a message
from our Partner
BY PETER TOWNSEND
At Coastline we
proudly offer
the same range
of personal and
business banking
services and
products that
any big bank
can, with one
huge difference,
we are customer
owned and 100%
committed to
investing in our
community.
The Education @ Glasshouse Program
shares similar values with Coastline,
in that we both exist to support the
people who live, work and interact in the
communities in which we operate.
Coastline sought the opportunity to
partner with the Education @ Glasshouse
program following the launch of our
Cubs and Kickstart accounts and our
School Visit Program in 2019.
2020 was a challenging year for all
businesses throughout the community
due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With
the Glasshouse being forced to close
its doors, the Education @ Glasshouse
program was put on hold. Coastline’s
partnership remained strong and we are
now able to assist the Glasshouse to offer
more shows and performances in 2021.
The partnership continues to present
opportunities to build positive
relationships with our local schools and
highlights our commitment to support
education outside of the classroom and
within the broader community.
We understand the importance of
giving students access to valuable
learning experiences which inspire
both creativity and innovation.
As Principal Partner, this exciting
opportunity allows us to play an
important role in providing access
for students to participate in the
unique and creative events hosted
within the program which promotes
cultural diversity.
The Glasshouse is a premier
destination showcasing world class
productions in performing arts that
boosts our local economy and tourism
sector in the Greater Port Macquarie
region.
Coastline has been operating in Port
Macquarie since 2001 and relocated to
our current site within the Settlement
City shopping centre in 2016. We are
excited to contribute to the longevity
and sustainability of the Education @
Glasshouse program and look forward to
its continued success.

We offer a ‘Coastline Cubs School Visit Program’
which helps educate young students on how to best
manage their money and guide them to make sensible
and worthwhile financial decisions in the future.
Finance is non-intuitive and to work towards financial literacy, we believe
introducing students to the world of finance will prove to be a beneficial
endeavour. This program provides students with a hands-on practical learning
experience on the reality of banking and managing finances.
We offer ‘in-store’ visits and have added ‘in school’ visits this year as we
understand it is not always easy bringing a class into the branch (as exciting as
it is).
During the ‘in store’ visits, students experience transactional based activities
such as using a coin counting machine to exchange 5 x$1 coins into a $5 note,
which they keep, this initiative is supported by the Community Foundation.
Students are then engaged in a guided tour where they are shown the big safe,
spin money through the note counter and partake in fun money-based learning
activities assisted by our staff.
Our ‘in school’ visit program has been amended to be suitable for a classroom-
still involving REAL money and other engaging learning activities.
Each student is presented with a goodie bag and certificate at the conclusion
of the excursion.
The Coastline Cubs School Visit Program correlates with outcomes in the
NSW Education Standards Authority Mathematics syllabus and the Early
Years Learning Framework.

common grounding in studio-based practice and a passionate commitment
to experimentation. The artists’ approaches vary considerably, from abstract
and expressive genres to experimentation with form, to cultural landscapes and
political perspectives, dada and the surreal, interior viewpoints and the everyday.
The work demonstrates the various disciplines taught at NAS; ceramics, painting,
photomedia, printmaking, sculpture, as well as inter-disciplinary practices
utilising digital media, assemblage, performance and artist books.

GLASSHOUSE PORT MACQUARIE AND PORT MACQUARIE PERFORMING ARTS
PRESENTS A VICTORIAN STATE BALLET PRODUCTION
THE LITTLE MERMAID
A full length classical ballet production of the traditional
fairy-tale story.
The Little Mermaid is a new work in the Victorian State Ballet repertoire
that follows the narrative based predominately on the story by
Hans Christian Andersen.
Choreography by Michelle Cassar de Sierra is a stunning display of
classical ballet and physical theatre that magically tell the tale of this much
loved story.
The story unfolds in another world where a young mermaid dreams of a
life beyond the sea. She bears witness to a shipwreck and comes to aid
a drowning sailor. Having saved his life and delivered him back to shore,
her curiosity is awakened, and throwing caution to the wind, she seeks
the council of the wise sea crone who advises her that all gifts come with
a warning yet grants her the power of transformation. Re-united with her
sailor, she struggles to conform to human ways and quickly discovers life
in a palace, chasing a prince, and navigating her new legs is not as easy as
she dreamed!
Come and see the magnificent and colourful costumes, sets and props
accentuating the beauty and splendour of this magical story, together with
the outstanding skill, artistry and technique of the Victorian State Ballet.

GLASSHOUSE REGIONAL GALLERY PRESENTS
ARTIST IN RESIDENCE EXHIBITION
EMMA WALKER
The Gallery is dedicated to showcasing Australian contemporary
arts practice, creating opportunities for contemporary artists to
connect with our regional audiences and vice versa.
Emma Walker consistently and evocatively engages with the
natural world, looking at the patterns and rhythms that recur
in nature. Carving, sanding, digging, grinding, glazing, dripping
and scratching into layered timber, the artist creates a unique
process and approach to her sculptural wall paintings. From
ancient landscapes of sea, rock and sky to the microscopic
patterns and rhythms that power existence, her work moves
between the micro and the macro in a formative dance. As much
about the process of painting as they are with visually imprinting
the Australian environment, Walker’s unique imagery emerges
from a combination of experimentation and automaticity, each
mark growing from the next in a catalytic reaction that emulates
the geological occurrences that cause continents to move and
shorelines to reshape, etching on the faces of rocks, rivers and
ravines.
Our Artist in Residence program connects our community with
visiting artists. The Glasshouse Artist in Residency program
provides a working space for artists to develop their arts practice,
resulting in a new and exciting never before seen exhibition.

TERM 2
PERFORMANCE
SNEAK PEEK
Animal Farm, one of the most enduring political
commentaries returns in a multi-award winning, criticallyacclaimed
theatre production. George Orwell’s intensely
powerful fairy tale allegorizes and satirizes communist
governments while illustrating with stunning simplicity
how greed and power corrupts with devastating
consequences to all who yield.
Revolution has taken place at Manor Farm. The pigs have
assumed control and all the animals, fueled by enthusiastic
camaraderie and guided by a set of self-imposed rules, are
promised a better life free from the self-serving greed of
humans. However, it is not long until the rules that promised
equality and freedom become the shackles that bind the
animals once again.
Bring your students and introduce them to one of the most
controversial and studied political commentaries around live
on the Glasshouse stage.

A very cheeky, very clever, utterly irreverent riff on Hamlet –

Hamlet is already full of things kids love in a good story: ghosts,

and you have a brilliantly disguised Shakespearean tragedy for
everyone aged five and over.
And that’s not all... expect bonus pillow fights, pirates, ninjas,
ninja pirates, aliens, ninja pirate aliens, zombies and a bunch of
other hilarious stuff as The Listies take kids and their adults on
a fun-filled hour of theatre. The only thing we can be sure of is
that everyone dies at the end – including the audience!

EDUCATION KITS AVAILABLE TO SCHOOLS
ATTENDING A PRODUCTION
Kits have been created to support schools engagement and build
connections with different Schools and Drama syllabi. The kits include
information sheets on Shakespeare and Hamlet, with discussion prompts
about the production and The Listies, to provide students context before
they experience the show.
Each kit will also include follow-up discussion points, workshop, and
drama activities to extend the experience for school groups.
POST PERFORMANCE IN-SCHOOL WORKSHOPS
Alongside the national tour of Hamlet: Prince of
Skidmark, Critical Stages Touring will be offering the
opportunity of a post-show in-school workshop. This
will be the ideal follow up to the production, with the
focus on inspiring students to develop their own ideas
for a ‘Shakespeare-remixed’ performance.
This will work especially well for any students studying
Shakespeare (or any classic text) within their classroom,
and this text can be the leaping-off point for imaginative
exercises, devising and improvisation activities,
culminating in presentation of short scenes.
Two 120-minute workshops are available to assist young
people to:
− Be inspired by live performance;
− Explore their own creative imagination;
− Use classic texts as a launching off point for their
imaginative exercises;
− Learn about improvisation and devising skills;
− Present short scenes in small groups at the end
of the workshop.

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE EXHIBITION
ANNA-WILI
HIGHFIELD
The Gallery is dedicated to showcasing Australian
contemporary arts practice, creating opportunities for
contemporary artists to connect with our regional audiences
and vice versa.
Anna-Wili’s works explore the organic qualities and
resistance of materials, generating a tension between the
complex realism of form and the limitations and economy of
the materials used. They represent life in an immediate way
that conveys the energy, movement and physical character
of different creatures. Her aim is to engineer a moment
of contact with nature in a way that emphasises both the
startling differences and similarities of human and animal
forms and consciousness.
Our Artist in Residence program connects our community
with visiting artists. The Glasshouse Artist in Residency
program provides a working space for artists to develop their
arts practice, resulting in a new and exciting never before
seen exhibition.

WRITTEN BY LEWIS TRESTON
CREATED BY AUSTRALIAN THEATRE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE (ATYP) IN
ASSOCIATION WITH THE ADVOCATE FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE
(ACYP)
Stories with heart, honesty and humanity.
Follow Me Home is an insightful new theatre production by awardwinning
playwright Lewis Treston. Presented as a series of vignettes, the
play reveals the real stories of a group of extraordinarily strong, resilient
and courageous young people from across Australia.
Telling the truth, being honest and sharing your story takes guts. Real
guts. How do you tell your friend she can’t sleep over anymore? Can
you help a parent when she’s lost all hope? How can you strive for
independence when the system is working against you? And what if just
being honest means you’re out on the street?
Inspired by the real life stories shared by homeless young people across
NSW, this thought provoking work from Australian Theatre for Young
People (ATYP) is a must see for audiences aged 14 and over. Four talented
young actors take on multiple roles in a fast paced show that will leave
audiences with a shift in perspective, a little more compassion and a
deeper understanding of the world around them.
Audience Advice
Follow Me Home depicts young people living with the realities of homelessness.
These stories explore themes of: domestic and family violence, physical abuse and
neglect, drug use, mental Illness, references to suicide, references to sexual abuse.

Performance Experience for Students
Professional Development for Teachers
If you have an outstanding group of young performer’s eager to hone
their dramatic performance skills by participating in Follow Me Home,
ATYP will work with you to include your students in the production.
One of the best ways to learn is by working with leading professionals
and ATYP’s Artistic Director will work with an Educator on a virtual
masterclass exploring each of the scenes from Follow Me Home and
considerations in casting and rehearsing each piece. Students can
then rehearse the scenes.
When the cast of the show arrive in your community, they then
rehearse the scenes with your young performers so they can feel
what it is like working with professional actors. ATYP will then select
a number of student performers to participate in the production to
be performed to the broader Port Macquarie Hastings Community
at the Glasshouse on Thursday 19 August, 1pm. Students selected
will participate in a rehearsal workshop in preparation for their stage

It is with great pleasure that the Grafton Regional Gallery presents
the 2020 Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award (JADA), especially in
these challenging times. The JADA is the Gallery’s flagship biennial
art prize graciously sponsored by the Friends of Grafton Gallery.
It is with great anticipation and excitement that the project develops
every two years and, as the gallery expands in 2020, the JADA
continues to celebrate Australian contemporary drawing at it’s
finest.
This year that tradition of excellence continues with 56 artists
selected from a record 659 entries for the exhibition. The exhibition
will continue its touring legacy by travelling to communities
across Australia and promoting contemporary drawing to regional
audiences for the next two years.
The JADA celebrates drawing in all its forms. From the expressive
and the abstract, to the hyper-realism that is beyond belief, the
works evoke a poetic and emotional response to our environment
and the human condition. Many of the finalists selected question
and challenge the notion of the traditional drawing, while others
provide a contemporary perspective and reinvigorate those
traditions.

diverse critical readings, unlocking language and character,
hearing actors discuss the plays’ famous ambiguities and

Shaun isn’t like the other Shearers in Shaggy Gully…
...he’d rather be styling than shearing and instead of ‘sheep-dog’,

Stage 2 of the HSIE syllabus.
The kit includes a comprehensive teacher’s guide providing
historical detail, ideas for student activities, classroom
posters, reference books, DVDs and excursion ideas. In
addition to the kit is a box of historic artefacts.
Schools are able to book out the box of museum objects
for use in the classroom.
Why not use this in association with a visit to the
Glasshouse to view the archaeological remains and a stop
at the nearby Port Macquarie Museum?

About the FILM: To see the ocean for the first time - the feature animation is a narration
through line and tone, a series of drawing and paintings, Fuller breathes life into the many
tales and stories told about the local (now passed) larrikin, who much like Fuller found
solace in the beautiful ocean air of Port Macquarie.

ONLINE RESOURCE
The Glasshouse Regional Gallery 2018 Artist in Resident
Todd Fuller has created an online education resource for
teachers and students.
This online resource is based around the work To see the
ocean for the first time, an animation drawn by hand,
locally focused on the story of Harry, from Harry’s Lookout.
Todd has created two education kits for both Primary and
Secondary students. Aligning with your current syllabus
these kits focus on art making and art theory, making it a
fun interactive way to learn.
About Todd Fuller: Fuller has exhibited across Australia and internationally including the
United States, Italy, France, South Korea, Bangladesh, England, Singapore and Malta. He
has undertaken international residency at the Cite International Des Art in Paris, and at the
British School in Rome. He has also been invited to participate in a number of domestic
residencies including Bundanon, Grafton Hill and Blacktown. Fuller was awarded an
honorable mention at the 15th Asian Art Biennale and in 2012 was appointed the Art Fellow
at Sydney Grammar School. Most recently Fuller won the 2018 JADA Drawing Prize.

Scholarship
program
Coastline launched an exciting new
initiative in 2019 awarding scholarships
to primary school students from
Kindergarten to Year Five who excel in
extra-curricular activities.
The Coastline Cubs Scholarship program provides up to 5
x $250 scholarships per year, per school assisting students
with costs associated with their extracurricular activities
which may be anything from music and drama to dancing
and sport. Coastline partnered with Crescent Head Public
School in 2019 who were the inaugural recipients of
the Cubs Scholarship program. Here are some of the
scholarship recipients from Crescent Head Public School
telling us how Coastline’s support has helped them to
achieve their goals!
Charlize Arden
I have bought all the plants and given them
to the school. They have all been planted and
they are going great.
The plants are:
• Bananas
• Avocado
• Lemonade
• Apple
• Mandarin
• Mango
I am hoping these six trees will provide lots of
fruit for current and future students to pick
and eat at school.
Thank you for this opportunity.

The Coastline Scholarship enabled
me to attend a specialised class with
the Australian Ballet School. It was a
wonderful experience, I learnt many
more steps and variations of them,
which is an important part of classical
ballet.
I also used some money on my
Australian Ballet School (ABS)
tracksuit, which is mandatory if you
are in the ABS Interstate Training
Program.
If your school is interested in our Coastline Cubs Scholarship
Program, or you have students who would benefit - please contact
us at creativestrategies@coastline.com.au
Coastline4Community is our
community volunteering program and
encourages our staff to take up to
three days of paid leave per year to
help in the community.
If your school could use an extra
helping hand in such things as reading
or arts with kids, covering reading
books, school gardening, canteen or
fete days, this could be an excellent
opportunity for us work together -
please get in touch with us at
creativestrategies@coastline.com.au

you to ensure that your students:
• laugh but don’t chat
• listen and don’t text, tweet or call (turn off their mobile and iPod)
• be on the edge of their seat but not in anyone else’s (or the aisle!)
• take home a great experience but don’t take photographs
• write notes later or they might miss something magical
• bring a hunger for knowledge but don’t bring food or

drink into the theatre.
