Sundawn Integrated Services Presents 12th Annual Golf Classic!
On Monday July 9th,
Sundawn Integrated
Services proudly presented a
fabulous day of golf, food and
fundraising for our local
community hospital. For the
eighth year in a row, the
tournament sold out well in
advance with 190 participants
hitting the greens at the
St. Catharines Golf & Country
Club. After expenses, a grand
total of $60,000 was raised
toward the purchase of urgent
patient equipment for the
St. Catharines General site of
the NHS.
For the fourth year Sundawn
Integrated Services, a national
leader in the heating and air
conditioning service industry
for 50 years, showed
enormous support for The St.
Catharines General Hospital
Foundation when it accepted
the important role of
Presenting Sponsor. In 2004,
Sundawn contributed $75,000
over three years in support of
“Scanning the Future”, one of
The Foundation’s most
successful campaigns, which
raised $600,000 to purchase
ultrasound units for the St.
Catharines General. This year,
Sundawn continued their
support by pledging $125,000
to our Foundation.

RUN FOR THE GENERAL
Many exciting transformations in 2007!
As part of an 8 year tradition in our community, The St.
Catharines General Hospital Foundation planning
committee has organized another highly successful Run for the
General. This year’s event enjoyed many exciting changes
including a new location, Club Roma in St. Catharines.
Over 400 people participated in four events that took place from
April 29th to May 6th. This included the "Spin for the General"
at The Club at White Oaks on April 29th; the "Spin for Paeds"
on the grounds of White Oaks on April 30th; the "Stroll for the
General" at Montebello Park on May 6th; and the "Run/Walk for
the General" at Club Roma on May 6th.
This year the Children’s Activity Centre at White Oaks organized
a Spin for Paediatrics for children ages 6 months to 6 years. This

determined group of young philanthropists raised an impressive
$1,200! Children enjoyed a lovely spin on the pathway through
the White Oaks Gardens on bikes, trikes, pedal cars and strollers.
Participants were entered in a draw to win a tricycle,
compliments of Canadian Tire-Louth Street.
The 1K Kids Fun Run was a bright addition to the Run for the
General. Children 14 and under put their best foot forward in
the Run/Walk, while raising pledges for a great cause!
We are delighted to announce that $64,812 was raised for ICU,
Mental Health, C4 East, Paediatric & Orthopaedic Units of the
SCG. The 'Run for the General' is one of our most successful
fundraisers. In just 8 years, over $226,543 has been raised
toward the urgent equipment needs of our hospital.
SPINNING FOR THE CAUSE STROLL FOR ORTHOPAEDIC CARE
“Spin for the General” participants enjoyed a fulfilling
morning of fundraising and exercise in The Club at
White Oaks’ Spinning Studio. Almost $6,000 in pledges
was raised by this dedicated group, who chose to spin
for 1-3 hours. Thank you Vittoria Wikston, Spin
Instructor and Vice President of Sales & Marketing at
White Oaks for leading our spinners to victory!
Friends of the Orthopaedic Department were "On the
Move" at Montebello Park on Sunday, May 6th. $11,250
was raised from the stroll in support of the Orthopaedic
Department at the SCGH. Participants enjoyed a lovely
afternoon of music, refreshments and prizes.
A ‘FABULOUS’ DONATION TO MENTAL HEALTH
To kick off this year's fundraising campaign, the Fabulous at 50 committee team organized an extremely successful
Holiday House Tour of Distinctive Homes in Wine Country that featured six homes in beautiful Jordan raising
$24,000. Over 350 ladies attended the 2nd Annual Speakers Series in January which raised over $3,000.
For the second year, Fabulous at 50 women from all over the Niagara Region came out on race day to support the
urgent equipment needs of the Mental Health Department. This enthusiastic group raised over $17,000 for a
state-of-the-art Snoezelen Room for adults suffering with mental health issues and an ECG Monitor for the
Intensive Care Unit.
The Snoezelen Room is a non-threatening environment with a focus on leisure and relaxation. Whether used for
therapeutic gain, motivation, encouragement, pain reduction, anger management, stress relief, or simply for
recreational pleasure and relaxation, Snoezelen Rooms effect lasting change in mood, behavior, and relationships.
We are truly grateful to our Fabulous at 50 group for their efforts in making this state-of-the-art facility a reality.

Coins for Kids
$69,000 since 1990
“In some odd karmic fashion, all of the medical instruments that our school
has helped purchase through our donations for "Coins for Kids", have been
used to assist my own children whenever they have gone to the General
Hospital for medical attention". Just as the hospital is thankful for our
contributions, the participants are equally grateful for the General
Hospital's fundraising initiatives such as ‘Coins for Kids’.

Kids all over Niagara will benefit from the fundraising efforts of the staff and
students from Glen Ridge, Connaught, Edith Cavell, Parnell, Richmond Street,
Ferndale and Monsignor Clancy Public Schools, who donated over $2,827
toward the purchase of a Phototherapy Light for the Paediatric Department.
Once again our friends at McBoyco Ltd. generously donated lunch certificates to
each student at Glen Ridge Public School, our top-fundraising school for the third
consecutive year. Representatives from Glen Ridge are pictured above with John
Hunt, Coins for Kids Chair, John Veeneman, SCGH Foundation Board of Directors,
Jennifer Hansen, Manager ICU and Heather Gallagher, Clinical Manager of
Maternal/Child.
During the appreciation ceremony, each of the winning schools donated their
cash incentive prizes back to our Foundation - a surprising and much appreciated
gesture. It is clear that our young philanthropists truly understand the concept
of giving back to our community.

who have continued to support Coins for Kids for over 8 years. John's
involvement has been an invaluable asset to this program and to our young
patients.

Heart Function Clinic
Open House
May marked a new beginning for patients living with heart failure
in the Niagara Region. The Jesse E. Hecker Heart Function Clinic
is unique because it focuses on outpatient treatment and monitoring
patients with heart failure. Using a team approach, patients are closely
monitored with a goal of improving quality of life and preventing
hospital admission.
The Heart Function Clinic is dedicated to the memory of Jesse E.
Hecker, a life long resident of St. Catharines who was committed to
improving healthcare. We are truly grateful to Jesse and his daughter
Betty for making this cardiac care centre become a reality. Thank you
to AstraZeneca Medtronic, and Pfizer for sponsoring the Open House.

Stokes Seeds of Change
Each year, the Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Treatment Centre
organizes the "Seeds of Change" campaign, where flower seeds
are distributed throughout the community to raise public awareness
and understanding about sexual violence. This year Stokes Seeds
generously donated over 500 flower seeds and packets which were
distributed in our community. Thank you for your support of this
important cause!
Mattern-Turpin Shines
A ‘Light’ for Paeds
T he Mattern-Turpin Group at RBC Dominion Securities were
thrilled to present long-time clients, friends and business
partners with a gift that truly makes a difference. In lieu of
Christmas gifts, the Mattern-Turpin group purchased Phototherapy
Lights for the Special Care Nursery. Phototherapy lights are used to
treat newborns diagnosed with jaundice.
The new phototherapy light treats newborn babies much faster
than the older models. A quicker recovery, makes baby and

Demonstrate exemplary support of the OR
We would like to express our sincere appreciation to the staff at
Canadian Tire Associate Stores of St. Catharines for their participation
and support of the 2006 Tree of Lights Campaign. Canadian Tire has
sponsored this event since 1992 and we are truly grateful for your
generosity and commitment to our Foundation.
The 2006 Tree of Lights and Christmas Appeal Campaign was our most
successful year to date, raising $118,521! This year funds purchased
important pieces of equipment for our surgeons including tonsil
instrumentation sets, laparoscopic sets and tools, and a liver retractor for
the Operating Room at our hospital.

Home Run for Oncology
Jeannette Giammarco Memorial Tournament
In May, the 2nd Annual Jeannette Giammarco Memorial Charity
Tournament held at the Fonthill Lions Field raised $2,000 toward the
purchase of an Ice Machine for the Outpatient Oncology Department.
Friends and family were happy to honour Jeannette’s memory by
participating in the tournament, which would have marked her 59th
birthday.

Happy Anniversary Hands of Hope!
April 24th marked the 26th Anniversary for the Hands of Hope
group, who have weekly meetings at the St. Catharines General
site. Hands of Hope have donated over $2,400 to The Foundation
for the urgent equipment needs of our hospital.

Open House
Once again, our friends at Gary Waters Ltd. hosted a very successful
Ladies Christmas Shopping Open House. Proceeds totalling $2,000
were directed toward the Evangelista/Adams Centre for Breast Screening.

$2,100 from the staff’s 2006 Dress Down Days. Proceeds will be directed
toward the new Regional Cancer Centre and Cardiac Care Facility. Thank

Bears that Care!
Advertisers at Niagara This Week were thrilled to participate in the 3rd
Annual Bears that Care campaign. Over 100 bears were donated and
given to children staying in the Paediatric Departments in Welland, Niagara
Falls, and St. Catharines.
Niagara This Week Representatives Dave Wilson and Tiffany Marinacci proudly
present Heather Gallagher, Clinical Manager for Maternal Child with bears to
make patients, like 16-year-old Hillary Usick, more comfortable during their
stay at the General.
Thank You CIBPA
In May, the Italian Business Professional Association presented three
Foundation offices with a $1,500 donation toward Ontario Breast Screening
Programs at the local hospital sites. Funds were raised from a gnocchi dinner
dance held at Club Castropignano.

Recently, a group of members visited our Foundation office to present a
cheque for $2,000 to purchase a Cataract Stretcher for the
Ophthalmology Department located at the Ontario Street Site. President
Ron MacAulay announced that the proceeds from the Daytona Party over the
next two years will also be directed toward the purchase of urgently needed
equipment for this department.
Proceeds from the 2007 annual Daytona Race Party held in February
purchased Televisions, DVD players and stands that will be installed in patient
waiting rooms throughout the hospital.
To date the Grantham Lions have raised over $19,000 for capital equipment
needs for the SCG.

St. Catharines Singing Saints Support Speech Pathology
The St. Catharines Singing Saints - Barbershop Harmony Society recently donated
$1,176 to purchase a Servox Digital Kit, Reading Comprehension Cards,
Question Card Games, Comprehension Trail Making Test, Hypernasality
Modification Program and Passy-Muir Speaking Valve for the Speech Pathology
Department at the St. Catharines General.
The Singing Saints are comprised of young and older gentlemen who enjoy singing
a cappella music in the barbershop harmony style. Now in their 55th year of
activity, the Singing Saints perform on request throughout the community. To date,
this talented group has donated over $12,000 toward the Speech Pathology
Department at the St. Catharines General Hospital.

Three Times Is A Charm for
Michael J. Brennan
Students from Michael J. Brennan Catholic School visited the SCG with 18
Easter baskets for the children in the Paediatric department. The 167
students bought items like small toys, activity books and games for our
young patients. This is the third year that Michael J. Brennan students have
been visiting the hospital at Easter.
Couture for the Cause
In April, the Club Roma Ladies Auxiliary hosted their annual Fashion Show
in support of the Evangelista/Adams Centre for Breast Screening. Guests
enjoyed a delightful culinary cuisine, while models displayed the latest
fashion trends for men, women and children.
From 1998 to 2006 the Ladies of Club Roma have raised a remarkable
$38,495 to help support the urgent needs of our hospital, with $26,050
of these funds directed towards the Evangelista/Adams Centre for Breast
Screening. This year’s event generated an impressive $5,000.

beautiful, hand-made items for patients in Palliative Care,
and retail sales for the Gift Shoppe. If you would like to
