WHAT IS EVOLVE?<br />
<strong>Evolve</strong> is a small college in the centre<br />
of Ripon. We provide an alternative to<br />
a large campus for full-time students<br />
in a supportive, friendly and inclusive<br />
environment.<br />
You will benefit from large college services<br />
whilst studying in a smaller environment.<br />
We have excellent student support services<br />
(inc. EHCP), NUS cards, counselling,<br />
bursary application and financial support.<br />
<strong>Evolve</strong> tutors and support staff are highly<br />
trained professionals with many years of<br />
experience.<br />
Our aim is to support you to enjoy learning,<br />
expand your knowledge and develop in<br />
confidence whilst achieving your aspirations.<br />
You will learn flexibly both at home and at<br />
college through remote learning. We have<br />
digitised classrooms and will ensure you<br />
have the right tools to engage with us.<br />

HOW WILL YOU STUDY AT<br />
EVOLVE?<br />
Your full-time study programme will be unique.<br />
You will choose a core aim which can be a<br />
qualification or high-quality work experience.<br />
Alongside this, you can study qualifications in:<br />
The Arts, English, Maths and Horticulture.<br />
Your employability, personal and social<br />
development skills will be enhanced by<br />
participating in sessions and community<br />
projects including arts, crafts and music<br />
festivals, educational visits, outdoor events,<br />
theatre trips, art exhibitions and team building<br />
activities.<br />
WHAT IS THE PROGRAMME?<br />
Your full-time study programme will consist of<br />

You can select a Core Aim in Work Experience<br />
or Horticulture which will make up at least two<br />
days of your <strong>Evolve</strong> Study Programme. We will<br />
be increasing our choice of Core Aims in the<br />
future. Please ask for updates about additional<br />
choices.<br />

You will build a portfolio of qualifications,<br />
including English and Maths and The Arts, to<br />
develop your employability and increase your<br />
skills.<br />

Personal and Social Development (PSD) is<br />
designed to incorporate current hot topics<br />
so that you can discuss and enhance your<br />
knowledge of the world whilst gaining tolerance<br />
and respect for others.<br />

We offer a unique rolling curriculum which<br />
is written afresh and delivered by teaching<br />
specialists every three weeks.<br />

SUPPORT<br />
OVERVIEW<br />
We want you to be successful, both during your time at <strong>Evolve</strong> and at anything you decide to do<br />
afterwards. No two students are the same and we understand the importance of valuing people<br />
as individuals and recognise that sometimes there are barriers that may get in the way of people<br />
reaching their potential. The support services within <strong>Evolve</strong> exist to help remove those barriers.<br />
Through our various services, we can provide a network of support to help you get the most out of<br />
your course.<br />
FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR<br />
16–18 YEAR OLDS<br />
Guaranteed Bursary<br />
This allows students to receive a weekly<br />
payment. The bursary is for students who are in<br />
care, a care leaver, or claiming benefits in their<br />
own right.<br />
Discretionary Learner Support Fund<br />
This bursary is available to help with up to<br />
50% of the cost of essential kit, equipment and<br />
uniform. To be eligible for the bursary students<br />
must have a household income of £21,000 or<br />
less.<br />
Care to Learn<br />
Care to Learn is a government scheme offering<br />
childcare support for students who are 19 or<br />
under at the start of their course.<br />
Free School Meals<br />
Students who received free school meals at<br />
school will be able to continue receiving them<br />
at College. We also offer free school meals for<br />
students with a household income of £16,190<br />
or less.<br />

the start of their course and have a household<br />
income of £21,000 or less, Craven College can<br />
offer childcare support (this must be provided<br />
by an Ofsted registered childcare provider).<br />

HORTICULTURE<br />
What is it?<br />
If you have an interest in gardening, nature,<br />
botany, plant cultivation and enjoy working<br />
outdoors you will be well suited to this extremely<br />
practical skills-based course which can lead<br />
to careers in garden maintenance, hard<br />
landscaping and plant nurseries.<br />
This enjoyable and highly successful course<br />
has 100% pass rate every year and students<br />
progress to Apprenticeships, Further Education<br />
at a higher level, Employment and Supported<br />
Employment.<br />
How does it work?<br />
The Diploma is delivered by experienced<br />
horticulturists in a beautiful and well equipped<br />
setting which includes a Portakabin classroom<br />
and poly-tunnels. You will be based at the<br />
external site for two days each week and be<br />
supported by our Horticulture Lecturer and<br />
Progression Support Assistants. Assessment is<br />
ongoing as you build a portfolio of your skills and<br />
experiences.<br />
WORK EXPERIENCE<br />
What is it?<br />
If you are already keen to get a job or don’t know<br />
what you want to do, then a Work Experience<br />
Core Aim may be the best match for you. You<br />
will gain industry-based skills and experiences<br />
and increase your chances of employment. You<br />
can choose either one or two industries; if you<br />
choose two, then you would work one day in<br />
each.<br />
How does it work?<br />
In the first six weeks, we will help you to identify<br />
potential career choices after which you will be<br />
matched to a Work Placement Provider and<br />
your Work Experience will start. All placements<br />
are sourced by us and are high quality, adhering<br />
to Health & Safety and our Code of Conduct.<br />
You will be supported with interview preparation<br />
and once successful, you will receive a Work<br />
Experience Job Description and Student Pack<br />
so that you know what is expected of you.

ENGLISH<br />
GCSE English or Functional Skills English can be<br />
studied. Your choice will depend on your prior<br />
qualifications.<br />
WJEC GCSE English Language is studied as a<br />
one year course at <strong>Evolve</strong>, and you will sit your<br />
exams in the summer at Craven College’s main<br />
site.<br />
Functional Skills English lessons are designed<br />
to be fun and practical, and cover topics<br />
such as: letter writing; spelling, punctuation<br />
and grammar and speaking, listening and<br />
communication. You will sit your exams at the<br />
<strong>Evolve</strong> site.<br />
HORTICULTURE<br />
If you have an interest in: gardening, nature,<br />
botany, plant cultivation and enjoy working<br />
outdoors you will be well suited to one of our<br />
horticulture courses.<br />
You can choose a mini horticulture qualification<br />
or a substantial Diploma in Practical<br />
Horticulture.<br />
This is an extremely practical course delivered<br />
by experienced horticulturists in a beautiful and<br />
well equipped setting.<br />
MATHS<br />
GCSE Maths or Functional Skills Maths can be<br />
studied. Your choice will depend on your prior<br />
qualifications.<br />
AQA GCSE Maths is studied as a one year<br />
course at <strong>Evolve</strong>, and you will sit the exams in<br />
the summer at Craven College’s main site.<br />
Functional Skills Maths lessons will help you to<br />
apply Maths to your everyday life, at the same<br />
time as being fun and engaging. You will sit your<br />
exams at the <strong>Evolve</strong> site.<br />
THE ARTS<br />
We are a centre of excellence for Trinity College<br />
London’s Award in The Arts.<br />
You will select an Art form to study as part<br />
of your qualification from a wide variety of<br />
art forms including: graphic design, printing<br />
and painting, graffiti art, costume design,<br />
sculpture, acting, animation, film making,<br />
lighting, music technology, theatrical makeup,<br />
prop construction, and script writing (and<br />
many more). There are opportunities to attend<br />
a wide array of visits to theatre, art exhibitions,<br />
museums and festivals throughout the course.<br />

Development<br />
Personal and Social Development<br />
incorporates current hot topics so that you<br />
can discuss and enhance your knowledge<br />
of the world whilst gaining tolerance,<br />
understanding and respect for others.<br />
You will be encouraged to voice your opinions<br />
and listen to others in a safe and supportive<br />
environment. The curriculum is created each<br />
month so that relevant topics of interest to a<br />
group of students can be incorporated into the<br />
lessons.<br />
One to one support is given for emotional<br />
well-being and to develop coping strategies<br />
to manage severe emotions and to gain an<br />
understanding of the unpredictable responses<br />
of others around you.<br />
We link to a wide range of different<br />
professionals, specialists and guest speakers<br />
and these inform many of our PSD sessions.<br />
You can select to attend a range of educational<br />
visits that include excursions to places of<br />
interest alongside team-building walks and<br />
activities.<br />
The wrap-round of PSD within your study<br />
programme ensures a holistic approach to your<br />
education and enables you to build a portfolio<br />
of unique experiences in order to succeed in a<br />
range of different formal and informal settings.<br />
During the year you will grow in confidence so<br />
that you can communicate effectively in an<br />
array of settings whilst sharing an ethos of<br />
kindness, respect and tolerance.<br />
