Underwater Heritage Group 2020 Kelly Tarlton
Recognition Award goes to Ewan Stevenson
The 2020 recipient of the Kelly
Tarlton Recognition Award for
2020 was presented at the AGM
of the New Zealand Underwater
Heritage Group (NZUHG)
on November 1st to Ewan
Stevenson.
Ewan is well known for his
incredible knowledge locating
and recording WWII ships and
planes in the Solomon Islands.
He was born in the Solomons
and spent many hours as a
child/teenager exploring the
vast debris field that remained
on land in Honiara. When his
father introduced him to diving
a whole new world to explore
and record opened up.
Organizations in the US that
endeavour to return Missing in
Action (MIAs) personnel home
have used Ewan on several
occasions to help locate downed
fighter planes.
Now living in New Zealand
Ewan’s enthusiasm for research
and planning expeditions to the
Solomons and here in New Zealand
has continued.
Along with other NZUHG members
he is trying to rediscover the third
NEW ZEALAND’S ONLY DIVE MAGAZINE
anchor lost in 1769 by French
Kelly’s wife Rosemary and daughter Fiona
congratulate Ewan Stevenson
explorer de Surville which was
located by the late Kelly Tarlton in
the 1970’s.
The first anchor recovered is
displayed in the entrance hall of
Te Papa museum, Wellington. The
second is in the Kaitaia Museum.
Ewan has also run several expeditions
to locate anchors lost by
another French explorer, Marion
Dufresne, who was here in 1772.
He is a partner in Sealark whose
goal is to locate WWII wrecks
(www.sealark.co.nz), and his own
man cave contains a vast wealth of
amazing research material.
Ewan is the fourth recipient of
this Award! Well deserved!

The Kelly Tarlton Recognition
Award for Services to Underwater
Heritage recognizes individuals
or groups who have made significant
and lasting contributions
through research, practice,
or advocacy to underwater
heritage, maritime archaeology,
or maritime history. The award
recognizes members of the
underwater heritage community
for long-term accomplishments
or those who have made a notable
impact through a significant innovation,
body of work or publication.
A candidate’s contributions can
include innovative ideas or maritime
conservation projects, including
services that have promoted underwater
heritage in New Zealand or
wider Pacific communities linked to
New Zealand. The award includes
a certificate of recognition, and an
invitation for the recipient to present
a keynote talk at the annual NZUHG
Conference.
