Birmingham is famous for car
manufacturing, wide range of canals
(boating), art industries in Digbeth, Cadbury
chocolate factory and legendary street food.
What are Birmingham’s waste products?
• Car manufacturing: metals, solvents, plastic,
glass, rubber.
• Boating: steel, rubber, timber, household
waste, organic waste.
• Art industries: timber, graphite, plastic,
aluminium (paintbrush, canvas, paper,
pencils, paint containers/tubs, pens)
• Chocolate industry: (emailed for further
information)
• Street food: plastic, paper, plastic (cutlery,
packaging)

After extensive research
Skatelite is an incredibly durable solid paper
composite material used as a riding surface for
extreme sports. Made by Richlite, who has been
manufacturing paper composite panels for more
than 70 years, Skatelite is the same material that has
been used by the aerospace, marine and A&D
industries.
Fast to ride on, grippy and super strong, Skatelite is used by park
managers, planners, builders and athletes alike for its smooth
riding surface, low maintenance, long life and comfortable
temperature. Made with paper that is either post consumer
waste recycled or sustainably harvested rapidly renewable
paper, Skatelite can be used raw or can be painted, custom
printed or customised with vinyl. It's also an excellent for making
Longboard decks.
All of the sheets can be drilled and fastened with exterior grade
screws on top of a substrate for vert ramps, mini ramps, grind rails
and other park features. Skatelite has a 5 year limited warranty.
Rubber is difficult to recycle. Unlike plastic,
rubber cannot be simply melted down and
re-used. /Enviro cycle/
In the image I visualised the rubber cut into
pieces so it could be joined with plastic to
make up a new material.

Hardwood timber Reclaimed pallet wood Rubber (used) Bioplastics (used)
• Low footprint
• Low energy
• Low cost
• Durable (but not always)
• Low maintenance
• Costs slightly more than
softwood (the harder
wood- the more
expensive)
• Good fire resistance
• Closed grain
• Low sap content
Reclaimed pallet wood is any wood that has
been salvaged and recycled.
Can be used as coffee tables, book shelves, shoe
organisers, wine bars, lighting, wall art, work
desktops, etc.
Closest source/local suppliers/producers –
supermarkets, barns, factories, construction
sites, dumpyards etc.

Automative vehicles, shoe soles,
boats, aircraft, toys, bottles,

Easy to get in automotive
manufacturing site or
dumpyards – tyres and shoes –
best source.

Beechwood (standard), painted (optional)
Finishes – oak, red oak, yellow pine, eucalyptus.
Large – 1200 x 1000 mm & euro pallet – 1200 x
800 mm

If treated – can be any colour
and shiny if preferred.
Some clear, some opaque (tends to
be off- white). Due to light scattering
can get amber tone.
Can be any colour required.
Shiny or matt finish is optional too.
Can have other materials mixed in.

Yes resource is renewable. Lifespan depends on
product usage.
The main chemical continents of rubber
are elastomers, or “elastic polymers,” large
chainlike molecules that can be stretched
to great lengths and yet recover their
original shape.
Yes resource is renewable. 10 years and
more.
typically organic polymers of high molecular mass
and often contain other substances. They are
usually synthetic, most commonly derived
from petrochemicals, however, an array of variants
are made from renewable materials such as
polylactic acid from corn or cellulosics from cotton
linters.
Yes, resource is renewable. From 50 to 500 years.

purchased, PalletOne earns FSC credits that can
be used to certify chips or pallets.

It is quite complex to deconstruct every single
part of a pallet. Easier to saw through it. More of a
factory work, rather than user labour.
