REBUILDING
RESOURCING
RESHAPING
Recommitting to being ALL IN for 2021.
ALL
IN.
At KXC we believe you get the most out of
family life by giving the most to it. We are
seeing the fruit of this and really want to
go after it as a church. The stories you’re
about to read belong to a community
that’s committed to being ALL IN and a
God who is always faithful. We don’t have
a membership and don’t define who’s in
and who’s out, but we encourage everyone
who calls KXC home to do four things.
COME
The Sunday gathering is the moment where we
gather together to celebrate the goodness of
God, open up the Scriptures, and pray for God’s
empowering presence to fall upon us. It’s really
tough to develop meaningful community through
sporadic attendance and so we want to encourage
everyone to come regularly on a Sunday whether
that’s in person or online.
BELONG
In a city where it’s so easy to feel isolated,
we want KXC to be a place that everyone can
find home. Key to this are our smaller mid-week
communities – Hubs and Pattern Groups – which
enable people to get to know one another and
explore practising the way of Jesus together.
To sign up and find out more, head to our website.
SERVE
Serving is an incredible way to build community
within the church, and an incredible way to
transform community beyond the church. As well as
encouraging people to serve on Sunday teams, we’d
equally love for everyone to find a place to regularly
serve in one of our local mission projects, particularly
during the current season with growing needs and
opportunities all around us.
GIVE
Jesus said where your treasure is there your heart
will be also and so we’d love everyone to give
financially as we believe that investing your finance
means investing your heart. Just think of a church
community where everyone’s heart is fully backing
the vision to recklessly give ourselves to God, each
other and the people of King’s Cross and beyond.
A HOPEFUL REBUILDING
It’s no exaggeration to say that this has been one
of the most challenging seasons of our lives and an
incredibly tough time to be the Church. And yet there
is so much to celebrate. God said He would establish
His kingdom in our midst and He’s been unbelievably
faithful, graciously choosing to use us at our weakest
to build His kingdom. As the needs around us have
grown, we’ve seen people selflessly step up to play
their part - on Sunday teams, in Hub leadership,
and through a whole host of missional activities
and compassion ministries. We’ve embraced the
entrepreneurial spirit of those finding creative ways
to tackle some of the social problems of our age,
and to serve the community of King’s Cross and
beyond. The stories of poverty relief, family and youth
support, and the pursuit of justice and reconciliation
in a time of fragmentation, are astonishing.
So as we continue to navigate this ‘new normal’
together, we are overwhelmed with gratitude for all
the prayers that have been answered. But we know
that many of the needs we see around us are more
likely to increase than decrease. We also know that
there is no end to the compassion and resources of
the kingdom. Full of faith, we want to wholeheartedly
partner with God in this next chapter, as we
encourage everyone to be ALL IN. As tempting as it
might feel to retreat into self preservation, we believe
that God is inviting each of us into radical generosity.
This isn’t a time to spectate from the sidelines but to
step forward and contend for the most vulnerable,
confident that He will provide. Looking to the future
with hope, our preparations for rebuilding will have
this call from Isaiah 61 at their foundation: We are
anointed by the Spirit “to proclaim good news to the
poor, to bind up the brokenhearted, and to set the
captives free”. Now more than ever.
Much love, Pete & Bee
LOOKING BACK WITH GRATITUDE
Despite this hard season, God has been doing amazing things in and through KXC. It’s extraordinary to see
the church embody our vision of serving God’s purpose to make all things new by recklessly giving ourselves
away to God, each other, and the people of King’s Cross and beyond.
SUNDAYS
A rapid reimagining of Sundays birthed both virtual
gatherings (through which we estimate we’ve
reached 1,800 weekly viewers with the love and
hope of Jesus, many of whom had never engaged
with KXC before) and 4 COVID secure services per
Sunday at the iconic Scala venue (with full kids work)
where it was brilliant to see the church come back
together while gathering was possible. A huge thank
you to everyone who served on a team to make all
of this happen!
HUBS
Hubs have met via Zoom week in, week out, with
nearly 500 people finding new ways to be family
to each other in more than 40 groups. With the
vision of meeting virtually and serving locally, Hubs
have stepped up to bless and support their local
communities in all sorts of incredible ways, led by
over 100 Hub leaders.

MIDWEEK RESOURCES
We were excited to launch the brand new Midweek
Edition: a short online service of worship, devotionals
and inspiring interviews. Following on from the work
of the Race Equality Core Team around diversity, we’ve
begun an important series of Conversations on Race.
This has included interviews with some of
the leading Black theologians in the country and
across the world as we look to stand against the
systemic racism present in society.
KX CARE FUND
The KX Care Fund exists so that we can participate
together in meeting the needs of those who have been
financially affected during the COVID-19 pandemic.
As a congregation, we gave in the region of £16,000,
and so far have been able to offer support to nearly 30
individuals. On behalf of the independent panel who
receive and make decisions on the applications, it has
been a beautiful thing to see the church give to one
another in this way. We are still open for applications if
you (or someone you know within the KXC community)
are unable to work, have been made unemployed, or
are waiting for your Universal Credit to come in. Please
do apply at kxc.org.uk/carefund
THE KINGDOM HAS ALSO
BEEN BREAKING OUT BEYOND
THE WALLS OF THE CHURCH,
AS MISSION BIRTHED IN OUR
CONGREGATION HAS BROUGHT
LIFE RIGHT ACROSS THE CITY.
KXC FOODBANK
Since the beginning of April the KXC Foodbank has
been able to serve the needs of our community
in Islington with over 150 households receiving
food parcels. Our delivery team has completed 817
deliveries. Our referral team has made around 880
phone calls and our on site team has made over
1500 parcels. Thank you, volunteers!
BANKUET
Founded by Robin Ferris, Bankuet is an innovative
online platform turning donations into the supplies
that foodbanks need most. At the end of 2019
Bankuet was supporting 10 foodbanks but by March,
as the pandemic struck, donations were up 5000%
month-on-month. In the first 2 months of lockdown,
Bankuet shipped 133,000 items, feeding over 5,000
people. In response to the increasing need, the team
has continued to grow and now supports over 100
foodbanks across the UK and Ireland, including the
KXC Foodbank. Bankuet has also been nominated
twice in The Spectator’s Economic Innovator of the
Year Awards 2020.
HUB PARTNERSHIPS
Hubs stepped up to meet vital needs among our
various ministries, looking out for people isolating or
shielding, particularly Choices Islington clients and
KX Brunch guests. One example: A Hub shopped
for essential food items and delivered these to the
doorstep of a Choices mother and her baby son who
had contracted Coronavirus. The mother said:
”It means a lot to know that people care about me
and the baby during this testing time.”
GROWING HOPE
Growing Hope has thrived over the past 12 months.
The clinic has continued to see families over
lockdown, several of whom have expressed an
interest in coming to church. Two new therapists
have been recruited, and support groups continue
to run for parents and siblings of children with
additional needs. Growing Hope has also opened a
new clinic in Brockley.
PRISON
There are still no groups or visitors allowed inside
HMP Pentonville, so our prison ministry team has
not been able to serve as usual on Sundays and
Wednesdays. However those who are keyholders
have been able to continue providing pastoral
support inside. We’ve also created mini church
services for the prison TVs using KXC online footage,
and we’ve had prison leavers join our community
online and at Scala. As reported in the Islington
Gazette, prisoners and staff at HMP Pentonville
came together to donate to the KXC Foodbank over
lockdown, which was a truly remarkable moment.
CRUX
In June 2020, Philip & Sarah Guthrie launched a
reconciliation, mediation and conflict skills ministry
which couldn’t have been more timely as it offers
positive peace at a moment of deep division and
unrest.
COSTS
Our costs have reduced significantly
over lockdown, due to the obvious
reduction in the expense of gathering,
and our inability to hold the Weekend
Away or go to Wildfires as a church
family. As you can see, our spending
has been heavily weighted towards
mission.

GIVING
It’s been phenomenal to see the financial generosity
of the congregation in a period of such anxiety
and insecurity worldwide. Thank you for choosing
reckless generosity in a climate that could have
produced the opposite. There has in fact been a
marked increase in the number of people giving over
the past few months. On average around 50 more
people give to KXC each month than in October
2019! All of this increase has happened since
lockdown began in March 2020.
You can see here the income figures and numbers of
givers between 1st September 2019 and 31st October
2020. It is nothing short of a miracle that even in the
face of recession, unemployment and uncertainty,
giving went up and we were able to minister to
the most vulnerable at a time when help was so
desperately needed. It’s been deeply moving to see.

LOOKING FORWARD
WITH FAITH
As we turn the corner and look ahead to 2021,
there are three major opportunities which we
believe will define the future of KXC:
REBUILDING
a centre of worship, community and mission in the
heart of King’s Cross
RESOURCING
ongoing mission and growth through new
appointments to the team
RESHAPING
our Sunday gatherings – taking a new shape for a
new season
REBUILDING
CREATING A CENTRE OF MISSION
IN THE HEART OF KING’S CROSS
We have recently had an offer accepted for a 10 year
lease of the building at 242 Pentonville Road. It was
built in 1923 as the Luciana Temperance Billiard Hall
with a shop underneath. Since then, the building has
had a range of different uses, from a bicycle store
to an office for the NHS Computer Unit, and more
recently it has housed the Poor School (an acting
school) and the Pauline Quirke Academy offering
children’s drama lessons.
Now, we want to invest in transforming it into a
mission base, to finally provide a shared home to
some of the great projects and partnerships that God
has grown from within our church, and to facilitate
the new things He has in store for the years ahead.
Its original name Luciana means ‘light’ and we believe
there’s destiny hidden in that history! We are calling
this mission centre King’s House and fully intend it to
shine as a beacon of hope, sharing the light and life
of God with the people of King’s Cross and beyond.
OUR VISION FOR KING’S
HOUSE IS TO OPEN A
CENTRE OF WORSHIP,
COMMUNITY AND
MISSION, RIGHT IN
THE HEART OF KING’S
CROSS.
We want to create an accessible space that follows the example set by Jesus
Christ where people from all walks of life come together and those who are
marginalised and neglected in our society are given priority.
We want to foster an environment where the diversity of King’s Cross can be
embraced and celebrated; where hope and unity shine brightly.
We want King’s House to be a place where hospitality, generosity, practical
support and empowerment are experienced by everyone who comes through
the door, where innovation can be cultivated and can contribute towards a
thriving local area.
We want to build on our partnerships with local charities to help tackle some
of the drivers of poverty that exist in King’s Cross, and to be a place where
those who are overlooked in our city can encounter the love and hope of Jesus
in action.
Ultimately, we want King’s House to contribute to the ongoing social, spiritual
and physical transformation of King’s Cross. Particularly in the context of the year
we’re living through, we see this as a manifestation of the message in Nehemiah
- we are rebuilding altars in the midst of devastation, rebuilding a dwelling
place for the presence of God, and rebuilding the city.

Appendix 1 - Congregational growth
“The potential for some of our prisons and
resettlement work to operate in this building really
excites me. A few years ago we set up a discipleship
group in prison, and it worked so well that we want
to mirror it on the outside and in community - for
those who have left prison and want to continue
meeting together and discipling one another. So
often for those in prison, the journey of faith and selfdiscovery
that you start on the inside is really hard to
continue on the outside. Having a space to do that
in - through-the-gate, holistic discipleship in Jesus -
that is ALSO the place where additional support and
empowerment is found via other projects, AND is the
same place again for church on a Sunday? That is
the absolute dream.”
KARIS CARSON
Local Mission and Prison Ministry
“King’s House would be instrumental for evangelism
because it would act as a dedicated launchpad
for sharing our faith. It would be a visible sign of
our church community, a landmark for us to point
people to while out on the streets, particularly
during Prayer on the Streets. It would provide
space for training and equipping in evangelism,
and host the opportunity for those we serve in the
community to meet Jesus, who drives our local
mission. This would make the Christian roots and
basis for our community action even clearer to those
we engage with, and be a compelling invitation to
them to consider who Jesus is and why he makes
a difference - to us in our worship, and through us
in the work that we do. It would provide us with
space to host Alpha right within a central hub for our
church family. There would be many opportunities
to invite people to see more of who we are as a
community and provide concrete representation of
the fact that faith in Jesus is shown in both beliefs
and in actions.”
“Through being in this building as Growing Hope we
would see children and young people with additional
needs and their families having the opportunity
to experience Hope. Hope for children through
receiving occupational therapy, physio, speech and
language, music therapy and counselling under
one roof. Hope for families through running groups
for siblings and parents to connect and process
their experience and through connecting with
other charities like Choices. Hope in Jesus through
having the opportunity to pray in their sessions, and
to be invited back to the building if we were able
to run church or events here as well as through
the opportunity to be in a space with others in the
church community. Welcoming individuals who have
disabilities and high levels of needs through Growing
Hope will speak into the story that this building
and God’s kingdom is counter-intuitive to what the
world says - it’s a place where everyone is welcome
whatever their needs and I’m excited to see that
embodied here.”

BUILDING COSTS
UP FRONT
We are anticipating completing some building work to
create the spaces that we need within King’s House,
and to ensure it is fitted out for the range of uses we
would love to see established.
Significant areas of work include:
• Improving accessibility and circulation, most likely
by installing a platform lift
• Soundproofing, ventilation and cooling to create
an auditorium
• Internal layout changes
• Possible repairs to rainwater goods
• Repair of existing floors
• Mechanical and electrical works
We are currently developing this into a fully-fledged
design scheme, but at present we estimate the total
costs to be around £280,000. Some of this will be
met by the existing Building Fund with a balance of
around £80,000.

RESOURCING
ONGOING MISSION AND GROWTH
Over lockdown, we’ve seen enormous growth in significant areas of church life. We want to resource the
church for this continued growth by investing in people. So we’re looking to recruit to these new roles as we
build on what’s already begun. We estimate the total costs of the roles to be around £25,000 p.a.
MEDIA AND PRODUCTION
(2 DAYS/WEEK)
Over the past six months, we have worked hard
developing online services, and making sure
that every event and ministry is able to operate
effectively remotely. And we’re so encouraged by
the stories of our services reaching the homes of
people we’ve never met before! We believe that this
task will continue to grow in the years ahead, and
so want to properly resource our Sunday Production
teams and Communications team to enable us to
bring the gospel to as many people as possible.
YOUTH (1 DAY/WEEK)
We are excited to see a growing number of young
people at the church, and want to create an
environment where we can continue to nurture them
in their faith, helping them to become confident,
courageous and creative people, supported in
their mental health and spiritual development, and
equipped to bring transformation to their schools,
families, and local area.
OPERATIONS (2 DAYS/WEEK)
As we look to relaunch Sunday services there is
a need to grow the central team – the engine
room that supports so much of the life of the
church, looking after teams, ensuring equipment
and facilities are well managed, and that projects
are properly resourced.
RESHAPING
A NEW SHAPE FOR A NEW SEASON
Even in the midst of the enormous challenges of 2020, we’ve seen God at work to make all things new
across our community, as we’ve continued to worship, pray, learn and to serve one another.
One of the opportunities COVID brought was the
exploration of how we could best structure Sunday
services. We recognise the importance of meeting
in person for our faith, but we also know that we
will have to change shape in order to do that, given
ongoing restrictions to travel and the limitations of
the spaces available. With the emergence of the
‘village’ in many people’s experiences of London, we
want to resource this over the coming season by
creating temporary opportunities for meeting more
locally; smaller ‘satellite’ congregations in addition
to the central King’s Cross gatherings, where people
can engage with the online services alongside others
who live nearby. This will also increase our capacity
to welcome new people to the church – particularly
those who’ve never been to church before – while
larger gatherings aren’t possible.
These satellite gatherings will require an estimated
£25,000 to cover:
• Additional venue hire costs
• Equipment and technology
• Coordinating resources and teams
• Training and developing leaders

WHAT NEXT
HOW TO GIVE
As we prepare to step into this new season, let’s
come together to pray for all that God will do in
and through the church in the coming months
and years. We also invite you to join a group of us
in fasting on Thursdays as we seek the Lord for
His provision and His wisdom in the process of
rebuilding, resourcing and reshaping. And finally, we
encourage you to embrace radical generosity and
to give, to join in with God’s redemptive plan to make
all things new in King’s Cross. In short, now is the
time to be ALL IN.
