are willing to destroy the sacredplaces of our Indigenous people,somehow viewing them as ‘lessthan,’ because they are part of thenatural world. These holy placeshave stood for hundreds of yearslonger than our churches andsynagogues. They are part of theearth; they are living souls whosesacred power is planted in thesoil, ever-growing and changing,enabling a connection with spirit.We Jews understand awe andrespect of nature. Our ancestors,too, found holy places outdoors.So many ancient encounterswith God occurred in places ofnature: God speaking to Mosesfrom a thornbush; Jacob’s visionof the angels in the desert nightsky. And today, for many of us,our moments of spirituality occurwhen we encounter and meet thesacred in the earth, the holy placesbeneath the skies. We understandthe links to land, to place, tothe earth, the soil and nature.And so we must remember andacknowledge sacred places ofspirit, to see that it is not onlybricks and mortar which createplaces of the soul. And once we seethat, then we have a responsibilityto protect those spaces whichhave deep spiritual meaning,just as we would the Kotel andother sacred Jewish sites. Weare called to protect the sacredplaces for all, especially our FirstNations people, who walked thisland, who heard its stories andwho sang its songs for thousandsof years before we were here.New Zealand has a treaty withits Maori nations. A river sacredto the Whanganui people of theNorth Island was, in a world first,given the same rights againstharm as a living entity, protectinga holy site, a sacred covenant.In this year, more than ever,when we have been challengedto find sacred place outside ourbuildings, maybe we can expandour understanding of where wefind the holy, to honour andprotect the sites of all peoples andto recognise the power of natureand land, to elevate our spiritsand connect us with the sacred. Ihope and pray that we can cometogether in peace, all nations,religions and spiritual traditions,to learn from one another, tolisten to each other’s stories, andtogether sing the song of this landand all its peoples, in harmony,respect and honour.1.
