Devata<br />

Devata (adj.) ( -- ˚) having such & such a god as one's special divinity, worshipping, a worshipper of,<br />

devotee of Miln 234 (Brahma˚+Brahma (garuka). -- f. devat! in pati˚ "worshipping the husband," i. e. a<br />

devoted wife J iii.406; VvA 128.<br />

Devat!<br />

Devat! (f.) [deva+t!, qualitative -- abstr. suffix, like Lat. juventa, senecta, Goth. hauhipa, Ohg. fullida cp.<br />

Sk. p(r*at!, bandhut! etc.] "condition or state of a deva," divinity; divine being, deity, fairy. <strong>The</strong> term<br />

comprises all beings which are otherwise styled devas, & a list of them given at Nd2 308 & based on the<br />

principle that any being who is worshipped (or to whom an offering is made or a gift given: de --<br />

vat!=yesa' deti, as is expressed in the conclusion "ye yesa' dakkhi*eyy! te tesa' devat!") is a devat!,<br />

comprises 5 groups of 5 kinds each, viz. (1) ascetics; (2) domestic animals (elephants, horses, cows, cocks,<br />

crows); (3) physical forces & elements (fire, stone etc.); (4) lower gods (: bhumma dev!) (n!g!, suva**!,<br />

yakkh!, asur!, gandhabb!); (5) higher gods (: inhabitants of the devaloka proper) Mah!r!j!, Canda, Suriya,<br />

Inda, Brahm!), to which are added the 2 aspects of the sky -- god as devadevat! & dis! -- devat!). --<br />

Another definition at VvA 21 simply states: devat! ti devaputto pi Brahm! pi devadh"t! pi vuccati. --<br />
