Pollution Control Equipment (POL) Overview Return to top Investments into environmental protection over the past several years were around 20 billion CZK per year. Most of the investment – over one third - has so far been targeted at wastewater treatment. Currently, almost 96 percent of waste water is treated in over 2,000 waste water treatment plants (WWTP). Market demand for advanced technologies is mostly satisfied by imports. European companies dominate the market. The quality of tap drinking water is high. Nevertheless Czechs have become big consumers of bottled water. The use of home filtration systems is also growing slowly. With the recent repeated flood disasters, the government has also started to focus more on anti-flood measures. In the years 2007 – 2012, the Ministry of Agriculture plans to invest in this area CZK14 billion ($0.7 billion) - CZK10billion ($0.5 billion) for floodprevention measures, CZK4 billion ($0.2 billion) for reconstruction of ponds, construction of water reservoirs and land adjustments. In December 2008, the Finance Ministry announced a public contract for the complex liquidation of environmental damages created before major industries were privatized. All burdens are to be liquidated as one contract, the value of which is up to CZK115 billion. Only a fourth of the environmental damage the state previously pledged to remove has actually been removed over the past 15 years. The deadline for the companies that were successful in the first round of the tender to submit their price bids is June 2010. Once the tender is awarded, it is expected that the demand for remediation technologies and services will grow quickly. Remediation works are expected take several years.
• Project financing comes from various sources including the state budget, local government budgets, environmental funds, EU structural funds and from individual investors and entrepreneurs. With a Czech partner, U.S. firms can compete for EU funds.
