Game Day and our 4th in the BBL Cup, or
“Pre Season” as it’s been called by some.
Either way, as we haven’t been able to bask in
the glory of a Raiders trophy in longer than one
can remember, a cup run to the Final in January
in Birmingham seems like a hoot of the highest
order.
The last time Raiders made a final, in March
2017 against Leicester in Glasgow, it ended
in recrimination and humiliation, losing a BBL
record 91/58. It was a reminder that there was
much improvement to make both on and off
the court for Raiders to live alongside the top
teams of the BBL. Major changes took place
just months later, and 3 years on, here we are.
The Raiders we enjoy today are set on a path
to challenge for every trophy but while there
will be losses and a few injury bumps in the
road, the club has put firmly behind it recent
challenges and is now in as competitive position
on court and with the stability to match it
behind the scenes, at any stage in its history.
Your Raiders are moving forward together on
every level.
So, talking of Pre-Season, the off-court team
here have been fantastic over the last few
months. I’d like to give an honourable mention
to Phil Hughes. While no stranger to the club or
it’s machinations since joining us in late 2019,
he plunged headlong into the role of GM at a
time when we simply didn’t know if we would
even have a season ahead of us. So the idea of
any pre season seemed a long shot when we
faced the nuclear option of “No-Season”.
Since, we’ve all found ourselves having to
think in a new way, getting creative with the
challenges, including the task of engaging with
sponsors, hopefully you spotted the scenery
changes at the Pavilions from Wednesday’s
broadcast. With a lot of empty space to fill, we
took a leaf out of other sports venues who’ve
used the seating in an innovative way. While for
the moment we think they look pretty cool, it’s
not quite as good as seeing you all there.
Effectively everything you see has been put
together in weeks and not the usual 4-5 months
of the Summertime off season. A gargantuan
effort and well done to all concerned within the
club. Continued ...
Today, we welcome Surrey Scorchers, formerly
known as Guildford Heat, Surrey Heat or
Surrey United. I’ll admit, it’s been hard to keep
up over the years!
Coach Creon has been busy building a very
experienced BBL roster over recent months and
Raiders fans know only too well fan favourite
Rashad Hassan – great guy, one of the league’s
best inside players but now, his most important
role, daddy to Kenzie.
Also, cast your minds back to November 2011,
avid Foxy followers will remember old stager
Martelle Mclemore shoving to the ground Foxy
who “de-bagged” the player in revenge in front
of the Pavilions crowd, resulting in a fine from
the league for not controlling our mascot. Well,
he’s back at the Pavilions today for Scorchers,
shorts and all.
Enjoy the game from home, Stay Safe and
thank you for your support.
I know Deuce today will prove a big obstacle to
us getting that Cup win alongside experienced
BBL’ers Tayo Ogedengbe, Trayvonn Wright,
Caylin Raftopoulos and Connor Cashaw.
Go Raiders!!
PAUL JAMES
PLYMOUTH RAIDERS COACH
Good afternoon and welcome to the
Pavilions Plymouth for this BBL Cup match
against Surrey Scorchers.
I was underwhelmed with our performance
here last Wednesday against Bristol and
especially after the solid we had in our
previous two games.
We have a lot of talent on the team, but
talent alone will not win you games and we
certainly did not use our talent to the best
of our abilities against the Flyers. We did not
impact the game as a collective on any level
that was going to put us in a position to win
and got what we deserved on the night.
It has been a punishing schedule and this
is where we need to show great mental
toughness, be able to pick ourselves up,
forget about the last game and move on
totally focus on the next games in front
of us.
We will learn from this and be a better
group because of it, but the most important
thing right now is to get the wins we need
to qualify out of the group and into for the
next round of the BBL cup.
I extend a warm welcome to Surrey
Scorcher coaching staff and players for
this our penultimate BBL Cup group match.
Bristol came out and played with a their
normal excessive physicality and this time
around we did not react in the right way or
play in the competitive manner that we are
looking for and ultimately ended up chasing
the game for the most part.
Enjoy the game
GO Raiders!!!
PAUL JAMES
COACH
In a way I am hoping this is a blessing and
that lessons will be learnt in that if we are
not ready to compete and focused on
what we need to do, then we will get beat.
I would rather this happen now than once
the league gets underway.
WAY BACK WHEN
... THE BBL CUP WAS BORN
As we come towards the end of the BBL Cup
group stage games, I thought it was worth
looking back at the history of the competition,
and how the Raiders have fared.
The BBL Cup is into its 18th season and
was formed off the back of a disagreement
between the BBL and the England Basketball
Association over the number of work permit
holders allowed to play in a single game in
the National Cup. The Haribo Cup as it was
known in 2003/04, featured the 10 BBL sides
with Sheffield facing Brighton and Chester
coming up against Newcastle to see who
progressed to the quarter finals where the
other six teams waited.
Raiders joined the competition in the
2004/05 season following their acceptance
into the BBL. It wasn’t the first time the team
had come up against BBL opposition, having
faced teams for several seasons prior in the
National Cup and in the BBL Trophy which
they were invited into in 2003, following their
runner up finish in the National League
Conference the previous year.
Raiders first game in the competition saw
them travel to Birmingham Bullets, where a
young faced Jay Marriott, who later went
on to play and coach the Raiders, suited up
for the Bullets. A narrow 73 - 75 win for the
visitors pushed them through to the quarter
finals, but that was as far as it was to go for
the new boys.
On the 18th January 2009, following two
wins in six games in the competition over four
years, Raiders reached their first Cup Final.
A trip to the NIA in Birmingham saw them
face Everton Tigers, a team who had come
into money. It proved to be a disastrous
game for the Raiders as they fell to a heavy
103 - 49 defeat, a winning margin which still
stands as a record. Three years later, the
Raiders returned to the NIA in their second
final appearance and faced Newcastle
Eagles. A high scoring 115 - 94 game saw
the Eagles come out on top, which again set
a few records which are still around. It’s the
highest scoring Cup final, the most points
scored by a winning team, the most points
scored by a losing team (barring four
occasions this would have won the game)
and it also saw Charles Smith hit 39 points
for the Eagles, the most by any player in a final.
A couple of semi-final appearances over the
next two seasons were the closest the Raiders
got to returning to the final, and since
then and prior to this season, three wins in 16
games has only seen them progress past the
first round on one occasion. These wins have
all been at the Pavilions and against Bristol,
Surrey and Worcester who we have been
drawn against in this year’s competition.
Raiders have already broken their seven-year
drought of an away win in the competition
and hopefully by the time this is published,
they will have made that two away wins
against a side who inflicted the last away
defeat on the Raiders in the Cup just
PLYMOUTH MARJON BASKETBALL PROGRAMME
in Partnership with Plymouth Raiders
Welcome, to the fans, partners, and
colleagues of Plymouth Raiders
Basketball Club.
as Denzel Ubiaro, Isaiah Walker and Liam
Langridge Barker named to the professional
team in the recent seasons and more to expect.
We are the Plymouth Marjon University
Basketball Programme, a programme
dedicated to developing the U23 Basketball
Player alongside their Undergraduate or
Postgraduate degree at Plymouth Marjon
University, existing in the pathway
partnership with the Plymouth Raiders
Basketball Club.
In the last 2 years, we have had positive
success, from the students graduating,
undefeated league and cup records,
winning finals, introducing a second programme
team, players stepping up into the professional
team roster and in 2020 having a winning
league season, with our competitive ambition,
to be in the top-flight BUCS Premier! However,
the completition of competition was disrupted
by COVID, in March.
We worked hard during the summer with our
student recruitment and are pleased with
the compliment of new student athletes we
attracted to the University to compete under
the Plymouth Marjon University and Plymouth
Raiders Brand. As part of this new season
Plymouth Raiders announced a second men’s
team to the franchise, Plymouth Raiders II
comprised of student athletes that have the
opportunities to progress in the game and
would play in Basketball England’s NBL.
It is fair to write, we have had to embrace
challenges similarly to many others with
the fluctuation of access to training,
competition with the barriers of COVID,
but we have remained safe, trained successfully
and hope to continue in the pursuit of
our ambitions. We have a programme mantra
‘Be where your feet are’, referring to being
present, control the controllable, take value
for the moment. We will continue striving with
our students to achieve this, academically and
sporting and supporting the well-being of our
athletes in the climate of this pandemic.
Whilst the games, are not yet to commence,
we are preparing on and off the court, we are
working in this moment and for the moment
we wish to create ahead, for players nationally,
for the players in the south west, it’s clubs,
academy’s and community. We are encouraging
sponsors, partners and independent businesses
to join, contribute and aspire to inspire the
fantastic environment, student and operations
of our programme, we have young ambassadors
across social media, events and competition,
who have positive contributions to make.
LADIES
I didn’t actually discover my love for
basketball until university. I decided to
change degree in my third year of university
and wanted to try a new sport … it was the
best decision I made. I had absolutely no
idea how to play or any idea of the rules but
I was surrounded by a bunch of girls who
were absolutely amazing and we just had
fun with it… we called ourselves ‘The Peas’ in
these giant green men’s kit. We lost nearly
every game and I had the time of my life!
That was 7 years ago… Somewhere along
the way I started to develop in the sport
and eventually joined the Plymouth Raiders
Ladies roughly 5 years ago.
In the Raiders team I was pushed by my
coaches and the very skilled girls around
me and continued to develop. Last year we
found ourselves thin on the ground as lots
of our players left Plymouth. This however
opened opportunities to step up both
on and off the court… Myself and Stevie
worked hard to recruit and gained the
support of some absolutely incredible new
girls that are now fundamental to the team.
These girls, many recruited from the
amazing work of Unity Through Basketball,
have come to Raiders with an amazing
positive energy and love for the sport that
has truly developed my love for the game.
Not only are they a super talented bunch,
but I feel as a team we have big things
ahead of us. My hope is that we can go on
to win the local league and I have no doubt
this is achievable with our current squad.
Likewise, in the future I believe we can strive
for National League.
Last season we were also fortunate enough
to recruit Pete as our new coach. Pete has
been incredible both on and off the court
at ensuring training goes ahead (when
allowed) despite these difficult times and
I have no doubt with his support this team
has big things to come. Basketball has given
me many things including my partner Denzel
(Ubiaro) who pushes me to develop in the
sport and an incredible support network of
teammates both on and off the court.
I am excited for next season when we can
hopefully get out there and play again!
MATCH REPORT
HOME VS BRISTOL FLYERS
PLYMOUTH RAIDERS 65
VS BRISTOL FLYERS 78
Plymouth Raiders succumbed to their first loss
in their second South West derby of the season,
after a controlled defensive performance from
Bristol Flyers down the stretch saw them shut
out the home side by 13 points, notching their
first win in the BBL Cup campaign.
Raiders’ coach Paul James expressed
disappointment after the game, saying:
“we just weren’t ready to play from the start,
we weren’t aggressive defensively or aggressive
offensively and just passed the ball side to side.”
Coach James also addressed if the lack of a
preseason played a factor in this result, stating:
“That may have something on the outcome,
but to be fair if you’re not going to move the
ball and have that intensity then you’re going
to struggle, especially against a team like
Bristol. They were the aggressor; they weren’t
concerned about picking up fouls and we didn’t
match that.”
Flyers signalled their intent early, picking up
five early points through an open three from
Raphell Thomas-Edwards, and a teardrop
shot from newly signed GB international Teddy
Okereafor. Raiders responded through a Will
Neighbour post hook off an inbound move, but
the momentum was headed in Flyers’ favour.
The away side were very tough on defence,
forcing Raiders into early mistakes.
26
Zach Copeland capitalised on his chances,
knocking down two quick threes, with Daniel
Edozie and Liam Davis upping the intensity in
the paint to end the quarter with a seven-point
lead.
The second period saw a massive momentum
swing in the host’s favour, seeing them get seven
consecutive defensive stops before Bristol’s
first points of the quarter. Elvisi Dusha opened
the scoring in quarter two with a big three
pointer to get the Raiders going, with Elliott
Sentance closing the score line to one point
with a deep shot of his own.
Bristol added their first points of the quarter
after four minutes without a score through Josh
Rogers, but without Okereafor in the game the
Raiders’ backcourt stepped up with Sentance
dropping two more important threes. Plymouth’s
run came to an end and the game shifted
back towards the Flyers as they picked up consecutive
stops. Copeland was fouled behind the
arc and scored two out of his three foul shots,
restoring the Flyers’ lead to one point going
into halftime at 32-31.
The second half was a different affair to the
first, with Bristol gritting their teeth in defence
as they began to shut Raiders out of the game.
The third quarter was scrappy by both outfits
with turnovers happening at each end of the
court. Neither team backed down defensively
as Prince Ibeh got the rejection on Delpeche,
then providing Ashley Hamilton with the assist
on an open shot from the corner.

Hamilton was able to tie the scores at 40
apiece with a ruthless baseline dunk, followed
by another open look from behind the arc, this
time scored by Denzel Ubiaro. The away side
regrouped after the play and looked to flex
their defensive muscle, forcing Raiders into
rushing the play and making erratic decisions
similarly to the first quarter.
Both sides found themselves in the bonus, as
the game got feisty. Neighbour received the
first unsportsmanlike foul of the game after
an altercation with Davis, and both teams
traded fouls throughout the quarter. Ibeh got
his second block of the game, this time denying
Copeland with the easy lay-up. Copeland
bounced back from this on the next Bristol
possession, with his tight handles drawing the
double team before laying off to Davis who hit
the three to put them up by five at the end of
the third.
Both teams continued to pile up the turnovers
in the fourth, as the defensive stops continued.
Ibeh sent back another huge block, but Raiders
failed to capitalise on their fast break chances.
The final period was typified by a Panos
Mayindombe circus shot, as he was forced
into a one-handed three point attempt on the
run which dropped, beating the shot clock as
his only points of the game. After this shot it
seemed as if the Flyers couldn’t miss.
Bristol continued to keep their foot on the
pedal, and the scoreline crept up for them.
Both sides got into foul trouble again, with
Sentance being fouled out after two
unsportsmanlike calls from intentionally
stopping the fast break and Thomas-Edwards
getting the same call giving him his fifth foul in
total. Raiders kept giving Flyers opportunities
at the charity stripe, and the game ended with
a 13-point margin in favour of the visitors.
While the result will be a tough one to take
for Raiders fans, they will take solace in the
fact that they only need one win from their
remaining cup matches to qualify for the
quarter finals. There is still much for coach
James to work on with his side’s offence which
proved wayward at times.
Whilst both sides proved effective at turning
the ball over and forcing mistakes, Raiders
were not able to turn their plays into points,
scoring only eight points off the turnover in
meagre comparison to Bristol’s 25.
Plymouth will hope to bounce back over the
weekend, as they face Surrey Scorchers in
consecutive days starting off at SSP on
Friday evening before returning to Pavilions
on Sunday.
BY JACK GUTHRIE
Okereafor was a menace once again, creating
opportunities for Copeland and Eric Lockett,
who combined for 41 points on the night. Lockett
had the highlight play of the game after
scoring an incredible lay-up, despite the tough
defence of Ubiaro, with a seemingly effortless
up and under finish at the rim.

FOXY
Hey Sports fans it’s the Fox that rocks here
once again…
I cannot wait to see you all for what I am
sure will be a party occasion.
The last 8 months have been a real rollercoaster
for us all. It has been boring being
asked to stay at home with little to do but
at least the boys are back on court and that
gives us something to really look forward
to and enjoy. We have played some great
basketball in the first few games with great
results. I am so pleased to see the Green
Machine back on the court.
We also have a book all about ME, if you
have not seen it yet make sure you check
it out. You will also be able to see my best
friend Red Dragon from Bahcesehir Koleji in
Istanbul. I was lucky enough to visit him and
his team in March just before the lockdown.
It was amazing and Red Dragons team are
really good too. I cannot wait for him to visit
the Raiderdome, I have told him all about it.
It is different having to watch OUR Raiders
on TV. I do miss being out there with the
boys and our wonderful cheerleaders
dancing and dunking but fear not, I am
sure we will be back at the Raiderdome
very soon.
Make sure you remain safe and keep washing
those hands.
This is the Fox signing off….

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED
WITH BASKETBALL?
I was always a basketball fan from a young
age, however I didn’t start playing until I
reached secondary school and stopped
playing football. I played for my secondary
school team, and began coaching whilst
studying my A Levels in sixth form. Eventually
I came to Plymouth Marjon University
and have been lucky enough to get the
opportunity to play for the student raiders
programme, whilst being offered the chance
to do community coaching and study my
sports coaching degree at the same time.
My sessions are for the U12 age group.
They aim to install solid, key fundamental
knowledge, work ethic, skills and techniques
VIEW FROM HOME
Hello again from all our homes and our 5th
BBL Cup game in 9 days. We started the
season late, it feels like it’s was a million
years since we last watched Raiders live in
the Pavilions and now we can’t get enough!
It’s great to have the ability to watch and
enjoy the action via YouTube but it’s
nowhere near as good as jumping around
like a loony at the Pavilions shouting
passionately. Those who have had the
pleasure/displeasure of sitting next to me
or near me will know this passion well!
Going back to Wednesday night and the
return game against Flyers. Okay it wasn’t
the result we would have been looking for
especially after the way we had won the
previous 2 games. Flyers came with a decent
game plan and tbf executed it well. They
played tough defence and our offence was
stifled by them.
What do we all hope from this final home
game against Scorchers in the group
stages? After Friday’s away trip to Guildford
where we hopefully got a good result,
we will see Deuce return to the Pavilions
after a successful period with us. A very
popular player with the fans and always
willing to chat with everyone. He will be one
to watch along with the likes of Tayo, Skyler
White and Lovell Cook (from his Flyers days).
With 2 good results from these 2 games will
leave Raiders in a strong position heading to
the final group game next weekend.
As always I will be fully behind the team
watching the action and wishing I was there!
DEVELOPMENT
As we are at the beginning of the season
what better time to provide an overview
of the teams currently in the Development
pathway, the leagues they play in and who
they are coached by.
Each team plays across the South West,
usually from September to April, and the
squads train once or twice a week. Matches
are played against ‘local’ opposition at the
weekends and teams travel as far as Cardiff
and Bristol with the odd trip to Gloucester
also thrown in for good measure!
This time we look at our youngest age
groups.
We start with the youngest squad, our
Under 12’s. Many of the squad will have
played locally within the YBL but this is their
first step to playing against teams from
outside the city. The emphasis at this age is
developing fundamental skills whilst having
fun and at the same time learning what’s
expected of a Junior Raider. Our youngest
age group are coached enthusiastically by
two of the club’s youngest coaches Ben Fox
ably assisted by Doug Llewellyn, who’s passion
and enthusiasm for learning is a great
example for the young players.
Our next age group is the Under 14’s, who
like the under 12’s play in the South West
Regional league. Selection for the training
squad at this age group is very competitive,
at this year’s try outs we had over 40 children
looking to secure a place in the fifteen-man
squad. Its fair to say the that coaches at
14’s are not the youngest in the club and are
headed up by Steve Spurrier and assisted
by Ameur Chelikha and Ben Anderson.
Training for Under 14’s steps up to twice
a week and coaches are looking to build
on those sound fundamental skills and
encourage and develop the Raiders style
of play. This means players are in the best
position and ready to play National League
at Under 16’s where the competition and
skill level starts to step up.
Next time we will look at our Under 16’s and
Under 18’s
Enjoy the game and stay safe!
