Br(meti
Br(meti [possible Caus. fr. br(ti, but as Geiger, P.Gr. 1412, rightly remarks "not critically sound"] to say D
i.95 (expld as "br(met( ti vadatu" DA i.265).
Br(hana
Br(hana (nt.) [fr. br(heti] expansion, increasing, spreading; cultivation, development (trs. & intrs.) Miln
313 (Kern, Toev. s. v. "amusement"); DhsA 332; VvA 20 (sukha˚). Cp. upa˚.
Br(hetar
Br(hetar [n. ag. of br(heti] increaser; one who practises, is devoted to; in phrase br(het! suññâg!r!na'
frequenter of solitary places; given up to solitary meditation M i.33, 213.
Br(heti
Br(heti [cp. Sk. b%'hayati; fr. brh2 to increase; Dhtp 346 & Dhtm 505: vuddhiya'. Cp. brahant] to cause to
grow, increase; hence: to promote, develop, practise, to put or devote oneself to; to look after, to foster,
make enjoy; practically syn. with sevati; S i.198 (saddha'); Sn 324 (kamm!ni); Dh 285 (imper.
br(haya=va..haya DhA iii.429); Ud 72; J i.289; Miln 313 (saddena sota' br.); PvA 168 (va..heti+, for
!bh!veti). -- Cp. anu˚, pari˚.
Bh. Bha
Bha (indecl.) the letter or sound (syllable) bh; figuring in Bdhgh's exegesis of the N. Bhagav! as
representing bhava, whereas ga stands for gamana, va for vanta KhA 109. -- Like ba˚ we often find bha˚
mixed up with pa˚; -- see e. g. bha*.a bha*.ati; bh represents b. in bhasta=Sk. basta, bhisa=Sk. bisa,
bhusa= Sk. bu$a. -- bha -- k!ra the sound (or ending) ˚bha, which at Vin iv.7 is given as implying contempt
or abuse, among other low terms (h"n! akkos!). This refers also to the sound (ending) ˚ya (see ya -- k!ra).
The expln for this probably is that ˚bha is abstracted from words ending thus, where the word itself meant
something inferior or contemptible, and this shade of meaning was regarded as inhering in the ending, not
in the root of the word, as e. g. in ibbha (menial).
Bhaku&i
Bhaku&i (f.) [cp. Epic Sk. bhraku&i from older bh%kuti, bhruku&i or bhr(ku&i] superciliousness Sn 485. J
iii.99; Vism 26 (˚kara*a); SnA 412. Der. bh!ku&ika (q. v.). See also bh(ku&i.
