible for 

a distinctive piece of the puzzle. 

They, who have cheerfully 

followed me from store front 

to basement, from paper to 

digital and now through our 

next challenge, implementing 

a whole new classified intake 

and accounting system. They 

are an amazing group - propping 

each other up as needed, 

when the stresses of this new 

world are too much. 

I am so grateful to each of 

my co-workers for the care 

and attention they put into 

the Pennywise. We are nothing 

without our staff, as we 

are nothing without our readers 

and advertisers.

As many of you might now, we have a $400,000 fundraising 

milestone of December 31, 2020. As of December 10, we have 

approximately $330,000 in the bank. We have a number of 

grant applications in, and are hoping to hear back on those

the Kootenay Co-op in Nelson , and continue to reach out 

through our social channels.

heading into Christmas, and of course, we’re in the midst of

RDCK Board highlights 

In lieu of their annual Christmas lunch, the RDCK Board of 

Directors made a donation of $2,000 spread out among eight 

regional food banks, each receiving $250. 

Janice Morrison has been appointed to the Board of 

Directors 

Effective November 23, 2020, the City of Nelson appointed 

Councillor Janice Morrison as the RDCK Board Director and 

Councillor Keith Page as the alternate Board Director for a one 

year term. Director Morrison replaces Brittny Anderson, who 

served on the board since July 2020 and was recently elected as 

MLA for the Nelson-Creston riding.

a volume of tangible outcomes, the program has been 

providing excess meals to peers and raising funds for the 

Selkirk College Student Food Bank.

The prepared meals 

include an assortment 

of soups, roast beef 

dinners, braised boneless 

shortrib and many 

other specific menu 

items that provide students 

in the cook program 

with the training 

they need as they 

proceed along their 

journey to become 

Red Seal chefs. So far, more than 

100 meals have been provided to 

students in both the Castlegar and 

Nelson student housing facilities. 

To raise much-needed money for 

the Selkirk College Student Food 

Bank, staff have also been able to 

purchase some meals by donation. 

“I’m proud of the way students 

have been able to focus on their 

education with the adapted learning 

environment that has been 

created to ensure safe space for 

all of us,” says Chef Simon Parr, a 

veteran Professional Cook Training 

Program instructor. “The 

more immediate satisfaction that 

students get from serving freshly 

prepared menu items to customers 

has been diminished because of 

the pandemic, but they know that 

those who receive these meals are 

still able to appreciate the careful 

attention that went into making it.”

Since everyone in the healthcare field 

is wearing masks now, recognizing 

people can be challenging. That’s why 

the Kootenay Boundary Physicians 

Association decided to get face buttons 

printed. 

“We all need to do our part to stop 

the spread of COVID, but we don’t 

want to lose the human connection that 

comes from seeing people’s faces,” said 

Dr. Sue Babensee. 

The initial idea came from KBRH 

Radiologist Dr. Sue Babensee, which 

was further supported unanimously 

by the Kootenay Boundary Physician 

Association (KBPA) Working Group. 

The KBPA is supplying every Physician 

and IH Staff Member of the Kootenay 

Boundary Regional Hospital with 

a face vutton. The goal of the KBPA 

#KBRHSmiles Face Button Project is to 

support patient-centered care by eliminating 

or reducing a level of fear and 

anxiety for patients who find comfort 

in seeing the smiling faces of their providers 

and health care team members. 

With the new safety policies around 

COVID-19, such as mask-wearing, this 

is a strategy to help accomplish the best 

possible experience for the patients 

during their health care visits and also 

support personal interaction within the 

hospital with physicians and IH staff 

members. 

Usually, our communications team 

would go to KBRH and take photos 

of the physicians and IH staff for this 

project; however, during COVID, we 

have asked everyone to take their photograph 

and upload them. So far, so 

good. The first batch of face buttons 

has been delivered to KBRH and are 

now being worn by physicians and IH 

staff. The #KBRHSmiles Face Button 

Project runs through December 2020 

at KBRH, and news has spread; it looks 

like Kootenay Lake Hospital KLH Nelson 

will take on the project too!

Regional tourism 

receives COVID-19 

recovery funding 

boost 

The Kootenay Rockies Tourism 

Association will receive $2.3 million to 

invest in regional tourism development. 

As part of the Province’s Stronger BC 

economic recovery plan B.C.’s six tourism 

regions will receive a total of $13.6 

million to create employment opportunities, 

attract new businesses and 

spur economic diversification within 

communities. 

“We recognize these are challenging 

times and we appreciate the sacrifices 

everyone is making to flatten the 

curve and be safe,” said Melanie Mark, 

Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and 

Sport. “This funding for regional tourism 

organizations was a call to action 

to help BC communities to be ready to 

welcome travellers as soon as it’s safe to 

do so and it reflects our Government’s 

commitment to work collaboratively 

and support people to get back to 

work.” 

Examples of regional tourism development 

projects include accessibility 

upgrades along a scenic route, connecting 

tourism experiences across a region 

such as overnight trip itineraries, points 

of interest along highway corridors, 

and supporting the development of 

more Indigenous tourism experiences. 

Projects proposed will be determined 

in partnership with local and regional 

governments, First Nations, non-profits 

and regional tourism management 

organizations. 

“The Kootenay Rockies region has 

been deeply impacted by the COVID- 

19 pandemic. Our tourism businesses 

many of whom are small, seasonal 

and locally owned, are extremely concerned 

about their ability to continue 

operating in 2021,” said Kathy Cooper, 

CEO, Kootenay Rockies Tourism 

Association. “This investment will be 

instrumental in supporting our tourism 

destination’s recovery and resiliency. 

We look forward to engaging 

with our partners to ensure the funds 

address major experiential gaps, align 

with B.C.’s Strategic Framework for 

Tourism and our regional Destination 

Development Strategy, thereby resulting 

in the biggest economic impact to 

our destination.”

Engagement with communities to 

review existing or identify new regional 

initiatives will take place between now 

and January 2021, with final decisions 

on projects made by the Ministry of 

Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport in 

March 2021. 

All projects are to start by December 

31, 2021 and will be completed by 

March 31, 2023.

painting of Crawford Bay’s Community 

Hall to support a fundraiser 

to rejuvenate and preserve the 1938 

building. Paterson is well-known for his

We loved that Anita used her 

surname to name her contraption: 

“The VIBEration Bracelet”. What is 

it exactly? It is a bracelet that every 

student and teacher could wear. 

The bracelet would vibrate when 

recess starts or ends as well as for 

the lunch break. But more than 

that, the doors would be automated 

for this system, allowing everyone 

to enter or exit through doors without 

touching them. To avoid having 

too many people in the bathroom, 

the bracelet will also change colour 

and would become green if there is 

room to enter, red if it’s full! 

We really appreciated that Anita 

clearly mentioned what her challenge 

was before explaining how 

her contraption works. Her entry 

was both innovative and creative. 

It’s not Anita’s first year of participation 

either. She usually sends 

GLOWS contraptions designed 

by her students and this year, we 

are so glad to be able to highlight 

her! Anita is a Grade Six teacher 

in Nakusp where she lives with her 

family that includes three kids. She 

enjoys learning new things and 

playing outside, hiking, gardening 

and skiing. One day she hopes to 

learn to play an instrument.

Inspiring hope with 

intergenerational connections 

The Nelson CARES Society and the Nelson Civic Theatre 

Society are bringing the social and arts and culture sectors 

together in an inclusive and intergenerational project that 

explores the hopes and aspirations of different generations 

for our post-pandemic world. Lynzee Bewcyk, Intergenerational 

Project Coordinator for Nelson CARES Society and 

Jan Wright the President of the Nelson Civic Theatre Society 

Board are inviting people of all ages to participate in an online 

contest to tell their story through video of how they think and 

feel about their hopes for the future. 

For many of us, the impact of COVID -19 has increased feelings 

of social isolation, loneliness and has highlighted many 

areas where we can do better as a society. Children, youth and 

adults talk about missing their friends and social activities 

and as Bewcyk notes, “Before the pandemic, social isolation 

is what many seniors may have already been experiencing as 

well as feelings of being invisible and often dismissed”. This 

intergenerational project aims to connect people from different 

generations to learn about each other while providing 

a sense of community belonging through producing a video 

about inclusion.

programming, events, and services for its communities, is a 

perfect fit with this very creative project. As a senior, Wright is, 

“Excited to be working with and learning from younger generations 

on a project that will use video and digital media as a 

way of reflecting and capturing the social hopes of generations 

experiencing this period in time.” 

The aim of the project is to raise awareness of how different 

generations think and feel about their hopes for the future. 

Entrants are being asked to create and submit a video that is 

around 3-5 minutes long answering the question: “What are 

your hopes for our post-pandemic world?” The video must 

involve at least one intergenerational relationship. For example, 

a youth working with someone from the boomer generation 

or a teen and their grandparent. 

People are asked to follow the advice of our health care professionals 

and The BC Centre for Disease Control to practice 

safe social distancing while creating their videos. This includes 

taking the necessary measures of using a mask, washing hands 

often, and keeping a two-metre distance from others. 

The contest is open to emerging and advanced videographers. 

There will be prizes awarded to each category as well 

as one people’s choice award. 1. Emerging – 1st prize 2. 

Advanced – 1st prize 3. People’s Choice Award 

Video entries open January 4th, 2021 and submissions are 

due on February 28th, 2021. Entries will be shown on the Nelson 

Civic Theatre Society’s website. The public will have an 

opportunity to watch the videos and vote for their favourites.

Nelson Girl Guide wins 2020 

Kootenay Contraption Contest 

Emily McCandlish is a problem solver. It was clear from the 

moment our judges reviewed her contraption that we reached 

a kid who understood the purpose of the Kootenay Contraption 

Contest and delivered a contraption that clearly and simply 

answered the 2020 Kootenay Contraption Question: 

“Think about a challenge you’re facing at school or homeschool. 

Create a contraption to solve this problem so that students/Educators 

of the future won’t have the same challenge.” 

Emily gets distracted when she’s at homeschool, so she created 

the “Distract Be Gone” hat to help her stay focused on her 

school work, drown out noises and block distracting screens. 

“After three days of continuous talking and drawing her 

contraption, I was pretty proud of the results she came up 

with. Emily really got into this competition with a series of 

revisions to her plan before reaching the final design. I guess 

all those enthusiastic late night conversations about her Contraption 

paid off! We are in the process of building the Distract-Be-Gone 

for real world testing soon!” said her father, 

Brad McCandlish. 

Emily’s solution-orientated contraption has won her the 

grand prize bundle donated by Nelson-based business, Phoenix 

Computers + Technology! Emily has one more distracting 

screen now because her prize bundle includes a Samsung Galaxy 

Tab A tablet, Philips bluetooth headset and a Polk Audio 

waterproof speaker. The GLOWS team hopes if she does build 

her contraption that she can integrate her new bluetooth headset 

into her design! 

The prize bundle wasn’t the only reward for the eight year 

old third grade winner! Emily’s Distract Be Gone Hat earned 

her the Inventor Badge through her Nelson Community Girl 

Guides unit. We connected with her leader Anne Simonen to 

find out more. 

“It was a natural connection!” said Simonen. “They have to 

connect with a female inventor for one step of the badge, and 

I’m an engineer, so I did some creativity exercises and brainstorming 

with them, and it was up to them to finish it.” 

Contraptions were judged based on the following criteria: if 

the contraption answered the question, clarity, presentation, 

creativity, innovation and of course – if the contraption solved 

the problem. 

“What we really appreciated with Emily’s contraption is 

that she clearly named what her problem was. Not only was 

her innovative, but she clearly gave it a lot of thought and we 

could identify that through her explanation. Being distracted 

is most likely a challenge a lot of students are facing at school 

or homeschool and we thought the Distract Be Gone Hat 

solved this problem,” said Laura Vache, KAST’s Community 

Engagement Coordinator

arriving at our homes at 

this time of year, so what do 

we do with all the packaging? 

How can we reduce the 

amount that goes into our 

garbage? Let’s try to recycle 

or reuse as much as we can. 

There are three systems 

for recycling in the 

north Kootenay Lake area, 

depending on where you 

live. If you live in Kaslo 

village you have bi-weekly 

curbside pickup in your 

blue bin for some items, 

Kaslo Transfer Station for 

the rest. If you live in RDCK 

Area D, then you can take 

your recycling to the Kaslo 

Transfer Station near the 

airport (Sunday, Tuesday, 

Friday 10 – 3 except stat 

holidays) or if you live at 

the north end you can take 

some items to the Marblehead 

Transfer Station 

(Wednesday, Saturday 10 

– 2 except stat holidays), 

the rest to Kaslo Transfer 

Station. 

What and where to

gift bags, greeting cards, 

cardboard boxes (flattened)

Kaslo is the first 

community in the West 

Kootenay region to officially 

adopt a 100% renewable 

energy plan and is leading 

the way to a healthy, clean, 

and strong future. 

Following up on the Village 

of Kaslo’s 2019 commitment 

to transition to 

100% renewable energy 

by 2050 and to collaborate 

with other local governments, 

community stakeholders 

and experts in the 

region to develop a plan, 

Kaslo village council voted 

unanimously Tuesday night 

to adopt the West Kootenay 

100% Renewable Energy 

Plan.

of Kaslo has adopted 

the 100% Renewable 

Energy Plan and has been 

the first local government in 

the region to do so. I would 

like to thank the West Kootenay 

EcoSociety for their 

assistance and guidance 

over the past year in the 

development of this plan.

Dunlop for their participation 

in the process on behalf 

of the Village of Kaslo,” says 

Mayor Suzan Hewat. 

“I look forward to seeing 

how some of these initiatives

the next five years. Our 

Council hopes to work with 

our local group, the Kaslo 

Climate Action Team on 

some of these initiatives,” 

the mayor adds. The village 

is embarking on a review 

of its Official Community 

Plan in 2021. 

Kaslo is one of nine local 

governments that has been 

working with West Kootenay 

EcoSociety for the past 

year to develop the 100% 

renewable energy plan. 

Along with regional strategies, 

each local government 

has prioritized the actions it 

can take that are most relevant 

to their community. 

For instance, most of Kaslo’s 

non-renewable energy 

use comes from passenger 

and commercial vehicles. 

Although buildings use 

a lot of energy, most of it 

already comes from renewable 

electricity sources. 

The next step is for the 

other eight local governments 

to bring the plan 

before their councils for 

adoption and then to begin 

to implement the plan.
