This summer, pleated skirts trending in the fashion press and retail sector. But how is pleated<br />
fabric cut and sewn? Here are some tips for cutting the side seams and hem.<br />

You simply need to make a<br />
perpendicular straight cut to the<br />
pleated edge. Make sure that you<br />
have a non-slip surface and that<br />
the folds are close together.<br />
Trick: pull out a cross thread. This<br />
marks the perfect line and serves<br />
as a guide for a straight cut.<br />
Things to know about pleated fabric<br />
A fold in the pleats consist of a fold width and depth<br />
• Wrinkle width: The part that is visible<br />
from the outside between the folds<br />
• Depth of wrinkles: the inner invisible part<br />
(2 x fold width)<br />

The hem can be sewn with or without an overlocker.<br />
With an overlock machine: Sew the hem around with a<br />
rolled hem.<br />
Without an overlocker: pull the folds apart and fold<br />
them twice. Secure the hem by hand with loose<br />
basting stitches. Then topstitch the hem with<br />
the sewing machine.<br />

For the side seam, cut along one of the the<br />
folded edges. For a perfect end result of<br />
your sewing project, you have to connect<br />
the side seams with a loose basting stitch.<br />
