The girlswere never close, but findingTilly’s Dungeons & Dragonsnotebook catapults Agnes “intothe imaginary world that was hersister’s refuge.”The play, from the VietnamAmerican founder of VampireCowboys Theatre Company —“America’s best known geektheatre company” — debuted in2011 and is packed with 1990spop culture. The version to beperformed in Malibu has beenadapted to the virtual realm.“It’s been an interesting experiencedirecting a show on Zoom,”Plaia told Surfside News. “Imissed being in person with mytheater students, and there werelots of new challenges to problemsolve along the way, but Ithink we’ve been able to producesomething to be proud of.”“In rehearsals, which was alldone over Zoom,” he added, “wefurther adapted it to highlight thefact that the characters in the playare actually on Zoom. We workedon character development justlike we would normally do for thestage, tackling the show like anyother show.”Senior Kira Smit plays Agnes.“She kind of starts off the playas this ditsy cheerleader, whocares about what she wears, herboyfriend, her grades, she’s veryfocused on school,” the 17-yearoldtold Surfside News. “Along theadventure, she begins to questionwhether that’s all there is to life.”Agnes starts out knowing littleabout D&D, said Kira. “Thereare evil fairies, demon queens,demons. She has no idea what’sgoing on at all … She starts realizingit’s real people that are playingthese roles.Along the way, “She comes toconfront the guilt over not knowingher sister very well, and shedevelops into a more acceptingperson.”Kira, who plans to attend UCBerkeley, majoring in immunology,molecular genetics or microbiology,said she played her partfrom her desk in her bedroom.“It was weird acting in thesame place I am learning school.It’s been a weird year,” she said.To help make the productionwork, the students received allthe equipment they needed, fromlights to cameras to green screens.(Kira borrowed her youngerbrother’s green screen.)Like other Zoom “meetings,”production on “Monsters” had theoccasional glitch.“There were these times whenyou’d be in a scene, then the Zoomdropped, their wifi dropped,” saidKira.All the material is now in postproduction,in preparation for thetwo-day run.“It’s definitely been a weird experience,doing theater on Zoom,”said Kira. “It was cool to explorea new medium.
