ABOUT US

Put simply, we plan and deliver journeys so you don’t have to. We, along with our

talented team, are all travel aficionados. Putting our many years of personal experience

to good use, we craft itineraries to suit you, your interests, your budget. Not only is

travel our passion, it is our mission to provide the very best level of service and expert

specialist knowledge – never more important than in today’s world. This is no ordinary

travel, this is memorable travel with personality, designed to inspire.

ANGELA PIRIE

With a background in group travel and product research, Ange is dedicated to

ensuring that your journey is personalised and exceeds expectations. Having

travelled to many inspiring destinations, Ange’s knowledge of Africa is secondto-none.

A few of her highlights have been hot air ballooning over the Serengeti,

swimming with dolphins in Zanzibar, and on a recent trip to Myanmar, e-biking

around the temples of Bagan.

CHRIS LYONS

Chris started his travelling career in the mid 1970’s, spending over a year travelling

Central and South America, a part of the world for which he has a real passion,

and a region he returns to regularly. Fascinated with history and archaeology,

Chris has delighted in exploring historical treasures including Angkor Wat,

Machu Picchu, and the Persepolis ruins. Many years of hosting tours means

Chris has a real understanding of the needs of every traveller.

BRETT BARCLAY

Brett has visited over 100 countries but the bucket list keeps growing! Highlights

include being in the Rio Carnival, exploring West Africa, and being immersed

in Japanese culture in ryokans (traditional inns). Brett is an avid cruiser, a rail

buff, and a huge fan of family travel (as his son can testify!). Latest adventures

include Ethiopia, “One of the most fascinating countries I have ever been to”, an

expedition cruise to Antarctica, and meeting the mountain gorillas of Uganda.

KATE COULING

With a 12-month OE that somehow stretched out to 12 years, Kate has a

particular passion for the history, people, and culture of North Africa and the

Middle East, even choosing to live in the region long enough to learn Arabic.

However, she is equally content getting lost in the alleys of Venice Island, chatting

to child monks in Bhutan, or checking in to the Manor Houses of Ireland. If

travel is a bug, Kate is delighted to have caught it.

World Journeys is a member of the Travel Agents Association of New Zealand (TAANZ) and

participates in the TAANZ Bonding Scheme for the protection of the consumer.

PERU

CHOQUEQUIRAO TREK | 4 DAYS

Hiker at Choquequirao ruins

The extensive ruins, three times the size of Machu Picchu, are located in the saddle of a high Andean ridge at 3,050

metres, so a good level of fitness is required to complete the 58km return trek. It is thought that the Inca Emperor

Pachacuti, responsible for commissioning Machu Picchu, founded Choquequirao before his son Tupaq Inka Yupanki

extended and remodelled it. The trek along some extraordinarily scenic stretches of Inca pathways provides a unique

alternative to the much busier Inca Trail, and compliments a visit to Machu Picchu.

Cuzco

DAY 1 CUZCO > PASARELA BRIDGE

Early today will be met at your hotel in Cuzco and transferred

three hours by road to the town of Cachora. Spend some time

exploring this quaint town before continuing to Capuliloq

to begin your trek. Here you will have your first view of

Choquequirao through binoculars off in the far distance. As

you hike, enjoy scenic views of the surrounding mountains

and the dramatic canyon of the Amurimac River. Descend the

mountain on a steep switchback trail to Cocamasama Pass,

before continuing onto your overnight camp site at Rosalina

Beach near the Pasarela Bridge.

DAY 2 PASARELA BRIDGE > CHOQUEQUIRAO

After an early wakeup and breakfast, begin todays hike. Descend

further into the valley before a short ascent to Santa Rosa and

some time to rest and relax. Continue to Marampata, and from

here you will witness a series of huge terraces used by Inca and

pre-Inca civilizations for agricultural purposes. There is a chance

you may see condors, or if extremely fortunate, the rare Andean

bear that is endemic to this area. Trek for another two hours

to reach the site of Choquequirao. You will have some time to

explore the ruins later in the afternoon before settling into your

nearby camp for overnight.

DAY 3 CHOQUEQUIRAO > PASARELA BRIDGE

Enjoy an extensive guided tour of these fantastic ruins. It

has been more than 100 years since the discoverer of Machu

Picchu, explorer Hiram Bingham, first discovered the existence

of Choquequirao. Extensive archaeological studies over the

years have divided the site into 12 sections. These ruins, which

are much more extensive than Machu Picchu, are still in the

process of being excavated. Because of its remote location,

Choquequirao sees very few visitors, and you feel a certain

privilege to be able to explore this hidden Inca gem. After lunch

begin the four hour descent back to your camp at Rosalina

Beach for an overnight stay.

DAY 4 PASARELA BRIDGE > CUZCO

An early start today as you hike to Cachora, a trek of around

seven hours. On arrival to Cachora you will transfer back to

your hotel in Cuzco. Accommodation in Cuzco this evening is

not included, but can be booked at additional cost.

INCLUDES: Tailor-made journey, specialist English-speaking

guide, return transport from Cuzco to the start/end point of

the trek, all meals during the trek including 3 wake up teas, 3

breakfasts, 4 morning snacks, 4 lunches, 3 afternoon teas and

3 dinners, filtered and boiled water, horses and porters for your

luggage, tent and sleeping bags.

DEPARTS: Shared tours - depart Sundays. Private tours -

depart daily.

NOTE: This tour runs from March until September, as it is too

wet in the summer months in this part of the Andes for the trip

to be comfortably operated. Shared departures operate with a

two person minimum and maximum group size of 16 people.

We recommend a minimum of two nights in Cuzco prior

to the trek to acclimatise to altitude. The maximum altitude

reached on the trek in only 3,100 metres, some 300 metres

lower than that of Cuzco and significantly lower than the Inca

Trail to Machu Picchu.

DAY 1 QUITO > COCA > SACHA LODGE

Take a short flight from Quito over the Andes to the town

of Coca. After enjoying a snack on arrival in Coca, you are

equipped with life jackets and begin an interesting two-hour trip

along the Rio Napo, one of the main tributaries of the mighty

Amazon River. See traditional fishermen, jungle settlements

and other river traffic ferrying people and supplies to remote

jungle communities. On arrival at Sacha Lodge’s riverside dock,

your luggage is collected and you begin a 20-minute jungle

walk to meet your canoes, the final leg of your journey. You are

then quietly paddled some 10 minutes across an extraordinarily

beautiful black-water lake to the lodge. Check into your

comfortable room, and after a late lunch and briefing on the

activities, commence a short afternoon excursion.

DAYS 2 & 3 SACHA LODGE

Over these two days you have a choice of activities that are

tailored to your physical abilities and interests. Groups sizes are

limited to eight guests, and each group has a local Kichwa native

guide along with an expert English-speaking naturalist guide.

Both will help reveal to you all the wonders of the Amazon

jungle. Pay a visit to the butterfly house, and be enchanted by

a myriad of colourful moths and butterflies that are bred here

for your enjoyment.

A typical day at Sacha begins at sunrise in order to take

advantage of the cool morning hours when the rainforest’s

birds and animals are most active. In the afternoon, visits begin

at around 3.00 pm and often continue into the evening, when

the nocturnal insect and frog chorus begins. Wherever the

destination, excursions proceed slowly, as the jungle vegetation

and wildlife are unveiled and explained by your expert guides.

Activities are spread out over a wide area, allowing visitors to

explore several distinct but equally fascinating habitats. Several

trails lead through pristine forest where 50-metre high kapok

trees tower above, and roots form huge buttresses to give trees

support. Other trails follow strategically raised boardwalks

in seasonally flooded forests, where walking on the ground

would be nearly impossible during most of the year due to

groundwater. One trail many choose to follow even leads

across fallen tree trunks and a steel cable zip-line through rich

swampland!

A favourite activity is to be paddled in dugout canoes along

tannin-rich black-water creeks, where luxuriant lianas, orchids,

bromeliads and palm trees thrive. And wherever an outing may

lead, the possibilities of spotting animals - from the tiny pygmy

marmoset to the magnificent ocelot or puma - are endless. For

adventurous souls, the day does not necessarily end with dinner.

Night walks and canoe trips often reveal creatures seldom seen

during daylight. Reptiles such as chameleons along with giant

insects and moths, rule the jungle after sunset.

DAY 4 SACHA LODGE > QUITO

After breakfast, walk back to the river and perhaps enjoy a

visit to the parrot clay lick close by (weather permitting). Then

head back upriver, passing a variety of cargo boats and water

taxis that are an essential form of transport for the jungle

communities. On arrival in Coca, you are transferred to the

airport for your flight back to Quito. Arrangements end on

arrival at Quito Airport.

GIVING BACK

As you will see in this brochure, we visit some of the most pristine locations in the world; some are home to a

local population less fortunate than ours, to endangered wildlife, or to fragile environments and ecosystems.

All too often, their plight goes unseen, whether its the

devastation in marine environments caused by ghost nets

in the Indian Ocean, cheetah being poisoned in Namibia,

rhino massacred for their horns, or the struggles of disabled

children in India. World Journeys is proud to support a

number of charitable organisations in their quest to

minimise humankind’s impact on the environment and

bring relief to those in need. Join us in aiding these noble

organisations to keep our world beautiful and prosperous

so that future generations can enjoy inspiring journeys of

their own.

WE SUPPORT THESE ORGANISATIONS

Travellers help struggling schools in the areas they

visit by packing supplies such as pencils, soccer

balls, stethoscopes, and blood pressure kits. See

packforapurpose.org for more information.

Supporting the marginalised children of Chennai,

India who live with intellectual and/or physical

disabilities, the Mithra rehabilitation centre helps

these young people reach their potential.

Forming links between travel, conservation

and sustainable development in Namibia,

Conservation Travel Foundation works at a

local level, investing 100% of funds donated to

worthwhile projects.

This rehabilitation centre for poisoned or injured

(by traps) leopards and cheetahs also educates

local game farmers on how to avoid these cats

eating their stock.

Arya Kanya Gurukul, Delhi

For more than 7 decades, Gurukul school has

been providing education to hundreds of girls,

supported by IT, with values that will enable

them to be custodians of society.

Supporting the communities who live in Africa’s

wilderness regions, Africa Foundation ensures

communities see meaningful benefits from

conservation, through effective consultation and

collaboration.
