Finding the right course for you
College is more than just a course, it’s your next step to success! Whether you’re an
aspiring graphic designer, care assistant, tree surgeon or personal trainer to name
a few careers, Shipley College can help you get there! We understand that everyone
learns differently, so to help you decide what’s right for you, read on...
BTEC Study Programme
Do you have a specific career in mind?
Choosing a BTEC or NCFE course gives you the
chance to tailor your education to follow your
passion. You focus your attention on that one
area, gaining hands-on experience in the subject
that interests you the most. These courses take a
practical approach to studying, with a combination
of coursework and assessed units. A BTEC or
NCFE course can open doors to university, an
apprenticeship or the first step in your chosen career.
What you need to know:
• Full-time BTEC students study approximately
16 hours a week. Normally this is at our campus
in Saltaire, however, due to the pandemic, some
teaching is taking place online.
• You will have the opportunity to gain experience of
work both at the College and through external
work placements.
• Level 3 BTEC grades are equivalent up to 3 A
Levels, which means you can earn UCAS points
which support entry to university.
Are you ready to study the next level qualification?
We are delighted to be one of the first colleges in the
country to be offering new T Levels. These 2-year
technical qualifications are demanding, but will help
launch your career working with employers from the
start of the course.
What you need to know:
• T Levels are new 2-year high quality technical
qualifications.
• You spend 45-60 days on an industry placement,
giving you the skills employers in these industries
value & need.
• 80% of this course is classroom based and 20% is
practical learning on industry placement.
• T Levels are equivalent up to 3 A Levels, which
means you can earn UCAS points to support entry
to university.
We are offering 5 Level 3 T Levels and one Level 2
Transition T Level this year. Please see pages
20 & 21 for more information.
Apprenticeships
Would you like to earn while you learn?
As an apprentice, you will be employed in a real job
while gaining valuable skills and knowledge in a
specific job role. This means you have the opportunity
of starting your career working in your chosen area
and gaining the skills, knowledge and behaviours
which employers look for. Your training will be a
blend of learning in the workplace, formal off-the-job
training and the opportunity to practise new skills in
a real work environment.
What you need to know:
• Anyone aged 16+ can apply for an apprenticeship.
• You will be employed and paid directly by a
company while studying for your qualification.
• Most apprentices will be in work for four days plus
one day at College each week.
• Your apprenticeship can take between one and
two years to complete.
• The minimum salary is currently £4.15 per hour
changing to £4.30 in April 2021, however, many
employers pay significantly more.
• A Level 3 Apprenticeship is equivalent to 2-3 A
Levels which can lead to, or be an alternative to,
university.
Traineeships
An alternative route to employment
Are you 16-24 but still not sure what is right for you?
We know it is not always easy to find the right role
for you, especially when you have little or no work
experience and few qualifications. Traineeships help
bridge the gap between the skills that you have and
those that employers need.
Still not sure?
Think about what subjects you enjoy, your
interests or what inspires you. Where would
you like college to take you - a job or university?
Talk to careers advisors, friends and family too.
A FEW HIGHLIGHTS
FROM THE
YEAR
Travel
& Tourism students
Christmas Appeal
Travel & Tourism students organised a Christmas
Appeal to help two charities. The Yorkshire Children’s Trust
benefitted from toys & books which for children aged 4-10
who were spending Christmas in hospitals across Yorkshire.
Toiletries and food items were given to the Trussell Food Bank for
distribution to those in need at Christmas.
“Yorkshire Children’s Trust is a small children’s charity supporting children
all across the Yorkshire region. Every Christmas, we visit the local hospitals
to donate gifts for all the children on the wards long term. We couldn’t
do this without the help and support of the Travel & Tourism team
at Shipley College who have gone above and beyond to donate
some stunning gifts to our appeal. We remain very appreciative
for the continued support of the students who have a strong
understanding on the importance of charity giving and how
much of a difference their support makes to some of
the most vulnerable children in our community.”
Simon Widdop, Charity Founder &
Trustee
Students contribute 2704
volunteer hours to the
local community
We are delighted to have received a Social Impact Certificate
from the Duke of Edinburgh Award Charity in recognition of
the contributions that our students have made within our local
community.
Over the last year, over 200 of our students have been involved in
volunteering as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver
Awards. This has included Youth Work, supporting students and
adults with Learning Difficulties, working in nursing homes and
charities, helping to promote, fundraise and support local food
banks, providing support for after school clubs, scouts and
brownies, coaching local junior sports teams, running charity
fundraising and awareness events and running enrichment
activities for the students at the college. All of this
work amounted to an amazing 2704 hours with
a social value of £11,762 for our local
community.
College
staff support local NHS
& Care Workers
Staff from College have been working hard to support
our local NHS and care workers by creating urgently
needed face masks and scrubs for medical and care staff
during the pandemic. Steve Mullarkey, our Computing tutor, has
been 3D printing face shields for frontline staff. They have faced
challenges along the way but have been running the printer all day
to make as many as possible.
Steve says: “Our NHS staff work so hard and are so dedicated every
day, but it has taken this crisis to highlight what heroes each and every
one of them are, many of whom are essential to the functioning of the
NHS. If we can help in such a small way, by producing equipment
to protect them, there is no question as to whether this is
something worth doing.’”
In
addition, we have
also partnered with
Scrubs 4 BRI, an amazing
group of volunteers working to
sew scrubs for medical and care
staff in the Bradford District. We
have provided them with much
needed large format patterns so
that they can begin cutting
fabric for their sewing
bundles.
World
Book Night Competition
2020
Our College Learning Resource Centre Team is
always keen to promote the benefits of reading and
writing and launched a World Book Night Competition
for staff and students. This gave everyone the chance to
share what they were reading and to even compose a written
piece themselves. This latter challenge was to either write
500 words for the first part of a story or to write a poem about
their thoughts and feelings during lockdown.
The entries received demonstrated the imaginative talents
of our students who were clearly keeping their minds
creative! Sophie was the winner with her lockdown
poem called ‘20/20 Vision’, Furheen and James
The
were the two runners up.
Level 3 Travel and
Well done to everyone who took part!
Tourism Project Group
has started some collaborative
volunteering work with Sonja
Kielty, the Volunteer Coordinator from
Bradford‘s Libraries, Museums and
Galleries. This is a great opportunity
for them to get involved with a local
project. They are looking at gardening
volunteering opportunities at the
Bradford Industrial Museum
and the grounds of Bolling
Hall Museum.
16
First
Give Cinderella Success
Well done to all of our students who took part
in the first ever First Give virtual final, after weeks
of preparations, fundraising and volunteering.
Huge congratulations to the winning team who received
the £1000 prize money for the Bradford Cinderella Club. Our
Level 3 Health & Social Care students raised awareness of the
amazing work this charity does for local underprivileged children.
They also improved the charity’s social media profile in order to
share their story with a wider audience and generate vital funds
and support.
Thank you to everyone who gave their time and talent
to support their chosen charity and to the charities
themselves for the vital work they do. The shared
experience has been positive for all parties.

former student
Former Travel & Tourism student
Natalia, featured in the image below,
has been in touch with her College tutor
to let her know how well she is getting
on at university. It has been great
to receive such a positive message
and hear how she is settling into her
first year at Leeds Beckett University,
studying Travel & Hospitality
Management.
‘Uni is going great, loving university life.
I think it’s the best decision I made, but
you actually pushed me towards it, so
thank you so much.
Since I was a little girl, I always imagined
myself sitting in a lecture, but when I
was in high school I didn’t think that was
possible. You’re the one that made it
possible for me, thank you so much!! I’m
Partnership
We have been working in partnership with Guiseley
AFC since 2013, giving talented young footballers the
opportunity to combine high levels of coaching five
days a week, alongside continued academic study.
The benefits gained mean some students have
been accepted as ‘High Achievers’ at university.
Recruitment for the football academy has gone
from strength to strength and the collaboration
has proven valuable to the club and the players.
Last year, we had another fantastic season with our U19 Academy
team challenging for the league title before the season’s premature
end. The Shipley College Development side gave players the
platform to advance to higher levels and compete in regional
competition. This was a continuation of the good work of all
the coaching staff and students involved. The players worked
tirelessly all season, training four times a week with some students
committing to travelling long distances to be a part of the team.
‘I’m grateful to be given this opportunity.
Apprenticeships are a great way to put
what you learn at college into practice
in a work situation and to gain from the
expertise of the team. I’m really excited
to be working at Tong.’
Neil Barwise-Carr,
Head of People and Culture at
Tong Garden Centre, Bradford
‘We were conscious that we needed
people in our Plants team who are
excited and passionate about working
with plants, so we thought what better
than to bring in someone who is eager
and enthusiastic about learning, not just
from college, but from those around
them? We’ve noticed, in just a few days,
that the rest of the team are enthused
by having an apprentice on board, who
they can help coach and mentor along
the way. Hopefully this will pave the way
for more apprentices in other areas of
the business.’
“‘I really enjoyed the college as
the staff were very supportive
in difficult times during work
and always told me to try my
best. I would recommend this
college to others as the staff are
very supportive towards their
students and take the time to
listen to us privately and help us
to achieve. I am now a full time
TA in a primary school.’
