Welcome from the Headmaster 

Welcome to our Annual Report & Donor Roll for 2019 – 2020. It has been a year unlike any other, and I would like to thank all 

those members of our global community who have come together and provided their encouragement and support through 

what has been an unprecedented time in the education of our young people at Shrewsbury. Our focus has remained unchanged, 

and as successive generations of Salopians leave School, not least those of the Class of 2020, we share in their parents’ hope 

that they flourish in life. Floreat Salopia! 

Among this year’s many highlights, we were most appreciative to receive two prestigious national awards. A Community 

Outreach Award, in recognition of our commitment to sharing our resources, and enabling and strengthening others in 

their work. Our plans for collaborating and engaging positively beyond our gates are growing, and this award is a welcome 

milestone on that journey. Furthermore, we were delighted to be named as the overall winner of the competition, and 

as the Independent School of the Year 2020. 

School communities thrive when they have a deep sense of common purpose; when they have the energy and 

resources to adapt and evolve. This year our common purpose has been to maintain the safe and sustained provision 

of the School to its pupils in ever-changing circumstances. The capacities of Salopians for adaptivity and evolution 

have been very much in demand – and they have risen to the challenge admirably. 

Throughout, our alumni, friends and supporters have been generous in their consistency of support, and ongoing 

interest in the furtherance of the School. I would like to thank them for their generosity, and reassure them of 

a warm welcome back to the School as soon as we are able. 

This year, we have looked at the opportunities before us as we set out on a new decade together, 2020 – 

2030. Our eyes are fixed firmly on one central mission, to provide the best possible learning experience 

for Salopians, so that they thrive at School and go on to lead lives of possibility, purpose and goodness. 

Our renewed commitment to our means tested bursary programme for the initial phase of this decade 

is therefore, a natural fit to articulate with the demands of the world around us as we seek to enhance 

the unique nature of a Shrewsbury Education, and to build creatively on our heritage.

From the Chairman 

I am very pleased to present the Shrewsbury School Foundation’s 2019 – 2020 annual report. 

This was clearly very much a year of two halves with the first half a period of normal operations 

and the second dominated by the pandemic. Despite this difficult operating backdrop however, 

the Foundation has achieved some notable successes under the supervision of our new Director 

of Development, Oliver Jackson-Hutt. 

The Foundation’s long running Capital Campaign, which has resulted in so many significant 

buildings being built or refurbished, has now come to a close with the completion of the Barnes 

heatre. For all those who have played a role in this critical funding effort, please accept my 

heartfelt thanks and appreciation. These buildings represent a hugely significant legacy and 

important part of the School’s infrastructure. 

As we have previously indicated, we are now turning the focus of the Foundation to raising 

funds for bursarial support. Bursaries for qualified means-tested pupils are in high demand and 

are very much in line with the School’s social mission. You will be hearing more from us about 

this exciting new bursary campaign over the coming year. 

As the Foundation navigates carefully through these difficult times, I do hope that you will 

join me in celebrating our achievements, as the funds raised through your charitable support 

markedly improve the ability of Shrewsbury School to deliver the finest education to our pupils.

From the Director of Development 

Since joining the School at the start of the year, I have been appreciative of the warm welcome extended 

to me by the Shrewsbury School Foundation Chairman, Trustees, the Governing Body of the School, 

Headmaster, and wider Common Room, but perhaps most of all, our pupils. 

2020 has not been a year which has had to seek out its changes or challenges, and I have been reminded 

at many turns of the ingenuity, kindness, and capacity of colleagues and our young people alike to inspire 

and enable the new. It has been a year when we have all had to see, think, work and learn in new ways, 

and today’s Salopians (old and new) carry great promise for the new that is tomorrow, and a world 

beyond the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. I thank them all for helping me to settle in at what has been a tricky 

time for all of us. 

Yet through this, our loyal supporters have continued to stand with us and support the School through 

means of their philanthropic giving. This support is vital to our mission, and I would like to take 

this opportunity to thank each and every donor, both to the recently completed Capital Campaign 

(2010 – 2020) which I have had the privilege of bringing to its conclusion; and to those who have 

refreshed or made new commitments to our next chapter, 2020 – 2030, the initial phase of which is 

considered in more detail later in this publication. 

I very much hope to have the opportunity to meet a good number of you in the time ahead, 

and in advance of this I extend both my thanks for your generosity and consistency in supporting the 

Shrewsbury School Foundation, and my very best wishes to you and your families for sustained health, 

happiness and prosperity in 2021.

New Campaign 2020 – 2030 

A Vision for Shrewsbury’s Future 

With its auspicious founding by Royal Charter in 1552, and subsequent identification as one of the 

‘Great’ public schools by the Clarendon Commission in 1868, it should come as no surprise that the 

foresight of the School brought about the establishment, in 1965, of the Shrewsbury School Foundation. 

It is thought to be the first such charitable foundation associated with a British Independent School, and 

to this day, the Foundation exists to create, support and enhance the provisions of Shrewsbury School, 

including its commitment to the provision of means-tested bursaries. 

Following the success of the last ten years, and the major Capital Campaign undertaken, and completed, 

the Trustees of the Shrewsbury School Foundation have turned their attention to the next ten years. They 

have identified the aspiration to increase the number of young people attending the School who would be 

able to take full advantage of the unique opportunity a Shrewsbury education can provide, were it not for 

their financial circumstances. Moreover, with a strengthened focus on social responsibility, we are seeking to 

increase the number of ‘transformative’ means tested bursaries the Foundation is able to offer. Our definition 

of ‘transformative’ is enabling young people requiring 75% - 110% remission of fees to be able to attend 

the School. 

Fundraising will form a vital part of the School’s capacity to deliver its mission, influencing positively a 

number of the School’s strategic objectives to 2030. We have devised a new, ten year global Advancement 

strategy, which sets out an ambitious new campaign with an initial focus of supporting means-tested 

bursaries; contributing to the School’s commitment to meet its strategic objective of increasing the 

number of transformative bursaries to a target of 40 pupils annually by 2030.

New Campaign 2020 – 2030 

Donor Roll 

Following the successful Capital Campaign which concluded at the end of July 2020, 

our attentions are turning for the initial phase of the next ten years towards means 

tested bursaries, renewing our commitment and efforts in this vital area, and enabling the 

School to welcome as broad, socially diverse and representative a group of young people 

as possible. 

With the new campaign period programmed to run for the next ten years, from 01.08.20 

– 31.07.31, we have taken the opportunity to review and reshape our giving clubs, 

to terrace the recognition of our donors in a refreshed way. 

Our most honoured donors are invited to join a leadership circle, in recognition of 

their commitment. 

With this Donor Roll, we recognise all donors who have made a monetary gift, and / or 

quantified pledge to the School in or for the period 01.08.20 – 31.07.31. 

In placing donors within giving clubs, the sum of their gifts and pledges is considered 

including any Gift Aid or Gift Matching component, where applicable. Similarly, where 

donors have made quantified commitments to legacy gifts in their Will, these are 

included as part of their placement reference within giving clubs. 

This donor roll will be rendered both digitally, and in due 

course, in a permanent installation at the School. 

Within giving clubs, donors are recognised in the format: 

preferred name, surname, and where applicable their House 

and Year. 

Donors are arranged alphabetically, by surname. 

Donors who have chosen to make their gifts / pledges 

anonymously are rendered as such. Where applicable, 

their House and Year are stated. 

On request, families and households are recognised with 

grouped names, as are the citation of titles and both pre and 

post-nominals. 

Olim Cives, we recognise donors who are now deceased, 

including those who have given anonymously, in italics.

There are a number of ways you can make a gift to the 

Shrewsbury School Foundation. In joining our global 

community of donors you may prefer to make an individual 

gift, an ongoing (regular) gift on a monthly, quarterly, 

six monthly, or annual basis, or give in other ways. As a 

registered charity, where possible, we are able to reclaim 

Gift Aid on donations. 

The 1552 Legacy Society 

Some of our supporters have also decided to leave a 

gift to the Shrewsbury School Foundation in their Will. 

We recognise legators during their lifetime through 

membership of the 1552 Society, so called in recognition 

of the School’s year of foundation by Royal Charter.

Capital Campaign 2010 – 2020 

A Celebration of Success for Shrewsbury 

At the end of July 2020 we concluded 

a ten year Capital Campaign 

which has put in place touchstone 

infrastructure facilities which will provide 

successive generations of Salopians 

with cutting-edge learning and teaching 

environments. The provisions span the 

academic disciplines, inspiring creativity, 

and confirming the School’s place 

as ‘one of the finest coeducational 

boarding schools in the country with 

a powerful global reach.’ 

Here we celebrate, thank, honour and 

recognise all those who contributed 

financially during this campaign, and also 

wish to recognise those many others who 

also gave in other ways. 

In addition to four large projects, a number 

of smaller projects, remodelling, renovating, 

enhancing or extending discrete facilities 

within the School took place. These ran 

alongside our long-standing commitment 

to supporting means tested 

bursaries, which continued through 

the period. 

2015 saw the realisation of Hodgson Hall, 

a large, new, multi-disciplinary academic 

learning and teaching facility with a 

recessed lecture theatre, expansive lobby 

and atrium, and an array of flexible, bright, 

classrooms and work spaces for pupils 

and staff. 

2016 introduced the Chatri Design 

Centre, providing new and bespoke 

facilities for creative design and 

engineering specialisms, with state of 

the art equipment, a large workroom 

environment, and complementary 

classrooms and tutorial spaces. 

2017 heralded the introduction of a 

sensitive and elegant reinterpretation of 

the Moser Library, enhancing its capacity 

for special collections, exhibitions, tutorials, 

and private study; with a reading room, 

a classroom, and a range of other study 

spaces which enhance and integrate the 

library within the School and curriculum. 

2020 countered the challenge of the 

global pandemic with the successful 

completion of the Barnes Theatre, and 

Ashton Auditorium within. The generous 

leadership of Sir David and Lady Barnes 

enabled the project’s completion. 

The theatre is named in the family’s honour 

as a living legacy to Sir David and Lady Barnes’ 

wish that ‘it will play a pivotal role in 

Shrewsbury’s theatrical offering for many 

years to come.’

Sir David Barnes

Dr Helen Brown, Director of Drama, shares her initial response to the 

remarkable provision of the Barnes Theatre. 

In September 2020, the Drama Faculty moved into its new home, the Barnes Theatre. 

Thanks to the generosity of Sir David and Lady Barnes, and the wider Salopian community, 

students at Shrewsbury now have access to a sector-leading Performing Arts building. 

The intimate re-configured auditorium is served by generous Front of House facilities in 

the form of the Shrewsbury School American Foundation Lobby, whilst backstage there are 

workshops, dressing rooms and cutting-edge sound and lighting facilities. The building also 

provides teaching space for both practical and written work, with classrooms and studios 

for drama and dance. Studio One, with its mirrored wall, ballet barre and sprung floor 

has transformed the provision for dance within the school, and we are now able to offer 

weekly classes in ballet, tap, jazz and contemporary. Despite the challenges of COVID-19, 

the School has been inventive in enabling a number of live, socially distanced 

performances to take place. In October, the Fifth Form and Upper Sixth Drama 

students took to the stage for the first time with their assessed devised performances. 

This was a showcase of the originality, imagination and talent of Salopians, with both 

year groups producing engaging, entertaining and sometimes heart-breaking work. 

In the latter part of term, we have hosted two hilarious house plays, performed by 

the students of Severn Hill and The Grove.
