OHS to

continue

hybrid plan

After many meetings and discussions,

OHS has decided to continue

with its hybrid plan into the second

semester.

Those students who choose inperson

schooling will attend OHS

two days a week and be remote the

other three days. The Purple group

will be the beginning of the alphabet

and the White group will be the end

of the alphabet. All students will use

remote learning on Wednesdays.

OHS will continue to use a 1:40

dismissal each day to allow the

teachers time to interact with the remote

learning students.

Parents should have already contacted

the school office about which

plan they want for their student but

if you have not, please do so ASAP.

The second semester Purple/

White schedule is attached to this

newsletter.

Semester exams will be

offered remotely

Counseling Corner

There will be some changes made

to semester exams this year due to

the COVID pandemic.

All students will be allowed to

take their exams remotely and do

NOT need to be physically in attendance

on either of the exam days.

However, students can choose to

come in to the school to take their

exams on either day, regardless

of whether they are in the Purple

Group or the White Group.

This will allow students with

poor internet reception or who need

a quieter work space to have access

to the classroom on that day.

OHS will still follow all IDPH

guidelines for mask wearing and

social distancing. To help prepare

for this, we ask that students inform

their teachers if they will be in-person

or remote during their exams.

Attendance on exam day, either

in-person or remotely, is required.

Exams will NOT be given early.

If a student will not be able to

take the test at the exam time, they

will need to arrange a time with the

teacher to take it later.

Teachers can require students

who are taking the test remotely to

leave their cameras on during the

test.

Here is the exam schedule that

will be used. Students should be ontime

for all exams.

Federal Student Aid) or signing the Non-Participation form is required

for graduation this year.

If you plan to continue your education after high school, the FAFSA

can help you qualify for grants, student/parent loans and sometimes

scholarships.

If you need help completing your FAFSA, or wish to sign the Non-

Participation form, please see Mrs. Lee.

Comet parents,

After numerous meetings and listening to stakeholders about what is best for our students and

community, OHS is announcing its plan for the second semester of the 2020-21 school year.

We have decided to continue with the hybrid plan that we used throughout the first semester. Students

will be divided into two groups and they will come two days a week. On the days that your student is not

in school they will learn remotely. All students will be remote learners on Wednesday. We will also

continue with 1:40 dismissals to allow teachers an opportunity to meet with students. Students who

choose to be remote learners will be expected to join each class virtually five days a week. We will also

continue with the health and safety measures which have worked to keep us in school without interruption

in the first semester -- wearing masks, continuing to keep people six foot apart as much as possible, and

continuing one-way traffic patterns in the hallways.

We understand that this system has its limitations, but we have determined that it works best for our

school. Over the semester the teachers and students have made adjustments and improvements as they

figured out what did and didn’t work about the new system. This has been difficult for all parties.

I still believe that in-person learning is the most effective way to educate our students and I would

encourage all parents to choose that option for the second semester. I believe that OHS has shown that

we are concerned about the health and safety of the students and staff and that we can conduct classes

in a way that is beneficial to all. I feel that the frequent face-to-face contact that in-person schooling

provides is important not only for its educational value, but also for social-emotional reasons.

However, I understand that many parents will choose to have their students be remote learners for the

semester. The OHS staff will attempt to provide the same quality of education to the remote learners as

we do for those in-person. We are constantly using new technology to improve our communication with

students, but there are challenges that are still difficult to overcome. It is important for remote-learning

students to understand that they bear a large part of the responsibility in staying in contact with their

teachers. It is also the expectation that all students participate daily in Google Meets.

Fill out the survey for EVERY student who will be attending OHS in the second semester. The survey is

simple. We are asking for four pieces of information -- the student’s name, grade, will they be in-person or

remote, and will they need bus transportation. We anticipate that the chosen method will be in place

for the entire second semester, but as outside forces change, we may adapt this plan. Any changes will

be addressed with the community before they are enacted.

The survey should have been completed by December 8 so that we can begin planning. We may

have to alter schedules to keep class sizes to a minimum depending on in-person numbers. The first day

of attendance for the second semester is January 6 (remotely for all students).

Finally, I want to thank the students and parents for making the first semester work as well as it did. There

were many challenges, but the attitudes and adaptability of all of those involved allowed us to get this far.

We hope the second semester will run smoothly as we educate students in the middle of a pandemic.

Thanks,

Tim Lee

Principal, Oakwood High School
