H!su˚ (of uncertain origin) occurs with h!sa˚ in combn with ˚pañña and is customarily taken in meaning<br />

"of bright knowledge" (i. e. h!sa+paññ!), wise, clever. <strong>The</strong> syn. javana -- pañña points to a meaning like<br />

"quick-witted," thus implying "quick" also in h!su. Kern, Toev. i.134 puts forth the ingenious expln that<br />

h!su is a "cockneyism" for !su=Sk. !$u "quick," which does not otherwise occur in P!li. Thus his expln<br />
