Houston
County Sheriff
Cullen Talton
By: Kristin Moriarty
HHJ Managing Editor
Picture this: a man who became a dairy farmer straight out of high
school went on to serve as a county commissioner for two terms.
And then, even with having no prior law enforcement experience,
he became the sheriff of Houston County and is going into his 14th
term unopposed.
No, it’s no picture. That man is actually Houston County Sheriff
Cullen Talton. Talton first took office January 1, 1973, and according
to the Georgia Sheriff’s Association, he is currently the longest “actively
serving” sheriff in Georgia. Out of the 14 times he has run for sheriff,
he only was challenged four times.
“I love serving the people of Houston County,” Talton said. “Never did
I expect to be in office this long, but I guess it gets in your blood. I’ve got
a great department, and my family and I have always had great support
from the community. That’s one thing I’ve never forgotten; that this
office belongs to the people of Houston County. I just really appreciate
the opportunity to serve.”
Talton was born in Bonaire on October 16, 1932. He has lived in
Bonaire his entire life and still resides there today. His ancestors first
came to Houston County in the late 1800s. His father was Henry
Cullen Talton and mother, Lois. Talton has a brother and sister, and
one sister who passed away when they were children. Talton’s father ran
a grocery store—Talton’s Grocery—in Bonaire for 45 years, and later
went into the dairy farm business.

Talton went to school in Bonaire until his senior year of high
school. During that time, he attended Warner Robins High School,
graduating in 1949. Just before graduating, Talton met his future wife,
Peggy. Talton was 17, and Peggy was 16. The two married after Talton
graduated, but Peggy had one more year of school. Together they have
two daughters and two sons; Carlene, Patricia “Patty,” Cully and Neal.
They also have four grandchildren, three girls and one boy, and nine
great grandchildren, eight boys and one girl.
“I loved my wife,” Talton said. “We were married for 68 years. She was
my best friend, and sadly, she passed away two years ago. I met her my
senior year of high school and the way she would tell how we met was
her friends said, ‘I bet you can’t get a date with that boy from Bonaire,’”
Talton said laughing. “I was sort of shy back then, but we went on a
date, and I thought she was the silliest girl I ever met—just kidding,”
he added. “But we fell in love. She did an excellent job raising the kids,
and really a lot of kids in the community. She had such a big heart and
did so much good that most people didn’t ever know about. I also say
she is the reason I was elected as sheriff because she would walk the
neighborhoods, knocking on doors and talking with people about me.
I love her so.”
In 1952, Talton got into the dairy farm business with his father, of
which later he became the sole owner/operator. He then took up an
interest in politics and ran for Houston County Commissioner. His
inspiration to run for office came from his father, who served nearly 28
years on the school board.
“I served two terms on the Houston County Board of Commissioners,”
Talton said. “I enjoyed it, and it was very interesting. But during my
time on the board, I saw a need for improving the sheriff’s office. I
began talking with people of the community, hearing their concerns
and ideas, so I felt like I would give a good race. Well, I then took every
precinct in the county. The people wanted a change, and I promised
just that. I hope I have lived up to that promise.”
Talton was actually sworn into office before January 1, 1973. While
he can’t recall the exact date, he remembered that it was at midnight,
and by his side was his father along with about five deputies that would
start with him as the sheriff. One of those five people was Chief Deputy
Billy Rape. Rape, back then, was in the criminal investigations division
and became the chief deputy following Willie Talton, in the late 1990s.
Rape says as long as Talton is in office, he’s not going anywhere.
“One thing that has always stayed with me in my mind and heart is
the advice Sheriff Talton gave us on that night we were sworn in,”
Rape said. “And that was the determination on how long we stayed
in depended on how we treated people when doing our jobs. That
has always stayed with me, and really, it’s the mantra of the Houston
County Sheriff’s Office. It may be ‘corny’ to others, but it has worked
for me - it has worked for this whole office because we try to instill that
into our deputies when they are first hired on. Even though we have to
make arrests sometimes, we always have to think about how it’s going
to impact someone’s life. We try to do it with as much compassion
and make it as easy as possible. But he is my true friend. I, along with

9
the whole office, are so grateful for him, and we are proud to serve
alongside him.”
Another long time friend and colleague of Talton is Houston County
Board of Commissioners’ Chairman Tommy Stalnaker. Talton
said other sheriffs from around the state tell him all the time that
they can’t believe how good of a relationship he has with the board
of commissioners. Stalnaker said it’s easy to have a good working
relationship when both in office have the same mind frame in that it’s
all about the people of the county.
“He’s an outstanding individual, first of all, and that’s what, in my
opinion, makes him such a great sheriff,” Stalnaker said. “He cares for
people and he tries to help people and he serves the people that he works
for, which are all the citizens and taxpayers in this county. Assembling
the department that he has and managing the department that he has,
he’s well respected; not only in this county, but throughout the state.
All those that are in politics, as well as people that are not in politics,
have a great deal of respect for him. He has been a lifelong friend of our
family, and I am grateful to call him a friend as well as serve with him.”
When it comes to Talton’s secret for his key to his success, it’s really no
secret, and he never credits himself.
“I would not be where I am today without all the great employees of the
Houston County Sheriff’s Office,” Talton said. “I can’t do it without
them. I have some of the best employees in the state. My first year, we
had 28 deputies, and today, we have about 325. I watched this county
grow a lot, and I like to see progress. But again, none of it would have
been possible without my staff. I am not a micro-manager, I let each
department head run it, and they all do a great job. I just truly enjoy my
job, my staff and the people of Houston County.”

Bluebird
No. 1 Plaque
On October 1, 2020 the Perry Area Historical Society installed a
bronze plaque on the building at 1032 Ball Street marking the site
where Bluebird Bus No. 1 was built in 1927. After serving in WWI,
Albert L. Luce opened a Ford dealership on this site known as
Houston Valley Motor Company. As a visionary, Mr. Luce saw a
coming need for school buses and investigated ways to build them
strong enough to withstand the unimproved Georgia roads. With
several local mechanics and body men working on the project, the
bus was designed and mounted on a 1927 Ford Model T chassis. It
was built without proper window sashes and only a thin roll-up
canvas curtain shielding its occupants during inclement weather.
One of those men designing this project was Cecil Moody who later
purchased the Houston Valley Motor Company and named it Moody
Motor Company. His business operated for many years on this corner.
Today the fully restored Bluebird No. 1 is on display at the Henry Ford
Museum in Dearborn, Michigan.

Aluminum Recycling of Warner Robins
Celebrates its 41st Anniversary Serving the
Warner Robins and Middle GA Communities
In 1979 our family ventured into the business of buying
aluminum beverage cans from the public, hence the name
Aluminum Recycling of Warner Robins. We started out in a
small storefront in North Commercial Circle but quickly realized
we needed more space and built a 4000 square foot warehouse,
allowing us to accept other non-ferrous metals including copper,
brass, lead, stainless steel, insulated wire, radiators, and much
more.
If you have metals left over from remodeling projects, or just
cleaning up around the house or business, rather than throwing
them away, recycle instead! Not only will you be helping the
environment, you will be earning cash too. If you are fundraising
for your favorite church, school, scout troop or charity, let us
know. We give special prices to non-profits in our community. In
addition, we welcome school groups or scout troops to schedule a
guided tour of our facilities to learn about the recycling process.
We attribute our success to our friendly, customer-oriented
atmosphere and our commitment to serving our community with
honesty and integrity. We use only NTEP certified scales, and
scale weight readouts are clearly visible to our customers. Our
employees are certified in forklift operations, trained hands-on for
material identification, and receive annual EPA training in water
pollution prevention.

Middle Georgia Geochaching:
A treasure hunt across Houston County
Joshua Miller
Sports Editor
Geocaching originated the day after President Bill Clinton changed
the access requirements for GPS coordinates in May of 2000. GPS
coordinates became available to the public and not exclusively for
the military. Somebody in Oregon stashed a container, posted the
coordinates online to see if people could find it, and when they did,
geocaching was born. The first ever geocache is still available to find
to this day, and Tami Davis, head of the Middle Georgia Geocaching
Group, discovered it along with hundreds more.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of geocaching. It’s an ongoing
treasure hunt in which anyone can participate. It’s simple. First, register
for free on geochaching.com, then review the information and start
hunting with your smartphone or GPS device. You can also hide your
own container and post the coordinates for other cachers to locate.
Some containers are easy to find; others may require clever ways of
discovery. Inside the containers are little log sheets geocachers sign to
show they’ve been at the location, and then return it to the hiding spot.
Next, go to the website, record your visit and share your experience
finding the cache.
There are levels to geocaching. The more challenging caches make
you solve puzzles to get the coordinates; some take you to various
locations before ending up at the final location with the container. It’s
a worldwide activity that can require diving, climbing with a harness
or horseback riding. There are even unique locations around Houston
Visitors Guide 2020-2021

31
County. Davis mentioned one geocache in a fallen tree over a swamp
in Perry.
“Some containers are really teeny-tiny,” said Davis about the various
geocaches. “There are containers as small as your thumbnail and inside
is the tiniest strip of paper. You just put your initials on it and tuck it
right back in. Some of them are gigantic, some as big as a bread box,
some as big as a car. We have one here in Warner Robins, officially
in Bonaire; it’s probably five-foot tall, six-foot wide. It’s a big crate
that’s been built. You open the lid up, and all the geocaching supplies
are inside.”
Some geocache containers are big enough to hold “trade items,” like
small toys or other signature items. When you come across trade items,
you can take something and trade it for an item you’d like to put in
the container. Davis estimates there are about 150 geochaches around
Houston County, but it’s not all just a big treasure hunt.
For some around Houston County, it’s a social activity and
community service group. Davis started up the Middle Georgia
Geocaching Facebook group in 2014 where geocachers around the
area get together for events, host geocaching games, travel and much
more. While exploring the area, the group also plays a part in helping
the environment.
Middle Georgia Geocaching group holds an event called Cache In
Trash Out (CITO). As they geocache, the group members’ goal is to
leave the area in a better condition than they found it.
“We try to work really hard on doing cleanups,” said Davis. “We had a
big get-together at one of the parks in the city of Perry. We’ve worked
(frequently) with the rec department and public works department
down there. We’ve also done it many times with Keep Warner Robins
Beautiful. I couldn’t even count how many things we’ve done with
them... But it’s just a way to get together and meet other geocachers.
Our Facebook group is really active and friendly.”
If you’re interested in joining the Middle Georgia Geocaching group
and learning even more about caching, find Davis’ group on Facebook
and visit geocaching.com.

Warner Robins
Keeping Its
Roots Alive
By KRISTIN MORIARTY
HHJ Managing Editor
Located at 99 N Armed Forces Blvd in Warner Robins is a National
Historic Site of the E.L. Greenway Welcome Center Train Depot as
well as the old Elberta Train Depot.
Warner Robins Convention and Visitor’s Bureau Director, Marsha
Buzzell, shared that construction of the railroad through Houston
County began in 1881. The Elberta Depot was built in 1918 at its
original location three miles north of the E.L. Greenway Welcome
Center Train Depot at the corner of Elberta Road and GA Highway
247, and served as a whistle stop for many years for transporting
produce and mail.
Buzzell said when the train did not stop anymore, the depot was walledin
as a warehouse and rediscovered in 1983 by a local salvage company.
The depot was then moved to the Houston County Fairgrounds on
Dunbar Road and moved again in 2003 to its current location for
historic preservation and as exhibit space to depict the city’s heritage,
Robins Air Force Base and the connection to surface transportation.
“Warner Robins actually began its existence as York then later became
Wellston, located 18 miles south of Macon and 17 miles northeast of
Perry,” Buzzell said. “At that time, little Wellston had a population of
52 residents and was surrounded by peanut patches and cornfields. The
impact of World War II had a direct effect on Wellston because it was
selected as the site for an Army Air Corps Depot. The depot was named
in honor of Brigadier General Augustine Warner Robins in 1940. And
so with the E.L. Greenway Welcome Center Train Depot it was mainly
used for the military, but did allow civilians to travel.”

In 1943, by an act of the Georgia Assembly, the new community of
Warner Robins was officially chartered and incorporated. Following
World War II, Army Air Corps Depot then later became Robins
Air Force Base, where today it employs over 24,000 where majority
are civilians.
“There was only one other city that can say that World War II helped
build and that is Oakridge, TN, which is the home of the atomic
bomb,” Buzzell said. “Truthfully after World War II when the city
was renamed Warner Robins, the community didn’t really anticipate
it remaining a military community or a rural farming community. But
then the Korean War came along and it solidified Warner Robins.”
“You know history is so important,” Buzzell said. “It helps us grow and
appreciate of where we came from. About two and a half years ago, I
had a true red-letter moment, when an older gentleman came in and
said his mother came to him in a dream and told him to come to the
depot. So when we began talking he shared that his grandfather was the
depot master where the welcome center is. Prior to that we learned that
Houston County Commissioner Tom McMichael’s wife’s uncle was
the train master, so in turn that means they were cousins. I contacted
Dianne and connected her to this man. The man said the only thing he
remembered about his grandfather’s funeral was it was at a church on
a big hill, which was Pleasant Hill here in Warner Robins. Well long
story short, Dianne took him to his grandfathers, her uncle’s grave. It
was so wonderful to have experienced that.”
Buzzell said both depots have been located at 99 N Armed Forces
Blvd now for 17 years. Both have been remodeled to an extent within
keeping the guidelines of the National Historic Register. The flooring
however in the Elberta Depot is original. Both are open to the public as
well to tour, and Buzzell said they also host some events there.
“We are currently making some more updates inside the Elberta Depot,
by adding more artifacts and making a little theater area to show our
oral history project, we won an award for that a couple years ago,”
Buzzell said. “We also now have a train model display of what we think
our city looked like back then in the early 1900s. We invited all to come
down and see the beauty of our history, again it’s important to keep
it alive.”

Centerville:
Then and Now
By KENDRA NORMAN HOLMES
HHJ Staff Writer
Centerville, Georgia has come a long way over the years. The earliest
Houston County maps, dating back to 1847, show a settlement called
Busby in the place where Centerville now stands.
According to current Centerville Mayor John Harley, “The city came
into existence in 1958, but it shows up on an 1847 map for the state of
Georgia. During that time period, between [1847] and 1958, it had a
number of different names.”
Those names—based on a timeline showcasing the legend of
Centerville that can be viewed on the city’s official website—included
LaVilla, Gunn, Dunbar and Toy. In the year 1882, a land map cited the
town as Busbayville. It was not until 1888 that the area map showed
the community as its current name of Centerville.
Centerville’s Director of Economics Development Kate Hogan
shared that there was once a time when, even after getting its name,
Centerville lost it. “Gwinnett County, located just northeast of
Atlanta, had a Centerville, Georgia, so the post office moved up
there,” she explained. “And then the post office moved back, and we
reclaimed the name because the Centerville in Gwinnett County
is now just a Census designated place instead of an incorporated
city. So in 1958, when we incorporated, we reclaimed the
name Centerville.”
Upon becoming incorporated, Centerville also got its first elected
head of city that year when Superior Court Judge A.M. Anderson
swore in Mr. Sherrill Stafford, who served as mayor for 16 years. Also
in 1958, the first city councilmen were sworn in; one of which was Paul
Stalnaker, uncle of Tommy Stalnaker, who is the current chairman of
the Houston County Board of Commissioners.
Centerville’s first census took place in 1960, at which time the official
population count was a meager 290. From then until now, that number
has drastically changed, with much of the growth happening in the last
couple of decades.
“Centerville has been growing significantly as far as our residential
building permits,” shared Hogan. “The Eagle Springs neighborhood
was fully developed in the late 1990s and early 2000s. We’ve got other
neighborhoods, like Old Stone Crossing, that have just been growing
dramatically. We’re excited to see new residents and visitors joining us.”
She went on to say, “In the year 2000, we had a population of 4,000. In
2010 our census counted Centerville’s population at 7,148. After this
year’s census, we’re hoping to be above 10,000. It would be really great
to have doubled our population in 20 years.”
Before becoming the ninth mayor of Centerville, Harley not only
served 34 years in the United States Air Force, but he also served for
several years as Centerville City Administrator. He was working in that
capacity when the police, fire, and water departments all functioned
out of the same small building—a building that, at that time, was
known as Centerville City Hall.
“When I came in as the city administrator many years ago, it was really
a dangerous place to work. Everything was inside city hall,” Harley
recalled. “I remember when they had a growth spurt,” he added. “They
went to the court, and the judge sentenced a bunch of people to add a
section on the building. Then a few years after that, they decided to add
more space, but that was done by volunteers.”
Explaining further, Harley said, “Basically, it was three buildings all
in one—all tied together. Each one had its own electrical source, so it
was three panel boxes in there, one for each building. We were really
tight in there; everybody was sitting on top of each other. They actually
had electrical cords running throughout the building bringing power
52 At Home in Houston County www.hhjonline.com
to different places. You’d see yellow and orange cords running through
there; so like I said, it was not a great situation.”
Much needed help finally came in the form of SPLOST (special
purpose local option sales tax) dollars, but according to Mayor Harley,
with the 2006 SPLOST, Centerville didn’t get enough money to pay
for a new city hall.
“It was really thanks to the rest of Houston County that the city
was able to get some funds. We didn’t get enough money to pay for
a new city hall, so the other entities actually gave up some money to
Centerville so we’d have enough money to build our city hall. And
that’s how that took place,” Harley shared.
As the city’s administrator, Harley said he remembered pointing out
to the council that Centerville had a lot of isles within the city. And
for most of the isles, the city was providing water and sewer. The city
decided to annex all those in, and in doing so; it basically increased the
size of the city by over a third within about a six-month time period.
And because SPLOST proceeds are based on population, SPLOST
dollars increased for Centerville, which provided the resources needed
to start doing other things.
“Our mission, once we got it together, was to put a new police
department in,” Harley said. “We had a library in the city, but the
Houston County Library System built that big one over on Gunn
Road. When they did, that other building became ours. So at the time
we built the police station, we ended up taking that old library building
and making a courthouse out of it. That was done with SPLOST
proceeds,” the mayor informed. “As we continued on, we wanted to get
enough money for a fire station. During that time period, we built the
water department on Elberta Road. That money wasn’t SPLOST,” he
clarified; “that came from the water and sewer accounts. We had to
build one, because prior to that, all the workforce then was working
out of areas around our water towers, which created problems because
of the possibility of contamination of the water underneath there.
After that, we started looking at SPLOST again and started gathering
money up to get enough to build a new fire station. That’s where the fire
station came in.”
life side.” She paused and added with a laugh, “I can talk ages about
Center Park!”
Citizens in and around Centerville share the economics developer’s
excitement about Center Park. Great headway is being made on the
constructing and grand opening plans are slated for late 2020, if
weather and health/safety conditions permit. As for the new stateof-the-art
Centerville Fire Station, the grounds were officially broken
this summer, and if all goes according to plans, the structure will be
complete before the end of 2021. Ironically, the new fire station is being
erected on the same lot where the old city hall (that once housed the
fire, police and water departments) once stood.
“We started as one big happy family in one single building, and now
we’ve got some really good facilities throughout the community
to make sure we’re providing the best services and resources for our
residents and visitors,” Hogan said.
Beginning in 2017, large celebrations began taking place in Centerville,
including a fall festival, a Christmas parade and an Independence Day
celebration. COVID-19 placed all of those things on pause, but as
soon as conditions are deemed safe enough, Centerville looks forward
to resuming.
As much as the city has progressed over the years, its mayor
has a vision for even greater. “We definitely have to get the
fire station paid for before we do anything else big,” he said, “but a
senior citizens center—a full self-contained community center—in
Centerville would be nice. That’ll be at least five years down the road,”
he added. “But I’d love to see that here for our aging citizens.”
It’s been quite a journey for the city of Centerville, but taking one step
at a time, it has evolved into a very progressive area of middle Georgia.
No more are any of its departments sharing the same small building. As
the city progressed, each got its own.
“Mayor and council built the new Centerville City Hall around 2008,
and it’s a beautiful building,” Hogan raved. “Then they built the
new law enforcement center and renovated the old Houston County
Library, which is now our Municipal Court. Then in 2017, they
opened up the Centerville Utilities Building, and that is a much, much
better facility than the public works department ever had. Now,”
she added, “we’re looking forward to opening up our last couple
of buildings with the new fire station—the last department to get
a new building—and then, Center Park at Centerville, which is
kind of the recreational end to help bring in that quality of

Houston Home Journal
turns 150
By KRISTIN MORIARTY
HHJ Managing Editor
The Houston Home Journal is now 150 years old.
John T. Waterman founded the Houston Home Journal in Perry
in December 1870. The first issue was published Dec. 17, 1870.
Beginning in 1877, the publication’s title often shifted between
Houston Home Journal and Home Journal, before finally settling on
the former in 1924.
Perry native, John H. Hodges, purchased the paper in 1880. The
Hodges family maintained ownership of the publication for over 60
years, before selling it in 1946. Since 1946, the paper has been owned
and operated by several people including, but not all listed: Charles
Cooper Etheridge, Bobby Branch, Lewis Meeks, Ogden Persons III,
Millard B. Grimes, Danny Evans and current owners, Bob and Mitch
Tribble, of Trib Publications.
The Houston Home Journal remains the legal organ for Houston
County and continues semiweekly publication as the county’s oldest
continually operated business. Larry Walker, Perry native, lawyer and
business owner, former State Representative and House Majority Floor
Leader, congratulated the paper on its 150th anniversary. Walker
wrote for the Houston Home Journal as an opinion writer for more
than 13 years.
“Congratulations to the Houston Home Journal, the keeper of the
history in Perry for 150 years,” Walker said. “I’m extremely proud of
them. I believe they’re the oldest business in continuous operation in
Perry and have done a fine job. The past is outstanding and the future is
destined to be even better.”
Evans, who owned the paper in early 1990s and later from 2000 to
2014, said he enjoyed serving the public of Houston County as the
legal organ and news source.
“The Houston Home Journal is not just a business; it’s an institution.
When it started in 1870, it served the citizens a long time as the
community’s only news source. There was no TV, no radio or Internet.
I always had great staff and truly enjoyed working with the citizens
of Houston County. There are so many good memories. I wish them
continued success and hope it continues for another 150 years.”
Current general manager/publisher Cheri Adams said she is excited to
celebrate the momentous 150th anniversary.

“It’s been an honor to be the publisher for the last five years here at the
Houston Home Journal,” Adams said.
Adams was first hired on to the Houston Home Journal in 2001
working her way from advertisement sales, to advertising manager and
in 2014, became the general manager/publisher.
“I have watched a lot of changes within the county, but I have truly
enjoyed watching it grow,” she said. “One of my most favorite
things in this business is meeting all of the people in the community
and celebrating their accomplishments. To turn 150 and be a part of
this milestone is extremely exciting. There has been great leadership
over the years, and they have always done their best to bring fair
and accurate local news. And that is what we continue to strive
for today.”
Adams also shared that all of the paper’s archives from 1870 to 1993
are now available online through the Georgia Historic Newspapers at
https://gahistoricnewspapers.galileo.usg.edu/.
“It’s amazing to see how far we have come,” Adams said.

Heart of Georgia Hospice:
Securing Inpatient Hospice for Future Generations
I am thankful to have the privilege
of speaking to you about the long
withstanding vision of Heart of Georgia
Hospice to build an inpatient hospice
facility here in Warner Robins. Our
community requires this and deserves
this. For those of you who are not
aware, inpatient hospice services support
those individuals with more intensive
medical needs associated with their
terminal illness. This includes symptom
management for severe pain that cannot
be managed in the home setting with
the goal to return the patient home
once those symptoms are manageable.
Inpatient hospice also provides respite
care for families in need of a ‘timeout’
when care of a loved one receiving
hospice services becomes overwhelming
and the caregiver needs to rest.
Providing these and other services
to our community comes at
a cost. We cannot operate a
non-profit hospice without
philanthropy. We are
indescribably thankful
for the donations and
support we receive as
well as items donated
to our two thrift store
locations, both in
Warner Robins and
Byron. Those dollars
go far in supporting
our mission to serve.
36 years ago, when our
organization brought hospice to Houston
and surrounding counties, it was done
because a small group of ladies saw a need.
The hospice needs of our community
have not changed or dwindled over time.
In fact, there are more of us now than
ever before which greatly perpetuates
the necessity of our services to the
community at large.
This capital campaign requires urgent
and major gifting towards building a
free-standing General Inpatient Unit
here in Warner Robins at our home
office location, 103 Westridge Drive.
The cost of construction is nearly 3 and
a half million dollars. We are excited to
be a part of creating infrastructure in
this community as we have all noticed
strong new builds happening around us.
So, how can you help? We need you, our
community, to partner with us in support
of this new construction. Your support
will have an enormous and lasting
physical, emotional, and economic
impact within this organization spilling
out into our community.
The Hazel Colson Hospice House will
represent a new beginning in our mission
72 At Home in Houston County www.hhjonline.com
and ministry to preserve hospice care to
our future generations so that no one has
to suffer at their journey’s end. This is our
promise, our dedication, our mission.
Deuteronomy 15:10-11 says, You shall
give to him freely, and your heart shall
not be grudging when you give to him,
because for this the LORD your God
will bless you in all your work and in all
that you undertake. For there will never
cease to be poor in the land. Therefore,
I command you, ‘You shall open wide
your hand to your brother, to the needy
and to the poor, in your land.’
We are so humbled and thankful to you
for your compassion and support of this
mission.

Historic whispers of Perry
By LAUREN HARRIS
HHJ Staff Writer
Around 30 miles south of Macon, sits the town of Perry, with
its origins dating back to the 1820s. Like any city with an age
of almost 200 years, secrets of the past are around every corner.
There are two tours that can be taken: a walking tour of Carroll
Street and a driving tour of other historic sites throughout the
city. Information compiled by Ellie Loudermilk of the Perry
Area Historical Society, The Perry Area CVB and the City of
Perry, shows that there are 76 pinpoints that can open a door to
this community’s past.

Along these tours, one may discover the former Sinclair Service
Station on Carroll Street, built during the Great Depression in
1931, which boast a second story apartment above the business
portion. Also on a journey down Carroll, can be found the
Toomer Building, made of pressed metal and constructed in 1906
by Amanda Toomer as a retail store. In 1915, it was converted to a
funeral parlor where the deceased could be seen displayed in the
windows. The origins of the Houston Home Journal, Houston
County’s legal organ, established in 1870, reside at 936 Carroll
Street. The current building was built in 1939, to replace the
previous one, and housed the paper until 1974.
It may be hard to miss the tall steeple of the white painted Perry
United Methodist Church. Organized in 1826, the current

building was completed in 1861 at 1001 Carroll Street, after
two other buildings housed the congregation. Near the church,
standing on the site of the city’s very first water tower, stands a
wrought iron water fountain.
Venturing from Carroll Street, and a small car ride away, stands
the Springhill School, built as a one-room schoolhouse in 1905.
Its original location was on Highway 41, three miles to the north
of Perry. The Perry Area Historical Society acquired the property
in 2009 and has since preserved the building. Also moved from
its original location, Clinchfield Chapel can be found at 1251
Forest Hill Drive at Forest Hill Park. Other landmarks that
can be found here are the circa 1878 steeple of the Perry Baptist
Church, the covered Brian Bowen Bridge and the relocated “Red
Caboose,” which was relocated from beside the Whistle Stop
Café in Juliette, Ga. The park is now used as an event venue.
Perry is no stranger to homes of historic significance. The
historic dwelling named Palace Beautiful, which reigns over
Perry from her perch at 1208 Main Street, was erected in 1852
with a Georgian design. In 1926, it became the clubhouse for
the Clinchfield Portland Cement Company, and then changed
hands again in 1955, becoming a funeral parlor, now called
Watson Hunt Funeral Home. There are also war stories to be
found on Main Street, such as with the Former Holtzclaw Home
at number 1117. The house, built in 1855, boasts the evidence of
a hole in the ceiling, where, amid rumors that the Yankee Army
was coming to Perry around the close of the war between the
states, Judge Holtzclaw, owner of the home, had his brother-inlaw
cut a hole in the ceiling of one of the home’s closets. The “solid
silver coin communion service” of the Perry Baptist Church was
hidden there.
The homes of notable Perry natives can be found along the tour
route, such as the childhood home of Senator Sam Nunn, as well
as the growing place of another well-known Georgian, General
Courtney Hodges. Commander of the First Army during the
Second World War, and the first soldier in U.S. History to
become a four-star General (rising up from a private) Hodges
spent his childhood at 903 Evergreen Street, a home built
in 1893.
Down on Sunshine Avenue, marks the site of Houston County
Training School, later known as Houston High School. The
school was built in 1957, and until 1970, it was a school for
African American students. The school’s football field was
located at 1534 James St., and the Houston High Indians won
the state football championship there in 1960.

Housed in a residence constructed in 1927, the Perry Area Historical
Museum emerged here in 2010, showcasing its own secrets such as
genealogical data and memorabilia, as well as archives and records.
There are numerous other locations in Perry that hold the past and are
ready to share it. The only way to hear the secrets of this place where
“Georgia comes together,” may be to find them in person.

Popular
walking trails
in Houston
County
Joshua Miller
Sports Editor
Throughout the ever-growing industrious city of Warner Robins,
there are still subtle getaways to enjoy nature that you might not know
about. Right around the corner from the buzzing traffic, the city offers
walking trails to enjoy with friends, family, or by yourself. Just minutes
away from the heart of the city lie popular walking trails, each with
its own unique allure to give locals and visitors a variety of options to
choose from. Wellston Trail at Fountain Park, The Walk at Sandy Run
and Walker’s Pond Trail are three trails highlighted in this edition of
At Home in Houston County.
The Walk at Sandy Run is one of the latest parks and walking trails
in Warner Robins. It opened in August of 2019 and features a 22-
acre landscape. The park gives access to a vast grass field with enough
open space to play seven-on-seven football. Around the grass area, is a
pavilion and adjacent from it, are two big slides on an island-like hill
for kids to play on. The walking trail is mostly an elevated and wooden
path that takes you on a tour through a forest area that surrounds
you. The beginning of the trail features a large pergola that overlooks
a lake on the west end of Sandy Run Creek. As you continue past the
large green space and slides, you’ll come up on the continuation of
the wooden trail. That portion is called Parker’s Trail, dedicated to
Parker Killian Moore, who passed away at 23 years old. Parker’s Trail
continues through a peaceful forest area on a smooth platform down
to a dead end. The Walk at Sandy Run is an overall easy trail that’s just
short of a mile long out and back. If you’d like to check it out, The Walk
at Sandy Run is located on 1119 S. Houston Lake Road.
Visitors Guide 2020-2021
At Home in Houston County
103
Walker’s Pond Trail is a more simplistic path compared to The Walk
at Sandy Run, but provides its own special atmosphere being that it’s
located right on Walker’s Pond. The park and trail, which opened in
March of 2017, has a paved walking path just over a half of a mile long
circling the entire pond. The view at Walker’s Pond provides all you’d
need to enjoy on a nature walk, and the area is filled with all sorts of
wildlife. The trees and rounded path provide plenty of shade for the
sunny days and the scenery almost makes you forget it’s located right
off of GA Highway 247, and a busy side of town. Surrounding the
pond are perfect areas for picnics and fishing, there are also benches
around the path so you can sit back and take it all in. Walker’s Pond is
located on Woodlawn Avenue.
Wellston Trail is a park frequented by locals in Warner Robins mainly
because of the easygoing mile long (two miles roundtrip) paved
pathway. The majority of the trail is through the shaded woods, keeping
you cool and out of the sun. There are two entrances to Wellston Trail,
one on Corder Road and the other at Fountain Park, off of Kimberly
Road. The entrance off Corder Road has a parking lot and playground
for children right before the trail begins. It leads you to the Fountain
Park entrance, which has more amenities to offer for activities before or
after hitting the trail. Fountain Park features another playground for
kids, a pavilion with picnic tables, basketball court and small baseball
field. Right next door, over a miniature bridge, is also the Fountain
Park public pool. The trail entrances are located at 309 Corder Road
and 614 Kimberly Road.

The Museum has a large collection
of approximately 85 historic U.S.
Air Force aircraft, missiles and
cockpits dating from a replica
of a 1986 glider to modern
aircraft in today’s U.S. Air
Force inventory. Just a few
notable aircraft include
the actual SR-71 that set
the World Absolute Speed
Record of 2,193 mph,
B-25, B-29, B-52 and B-1B
bombers as well as an UH-
1F “Huey” climb in. In 2013,

The Museum Foundation operates
interactive world-class education programs
through its National STEM Academy

106 At Home in Houston County www.hhjonline.com
Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) and
History. Opportunities for learners
ages 4 through adult are conducted
both on school sites and at the
Museum of Aviation. An average of
52,000 students and teachers take part
in the museum’s education programs
each year. The Museum is also the
only NASA Educator Resource
Center in the state of Georgia,
educating teachers on NASA’s

STEM Academy offers many
virtual programs as well
including virtual field trips
and virtual teacher training
workshops.
On an average year, the
Museum of Aviation typically
sees more than 600,000
visitors. The Museum has
six event spaces for rental for
groups from 20 to 1,000 where
it hosts events from birthday
celebrations and retirements to
reunions and receptions. In January,
the Museum will again partner with the
Paralyzed Veterans of America to host
its fourth hand-cycle race as part of the
25th Annual Marathon/Half-Marathon
and 5K race. On February 6, 2021, the
Museum of Aviation Foundation will
host “The Return – A Beatles Tribute
Band and Dinner Show”, where guests
will get to experience a world-famous
Beatles tribute band. The National
STEM Academy will host Super
Saturday STEM labs one Saturday each
month, which provide students the
opportunity to develop their interest in
science, technology, engineering and
math, using fun hands on activities.
The Museum of Aviation is home to
a Virtual Reality Simulator, which is
located in the main Rotunda at the
Museum. Riders have the option to
choose from a visit to the International
Space Station, an underwater adventure,
a ride on the wings of a bi-plane,
a visit with great-white sharks or a
roller coaster through outer space. The
simulator is open to the public during
all operating hours of the Museum.
In October of 2019, the Museum
became the home to a statue of Eugene
Bullard, the first African American
fighter pilot. This beautiful statue is on
display outside of the amphitheater at
the Museum, directly behind the main
Eagle building.

“Beneath the oak’s
refreshing shade”
Evergreen Cemetery stands time’s test
By Lauren Harris
HHJ Staff Writer
Nestled in the heart of Perry, there is a stone archway standing silently along Main Street just
before the intersection of Courtney Hodges Boulevard. The arch, standing tall and elevated
above the road, enters into Perry’s oldest cemetery, but above all else, it serves as a gateway into
the city’s past. Journeying up the drive of Evergreen Cemetery and into the gates may seem like
another world, with the breeze wafting against the moss hanging lazily from the branches of
the trees, and the stone memorials from a different time and world standing proud, as a city of
their own.
On the backside, immediately after entering the archway, is a poem with a date published in the
Houston Home Journal on August 5, 1886. The piece was written by then publisher, Edwin
Martin, and is descriptive of the resting place. A line from the composition reads, “Here rest
dear friends of life’s green prime, and early manhood’s ardent years. They’ve left behind the
cares of time, its hopes and sorrows, smiles and fears.” According to Ellie Loudermilk, President
of the Perry Area Historical Society, there are over 2,828 identified “dear friends” resting in
the 12.3-acre plot of land, including veterans of every war since the Spanish American War.
The stone markers of Evergreen reside beside the “Ocklawhatchie,” or what that August 1886
issue of the Journal clarifies is Big Indian Creek. The site even carries a sign, asking visitors to
be aware of alligators.
According to the Perry Area Historical Society, the cemetery found its beginnings in 1827 on
the grounds outside of a Methodist church built on the property. The foundation can still be
picked out there today. Twenty years later, the church relocated to a new property close by. The
archway was erected in 1928 as a gift from Dr. Charles R. Mann, who had requested that a
portion of his estate be donated to the city of Perry. Those that were left behind by Mann, felt
that the donation of the archway was a way to both execute this request, as well as remember
Mann as a citizen who loved the area in which he lived, which is documented on the arch itself.

It is also documented that there are numerous art adorned stone
monuments in Evergreen, many of which came from Macon, Ga., about
30 miles north of Perry, and others hailing from Americus, around 45
miles to the south.
There are many stories documented in the archives of the Houston
Home Journal (established in 1870), and other sources, of those laid
to rest in this historic place, as well as stories for the property itself.
One such story, according to documents from Perry Area Historical
Society, tells of the naming of the cemetery in 1879, stating that, “The
name of Evergreen has been chosen, and it is a good one.” The name
was chosen under then Mayor G.W. Killen.
Another story shared in these documents tells of mischievous
hogs that had been driven out of the cemetery in 1882, and it was
noticed that they were frequent visitors. The piece called for steps to
be taken to prevent this type of disturbance out of concern for the
unprotected graves.
Resting in the cemetery, one may find notable names such as
Congressman Dudley Hughes, known as the father of vocational
education, or James M. Kelly, the first reporter for the Georgia Supreme
Court. Among military veterans buried on the grounds is Sgt. Clinton
C. Duncan, who was appointed by President Grover Cleveland as the
Commissioner of Indian Affairs. The commanding officer of the Fifth
Cavalry Regiment of WWII also rests here. He lived to tell the tale of
the Bataan Death March after serving as a prisoner of war. Evergreen
also hosts many immigrants to the country hailing from places such
as Switzerland, Germany, Sweden and Ireland among others. The
Houston Home Journal reported in 1901, that an unknown resident
of Evergreen was found while digging a “new” grave, uncovering a
metal casket.
“Of course, the excavation was covered up, and the new grave was dug
in another place,” the article explained, stating also that it is unknown
who was buried in the casket.
A curious aspect of Evergreen Cemetery, is the aspect of its “Angel
Land,” which Maxine Thompson regaled the history of for the readers
of the Houston Home Journal in 1972. Thompson noted that a 20- by
40-foot section of the property was the final resting place of babies.

Thompson wrote that during World War II, Robins Field, which was
the Warner Robins Air Technical Service Command before becoming
Robins Air Force Base, partnered with Watson and Whipple Funeral
Home to “handle the arrangements for all military deaths, whether
the deceased were buried here or shipped back home.” In doing so, the
funeral home bought the plot, and when the tragedy of a stillbirth or
the death of an infant of servicemen occurred, they had the option to
bury the newborn there free of charge.
While Thompson reported that there wasn’t certainty as to how the
area became known as “Angel Land,” she noted that children seemed to
be attracted to it. Thompson mentioned the story of one mother who
shared that while visiting the graves of her own relatives; her son would
never leave Evergreen without visiting “Angel Land.”
Though at the current time, all public tours of Evergreen Cemetery
have been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, private tours can
still be scheduled through the Perry Area Historical Museum, at 901
Northside Drive in Perry. The museum can also be reached at 478-
224-4442. According to the museum, the scheduling of public tours
will resume in the near future, with plans in the making for candlelight
tours and a new tour boasting, “The Stories of Evergreen.”

William “W.T.” Jones and Thelma Jones
have been married 71 years. They met
in Florida when Thelma was just 16. It
was April 1949 and 22-year-old W.T. had
completed four years in the Marine Corps,
serving during World War II. Back home in
Sydney, Florida, some cousins introduced
the two. W.T. said it was love at first sight;
they were married by November.
After their marriage, Thelma finished school
while W.T. looked for work. He said it was
tough to find a job after the war. In search
of work, the couple moved to Dothan,
Alabama, before settling in Perry about the
time their first son was born.
In Perry, W.T. ran a service station, and
said everyone in town knew him as “Mr.
Volkswagen,” because that’s primarily what
he worked on. He had a little help from his
sons, Tommy and Ronnie, and the business
was called Jones and Sons Garage. Thelma
worked at Anchor Glass until 1991, where
she “picked the misfit bottles out of the
assembly line,” W.T. said.
In 2017, Thelma suffered a stroke that left

her completely paralyzed on her left side.
Unable to care for her, W.T. moved her into
Summerhill Senior Community , which he
chose because of its convenient location
to their home, as well as its outstanding
reputation for quality care.
W.T. unexpectedly broke his foot and chose
to receive inpatient therapy at Veranda Rehab
at Summerhill a few years back. While doing
his own therapy conveniently at Summerhill,
W.T.’s priority was visiting his wife everyday.
Now well into his 90’s, and no longer able to
care for himself at home, W.T. chose Summerhill
Senior Community as his home, to be with
his lovely bride of 71 years. They live happily
together once again while Summerhill Senior
Community provides the healthcare and
therapy needed for them both.
Admitting that Thelma is starting to suffer a
little dementia, W.T. says that doesn’t make a
difference in his love for her.
“We took each other for better or worse all
those years ago.” he said with a smile and a
laugh. “I got the better and she got the worse.”

operated group of eight automotive brands located at six convenient locations in Forsyth, Macon, Albany and Warner
Robins. We proudly employ over 180 middle Georgians and open our doors every day with the goal of making the car

Our Ownership Team
Brothers Forest and Michael Hutchinson founded Hutchinson Automotive Group in 2006 with their purchase of
Huckabee Cadillac, Buick, GMC, Pontiac and Saturn. Soon after this initial purchase, the Hutchinson’s seized the
opportunity to bring Kia to Macon in 2009. More recently, the Hutchinson’s further expanded the group with the 2018
addition of our cousin, John Joyner, and acquisition of Hutchinson Toyota and Kia of Albany, GA. Bryan Tiller joined
the group with the addition of Hutchinson Ford of Forsyth and Mitsubishi-Warner Robins in 2019. As one of middle
Georgia’s largest and fastest growing dealer groups we look forward to serving your automotive needs!
