WHAT IS EVOLVE?
Evolve is a small college in the centre
of Ripon. We provide an alternative to
a large campus for full-time students
in a supportive, friendly and inclusive
environment.
You will benefit from large college services
whilst studying in a smaller environment.
We have excellent student support services
(inc. EHCP), NUS cards, counselling,
bursary application and financial support.
Evolve tutors and support staff are highly
trained professionals with many years of
experience.
Our aim is to support you to enjoy learning,
expand your knowledge and develop in
confidence whilst achieving your aspirations.
You will learn flexibly both at home and at
college through remote learning. We have
digitised classrooms and will ensure you
have the right tools to engage with us.

HOW WILL YOU STUDY AT
EVOLVE?
Your full-time study programme will be unique.
You will choose a core aim which can be a
qualification or high-quality work experience.
Alongside this, you can study qualifications in:
The Arts, English, Maths and Horticulture.
Your employability, personal and social
development skills will be enhanced by
participating in sessions and community
projects including arts, crafts and music
festivals, educational visits, outdoor events,
theatre trips, art exhibitions and team building
activities.
WHAT IS THE PROGRAMME?
Your full-time study programme will consist of
the following:

You can select a Core Aim in Work Experience
or Horticulture which will make up at least two
days of your Evolve Study Programme. We will
be increasing our choice of Core Aims in the
future. Please ask for updates about additional
choices.

You will build a portfolio of qualifications,
including English and Maths and The Arts, to
develop your employability and increase your
skills.

Personal and Social Development (PSD) is
designed to incorporate current hot topics
so that you can discuss and enhance your
knowledge of the world whilst gaining tolerance
and respect for others.

We offer a unique rolling curriculum which
is written afresh and delivered by teaching
specialists every three weeks.

SUPPORT
OVERVIEW
We want you to be successful, both during your time at Evolve and at anything you decide to do
afterwards. No two students are the same and we understand the importance of valuing people
as individuals and recognise that sometimes there are barriers that may get in the way of people
reaching their potential. The support services within Evolve exist to help remove those barriers.
Through our various services, we can provide a network of support to help you get the most out of
your course.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR
16–18 YEAR OLDS
Guaranteed Bursary
This allows students to receive a weekly
payment. The bursary is for students who are in
care, a care leaver, or claiming benefits in their
own right.
Discretionary Learner Support Fund
This bursary is available to help with up to
50% of the cost of essential kit, equipment and
uniform. To be eligible for the bursary students
must have a household income of £21,000 or
less.
Care to Learn
Care to Learn is a government scheme offering
childcare support for students who are 19 or
under at the start of their course.
Free School Meals
Students who received free school meals at
school will be able to continue receiving them
at College. We also offer free school meals for
students with a household income of £16,190
or less.

Lunch Vouchers

the start of their course and have a household
income of £21,000 or less, Craven College can
offer childcare support (this must be provided
by an Ofsted registered childcare provider).

CHOOSE YOUR CORE AIM
HORTICULTURE/WORK
EXPERIENCE
AT LEAST TWO DAYS OF
STUDY PROGRAMME
GAIN A QUALIFICATION
HORTICULTURE
What is it?
If you have an interest in gardening, nature,
botany, plant cultivation and enjoy working
outdoors you will be well suited to this extremely
practical skills-based course which can lead
to careers in garden maintenance, hard
landscaping and plant nurseries.
This enjoyable and highly successful course
has 100% pass rate every year and students
progress to Apprenticeships, Further Education
at a higher level, Employment and Supported
Employment.
How does it work?
The Diploma is delivered by experienced
horticulturists in a beautiful and well equipped
setting which includes a Portakabin classroom
and poly-tunnels. You will be based at the
external site for two days each week and be
supported by our Horticulture Lecturer and
Progression Support Assistants. Assessment is
ongoing as you build a portfolio of your skills and
experiences.
WORK EXPERIENCE
What is it?
If you are already keen to get a job or don’t know
what you want to do, then a Work Experience
Core Aim may be the best match for you. You
will gain industry-based skills and experiences
and increase your chances of employment. You
can choose either one or two industries; if you
choose two, then you would work one day in
each.
How does it work?
In the first six weeks, we will help you to identify
potential career choices after which you will be
matched to a Work Placement Provider and
your Work Experience will start. All placements
are sourced by us and are high quality, adhering
to Health & Safety and our Code of Conduct.
You will be supported with interview preparation
and once successful, you will receive a Work
Experience Job Description and Student Pack
so that you know what is expected of you.

Qualifications

TAUGHT IN SMALL &

MEET YOUR INDIVIDUAL
NEEDS
ENGLISH
GCSE English or Functional Skills English can be
studied. Your choice will depend on your prior
qualifications.
WJEC GCSE English Language is studied as a
one year course at Evolve, and you will sit your
exams in the summer at Craven College’s main
site.
Functional Skills English lessons are designed
to be fun and practical, and cover topics
such as: letter writing; spelling, punctuation
and grammar and speaking, listening and
communication. You will sit your exams at the
Evolve site.
HORTICULTURE
If you have an interest in: gardening, nature,
botany, plant cultivation and enjoy working
outdoors you will be well suited to one of our
horticulture courses.
You can choose a mini horticulture qualification
or a substantial Diploma in Practical
Horticulture.
This is an extremely practical course delivered
by experienced horticulturists in a beautiful and
well equipped setting.
MATHS
GCSE Maths or Functional Skills Maths can be
studied. Your choice will depend on your prior
qualifications.
AQA GCSE Maths is studied as a one year
course at Evolve, and you will sit the exams in
the summer at Craven College’s main site.
Functional Skills Maths lessons will help you to
apply Maths to your everyday life, at the same
time as being fun and engaging. You will sit your
exams at the Evolve site.
THE ARTS
We are a centre of excellence for Trinity College
London’s Award in The Arts.
You will select an Art form to study as part
of your qualification from a wide variety of
art forms including: graphic design, printing
and painting, graffiti art, costume design,
sculpture, acting, animation, film making,
lighting, music technology, theatrical makeup,
prop construction, and script writing (and
many more). There are opportunities to attend
a wide array of visits to theatre, art exhibitions,
museums and festivals throughout the course.

Development
Personal and Social Development
incorporates current hot topics so that you
can discuss and enhance your knowledge
of the world whilst gaining tolerance,
understanding and respect for others.
You will be encouraged to voice your opinions
and listen to others in a safe and supportive
environment. The curriculum is created each
month so that relevant topics of interest to a
group of students can be incorporated into the
lessons.
One to one support is given for emotional
well-being and to develop coping strategies
to manage severe emotions and to gain an
understanding of the unpredictable responses
of others around you.
We link to a wide range of different
professionals, specialists and guest speakers
and these inform many of our PSD sessions.
You can select to attend a range of educational
visits that include excursions to places of
interest alongside team-building walks and
activities.
The wrap-round of PSD within your study
programme ensures a holistic approach to your
education and enables you to build a portfolio
of unique experiences in order to succeed in a
range of different formal and informal settings.
During the year you will grow in confidence so
that you can communicate effectively in an
array of settings whilst sharing an ethos of
kindness, respect and tolerance.

We offer a unique rolling curriculum

Our bespoke system ensures that you gain the
support and development strategies that you
need in order to succeed.
We speak to all students, members of staff
(teachers, support staff and business support)
and Work Experience Providers.
This 360 degree feedback system allows us to
create relevant topics for Employability Skills
sessions.
If a Work Experience Provider requires you
to develop a specific skill we can address this
within your sessions and everyone benefits!
Employability Skills sessions allow you to grow in
confidence and independence in order to stand
out from the crowd and gain a worthwhile,
sustained career.
