Parinibb!yana (nt.) [abstr. fr. parinibb!yin] passing away, see parinibb!yin 2 b.
Parinibb!yin
Parinibb!yin [fr. parinibb!yati] one who attains Pari- nibb!na. Of the 2 meanings registered under
parinibb!na we find No. 1 only in a very restricted use, when taken in both senses of sa -- and an --
up!disesa parinibb!na; e. g. at A ii.155 sq., where the distinction is made between a sa -- sankh!ra p. and an
a -- sankh!ra p., as these two terms also occur in the fivefold classification of "Never -- returners" (i. e.
those who are not reborn) viz. antar! -- parinibb!yin, upahacca˚, sasankh!ra˚, uddha'sota, akani&&hag!min.

Parinibb!na No. 2 (i. e. sa -- up!disesa p.) we find parinibb!yin almost as an equivalent of arahant in two
combns, viz. (a) tattha˚ (always combd with opap!tika, i. e. above the ordinary cause of birth) [cp. BSk.
tatra -- parinirv!yin an!g!min Divy 533]. It is also invariably combd with an!vattidhamma, e. g. at D i.156;

Parinibbuta
Parinibbuta (adj.) [pari+nibbuta] completely calmed, at peace, at rest (as to the distinction of the twofold
application see parinibb!na and cp., Mrs. Rh.D. Buddhism p. 191; Cpd. p. 168), viz. -- 1. gone out, or
passed away without any remaining cause of rebirth anywhere, completely extinct, finally released (fr.
rebirth & trans migration), quite dead or at rest [cp. BSk. parinirv%ta Divy 79]. It is usually applied to the
Buddha, or the Tath!gatha, but also to Theras & Arahants who have by means of moral & intellectual
perfection destroyed all germs of further existence. With ref. to Gotama Buddha: Vin ii.284 (atikkhippa'
