M!saka
M!saka [fr. m!sa2+ka=m!sa3] lit. a small bean, used as a standard of weight & value; hence a small coin
of very low value. Of copper, wood & lac (DhsA 318; cp. KhA 37; jatu˚, d!ru˚, loha˚); the suva**a˚
(golden m.) at J iv.107 reminds of the "gold" in fairy tales. That its worth is next to nothing is seen from the
descending progression of coins at DhA iii.108=VvA 77, which, beginning with kah!pa*a, a..ha -- p!da,
places m!saka & k!ha*ik! next to mudh! "gratis." It only "counts" when it amounts to 5 m!sakas. -- Vin
iii.47, 67; iv.226 (pañca˚); J i.112 (a..ha -- m!saka' na agghati is worth nothing); iv.107; v.135 (first a rain
of flowers, then of m!sakas, then kah!pa*as); DhA ii.29 (pañca -- m. -- matta' a sum of 5 m.); PvA 282
(m+a..ha˚ half -- pennies & farthings, as children's pocket -- money).
M!sakkhimh!
M!sakkhimh! at Vin iii.23 is for m! asakkhimh! "we could not"; m! here stands for na.
M!sati, M!sana, M!sin
M!sati, M!sana, M!sin [fr. m%+, for massati etc.; see masati| touch, touching, etc. in sense of eating or
taking in. So is probably to be read for !sati etc. in the foll. passages, where m precedes this ! in all cases.
Otherwise we have to refer them to a root !s=as (to eat) and consider the m as partly euphonic. --
dumapakk!ni -- m!sita J ii.446 (C. reads m!sita & explns by asita, dh!ta); visa -- m!sita Milo 302 (T. reads
visam!sita) having taken in poison; visa -- m!san -- ûpat!pa (id.) Vism 166; ti*a -- m!sin eating grass J
vi.354 (= ti*akh!daka C.). -- A similar case where Sandhi -- m -- has led to a wrong partition of syllables
and has thus been lost through syncope may be P. e)aka1, as compd with Sk. methi (cp. Prk. me.hi), pillar,
post.
M!salu
M!salu [reading uncertain] only instr. m!salun! Miln 292, Trenckner says (note p. 428): "m. is otherwise
unknown, it must mean a period shorter than 5 months. Cp. Sk. m!sala." -- Rh. D. (trsl. ii.148) translates
"got in a month," following the Sinhalese gloss. The period seems to be only a little shorter than 5
months; there may be a connection with catu in the word.
M!s!cita
M!s!cita [m!sa1+!cita] filled by the (say 6 or more) month(s), i. e. heavy (alluding to the womb in
advanced pregnancy), heaped full M i.332 (kucchi garu -- garu viya m!s!cita' maññe ti; Neumann trsls
"wie ein Sack voll Bohnen," thus taking m.=m!sa2, and !cita as "heap" which however is not justified).
This passage has given rise to a gloss at Vbh 386, where m!s!cita' maññe was added to k!yo garuko
akammañño, in meaning "heavy, languid." The other enumns of the 8 kus"ta -- vatth(ni (A iv.332; D
iii.255) do not give m. m. It may be that the resemblance between akam mañño and maññe has played a
part in reminding the Commentator of this phrase. The fact that Bdhgh comments on this passage in the
VbhA (p. 510) shows, that the reading of Vbh 386 is a very old one. Bdhgh takes m!sa in the sense of
m!sa2 & expls m!s!cita as "wet bean" (tinta m!so), thus omitting expln of !cita. The passage at VbhA 510
runs: "ettha pana m!s!cita' n!ma tintam!so, yath! tintam!so garuko hoti, eva' garuko ti adhipp!yo."
M!sika
