practice M i.446. -- nirodha successive passing away, fading away in regular succession, i. e. in due course.<br />

<strong>The</strong> nine stages of this process are the same as those mentioned under ˚vih!ra, & are enumd. as such at D<br />

iii.266, 290; A iv.409, 456; Ps i.35. -- vih!ra a state of gradually ascending stages, by means of which the<br />

highest aim of meditation & trance is attained, viz. complete cessation of all consciousness. <strong>The</strong>se are 9<br />

stages, consisting of the 4 jh!nas, the 4 !yatan!ni & as the crowning phrase "saññ! -- vedayitanirodha" (see<br />
