Vel!mika
Vel!mika (adj.) [vel!ma+ika, the word vel!ma probably a district word] "belonging to Vel!ma," at D ii.198
used as a clan -- name (f. Vel!mik!n"), with vv. ll. Vessin" & Vess!yin" (cp. Vel!ma Np. combd with
Vessantara at VbhA 414), and at D ii.333 classed with khujj!, v!manik! & kom!rik! (trsln "maidens";
Bdhgh: "very young & childish": see Dial. ii.359); v. l. cel!vik!. They are some sort of servants, esp. in
demand for a noble's retinue. See also Np. Vel!ma (the V. sutta at J i.228 sq.).
Vel!yati
Vel!yati [Denom. fr. vel!] to destroy (?) DhsA 219 (cp. Expos. ii.297); expld by viddha'seti. More
appropriate would be a meaning like "control," bound, restrict.

Vell!)in (adj.) [Is it a corruption fr. *veyy!yin=*vy!yin?] flashing (of swords) J vi.449.
Velli
Velli [dial.?] is a word peculiar to the J!taka. At one passage it is expld by the Commentary as "vedi" (i. e.
rail, cornice), where it is applied to the slender waist of a woman (cp. vil!ka & vilaggita): J vi.456. At most
of the other passages it is expld as "a heap of gold": thus at J v.506 (verse: velli -- vil!ka -- majjh!; C.:
"ettha vell" ti r!si vil!kamajjh! ti vilagga -- majjh! uttattaghana -- suva**a -- r!si -- ppabh! c' eva tanu --
d"gha -- majjh! ca"), and vi.269 (verse: kañcana -- velli -- viggaha; C.: "suva**a -- r!si -- sassir"ka --
sar"r!"). At v.398 in the same passage as vi.269 expld in C. as "kañcana -- r(pakasadisa -- sar"r!"). The idea
of "golden" is connected with it throughout.
