Parinibb!na<br />

Parinibb!na (nt.) [pari+nibb!na] "complete Nibb!na" in two meanings: 1. complete extinction of<br />

khandhalife; i. e. all possibility of such life & its rebirth, final release from (the misery of) rebirth and<br />

transmigration, death (after the last life -- span of an Arahant). This is the so -- called "an -- up!di -- sesa<br />

Parinibb!na," or "extinction with no rebirth -- substratum left." -- 2. release from cravings & attachment to<br />

life, emancipation (in this life) with the assurance of final death; freedom of spirit, calm, perfect well --<br />

being or peace of soul. This is the so -- called "sa -- up!disesa -- P.," or "extinction (of passion) with some<br />

substratum left." -- <strong>The</strong> two kinds are distinguished by Bdhgh at DhA ii.163 as follows: "arahatta -- pattito<br />

pa&&h!ya kilesa -- va&&assa khepitatt! sa -- up!di -- sesena, carima -- citta -- nirodhena khandhava&&assa<br />

khepitatt! an -- up!di -- sesena c! ti dv"hi pi parinibb!nehi parinibbut!, an -- up!d!no viya pad"po<br />

p." (see above); thus at M i.148; S iv.48; v.29; A i.44; v.65 (nicch!to nibbuto s"tibh(to etc).; A v.233=<br />

Parinibb!peti<br />

Parinibb!peti [pari+nibb!peti] to bring to complete coolness, or training (see next), emancipation or<br />

cessation of the life -- impulse, to make calm, lead to Nibb!na, to exercise self -- control, to extinguish<br />

fever of craving, or fire of r!ga, dosa, moha. Always coupled with the quâsi synonyms sameti & dameti<br />
