Brief History and Culture of Maui

Maui honors its past, amidst its natural beauty and visitor attractions.

The chapters in Maui’s history are well documented and each culture

weaves the fabric of today’s experiences.

Lahaina is a town of major historical significance. Once the first capitol of

the Kingdom of Hawaii, a busy whaling port, and a plantation settlement,

you can still walk in the footsteps of Lahaina’s past. The Lahaina Historic

Trail, is a self-guided tour throughout Lahaina’s historic districts. The

Baldwin Home was the two-story house of Protestant missionaries in the

mid-1830s. Anachronistic structures like the Wo Hing Temple and the

Lahaina Jodo Mission highlight the influences of Chinese and Japanese

immigrants in Maui.

Famous aviator Charles Lindbergh was laid to rest in 1974 in an isolated

cemetery on the slopes of Haleakala, 12 miles beyond Hana, in Kipahulu.

This simple gravesite of the man who in 1927, became the first aviator

to fly solo across the Atlantic, is an oasis of gentle peace and quiet. The

cemetery is located next to the Palapala Hoʻomau Church, a limestone

and coral structure which was built in 1857.

Life takes on a simpler nature in places like Upcountry Maui and towns

like Makawao. Sprawling ranches and the paniolos (cowboys) who still

work them today, have an important place in Maui history, along with

plantations and missionaries.

Things to do

Bike the Volcano

One of the most unique opportunities

afforded by Maui’s tropical landscape is

downhill biking along the slopes Haleakala

Volcano. You’ll be taken to the top of

the 10,000+ foot summit for a stunning

sunrise above the clouds before starting

your adventure from the base of Haleakala

National Park. While not for the faint of

heart (or legs), the views from this incredible

adventure are unlike any other on Maui.

See the beauty of Maui’s barren volcanic

landscape as it transforms into the lush hills

of Upcountry Maui. Perfect for adventurous

families, couples, groups of friends or solo

travelers!

Road to Hana

Touted as one of the world’s best road

trips, we absolutely recommend the Road

to Hana for its many hidden gems and

natural attractions, including cascading

waterfalls, bamboo forests, jungle hiking

trails, lava tubes, exotic beaches, scenic

Maui Luaus

A Hawaii vacation staple, there are several

entertaining luaus to choose from on Maui. Typically

featuring a buffet or sit-down dinner, as well as

authentic Hawaiian or Polynesian dance, music and

entertainment, this is a wonderful family-friendly

experience for all ages. We love the Old Lahaina

Luau for its entertainment and food, though the

Feast at Lele puts on an amazing show as well.

Ask your hotel concierge for suggestions, or read

Kilauea Point Lighthouse

Perched at the northernmost tip of Kauai, the 52-

foot Daniel K. Inouye Kilauea Point Lighthouse

was built in 1913 as a beacon for traveling ships.

Although its light was turned off in the 1970s and

has been replaced by an automatic beacon, it

still serves as one of the island’s most frequented

attractions.

The view off the rugged northern coastline and

the deep-blue Pacific makes this the perfect

vantage point for photos. This is also the location

of the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge,

a sanctuary for seabirds. Signage throughout

the refuge identifies the area’s bird species,

including frigates, shearwaters, boobies and

Laysan albatrosses nesting on the property. You’ll

see them soar the skies above the refuge, many

landing on a small nearby island covered in birds.

During December through May, you may even

catch a glimpse of humpback whales. This scenic

peninsula, 200-feet above sea level, is a must-see

on your visit to the North Shore.

Koke’e State Park

Napali Coast State Wilderness Park

Beautiful views grace Napali Coast State Park. The na pali (high

cliffs) reach as much as 4,000 feet (1,200 meters) above the Pacific

Ocean. From this vantage point, you can not only see the Pacific

Ocean, but also waterfalls and the Kalalau Valley.

Originally built in the 1800s (with some parts rebuilt in the 1930s)

the Kalalau Trail crosses five valleys and ends at Kalalau Beach.

Hikers will see a lush landscape while travelling through the valleys,

as well as well as tall cliffs aligning the ocean.

The Kalalau Trail is 11 miles long and takes about a day to traverse.

The first couple of miles from Ha’ena State Park to Hanakapi’ai

Beach are good day hike. However, completing the entire trail is

recommended for experienced hikers.

Given the amount of time that the hike takes (all day, for just one

way), you must have a camping permit (beyond Hanakapi’ai Valley),

if you want to do the entire hike.

If you’re not in the mood for hiking, local companies offer tours

via helicopter and boat.

Just north of Waimea Canyon State Park, Koke’e State Park is a

great park for hiking.

There are seven major hiking trails in Koke’e State Park:

• Alakai Swamp Trail

• Awaʻawapuhi Trail

• Kawaikoi Stream Trail

• Nuʻalolo Cliffs Trail

• Nuʻalolo Trail

• Pihea Trail

• Poomau Canyon Lookout Trail

Along the way, hikers can expect to see lush, native vegetation,

views of the ocean, and native birds. Kalalau Valley can also be

seen from the park – this was the backdrop for Jack London’s

short story Koʻolau the Leper.

Stop by the Koke’e Natural History Museum for current trail information

and maps.

In October, there’s a festival honoring Queen Emma of Hawaii.

Makena Beach

-aka Oneloa or Big Beach Maui

Located on the Southside of Maui, off of

Makena Alanui Road, Big Beach claims

our vote for the best beach Maui has to

offer. You’ll find approximately a mile of

perfect orange and white sand, cliffy dramatic

landscape, and water that’s brilliant

blue and green. There is little reef around

here, which makes the sand bottom shine

up through the water to give it that tropical

brightness. There are three entrances

to Makena Beach (Big Beach.) The first has

the largest parking area and is the closest

point to Little Beach, which is just around

the corner. The second entrance has a

smaller paved lot. The 3rd is dirt parking

only. The beach over there is smaller than

at the first 2 entrances.

Big Beach is famous for its inclined shoreline

and large shore break. Skimboarding,

body boarding, and body surfing are all

very popular here for this reason. Caution

is advised for those with children or inexperienced

ocean swimmers when there’s

large swell. These waves are deceptively

powerful and can dump you into the sand

without notice. We don’t recommend

snorkeling in this area. Surfing also isn’t

usually done here because of the shore

break conditions. Big Beach has Port-apotties,

picnic tables, and shady areas

under large trees. Be careful when walking

out on the sand at first. These trees

have large thorns that can be found on

the ground underneath and around them.

We’ve seen these thorns go clear through

a sandal while walking. Going barefoot

can be dangerous near the trees. Wait to

take off your sandals or shoes till you get

out past the trees. Around the corner, to

the North, is a path to Little Beach.

Little Beach

Maui has a couple nudist beaches, which

Little Beach is the Mecca. The waves here

are perfect for bodysurfing, and sometimes

surfing, but depending on what

day and the time of day it is, you may be

dodging naked people. During a South or

Southwest Swell, the surf can be fun here

(though fickle). It offers a left hand reef

break off of the South side of the beach.

This beach is beautiful and as perfect as

can be. On Sundays, you’ll find a different

atmosphere than usual with crowds unusually

large for Little Beach. For sunset,

everyone celebrates by swimming and

cheering as a large drum circle beats away.

Once it gets dark, Little Beach becomes a

real spectacle. All types of people, nude

or clothed, begin to dance in the circle

with fire. The fire dancers at little beach

are incredible. You’ll sometimes find professional

fire twirlers with more than one

ball of fire and fancy flaming outfits. The

imagination is strong at Little Beach when

it comes to new and entertaining ways

to play with fire. We’ve seen everything

from heated hula-hoops to burning bras.

You’ll enjoy this ceremony that occurs every

Sunday night. You don’t need to get

undressed either. Bring a flashlight to get

back over the cliff at night. Lately the police

have limited the event to stop around

8-9pm, so get there before sunset to really

experience Maui’s Little Beach activities.

The Cultural Scene

The cultural attractions of Kauai is among the most unique of the Hawaiian islands, despite the fact that most of the Hawaiians

islands already have a unique culture all on their own. The Garden Isle is a land with a rich and varied culture, as seen in

its local theater performers, songs, dance, music, language, food, and native arts. Its unique culture also pervades the whole

island with the ready and happy smiles of its locals who were born with and live in the spirit of aloha.

Making of leis

The hula dance

No visit to the island is complete without seeing a group of locals performing the hula. The

hula dance is the traditional Hawaiian dance that probably originated from Polynesian settlers

and is the subject of numerous legends told from generation to generation. It is said

that Molokai was the first-ever island to witness the hula dance.

The hula dance is a series of graceful movements that are actually interpretations of the mele

or the song or chanting that is sang along with the hula dance. Locals use the mele to tell of

their island’s history, culture, and ancient ceremonies as a way to orally pass down their traditions

from one generation to the next.

The two major styles of the hula dance are the kahiko and the auana. The kahiko is the ancient

hula, the traditional way of dancing before Westerners set foot on the island. The auana

is the hula style that developed in the 19th and 20th century which evolved as a result of the

island’s exposure to Westerners and is performed along with the music of the ukulele, the

double bass and the guitar. Other exotic dances from Tahiti, Samoa, New Zealand, and other

Polynesian islands are also performed in most cultural gatherings, but none have the distinctive

Hawaiian flair displayed by the hula. During the 1800s, visiting missionaries who saw the

locals dance the hula thought that it was too suggestive and had it outlawed. Today, the hula

is one of the most distinctive cultural attractions in the Hawaiian islands.

The lei, just like the hula, is one of the most recognizable images of Hawaii and its islands.

In the islands, leis are symbols for harmony, friendship, and the start of new things. Presentation

of the lei was often done on special occasions such as when people would gather

to celebrate events, tasks, and other joyous moments. Leis are garlands of flowers that are

strung together and the ends tied together. Another version of the lei is the maile, which is

a garland of vines and leaves known for their sweet-smelling scent. It is also an island tradition

to drape leis on special visitors and those who have come for the first time on the island.

Making of Kapa cloths

Kapa making is the process of making fabrics from kapa or bark. This process

is a tradition of most Hawaiian women who have learned from their mothers

and grandmothers the long and difficult task of fashioning cloth from the

barks of specific types of plants. The bark is first treated with saltwater for several

days to make it soft. They are then removed from the water, laid out on a

flat surface and pounded flat with a round pounder, after which they are again

soaked. As soon as the strips dry and the kapa is finished, it is decorated with

hand paintings and coated with oil to protect it from the rain and dampness.

Then it is stored with flowers and other scented items so that it can soak up

the fragrance.

Reasons to Juice:

• Juicing allows your digestive system to rest, so

that energy may go into elimination, recovery

and healing, instead of digestion. During this

time, cells can repair themselves and detoxify.

Freshly pressed juices provide enzymes as

well as vitamins and minerals that are easily

assimilated.

• Juicing will help to break down the vegetables,

making it easier to assimilate, so you will

receive most of the nutrition.

• Juicing allows you to consume more vegetables

than you normally would. Some people

may find eating vegetables difficult, but it can

be easily accomplished with a quick glass of

vegetable juice.

• You can add a wider variety of vegetables in

your diet. Many people eat the same vegetables,

raw or cooked, every day. Foods should

be rotated to prevent developing allergies.

With juicing, you can juice a wide variety of

vegetables that you may not normally enjoy

eating whole.

Basic Green Juice

(16oz Serving Size):

1 Cucumber; 4 Celery Stalks; 2 Apples;

6-8 Leaves Kale; 1/2 Lemon; 1 tbsp Ginger

Spouting Horn

On Kauai’s South Shore you’ll find the spectacular

Spouting Horn blowhole, one of the

most photographed spots on Kauai. The

Poipu surf channels into a natural lava tube

here and releases a huge spout of water during

large swells. You’ll also hear a hiss and a

roar that is the basis of a Hawaiian legend.

Ancient Hawaiians believed this coastline

was once guarded by a giant moo (lizard)

named Kaikapu. Everyone was afraid of the

moo because it would eat anyone who tried

to fish or swim in the area. One day, a young

boy named Liko entered the ocean to outwit

the lizard. Kaikapu attacked him, but Liko

thrust a sharp stick into her mouth, swam

under the lava shelf, and escaped through a

small hole to the surface. The moo followed

Liko and got stuck in the lava tube. To this

day, you can hear the lizard’s roar and see her

breath spraying from the blowhole.

Access to Spouting Horn Park is convenient

with ample parking and the view from the

lookout is luminous at sunset. The Poipu

coastline is also a great vantage point to look

for humpback whales during whale watching

season from December to May.

Understand What

Chiropractic Care Does!

Many of the un-wanted conditions that people suffer from everyday can be traced

back to spinal mis-alignment or subluxation & nerve system interference. Doctors

of Chiropractic are specialist in the detection, correction and prevention of nerve

system interference. Chiropractic makes sense, it’s scientific, incredibly safe, it’s

natural and looks to cover the underlying cause of your problem.
