of thaddha, applied to selfishness, obduracy, hypocrisy & deceit; viz. immobility, hardness, stupor,<br />

obstinacy (cp. Ger. "verstockt"): thambho ti thaddha -- bh!vo SnA 288, 333; th. thambhan! thambhitta'<br />

Note. Quite a late development of the term, caused by a misinterpretation of chambhitatta, is "fluctuation,<br />

unsteadiness, inflation" at Dhs 965 (in def. of v!yodh!tu: chambhittatta' [?] thambhitatta'. See on this Dhs.<br />

trsl. p. 242), & at Vbh 168 (in def. of vicikicch!; v.l. chambhitatta), and at Asl. 338 (of vayo). None of<br />

these meanings originally belong to the term thambha.<br />
