stimulate the nerves J v.293 (rasa -- hara*iyo khobhetv! phari: see under rasa). -- Often in standard phrase
mett! -- sahagatena cetas! eka' (dutiya' etc.) disa' pharitv! viharati D ii.186; S v.115 and passim, where
pharitv! at Vism 308=VbhA 377 is expld by phusitv! !ramma*a' katv!. Cp. BSk. eka' dis!'
spharitvopasampadya viharati MVastu iii.213. Also in phrase p"tiy! sar"ra' pharati (aor. phari) to thrill the
body with rapture, e. g. J i.33; v.494; DhA ii.118; iv.102. -- 2. [in this meaning better to be derived from
sphar to spread, expand, cp. pharita & ph!lita] to spread, make expand J i.82 (metta -- citta' phari). -- 3.
[prob. of quite a diff. origin and only taken to pharati by pop. analogy, perhaps to phal=spha& to split; thus
ka&&h'attha' pharati=to be split up for fuel] to serve as, only with ˚attha' in phrases !h!rattha' ph. (after
next phrase) to serve as food Miln 152; ka&&hattha' ph. to serve as fuel A ii.95=S iii.93=It 90=J i.482;
kh!daniyattha' & bhojaniyattha' ph. to serve as eatables Vin i.201 (so to be read in preference to ˚atta'). --
