The University of Eastern Finland, have together with Nanjing
University launched up the Sino‐Finnish Environmental Research
Centre (SFERC) operating on the Nanjing University campus. The
SFERC will be a permanent satellite campus of the University of
Eastern Finland (UEF).

THE GOAL
• The SFERC is to promote and facilitate research and education in the area
of environmental and related sciences.
• Furthermore the goal is to implement multi-disciplinary research projects,
exchange scientific information, provide students and young scientists with
international education and training opportunities.
• To be a platform for joint research and training and serve as an
international scientific forum in the area of current environmental topics as
well as for long-term scientific research.
• The objective is to become globally recognized centre of excellence in
environmental research and in post-graduate education.

Scientific Areas:
The SFERC shall be dedicated mainly on environmental studies and
post-graduate education, on developing international cooperative
researchh programs g th that t ffocus on th the ecosystem t andd environmental i t l
changes, their consequences on human health, economy, natural
resource management, and environmental engineering. The
collaboration shall be initiated by addressing the following eight main
themes:
• Environmental behavior and ecotoxicity of chemicals
• Water, air and soil quality
• Environment and health
• Environmental policy and law
• Technologies for pollution control and remediation
• Climate change and ecosystem management
• Sustainability of bioenergy production
• Natural resources and land use
