The Presidents Sporting Club/EDSF (Registered Charity No.1001176), has now raised well 

over £1million which has been donated to schools organisations, to provide sporting 

facilities and opportunities for disabled children. The money raised is used to provide 

sports equipment, coaching and tuition, the hire of sports halls and the funding of outings 

and adventure type holidays. 

Taking part in sport increases the children’s self confidence, physical development and self 

esteem and helps them meet challenges that they may face later in life. 

Two examples of the support we have given over the years are Noel Thatcher and Giles Long. 

Both have received support from the Presidents Sporting Club/Harlow Handicapped Sports 

Foundation and both won Gold Medals at the Paralympics in Atlanta and Sydney. Noel 

Thatcher MBE, wrote recently,‘ I can say without exaggeration, that without the Club’s 

sponsorship all those years ago, many of the medals I have been fortunate to win would have 

been hanging around someone else’s neck. I would like to think that you can look at my two 

gold medals from Atlanta as a reward for all the magnificent work the Club does for the young 

and disabled in the community. It continues to be a privilege to be associated with your work’. 

This will be the 16th year that we have held our Celebrity Golf Day at The Hanbury 

Manor Hotel and Country Club. There are many people to thank for the success of the day, 

and there simply is not enough room to say thank you to all, but in particular I would 

personally like to thank Brian Keane from First Choice Marquees, Andie Jones from The 

Player Magazine for their continued support, and finally the Management Team of 

Hanbury Manor Hotel and Country Club for their professionalism and commitment.

Sports Experience Days... 

A cornerstone of our programme to make sporting activities more accessible to disabled 

children has been our ‘Sports Experience Days’. On these days the children have the 

opportunity to try every conceivable sport, with coaching being provided of the highest, 

and on many occasions, of National Standard. 

This year we again took the concept to all the schools in East Anglia. On three consecutive 

days almost 2,000 disabled children from special schools were given the opportunity to 

participate in thirty different sports at venues in Chelmsford, Luton and Thetford 



Sports Awards Lunch... 

Each year we hold a Children’s Sporting Lunch and in 2008 over 700 disabled children and 

their helpers from special schools throughout Essex, East Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire 

attended. The Children enjoyed a traditional lunch, had the opportunity to meet a host of 

celebrities, were entertained by clowns and face painters, followed by cabaret, disco and 

of course a visit from Father Christmas. 

The highlight of the lunch was an award ceremony to some of the children who had made 

significant achievements in sport. This was to recognise endeavour, rather than elitism, and 

varied from overcoming fear of water and swimming two or three strokes to taking part in 

an outward bound type course. 



Golf Tuition... 

The Presidents Sporting Club/Essex Disabled Sporting Foundation provides sporting 

facilities and opportunities for children with special needs. This includes arranging golf 

tuition for the children provided by golf professionals. Last year one of our long time 

supporters John Conteh also helped out

Rules Of The Competition... 

1. The competition will be a Stableford Competition with the best two individual scores at 

each hole combining for the team score 

2. The maximum handicap applying shall be Ladies 28 and Gentlemen 24 

3. All players will receive 3/4 of their playing or allowed handicap 

4. Gentlemen will play from the white tees and ladies from the red tees 

5. Strokes to be taken at the holes indicated by the strokes indexes on the gentlemen’s card 

6. The organizers reserve the right to make such changes to the format as they deem 

necessary to ensure the success of the event and will be the final arbiters on any 

disputed matter 

7. Players must hold official handicaps ofrecognized clubs. Your lowest or society 

handicap must be declared when you check in.The organisers reserve the right to check all 

details given for nominated players before and after the event 

8. Scorecards must be handed in as soon as the round is completed. Any score cards not 

returned will be void

Within the past three years nearly £1 million has been spent improving Course 

infrastructure. The largest single project has been the installation of one of the UK’s most

Red 2 – Flight Lieutenant Zane Sennett 

Flight Lieutenant Zane Sennett (33) is in his first year with the Red Arrows. Born in Hong 

Kong, Zane’s interest in aviation was inspired by his father, Brian, a former Royal Air Force 

and airline pilot. 

Red 7 

Red 7 - Flight Lieutenant Mike Ling 

Flight Lieutenant Mike Ling (30) is in his second year with the Red Arrows and is Synchro 

2 for the 2009 season. He grew up in Biggin Hill in Kent where his dream of flying with 

the Red Arrows first began, after seeing them display every year at the Biggin Hill Air Fair.

Red 8 – Squadron Leader Graham Duff 

Squadron Leader Graham Duff (33) is in his second year on the Red Arrows. He became 

an air cadet with 1247 (Penrith) Squadron ATC on his 13th birthday and went onto become 

a member of Bristol University Air Squadron whilst studying for a degree in Aeronautical 

Engineering. Graham joined the Royal Air Force in 1996 and became a member of the 

Royal Air Force Mountain Rescue Team for 18 months.
