As awful as 2020 has been, it taught many
of us transcendental lessons. For me, it was
adaptability, compassion, creative thinking,
understanding, being open to opportunities,
and putting health at the top of the priorities.
Because of the changes due to the pandemic, we at VIVA NOLA
provided more services than ever. Some were community-oriented, like
the live translation of the Governor’s COVID-19 and hurricane updates,
which were critical for our Spanish-speaking audience.
We also provided interviews with community leaders and organizations
with important information and resources to everyone in the metro New
Orleans area. We partnered with Fox 8 News to provide content in
Spanish on their website.
Business-wise, we pivoted from a print outlet to a multimedia platform
that includes the website, social media, and television. Instead of
shrinking to the challenges, we rose to the occasion and strengthened
the VIVA NOLA brand. We also launched our corporate streaming
services and consulted many organizations on transitioning from their
regular in-person events to successful, dynamic, virtual productions.
We launched a unique virtual festival featuring local artists with music,
dances, poetry, and were able to give more exposure to advertisers
and local businesses. We launched Hola Salud with Ochsner Health, a
series to promote a healthy lifestyle and educate Louisiana’s Spanishspeaking
community.
We have been working hard to make all of this happen, and we are
proud of having pivoted to create these different projects and initiatives.
We hope to continue to support our community, our leaders, and
small businesses. We expect the economy to reactivate, so the many
impacted companies can thrive again. We are here for you and want
to be ready to help businesses reach out to our multicultural audience
as soon as they bounce back!
Stay safe! Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

Hidden Holiday Gems: Winter Herbs
That Double as Immune Boosters
By Lia Threat
@wellnesswithlia
The talk during the
holidays this year
will most likely be
politics, COVID-19, and
who is coming over to visit.
Many will still gather around
the table, albeit in lesser
numbers, while others will
be visiting from a distance.
Whatever the conversation
may be, building the body’s
resilience by consuming
whole foods and herbs may
boost immunity if we are
unknowingly sharing the
table with someone sick.
Two common herbs are
fresh thyme and rosemary.
Both herbs are great with
roasted vegetables, proteins
and added as infusions for
honey, oils, and vinegar. They
are delicious minced in a
salad dressing, hearty stew,
or casserole.
Rosemary and thyme
are anti-inflammatory
and antimicrobial, and
thyme is known for being
antiparasitic. In a doubleblind,
placebo-controlled
study of over 300 patients,
thyme and ivy syrup was
used in acute bronchitis
patients to relieve symptoms
associated with their cough.
Another herb to pay
attention to is sage. Sage
is an excellent addition
to casseroles and meat
dishes. Sage also shines
with roasted squashes or
potatoes. In traditional
medicine, sage is well
known in Latin America
for inflammation, diarrhea,
heartburn, dizziness, and
seizures, to name a few.
Try to find multiple dishes
that incorporate more than
one of the herbs above for
your holiday meals this year.
Happy Holidays!

Sorpresas Navideñas: Hierbas de invierno que
mejoran la inmunidad Por Lia Threat @wellnesswithlia
La conversación durante las
celebraciones navideñas
de este año será, muy
probablemente, sobre política,
COVID-19, y quién viene a visitar.
Muchos todavía se reunirán
alrededor de la mesa, aunque
en números más pequeños,
mientras que otros nos visitarán
a distancia. Cualquiera que sea
la conversación, desarrollar
la resistencia del cuerpo
consumiendo alimentos integrales
y hierbas puede aumentar la
inmunidad en caso de que, sin
saberlo, compartamos la mesa
con alguien que pueda estar
enfermo.
Dos hierbas muy comunes son
el tomillo y el romero, ambas
excelentes para consumir frescas
con verduras asadas, proteínas, o
agregándolas a infusiones en miel,
aceites y vinagres. Estas hierbas
también son deliciosas picadas
en un aderezo para ensaladas, un
guiso espeso, o una cazuela.
El romero y el tomillo
son antiinflamatorios y
antimicrobianos, y el tomillo es
conocido por ser antiparasitario.
Un estudio de carácter doble
ciego, controlado con placebo,
analizó a más de 300 pacientes
que utilizaron el tomillo en un
jarabe de hiedra en pacientes con
bronquitis aguda para aliviar los
síntomas asociados con su tos.
Otra hierba a la que hay que
prestar atención es la salvia.
La salvia es un excelente
complemento para guisos
y platos de carne. También
resalta su sabor con calabazas
o patatas asadas. En la
medicina tradicional, la
salvia es reconocida en
América Latina para
tratar la inflamación,
diarrea, acidez, mareos,
convulsiones, entre otros.
Trate de encontrar varios
platos que incorporen
más de una de las hierbas
mencionadas e incorporarlas en
sus comidas navideñas este año.
¡Felices fiestas!

The Gift of Wine (Knowledge)
By Rebeca M. Pinhas, CSW, CSWS
@vinomomnola
As the end of year holidays
approach, many of us struggle
to find the balance between
normalcy and safety. COVID-19 has
been around for almost a year (even
longer in other parts of the world), and
although it has become part of our daily
life, it is impossible not to feel a little bit
down about not spending time with our
relatives and friends. There is no easy
answer to the dilemmas we have faced in
2020, but finding new ways to enjoy what
once was normal –such as sharing a
glass of wine with our friends – is vital to
overcome challenging times.
During one of my recent classes,
I stopped and thought about how
fortunate we are to have the resources
and technology to taste the same
wines and the same food bites while
each one of us is in our own home.
If there is something this year has
taught us is that experiences are
more valuable than material things
since we do not know when they will
occur again. After all, wine is not as
meaningful or enjoyable if we do not
share it with others.
If you are thinking about what to get
your loved ones this holiday season,
consider the gift of wine knowledge,
as well as the opportunity to share a
tasting with those who are important
to you.
Vino Mom offers private classes/
tastings scheduled at your
convenience. Choose between a
fully online experience – a personally
curated tasting kit for the participants
to taste during a virtual meeting -, and
small-format live classes. Packages
start at $175 for up to 6 participants,
and your class/tasting is fully
customizable, from the quantity, type,
style to the cost of the wines.
You can find further information below.
I am available and happy to answer all
your questions!

El Regalo del Vino y su Conocimiento
Por Rebeca M. Pinhas, CSW, CSWS
@vinomomnola

MONSERRATH AVILA’S
HEALTHY LIFESTYLE
JOURNEY
By AnaMaria Bech
@anamabech
10 VIVA NOLA ~ December 2020
When you meet
Monserrath
Avila, you find a
motivated, confident, healthy,
and fit beautiful woman. A
devoted mother and wife,
and an entrepreneur, who
provides fresh, healthy,
portioned meals through
Happy Living Meal Prep,
the business she created
with her husband, Sebastian
Gomez.
Once you learn about her
business, you understand
why Avila lives such a
healthy lifestyle. But when
you follow her on her
Instagram profile, @itsme.
monse, you not only find
motivational phrases and
workout posts, but you also
find surprising before and
after photos.
You realize her healthy
journey started a while ago
when she was 80 pounds
heavier. The difference is
striking, and her bravery
in the way she shares
about this healthy lifestyle
journey with her followers is
admirable.
Avila began learning about
focusing on fueling her
body with the right nutrients
and with whole foods. She
disliked vegetables but
forced herself to incorporate
them in her meals. She
began to do food prepping
to control her portions and
create the right combinations
of protein, carbohydrates,
and healthy fats. When
people started noticing her
changes, they asked her for
advice and kept asking for
recipes. Avila understood
that there could be an
opportunity for a business
that would allow her to
create some income while
helping others.
Gomez bought the first box
of containers and told his
wife that he believed she
could have a successful
business. Soon after, Happy
Living Meal Prep got started
about three years ago. The
company has been an
economic opportunity for
the family, but it also serves
Avila’s fulfillment. “I love being
able to help others achieve a
healthier lifestyle.”
Social media has helped
Avila promote her business
and also has provided her
company during her fitness
process. “I feel this is a lonely
journey. When I share it on
social media, other people
can see that if I made it, they
could also make it.” Avila has
been able to connect with
other women, especially with
other moms. “They ask me
all kinds of questions. They
ask how I’m not ashamed to
post pictures where you see
my stretch marks. I answer
and try to remind them that
we must love our body, our
temple. I feel that by sharing
my changes, I can inspire
other women.”
Though scrutinized by the
internet trolls from time to
time and being accused
of achieving her results
through plastic surgery, Avila
stresses healthy nutrition
and controlled portions for
long-term weight loss. Avila
also reminds everyone to
be patient. “Making small
changes every day helps. In
a year, those small changes
will make a big difference.
She has eliminated the word
“diet” and has replaced it with
“lifestyle.” She understands
the most challenging part
for most is realizing that
this process takes time.
She shares her “Before and
After” photos to serve as
a testament that amazing
changes don’t happen
quickly, but that they are
achievable.
During the weekend, Avila
and Gomez work to prepare,
package, and deliver
meals to clients in the New
Orleans metropolitan area.
Customers can pick from
one or two meals per day
and sign up by Friday to get
“
I love being

others achieve
a healthy
lifestyle.
VIVANOLAMAG.COM ~ 11
their meals for the following week. Convenience
is this service’s main appeal, and the fact that
the food is never frozen makes it the healthiest
meal prep alternative in town. There are no added
preservatives, and the food can be kept fresh in
the refrigerator for up to 5 days.”
“Happy Living Meal Prep is an easy, fun lifestyle.
When you get your food, you will not say it’s
flavorless. We always changed up our menu.
You don’t have to worry about the right portions
and nutrients. It’s an exploding of Colombian and
Honduran flavors, and people will never feel they
are dieting,” explains Avila.
“
Her daughter, Sofia, has been her greatest
inspiration to improve her everyday life. “She is my
motor.” The physical changes have been a plus
because, for Avila, the difference in her mentality
has been the most important. “If we have no
control of our bodies, what would we be able to
control? I feel good. I have energy. I can do things
with my family and my daughter that I couldn’t do
before when I was overweight. I was always tired;
I had no desire. I was miserable,” Avila added.
Start today. Make a small
change. No one will ever
say ‘I regret eating healthy
today.’
The COVID-19 pandemic has made more evident
the need to maintain a healthy lifestyle. “I believe
better nutrition is the best medicine to combat this
virus and to keep the body strong to stay healthy.”
Avila has developed a need to exercise and to
take care of her health every day. When she
doesn’t take the time to get it done, she feels she
is cheating herself out of the gift of a healthy life.
“Start today. Make a small change. No one will
ever say, ‘I regret eating healthy today.’ It is about
making small changes and being very patient.”
If your new year’s goals include a healthier
lifestyle, consider this local prep meal service.

EL CAMINO DE MONSERRATH AVILA A UN ESTILO DE VIDA SALUDABLE
Por AnaMaria Bech
@anamabech
Cuando conoces a Monserrath
Avila, te encuentras a una
mujer hermosa motivada,
segura de sí misma, saludable y
en forma. Una devota madre y
esposa, y una emprendedora que
ofrece planes de comida sana
convenientemente empacada a
través de la compañía que creó con
su esposo, Sebastián Gómez, Happy
Living Meal Prep.
Al conocer sobre su negocio,
entendemos por qué Avila lleva
un estilo de vida tan saludable.
Al seguirla en su perfil de
Instagram, @itsme.monse, no solo
encuentras frases motivacionales
admirable.
Ávila aprendió a concentrarse
en alimentar su cuerpo con los
nutrientes adecuados y con
alimentos integrales. No le gustaban
las verduras, pero se obligó a
incorporarlas en sus comidas.
Comenzó a preparar alimentos con
porciones controladas y creando
las combinaciones adecuadas de
proteínas, carbohidratos y grasas
saludables. Cuando la gente empezó
a notar sus cambios, le pedían
consejos y recetas. Ávila vio la
posibilidad de montar un negocio
que le permitiría generar algunos
ingresos mientras ayudaba a otros.
Gómez compró la primera caja de
VIVANOLAMAG.COM ~ 13
exitoso. Poco después, nació Happy
Living Meal Prep, hace ya casi tres años.
La empresa ha sido una oportunidad
económica para la familia, pero para Ávila
significa sentirse realizada. “Me encanta
“Me
hacen todo tipo de preguntas. Me
preguntan cómo no me da vergüenza
publicar fotos donde ves mis estrías.
Respondo y trato de recordarles que
debemos amar nuestro cuerpo, nuestro
templo. Siento que al compartir mis
cambios, puedo inspirar a otras mujeres “.
14 VIVA NOLA ~ December 2020
perder peso a largo plazo. Ávila también
les recuerda a todos que deben tener
paciencia.
No
se agregan conservantes
y los alimentos se pueden
mantener frescos en el
refrigerador hasta por 5
días”.
“Happy Living Meal
Prep es un estilo de vida
fácil y divertido. Cuando
recibes tu comida, no
puedes decir que es
aburrida y que no tiene
sabor. Siempre estamos
cambiando nuestro
menú. Las personas no
tienen que preocuparse
“
por obtener las porciones y los nutrientes
adecuados.
“Si
no tenemos control de nuestros cuerpos,
¿qué podemos controlar? Me siento bien.
Tengo energía. Puedo hacer cosas con mi
familia y mi hija que no podía hacer antes
cuando tenía sobrepeso. Siempre estaba
cansada; No tenía deseos. Me sentía
alimentos.

Bayardo de Murguia:
Leaping into Hollywood on His Own
By Cody Downey

After graduating from the
University of San Diego,
Bayardo De Murguia moved
from San Diego to Los Angeles to
become an actor. The former college
football player moved to the city not
knowing one person, but he decided
to pave his way to success through his
determination.
“I didn’t have a guide. I just immersed
myself in Los Angeles,” De Murguia
said. “Everyone has a different journey
in their careers as an artist. So, you just
take and learn from everybody and all of
their experiences and fix your own.”
During his time in college, De Murguia
transitioned from football player to actor
thanks to a theater class and his growing
love of film and performance.
“Just the ability to tell stories, make
people laugh, make people cry using
myself as a tool was so awesome, and it’s
such a fulfilling feeling,” he said.
Throughout his career, De Murguia has
found himself in numerous projects,
from one-episode roles on series like
“CSI” and “Shooter” to voice acting
roles.
De Murguia said he enjoys doing some
of his voice acting roles because it makes
him feel like a kid again. Initially, as a
Spanish-only speaker, he said he learned
English by copying things he would see
in cartoons and video games.
“I was this little Mexican kid that would
like to mimic everything,” he said. “So,
I was always fascinated by that, and
20 VIVA NOLA ~ December 2020
then as I got older, voiceover acting was
something that I wanted to get into.”
However, for De Murguia’s upcoming
role, he moves from the world of
cartoons and cop dramas to the world
of competitive ballet in Netflix’s “Tiny
Pretty Things.”
Based on the novel by Sona Charaipotra
and Dhonielle Clayton, “Tiny Pretty
Things” follows a young ballerina who
enters an elite ballet school filled with
drama and rivalries in a story described
as “Black Swan” meets “Pretty Little
Liars.” In the series, De Murguia plays
Ramon Acosta, a strict Cuban-American
ballet instructor who will do everything
it takes to get his students to perform the
best.
De Murguia was initially unsure about
getting the role when auditioning for
the teen drama as “it’s all pretty people.”
However, with some insistence from his
fiance, he eventually kept working on his
audition tape and then getting the role in
what he described as the “easiest, most
streamlined, perfect audition situation.”
“Normally, you hear horror stories of,
‘I tested, and I did a chemistry read,
and then I didn’t hear anything for
three months, and then I got fired and
this and that,’” he said. “Mine was like,
‘I auditioned. All of a sudden I met
everybody and then I was in Canada.’”
In playing Ramon, De Murguia
described his character as a very
passionate and honest person who uses
any method he can as a teacher to get the
best and worst out of an artist.
“He embraces the darkness. He embraces
the crappy parts of the world and what
you go through, and if he can get the
best out of you as an artist by focusing
on that, that’s what he is all about, which
causes conflict with others,” he said.
De Murguia said he prepared for the
role by studying Cuban ballet dancer
Carlos Acosta and watching films and
documentaries about ballet to immerse
himself in that world and learn about
ballet’s Cuban style. He also said that
the cast spent time before filming to
do ballet rehearsal, working alongside
different choreographers.
“It was the sorest that I had ever
been, and although I joke that my bar
technique is superb, my centre work
does need a little help,” he said. “But, it
was cool just to be there early and focus
on ballet.”
In being a Latino actor, De Murguia
said he looks to always bring truth and
authenticity into whatever role he plays,
whether it be a cop or a cartel member.
However, with his role in “Tiny Pretty
Things,” he said it was nice not to try and
be something he already is while also
stepping into a new type of role.
“The thing about Ramon that was great
was that not only am I learning about
a new world, I’m also creating a strong
Latino character within it. But, with the
liberty of not focusing on that,” he said.
“The focus was on who Ramon is, and
what he is as a person, and then in the
background, the fact that he is Cuban-
American.”
With the push in the film and television industry to
feature more diverse voices behind the camera, De
Murguia said that he hopes for more opportunities
to give accurate and authentic representation to his
fellow Latino-Americans.
I auditioned. All of a sudden, I
met everybody, and then I was in
“ Canada.”
“Even though I was raised in Mexico and then came
here when I was young, I view myself as an American
and having both cultures within me. That’s just who I
am,” he said. “The more opportunities I can just be me
and have my background in the background and not
be the focus, I think that’ll be awesome.”
As he awaits the release of “Tiny Pretty Things” on
December 14, De Murguia says that he has spent his
time during COVID-19 working on his acting skills,
staying creative, and thinking about what is most
important.
“The one thing about COVID is that it has reminded
myself and friends and other artists what we need to
focus on because stuff can be taken away very quickly,
and we’ve got to remind ourselves to stay focused and
stay healthy,” he said. “It reminds us sometimes of
how expendable we are.”
Though De Murguia hasn’t been to New Orleans yet,
he said that his goal is to ride his motorcycle from
somewhere like Miami or Atlanta to New Orleans
next year. When he comes to New Orleans, he said he
would focus his time on music and food.
“As much as people are like ‘I want to go down
Bourbon Street’ and Mardi Gras and all that, I just
think the music scene is awesome,” he said. “There
isn’t a lot of opportunity for that [live music] at the
moment but, I’m definitely a big fan of jazz and blues
and Cajun food and seafood.”
As he continues to look forward to the next year,
De Murguia hopes for “Tiny Pretty Things” to get
a season two and learn more about directing to tell
stories and become a resource to others.
“I came to L.A. knowing no one and then just slowly
built from there. I’d love to be that person in the
future to give opportunities to people like me, like us,
that come to build their way,” he said. “Sometimes,
you may not know who to ask or what’s going on; I
would like to be that voice in the future to help give
opportunities.”

“Siempre me
y Dhonielle Clayton, “Tiny Pretty
“Black Swan” y “Pretty Little Liars”.
dijo.
De Murguia dijo que se preparó para
el papel estudiando al bailarín de ballet
cubano Carlos Acosta y viendo películas
y documentales sobre ballet para
sumergirse en ese mundo y aprender
sobre el estilo cubano del ballet. También
compartió que el elenco pudo pasar un
tiempo antes de la filmación para hacer
ensayos de ballet junto a diferentes
coreógrafos. “Fue lo más agotador que
he intentado, y aunque siempre bromeo
“No
“Vine a Los Ángeles sin conocer a nadie y he ido
construyendo poco a poco desde entonces. Me encantaría
“A veces, no sabemos a quién

30 Films to Keep
Celebrating Hispanic
Heritage By Cody Downey
@codyalexdowney
A great way to explore our culture is through film. Though Latino and Hispanic representation in Hollywood has been
lacking, many films have focused on Latino life and history. Movies portray from historical dramas, family comedies,
stories during the Mexican revolution to the activist movements during the 1960s.
I have created a list of 30 films that include Latino and Hispanic representation. We will describe five movies per month.
To make this list more interesting, I decided to stray away from the typical films that are usually suggested, such as “La
Bamba,” “Selena,” and “Stand and Deliver.” I hope you find a new favorite and broaden your scope of films.
This list doesn’t even cover everything, such as the films of icons such as Rita Moreno, Jennifer Lopez, and Andy Garcia or
films released outside of the United States. Make it a point to watch some of these films or maybe come up with a list of
your own. Either way, find a unique way to honor our history and keep it alive.
como “La Bamba”, “Selena” y “Stand and Deliver”.

the Real Estate Industry, one of my
main focuses with the New Orleans
Business Alliance, there has been a
lot of uncertainty. I have been taking a
close look at what is happening in the
public and private sectors and consumer
behavior. Ultimately, the Real Estate
Industry, and almost every industry for
that matter, is affected by these three
areas. Without a doubt, one of the most
challenging aspects of these times
has been uncertainty. COVID does
not have a precise expiration date. A
couple of weeks ago, we did not know
the presidential election results, and
we still do not know if some of the
consumer trends will stick for the longer
term. However, it is also essential to
acknowledge that there are other things
that we do know. For example, we know
that critical federal support will continue.
A great example of federal support is the
Opportunity Zones Program. This vital
tool was established by Congress as
part of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act
and aimed to increase investment and
revitalize communities. Since most of
this program is in private hands, it offers
a simple way to reinvest capital gains
into distressed communities through
Opportunity Funds.
There has been increased interest
in investments with social impact
within the private sector, particularly
those promoting equity, diversity, and
inclusion. This interest is part of the
corporate response followed by the
killing of George Floyd. For example,
Bank of America announced that it
would be committing 1 billion dollars
to economic opportunity initiatives.
They understand that the underlying
community and social disparities have
accelerated and intensified during
the global pandemic. Mastercard has
pledged $500 million to help close the
racial wealth and opportunity gap for
black communities across America. This
year, several companies have decided to
add Juneteenth, which commemorates
the end of slavery in America, as a paid
company holiday. The list includes
companies like JCPenney, Google,
Target, Lyft, Mastercard, The New York
Times, and Nike, among many others.
PWC released a survey that shows
how consumers are in “limbo” with 49%
of consumers surveyed are avoiding
leaving their homes, 50% are working
from home remotely, 42% avoiding public
transportation, and 57% practicing social
distance from friends and community.
Nesting at home means there is much
more leisure time, leading to other
consumption patterns such as online
shopping, exercising at home, cooking
more at home, etc. These consumer
behaviors could ultimately have a
long-lasting effect on how businesses
operate, and because of this, many
companies are currently evaluating their
real estate needs.
With all of this happening in our
environment, businesses and
professionals could follow some best
practices: 1) Base your strategy on
what you do know, 2) Stay in touch with
industry leaders through professional
associations, and 3) Leverage business
tools available to the public.
Base your strategy on what you do
know.
It is easy to be overwhelmed when so many
variables are in place. In this case, the best
plan is to evaluate what we do know and
develop a game plan based on this. As
I mentioned before, we understand that
some investors and corporations have an
increased interest in equity and diversity.
There are also federal programs that are
promoting investment in distressed areas.
Are you a minority-owned business? Could
you serve a minority community? Perhaps
you can leverage a national program.
Stay in touch with industry leaders.
There are many organizations in our
community that bring together leaders and
professionals from all backgrounds. A great
way to stay aware of trends is to join one of
these organizations or attend some events.
In the Real Estate Industry, I follow ICSC and
the Urban Land Institute.
Leverage business tools available
to the public.
The New Orleans Business Alliance offers
a suite of tools that allow businesses
to understand the market. Regarding
consumer behavior, the organization can
provide businesses with real-time data
of who their customers are in terms of
demographics and consumer preferences
and when and how often they visit their
establishments. These reports are valuable
when we are uncertain of what consumer
trends will stick after the challenges
presented by COVID. Visit www.nolaba.
org for more information on this and other
business tools.
Finally, I would add that whatever you do,
don’t be discouraged. Be mindful of what is
still within your power to do and do it. Keep
moving; keep being productive.

Mejores Prácticas
de Negocios
en Tiempos de
Incertidumbre
By Alejandra Guzmán
@aleguzman
Navegar nuestra
actualidad se ha
convertido en un desafío
para las empresas de todos
los sectores. En la industria
inmobiliaria, en la cual enfoco
mi trabajo con el New Orleans
Business Alliance, ha habido
mucha incertidumbre. He
estado observando de cerca
lo que está sucediendo en el
sector público, el sector privado
y en el comportamiento de los
consumidores y la industria
inmobiliaria, como casi todas
las demás industrias, se ve
afectada por estas tres áreas.
Sin duda, uno de los aspectos
más desafiantes de estos
tiempos es que hay muchas
cosas que desconocemos,
COVID no tiene una fecha clara
de vencimiento, hasta hace un
par de semanas no sabíamos
cuáles serían los resultados de
las elecciones presidenciales
y aún no sabemos si algunas
de las tendencias de consumo
se mantendrán a largo plazo.
Sin embargo, también es
importante reconocer que hay
otras cosas que sí sabemos,
por ejemplo, sabemos que
continuarán algunos programas
federales, como el Opportunity
Zones Program (Programa de
Zonas de Oportunidad).
Este programa es una
herramienta importante
establecida por el Congreso
como parte de la Ley de
Empleos y Reducción de
Impuestos de 2017 y tiene
como objetivo aumentar la
inversión y revitalizar las
comunidades. Dado que la
mayor parte de los fondos del
programa están en manos del
sector privado, el programa
ofrece una forma sencilla de
reinvertir las ganancias de
capital en comunidades en
dificultades.
Dentro del sector privado se
ha incrementado el interés
en inversiones con impacto
social, en particular, aquellas
que promueven la equidad,
la diversidad y la inclusión.
Esto es parte de la respuesta
corporativa seguida por el
asesinato de George Floyd.
Por ejemplo, Bank of America
anunció que destinaría 1 billón
de dólares a iniciativas de
oportunidades económicas.
Estas organizaciones entienden
que las disparidades sociales
y comunitarias subyacentes
que existen se han acelerado
e intensificado durante la
pandemia mundial. Mastercard
ha prometido $500 millones
para ayudar a cerrar la brecha
de oportunidades y riqueza
racial para las comunidades
afroamericanas en todo
Estados Unidos. Además,
varias empresas han decidido
este año incluir el 19 de junio,
fecha de conmemoración del
fin de la esclavitud en Estados
Unidos, un día feriado pagado.
La lista incluye empresas
como JCPenney, Google, Target, Lyft,
Mastercard, The New York Times, Nike,
entre muchas más.
La empresa PWC publicó una encuesta
que muestra cómo los consumidores
están en el “limbo”: el 49% de los
consumidores encuestados evitan salir
de sus hogares, el 50% trabajan desde
casa de forma remota, el 42% evitan el
transporte público y el 57% practican
distanciamiento social. Quedarse en casa
significa que hay mucho más tiempo
libre que conduce a otros patrones de
consumo, como compras en línea, hacer
ejercicio en casa, cocinar más en casa,
etc.
Institute.
Aproveche las herramientas
comerciales disponibles para el
público.
El New Orleans Business Alliance
ofrece un conjunto de herramientas que
ayudan a las empresas a comprender el
mercado. En cuanto a comportamiento
del consumidor, la organización puede
proporcionar a las empresas datos
en tiempo real sobre quiénes son sus
clientes en términos demográficos y de
preferencias de consumo. Los reportes
también incluyen información que aclara
cuándo y con qué frecuencia visitan sus
establecimientos. Este tipo de informes
son particularmente valiosos cuando no
estamos seguros de qué tendencias de
consumo se mantendrán con el COVID.
Visite www.nolaba.org para obtener
más información sobre esta y otras
herramientas comerciales.
Reflexione y
analice qué información todavía está a su
alcance para tomar acción.
¡Siga moviéndose. Continúe siendo
productivo!
